NOTES:

  • This is a Medievalist position.
  • 9/18 From an e-mail from a member of the department (forwarded to me as grad faculty at another university): "Our English department is searching for two positions: one in the long 18th century and one in medieval literature.  Both jobs are posted now and any job candidate will find the description for the long 18th century position perfectly clear  But the medieval position is oddly described.  If you read the job description, it sounds like we’re looking for a generalist, who might just have a sub-specialty in medieval literature.  But in reality that is not so.  The job is really for a medievalist.  We are searching for someone who specializes in medieval literature, and who can also teach courses in History of the English Language (this course is for our MAT students), medieval literature, ancient literature, and courses in his/her area that might also cross-list with our Women’s and Gender Studies program. In short, we are trying to get the word out to graduate programs that seem likely to send applicants our way.  We don’t want potential applicants to be put off by the ad, and we want to assure them that we seek a medievalist."
  • 9/14: Does anyone have a link to the ad on the HR site? I could not find it when I searched.
  • Position still not posted at Ithaca HR site as of 9/15, but job now posted in MLA JIL. The Interfolio link with the MLA ad suggests position will be open for applications on Sept. 19.
  • 9/18: I emailed Dr. Breen to ask about the link, and he says it should be up tomorrow or Wednesday, but the original materials requested will just be CV and cover letter, as well as the three letters of rec.
  • 2/28/18: received email saying another candidate had accepted the position.

  • I believe one has to be a Canadian citizen or residing in Canada currently to apply for this position. French is also a must.
  • the posting isn't totally clear on how much facility with French is required. Is oral fluency a must?
  • [not fluency, but working knowledge for administration level tasks should be held; but this is Kingston, so English, in an English Dept., so I imagine not a priority, though being fluent would obviously help]
  • Any news? (12/8)
  • Since this is a government job, it will probably be a little while before we hear anything. I have a friend in the Canadian Navy and she said to just be patient because government hires tend to move slowly (12/9)

Good afternoon,
Thank you so much for applying for our position in Medieval British Literature. We received a large number of applications, and while it's wonderful to see such strength and dynamism in the field, it made selecting our shortlist very difficult indeed. On this occasion, we weren't able to take your application further, but your scholarship and your commitment to Medieval Studies is hugely appreciated. On behalf of the search committee, I'd like to thank you for your interest, and wish you every success in the future.

  • Is anybody else having trouble with the link on the UCLA recruitment page? I can't find the link to actually get into the application forms.
  • -- I am having the same problem. It seems like the position isn't actually open for applications yet. I emailed the tech support for their HR site, so maybe that will fix things [10/5]. Update: you can now access the application.
  • I am confused as to why the application is requiring me to upload letters of recommendation in addition to requiring contact information for references.  When my recommenders submit their letters, will the document requirement be fulfilled, or is there some other way I'm supposed to be handling this?
  • Oct 30: The answer is no, the "letters of recommendation" document requirement was not automatically fulfilled when I received my last reference just now. Surely a criteria error; I've filed a query with support.
  • I emailed for the same question and was told the recommendors should follow the "link," of which there is none.
  • Nice. If I don't hear back, I'll just assume they want a document listing my referees' contact information. At least uploading any PDF document will clear the application for submission. Update: they've now responded, saying that they've marked my file as complete. Still registers as incomplete from my end though. [posted 10/30]

University of Southern Denmark and University of York (UK) - Centre for Medieval Literature - Three Postdoctoral Positions[]

The Centre for Medieval Literature (CML) at the University of Southern Denmark (SDU, Odense) and the University of York invites applications for a total of three postdoctoral positions. (It is possible to apply to both universities with the same research plan, but you must make separate applications following the procedures of each institution.)

The position available at the University of Southern Denmark (Department of History) is a 3-year post with a start date of September 1, 2018.

The two positions available at the University of York (Department of English and Related Literature) are 2 year, 11-month posts with a start date of September 1, 2018. Applications to York need to be made through the University of York system and will be advertised in due course.

The CML’s research is interdisciplinary and multilingual, combining literary study with history, history of art, history of science, and other disciplines. We cover a broad range of topics addressing texts within and, especially, beyond the established medieval literary canons. The CML works to establish theoretical models for the study of medieval literature in a European scale. Our research is organised in three main research strands: Imperial Languages, Canon and Library, and Transformations and Translocations.

Successful candidates will be committed to 1) high quality research 2) collaboration which unites scholarship across disciplines and languages, 3) creating a shared research environment across both universities, and 4) situating their research within a wider European framework. In addition to describing your research topic and how it will fit into one or more of the three research strands of the CML, your proposal should include a statement about your potential contributions to the teamwork that is an important aspect of the CML. In the case of otherwise equally-ranked candidates, research in the area of Slavonic literature will be preferred for one of the three positions.

