NOTES:

  • This position was also advertised last year; see Medieval 2015
  • This appears to be an OE position being advertised misleadingly broadly. Talk up your OE folks! Everything's coming up Anglo-Saxon!
  • What makes you say that, Allen Frantzen's presence in the department? If they had wanted an OE person only, presumably they would have advertised for such. I mention this just in case someone would read the previous comment and not apply. Not to rain on the OE parade (I do OE myself), but many departments are choosing not to constrain searches to OE even when replacing Anglo-Saxonists.
  • because I know in part how the failed search went down, that's why. Now, obviously there's no reason ME folks can't apply too. I was just encouraging OE applicants because the ad itself does not, but based on last year's search, that is in fact what they're looking for. We've got a great wiki, let's play nice and professional, eh? Some of us are genuinely trying to help.
  • OK. Not sure what was not nice or not professional about my reply. It's great that Loyola may in fact prefer to hire an OE person. My comment was just meant to offer my opinion that there is probably nothing "misleading" about the ad as written, at least no more than any job ad. As an aside, I'm fairly sure no OE person ever saw an ad for general medieval and thought, 'Not targeted to an OE person; I won't apply.'
  • Thanks to the commentator who alluded to the "failed search." Can you say more, please?
  • I'm trying to be both politic and anonymous. I know for a fact that last year they ran the same ad, and obviously did not close the search. I know for a fact that they very much wanted OE last year. It's not impossible that they have changed their minds about that, but based on last year I continue to strongly urge OE candidates to apply. I'm sorry if I've annoyed people, I just thought I could help candidates apply more successfully by sharing what I know. I'm happy for my comments to be deleted if they are inappropriate.
  • Thanks very much!
  • They hired someone who works in Middle English after all.
    • Exactly. Job ads mean what they say, except when they don't, but anyone who's been faculty knows that departments don't even always agree about what they 'secretly' want.

  • Can we agree that this add is absurd?
  • It doesn't strike me as absurd. Is it the specificity of the service course subspeciality that bothers you? If the position appeals to you, just make your best case for filling that role and understand that the department expects something more than upper-level medieval courses and Brit lit surveys from this hire.
