NOTES:

  • Search Committee Chair, here. Obviously, the timing of this search is a bit strange: not many schools run TT searches that begin in late April. But, we had one of our Brit Lit profs announce her departure recently, so we have begun this search ASAP (as soon as we got through the various steps to receive official approval for the search). You will notice the ad says "review of applications will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled." I never quite knew what this sort of language meant when I was on the job market, but in this case we plan to move as quickly as possible with the search. We understand many of you are nearing the end of your semester--a particularly busy time for us all--but please do try to submit application materials as promptly as is feasible (the search will be using Interfolio's ByCommittee system, so you will need to wait for the JIL ad to appear, then apply through the Interfolio link). For our part, we will attempt to keep you updated on the search's progress via this space (I will post updates on the British Open 2014 page). Though it can be difficult to predict a search timeline, we hope to conduct Skype interviews during May, with campus interviews to follow. If you have any questions, feel free to post them here or to email me at dcolson@emporia.edu.

NOTES AND QUERIES:

  • You must fill out their Equal Opportunity questionaire for your application to be considered!
  • NB: Additional materials requested include a sample writing, a dossier of letters, and a teaching statement.
  • Feeling a bit out of the loop- in submitting these materials "on Interfolio" they mean "via Interfolio, by email to the address below" correct? Instead, if there is an Intefolio link or button -on- Interfolio, could someone tell me where to look for it (since I don't seem to be able to find it on my own)? Apologies again, and thanks.
  • To answer the question above, I believe you log on to Interfolio and click on "New Destination."  Type in the university name and then you will be able to submit your documents to the university.  It gives you a destination email address and name to send it to, so send it to the name and address given to you at the bottom of your email request for further materials.  I received the request for further materials too, and that's the method in which I have sent in my additional materials.  You'll receive an acknowledgement from Interfolio once the materials are sent to the appropriate person. Hope that helps!
  • Thanks! That's what I had begun to do, and then I reread the email and second-guessed myself- classic! Thanks for the confirmation.
  • ^You're very welcome. Good luck!!
  • That's what I did as well. What utterly confuses me, however, is that Interfolio offers to send these materials either free or for $6. Without any apparent difference between the options. Your choice, so to speak.
  • Did anyone receive confirmation for additional materials sent through Interfolio? Just curious. I received confirmation from Interfolio that the materials were sent, but hadn't received any confirmation from the search chair about his receiving them. Wasn't sure if I should follow up.
  • ^ I received the same response as you.  I wasn't expecting any other confirmation from the Chair.  I figured that with the amount of materials that the hiring committee had to go through, candidates probably wouldn't hear anything else until the next stage.  Don't let that put you off from following up if it will put your mind at ease though.
  • Great. Thanks for your response!

NOTES AND QUERIES:

Wondering if this is an internal hire. There is a "lecturer" listed in late medieval on their faculty page expecting her PhD in spring 2014.

  • I don't know anything specific about this situation, but don't assume that the presence of an inside candidate ruins anyone else's chances. It can be very difficult to win a job as the inside candidate (although, of course, it can also be an advantage). Even if a search starts out as a total sham (and my impression is that this is rare), the committee can't help but compare their inside candidate to the best applicants.

NOTES AND QUERIES:

  • Has anyone who interviewed at MLA heard from the Search Committee?
  • Nope. They said that those not invited for campus visits wouldn't hear anything until the very end, though, so I'm assuming I wasn't short listed.
  • No, but at MLA they told me that they'd be contacting people about campus visits by the first week in Feb at the latest, so I'm trying not to worry yet.
  • Rejections email said they had "selected another candidate," so I guess that means the person accepted their offer?

NOTES:

Has anyone asked what they mean by "dossier"? My first thought would be recommendations, but I can't send my recommendations and a SSSE in the same package, since the recommendations are confidential and have to be sent through Interfolio.

An answer, sorta: "Dossier" probably means a dossier of your referees letters. That is what I sent. You can always offer more info in the closing statement of your letter. Since the ad requested a self-addressed envelope, I mailed it out. The search was on the last year's wiki for more info. --> Medieval 2013

Update: I sent recommendation letters as my "dossier," and I received an email telling me to send my "teaching materials/dossier." I'm guessing that's what they wanted in the first place, but I suppose there is also a chance that it was a request for more materials. Anyone else have input on this?

  • I got a similar message/request for my teaching dossier. I figured it was boilerplate for all applicants, but the Renaissance 2014 page says people have received rejections, so maybe it is a good sign?