In addition to conducting their own research, the successful candidates will be expected to contribute to the lively and collaborative research environment of the CML. Such contributions may include: writing blog posts for the website; participating in and organizing reading groups; running workshops and/or conferences, which in addition to a specific focus should have a broad appeal relevant to other Centre members; attending events organized by other Centre members, including those that are not directly tied to the candidates’ own research area; and attending CML-wide events such as annual gatherings bringing together members from both SDU and York. In order to facilitate this, the successful candidates are expected to be based primarily at their home institution (whether SDU or York) during the CML autumn (mid-September – mid-December), winter (February – March), and spring (April – June) terms. Each postdoc based at York will also be expected to spend some time at SDU, and vice versa.

Application, salary and conditions of employment etc. Employment as Postdoc is temporary (max. 4 years). Employment stops automatically by the end of the period.

To qualify for the position you must have completed a PhD-degree by the application deadline. The job description will be mainly research, additionally there will be teaching to a certain extent and other tasks to a limited extent.

The university will determine the distribution between the various tasks. The extent of the tasks can vary over time.

An upgrade of pedagogical qualifications is not part of the position. Thus employment as Postdoc cannot stand alone as a qualification for later employment as associate professor/senior researcher. Applications will be assessed by an expert committee. Applicants will be informed of their assessment by the Faculty.

As part of the overall assessment of the applicant’s qualifications, an interview may be applied. For this post the shortlisted candidares will be invited to an interview in Paris on June 7.

Appointment to this position may also include teaching obligations in regard to related degree programmes.

The successful applicant will be employed in accordance with the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and AC (the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations), Cirkulære om overenskomst for Akademikere i staten 2015

Applications should be sent electronically via the link “apply online”. Please note that we only accept files in pdf-format no more than 10 MB per file. We do not accept zip-files, jpg or other image files.

All pdf-files must be unlocked and allow binding and may not be password protected. In case you have more than one file per field you need to combine the pdf-files into a single file, as each field handles only one file.

The Faculty expects applicants to read the information “How to apply” before applying. Application and all appendices must be in English.

Material in any language of publication relevant for the field will be assessed. Please always include a copy of original diploma/certificates.

An application must include: Application (cover letter including a research proposal, in all max 5 pages); Curriculum Vitae; Certificates/Diplomas; Information on previous teaching experience, please attach as Teaching portfolio; List of publications indicating the publications attached; Up to 3 of the most relevant publications. Please attach one pdf-file for each publication. For any publication with a co-author, a co-author statement must be submitted as part of the pdf-file.

We recommend that as an international applicant you take the time to visit Working in Denmark where you will find information and facts about moving to, working and living in Denmark, as well as the International Staff Office at SDU.

The University wishes our staff to reflect the diversity of society and thus welcomes applications from all qualified candidates regardless of personal background.

Other Full-Time Medievalist Positions[]

Dumbarton Oaks Medieval Library (DC) - Managing Editor - POSITION FILLED[]

The Dumbarton Oaks Medieval Library (DOML), published by Harvard University Press, launched in 2010 with the mission to offer major literary texts of medieval and Byzantine culture in literature, history, philosophy, and other realms of learning. The series has three aims: to make texts readily accessible in both content and price to a broad readership of English speakers, while also meeting the standards of experts; to equip non-specialist readers with the basic information needed to understand and appreciate the text; and to keep volumes in print for a long time. Each volume is bilingual, presenting a source text with an English translation on the facing page. General readers, undergraduate and graduate students, and professional scholars from within and without medieval and Byzantine studies are the target audience. DOML began with a focus on three languages: Byzantine Greek, Medieval Latin, and Old English. The series now numbers 49 volumes, and is poised to incorporate additional vernacular languages with a new subseries, Medieval Iberia.

Working closely with the General Editor and the Subseries Editors, and with Harvard University Press, the Managing Editor will manage all aspects of the editorial and production process: create policies and style guides for the series, issue contracts, assign and oversee translations, set and enforce timelines, prepare the annual budget, organize annual board meetings, and plan outreach for the series, including through presentations and attendance at scholarly conferences. The Managing Editor will also train and supervise Harvard graduate students and undergraduate summer interns.

Required Qualifications

Advanced degree in Medieval Studies, Byzantine Studies, Classics, or related field.
Advanced language skills in Latin or Greek are required.
Familiarity with Dropbox, Asana, Word, and Excel is required.
Candidates must have strong computer and editorial skills, together with a background in any area of the humanities with a particular specialty in Medieval Studies. Strict attention to detail, and excellent communication skills, are particularly important.
