Ashoka University (INDIA) - TT Position in Medieval Literature - MLA INTERVIEW STAGE

We are looking for a scholar and teacher of medieval literature. The successful candidate would ideally be comfortable with a broad sweep of global medieval literatures, in addition to focusing on one or more of the following areas: British medieval literature, Old English languages and literature, and medieval into early modern literatures. Interest and expertise in literary theory, and popular culture including film, would be a plus. Classes to be offered will include our gateway course on Early British Literature (from Beowulf to Paradise Lost), as well as more specialized classes according to the candidate's expertise. Candidates will need to have the Ph.D in hand by the time of joining Ashoka. Teaching experience pointing to a vibrant, dialogic, and fascinating classroom pedagogy would be welcome. Two Tenure-Track Assistant Professor Positions in English.

The Beloit College Department of English invites applicants for two tenure-track positions to begin August 2018:

Primary expertise in 20th- or 21st-century ethnic American Literature.

Primary expertise in medieval and/or early modern non-dramatic British Literature.

Desirable secondary areas for these positions are film studies or digital humanities, and both positions require strong background in and commitment to teach expository writing. Both hires would teach a 5 course load annually and contribute to all college programs, such as first-year seminars.

DUTIES OF THE POSITION: The successful candidate will teach coursework in Medieval and Renaissance literature at all levels, emphasizing Shakespeare. All faculty are expected to teach coursework in composition and general education. Other coursework taught as assigned. In addition to teaching, all faculty are expected to sustain a record of scholarly work, advise majors, assist the department with administrative and/or committee work, and assume campus-wide committee responsibilities. QUALIFICATIONS: Earned Ph.D. in English (or Literature) at the time of appointment is required. Florida State University (FL) - TT Asst. Professor - History of Text Technologies (incl. Medieval) - POSITION FILLED

Oxford University (UK), A Consolidated Library of Anglo-Saxon Poetry - Postdoctoral Research Assistant

Grade 7: £31,604 - £38,833 p.a.

Following the award of a European Research Council Advanced Grant to Professor Andy Orchard (‘A Consolidated Library of Anglo-Saxon Poetry’), the Faculty of English Language and Literature is seeking to appoint a Postdoctoral Research Assistant to work on the project. This post will be fixed-term until 31 August 2021, and it is anticipated that the appointee will start on 1 February 2018 or as soon as possible thereafter. The postholder will be based in the Gibson Building, Radcliffe Observatory Quarter, Oxford OX2 6GG.

The project involves the creation of an interactive online edition of the 60,000 or so lines of verse, roughly half in Old English and half in Latin, that comprise the entire combined corpus of Anglo-Saxon poetry. This will be marked up through TEI P5 XML to facilitate the identification of idiosyncratic features of sound, metre, spellings, diction, syntax, formulas, themes, and genres across the corpus. The project will produce a linked series of conferences, workshops, and print publications, including monographs, conference-proceedings, and a themed issue of an academic journal. CLASP will use the full panoply of digital resources, including sound- and image-files where relevant, to make the oldest surviving poetry from Anglo-Saxon England available to a modern audience for unprecedented kinds of exploration, comprehensive analysis, and interrogation. Further details of the project are included at Appendix 1 of the Further Particulars.

The researcher, with training in Old English, will have primary responsibility for the Old English elements of the project. Throughout the project, the RA will be expected to present their research at several conferences a year, to produce articles, and to co-edit conference proceedings and other publications. They will also help to organise the seminars, workshops, and conferences, and will co-edit the conference proceedings and special journal issue.

Applicants should possess a PhD in Anglo-Saxon Literary and Linguistic Studies or a related field (the PhD must have been awarded by the time the individual takes up the post); experience of work with Anglo-Saxon texts and manuscripts, including accuracy in transcription and translation; high proficiency in Old English, especially with regard to language and metre (some acquaintance with Latin is also required); the ability to work flexibly, and in a team; a willingness to participate in the overall running of the project and public engagement activities; a high level of communication skills, including the ability to address a range of audiences; a high level of organisational skills and an ability to meet deadlines; excellent computer skills; and the capability to work independently, and across disciplinary boundaries.

The Rossell Hope Robbins Library at the University of Rochester is pleased to invite applications for the Helen Ann Robbins Fellowship in Medieval Studies. The fellowship was endowed by Helen Ann Mins and Rossell Hope Robbins to provide a period of research at the Rossell Hope Robbins Library for a woman completing a dissertation project in medieval studies. It is open to qualified applicants in all fields of medieval studies. Past fellows have worked on medieval clothing, Jews in medieval England, the Arthurian legend, courtesy books and manners, female advice figures, manuscript unity, and translation and textual transmission.

