We are looking for active scholars and committed teachers at the Assistant, Associate, and Full Professor levels, who are engaged with one or more of the following fields:

Applications are welcomed from people working both in and out of the Anglophone world. Candidates should ideally be conversant with a broad sweep of literatures and theories. Classes to be offered include undergraduate gateway courses as well as upper-level and graduate seminars in individual areas of expertise. An active research profile in areas compatible with those listed above, as well as teaching experience pointing to a vibrant and dialogic classroom pedagogy will be welcome.

Belmont Abbey College (NC) - Assistant or Associate Professor - Medieval Literature - SKYPE INTERVIEW STAGE

Belmont Abbey College invites applications for an Assistant or Associate Professor of English with specialization in medieval literature and additional strengths in early modern literature.

An earned doctorate and demonstrated excellence in undergraduate teaching are required. Teaching in both the day and evening programs, with a 4/4 load, is required. Service to the department, College, and community; scholarly development; and contributing positively to the College's mission are expected. Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States.

The successful candidate will be a talented and dedicated academic deeply and enthusiastically committed to the Catholic mission of Belmont Abbey College. College of William and Mary (VA) - TT Asst. Professor - Old English / Early Medieval - ZOOM INTERVIEW STAGE

The Department of English at William & Mary invites applications for a tenure track position at the Assistant Professor level. We are interested in individuals with research and teaching interests in Old English and early medieval languages and literatures, with additional expertise in Old Norse, the history of the English language, and/or the Celtic literatures of the British Isles preferred. Teaching expectation is two courses per semester. The successful applicant will teach upper division courses, including an introductory Old English course, a Beowulf seminar, and a course on Celtic Narratives (in modern English translations). S/he will also teach lower-division courses, including a survey of British writers from the Middle Ages through Milton and the department’s new gateway course for English majors, Interpreting Literature. There will be opportunities to develop upper-level courses in the candidate’s specific area of expertise.

Required Qualifications: Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in English or a related field at the time appointment begins (August 10, 2019). At least two years of undergraduate teaching experience is preferred.

Columbia University (NY) - TT Asst. Professor - Medieval Literature - CAMPUS VISIT STAGE

The Department of English and Comparative Literature at Columbia University invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor in medieval literature. We are especially interested in candidates with demonstrated strengths in Early Middle English, romance, multilingualism in England, paleography, cultural contact beyond the British Isles, and medieval minority cultures. Beyond teaching in the field of specialization, the successful candidate also will teach two courses a year in Columbia's core curriculum, typically Literature Humanities. Humboldt Universität Berlin (DEU) - Junior Professorship (W1) in English Medieval Literature/Culture and Medievalism(s) - ADDITIONAL MATERIALS REQUESTED

The Department of English and American Studies in the Faculty of Language, Literature and Humanities at Humboldt Universität in Berlin, Germany, is advertising a Junior Professorship (W1), the German equivalent of an Assistant Professorship, in English Medieval Literature / Culture and Medieavelism(s).  Berlin is an "excellence hub" in Germany for investments in the humanities, and Humboldt is among the country's top universities.

The job advert is currently only posted in German on the Humboldt website, but Humboldt regularly employs international scholars, the department is accommodating of native English speakers, and the department assistants are all fluent in English and can answer questions from prospective applicants. Applications from academics outside Germany are explicitly welcome for this position. 

Applicants should demonstrate how their own work fits in with the ongoing research initiatives in the Department of English and American Studies. Applicants should be able to demonstrate facility in one additional, later literary epoch. Successful applicants will demonstrate teaching experience, experience in interdisciplinary collaboration, as well as the ability to attract third-party funding to research projects.

Indiana University (IN) - TT Asst. Professor - Early English Languages and Literatures (Old English / Germanic Philology) - CAMPUS VISIT STAGE

The Department of English at Indiana University invites applications for a Tenure-Track Assistant Professor position in Early English Languages and Literatures with specialization in Old English and expertise in Germanic philology beginning August 2019.

