NOTES:

A campus interview, really? I literally just had a telephone interview and was told they are still at the stage. Super weird.

That is odd. Given that they only gave everyone a week to get all of those materials to them, I suspected from the beginning that there was an internal candidate that they had already planned on hiring.

I'm not an internal candidate, but I am from the state. I don't know if that had something to do with the early campus interview or not. The search chair said they were pressed for time.

Pretty typical for Canadian schools to skip conference interview and go straight short-list.

Five candidates interviewed on campus. Last interview 25 Jan.

Found out that three internal (working there now) or otherwise favored (i.e. recently worked there and remain well-connected) candidates were interviewed. Wonder when offer was made. <-- May I ask how you found out this information? (From a graduate student who knows the department well. Not sure if it's even relevant information! Feel free to delete if not suitable for the wiki.)

--- I am curious to know on what basis the commenter makes the assertion that these candidates are "favored." Just because you're an internal candidate does not mean that you will walk into a job. I think the information is certainly "relevant," though. It is useful to see who actually makes it to the final selection stage.

11/25/11: I'm assuming that "MLA 2012 in Boston" is probably in error, yes?

Yes. And I think you will find that that isn't the only error they will make. Should you get an interview, ask them what their retention rate is for junior faculty (it isn't good), and then ask about the leadership style of the department chair.

12/15: Has anyone heard from these folks? Are they still planning on interviewing at MLA?

12/18: Not a word. I looked on their faculty page, and there are FOUR visiting people. Is this a real search?

12/21: Still nothing?

1/11: Anyone know anything about the status of this search? Has it been cancelled?

1/11: Apart from a letter acknowledging receipt of my materials, I have not heard anything from these folks.

1/13: Is there any way to find out if they interviewed anyone other than their 4 "visiting" people?

  • 2/2 I can confirm that they interviewed by Skype at least one applicant who was not one of their visiting faculty.

Better read the school's mission statement; here's some information of potential relevance to applicants: http://www.insidehighered.com/news/2011/09/08/english_professor_at_erskine_known_for_defending_science_is_fired --

29/10/2011: Adding to this, since I was doing a bit of pre-covering letter research, there's some important things to note from the mission statement and the employee handbook (http://www.erskine.edu/faculty-staff/Handbook-8-5-2011.pdf).

From the former:

The mission of Erskine College is to equip students to flourish by providing an excellent liberal arts education in a Christ-centered environment where learning and biblical truth are integrated to develop the whole person. Therefore, Erskine seeks candidates for faculty positions who are professing Christians and who are committed to excellence in teaching and service.

And the latter, just in case that seems vague:

Faculty Employment
Erskine employs as new faculty members only Christians who have consented in writing to the Philosophy of Christian Higher Education statement, including its definition of an evangelical Christian, and the appropriate College or Seminary Mission Statement. Implementation of this policy shall be the responsibility of the President.

NOTES:

Does anyone know anymore details about this position? I'm curious if this is the same position as last year or if it is for another branch of the program and maybe if who are they looking for differs by much?

A: It looks like last year's position was filled. So this is a new or extra line? This ad is very specific about desire for fourteenth century expertise (as opposed to last year's more open-ended ad). Also, this position seems to be for a different campus.

A: This is indeed a new and different position. Fordham has (for the purposes of this position) two campuses: The historical one in Rose Hill (the Bronx), where the Center for Medieval Studies is located, and the Lincoln Center campus, which will be the home base for the position which is advertised. But these campuses both belong to the same administrative unit (ONE English department, two locations, with a shuttle service between the two) and are closely interconnected.

Rejection letter received 2/21 says they "eventually settled on another candidate"

Letter received 2/28 also mentions 93 applicants, if anyone is curious.

  • Anyone? Anyone?
  • Haven't heard a thing from them, not even an acknowledgment of my application. Hopefully soon...
  • Dec. 20: Anyone? Anything? Getting close to MLA ...
  • Dec. 21: Haven't heard anything either way yet...also didn't get acknowledgement, though their online system indicates I applied.
  • Dec. 22: You're not alone in limbo land - I also haven't heard anything either way. One wonders...
  • Dec. 23: Ugh, seriously. If you can schedule one interview and send a few email rejections, SC, can't you take care of the rest of us?!
  • Dec. 26: I emailed the chair asking what was up: if you haven't heard either way, it means they didn't want to MLA interview you, but on the off chance they want to go beyond their MLA list, they want to leave the door open. Yippee.
  • Dec. 26: Thanks for that! Now I feel like I can send off a (rather important) CV update without seeming like a total idiot. Unless, of course, I'm rejected and just forgotten about...
  • Good info, and thanks to the person who emailed the chair. I'm one of the limbos, which I guess isn't a total defeat!
  • Mar. 9: One of the holdovers, just got a rejection today. Search is apparently complete now, according to the e-mail rejection.