The recipient must be in residence in Rochester and making use of the Robbins Library for the academic year (up to twelve months). She must provide for her own living and travel expenses from the award, and provide her own health care. She is expected to engage in the academic life of the University. Towards the end of her residency, she will be invited to give a lecture based on her research.

The ability of the Robbins Library to support research in the area of the dissertation will be a factor in choosing the recipient of the fellowship. The Robbins Library has outstanding holdings in medieval English and French literature - including but not limited to Chaucer, the Middle English lyric, and medieval romance - and has considerable holdings in manuscript studies and medieval history and culture, particularly British. We support a number of important scholarly projects: the TEAMS Middle English Texts Series (General Editor, Russell Peck); the Chaucer Bibliographies (General Editor, Thomas Hahn); and The Camelot Project (General Editors, Alan Lupack and Barbara Tepa Lupack).

The Centre for Medieval Literature (CML) at the University of Southern Denmark (SDU, Odense) and the University of York invites applications for a total of three postdoctoral positions. The position available at the University of Southern Denmark (Department of History) is a 3-year post with a start date of September 1, 2018.

The CML’s research is interdisciplinary and multilingual, combining literary study with history, history of art, history of science, and other disciplines. We cover a broad range of topics addressing texts within and, especially, beyond the established medieval literary canons. The CML works to establish theoretical models for the study of medieval literature in a European scale. Our research is organised in three main research strands: Imperial Languages, Canon and Library, and Transformations and Translocations.

Successful candidates will be committed to 1) high quality research 2) collaboration which unites scholarship across disciplines and languages, 3) creating a shared research environment across both universities, and 4) situating their research within a wider European framework. In addition to describing your research topic and how it will fit into one or more of the three research strands of the CML, your proposal should include a statement about your potential contributions to the teamwork that is an important aspect of the CML. In the case of otherwise equally-ranked candidates, research in the area of Slavonic literature will be preferred for one of the three positions.

In addition to conducting their own research, the successful candidates will be expected to contribute to the lively and collaborative research environment of the CML. Such contributions may include: writing blog posts for the website; participating in and organizing reading groups; running workshops and/or conferences, which in addition to a specific focus should have a broad appeal relevant to other Centre members; attending events organized by other Centre members, including those that are not directly tied to the candidates’ own research area; and attending CML-wide events such as annual gatherings bringing together members from both SDU and York. In order to facilitate this, the successful candidates are expected to be based primarily at their home institution (whether SDU or York) during the CML autumn (mid-September – mid-December), winter (February – March), and spring (April – June) terms. Dumbarton Oaks Medieval Library (DC) - Managing Editor - POSITION FILLED

The Dumbarton Oaks Medieval Library (DOML), published by Harvard University Press, launched in 2010 with the mission to offer major literary texts of medieval and Byzantine culture in literature, history, philosophy, and other realms of learning. The series has three aims: to make texts readily accessible in both content and price to a broad readership of English speakers, while also meeting the standards of experts; to equip non-specialist readers with the basic information needed to understand and appreciate the text; and to keep volumes in print for a long time. Each volume is bilingual, presenting a source text with an English translation on the facing page. General readers, undergraduate and graduate students, and professional scholars from within and without medieval and Byzantine studies are the target audience. DOML began with a focus on three languages: Byzantine Greek, Medieval Latin, and Old English. The series now numbers 49 volumes, and is poised to incorporate additional vernacular languages with a new subseries, Medieval Iberia.

Working closely with the General Editor and the Subseries Editors, and with Harvard University Press, the Managing Editor will manage all aspects of the editorial and production process: create policies and style guides for the series, issue contracts, assign and oversee translations, set and enforce timelines, prepare the annual budget, organize annual board meetings, and plan outreach for the series, including through presentations and attendance at scholarly conferences. The Managing Editor will also train and supervise Harvard graduate students and undergraduate summer interns.

Required Qualifications

Advanced degree in Medieval Studies, Byzantine Studies, Classics, or related field.

Advanced language skills in Latin or Greek are required.

Familiarity with Dropbox, Asana, Word, and Excel is required.

Candidates must have strong computer and editorial skills, together with a background in any area of the humanities with a particular specialty in Medieval Studies. Strict attention to detail, and excellent communication skills, are particularly important.