Secondary interests could include Celtic languages and literatures, early Middle English, fantasy literature, digital humanities, medievalisms, new media, material culture, and history of the book. Theoretical interests in gender, sexuality, disability studies, race, ecocriticism, or animal studies are also welcome.   • FYI, 2012 AAUP report: "At Northwestern State, programs were discontinued in such fields as economics, journalism, political science, sociology, German, chemistry, and physics, and the investigating committee identified sixteen tenured faculty appointments that were terminated in disregard of AAUP-supported standards. The investigation revealed that the NSU administration created a special appeals procedure for terminations that denied faculty members the right to a faculty hearing, terminated tenured positions before untenured ones, and did not attempt to find suitable alternative positions for those affected. Especially egregious was that some faculty were dismissed from tenured positions and then offered short-term contracts teaching many of the same courses at drastically reduced salaries. ... The AAUP report concludes that, lacking chief administrative officers who respect tenure and due process, academic freedom at both Southeastern and Northwestern is and “will in all likelihood remain insecure.” (link )

Saint Louis University-Madrid (SPAIN) - Full-Time Faculty Position in pre-1800 English Literature - ADDITIONAL MATERIALS REQUESTED

Saint Louis University, a Catholic, Jesuit institution dedicated to student learning, research, health care, and service, invites applications for a twelve-month full-time position in its Madrid Campus English Department (Spain). We seek candidates in pre-1800 English literature, especially those who demonstrate additional expertise in Transnational Studies, Mediterranean studies, or Creative Writing. The position, to begin September 1, 2019, is for 12 months, renewable and continuing by mutual agreement.

The teaching responsibility is 6 courses (18 credits) per year and includes all levels of literature and first-year writing. Candidates should have a strong commitment to undergraduate teaching, a productive research agenda, and willingness to engage in advising and service to develop our small, dynamic Department and Campus programs, including the B.A. in English.

Candidates must hold a Ph.D. in pre-1800 English literature by August 15, 2019, have published in the field of the position, and demonstrate teaching and research excellence. The Faculty of Languages and Cultures at the University of Iceland invites applications for a tenure-track position of Assistant Professor/Lecturer in in British Medieval and Renaissance Literature.

The successful applicant will contribute to historical and theoretical first, second and third year BA courses and MA seminars on Shakespeare, British Medieval and Renaissance Literature, and academic writing about literature. The Department of English of the University of Central Florida’s College of Arts and Humanities invites applications for a nine-month, tenure-earning position as Assistant Professor of Anglo-Saxon Literature and English Linguistics, anticipated to begin August 2019.

Duties: The position entails a 3/2 teaching load consisting of both online and face-to-face classes at the graduate and undergraduate levels, including courses in Anglo-Saxon literature, the History of the English Language, and Modern English Grammar. The successful candidate will be expected to maintain a productive research agenda and to participate in service activities to support the department, college, and university.

Minimum Qualifications: A Ph.D. in English or a relevant field from an accredited institution by time of appointment and successful teaching experience at the university level.

Preferences: Preference will be given to candidates with a strong record of publication and research and teaching interests in several of the following subdisciplines: grammar; Icelandic sagas, Norse mythology, and/or Celtic literatures; digital humanities; interdisciplinary methodologies; and online instruction. The ability to teach broad literature surveys, introduction to critical theory, and focused electives of the candidate’s design is also highly preferred.

University of Nottingham (UK) - Assistant Professor in Viking and Early Medieval English Studies (Fixed Term, 1 Year)

The School of English is seeking to appoint an Assistant Professor in Viking and Early Medieval English Studies (teaching focussed) to provide cover for a member of staff on Royal Society funded research leave.

The successful candidate will undertake teaching in the areas of Old Norse, Viking, and Early Medieval English studies and related topics in the School of English, and will contribute more widely to the School’s teaching activities. Candidates should have a PhD (or equivalent) in a relevant area of Old Norse/Old English language and literature, with expertise in the culture, history, and archaeology of the period.

A proven track record of teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels on live and distance programmes is essential, covering some (preferably more than one) of the following topics: language, literature, and culture of medieval Scandinavia; the history and archaeology of the Vikings in the British Isles; language, literature, and culture of the Anglo-Saxons; research methods in early medieval studies.
