Birmingham-Southern College (AL) - TT Asst. Professor - Medieval Literature - SKYPE INTERVIEW STAGE

Birmingham-Southern College invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position in medieval literature and culture (or medievalism) at the rank of Assistant Professor in the Department of English. The position will begin August 2017.

BSC is committed to finding a teacher/scholar who, while proficient in Middle English literature, including Chaucer, will bring a new and diverse perspective to medieval studies. A successful candidate might contribute to the College in a number of ways: engaging students in medievalisms from the twelfth to the twenty-first century; developing courses on the Middle Eastern influences on medieval European culture; and/or participating in new programs such as Creative and Applied Computing, whether through digital scholarship, gaming, or technology-based pedagogies. Additionally, a successful candidate would be able to create upper-level courses that emphasize the development of literary traditions over time.

Commitment to undergraduate teaching and research in the liberal arts tradition is essential. Teaching load is 3-1-3, including a non-traditional January term project of the professor’s own creation. Ph.D. in Literature with a specialization in medieval studies is required. Eligible candidates must have received their Ph.D. by time of employment.

BSC is located just minutes from downtown Birmingham, the largest city in Alabama and a leading hub for banking and medical research in the Southeast. There are six institutions of higher education within a short commute. The community sponsors a symphony, ballet, opera, and several museums as well as annual art, music, and film festivals. There are numerous opportunities for outdoor activities within the city limits, and Birmingham is also within an easy day’s drive of the Blue Ridge Mountains, the Great Smoky Mountains, and the Gulf of Mexico.

The Pforzheimer Curator also provides curatorial support for other early book and manuscript holdings, including the Wrenn library, the Recusant collection, the Uzielli Aldine Press collection, and incunabula.

The Pforzheimer Curator will participate in a variety of interpretive activities (writing, exhibitions, lectures, and talks) that promote the teaching and research use of the Center’s early book and manuscript holdings and promote the greater understanding and appreciation of these collections. He or she will provide specialized reference support for researchers working with the Center’s early book and manuscript holdings and will contribute to the annual review of research fellowship applications. The Pforzheimer Curator will select books and manuscripts for the Pforzheimer Library, keeping in mind existing strengths, trends in scholarship, and classroom needs. He or she will work with Preservation & Conservation staff to establish treatment priorities and with Description & Access staff and Digital Collections staff to promote enhanced access to the collection by consulting on cataloging and access initiatives. The curator will contribute to the broader institutional mission and work of the Ransom Center by participating in regular meetings with the Center’s curatorial group, serving on Ransom Center committees, and collaborating with colleagues across the Center. He or she will represent the Ransom Center within professional and scholarly communities related to early book and manuscript culture and serve as a liaison with relevant faculty at The University of Texas at Austin.

The Koller-Collins Center for English Studies began as the English Department's "core collection" for the graduate students' study of literature. University of Virginia (VA) - Third Century Postdoctoral Fellowship in Medieval Literature

The Department of English at the University of Virginia invites applicants for a one-year Third Century Postdoctoral Fellowship in Medieval Literature. This position is a one-year appointment; however, the appointment may be renewed for one additional year, contingent upon available funding and satisfactory performance. The anticipated appointment start date is July 25, 2017.

In addition to pursuing a vibrant research agenda, the Fellow will contribute to our mission to strengthen the humanities by teaching one course per semester and by participating in the intellectual life of the department.

Candidates must have received their Ph.D. no earlier than July 1, 2014 and must have degree in hand by July 1, 2017.
