University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill - 1-year Sociocultural Medical Anthropology Instructor Position, 2014-2015 (Review begins June 1)[edit | edit source]
The Department of Anthropology at UNC-Chapel Hill is seeking to hire a 1-year replacement Instructor in cultural medical anthropology. We seek a dynamic teacher whose research focuses on anthropological analyses of biomedicine, including topics such as: new biomedical technologies and ontologies of the body; disability and care-giving; infectious disease in political-economic and cultural contexts; epidemics and the politics of biosecurity; medical research and clinical trials; transplant; end-of-life care; and drug use/rehabilitation technologies. Scholars working on questions related to the intersections of biomedicines and other medical systems, including epistemologies of medical pluralism, the politics of bio-prospecting, and the circulation of pharmaceuticals, are also of interest. Likely courses for the fall semester include: 1)Body and Subject, an upper level course examining the body and embodiment in anthropological perspective; and 2)Living Medicine, an introductory-level course examining the various dimensions of biomedicine as work, knowledge, industry, and identity. Likely courses for the spring semester include 1)Medicine and Anthropology, an upper level undergraduate course examining anthropology’s approach to the study of biomedicine; and 2)Anthropological Approaches to Disability, an upper level undergraduate course examining anthropology’s approach to the cultural analysis of disability, or alternatively, a course agreed upon in discussion with the department. Consideration will be given to a candidate’s proposal to teach a course on their own research interests, provided the course fits department needs.
We are also looking for a colleague who will be actively engaged in our Moral Economies of Medicine Working Group.

The Sophie Davis School of Biomedical Education invites applicants for a lecturer position in the Department of Medical Education. The successful candidate will be expected to teach Humanities in Medicine and specialized topics courses. The successful candidate will also be expected to eventually take on administrative and advising responsibilities.
Bachelors degree required. Masters degree in Narrative Medicine and at least two years of experience in teaching on the college level preferred. Experience working with diverse groups/students. Evidence of a commitment to and achievement of dynamic and effective teaching and program coordination. Expertise in the areas of computer-assisted instruction and instructional technology (e.g. Blackboard) is a plus.
Salary commensurate with experience, up to a maximum of $74,907.

- The Barrett Honors College of Arizona State University is expanding its faculty and invites applications for a position in the core Honors faculty. The faculty members of Barrett are non-tenure track Lecturers, Senior Lecturers, and Principal Lecturers; most are on three-year renewable and rolling appointments. The main teaching responsibility rests on a two-semester interdisciplinary seminar course, The Human Event, in which students examine important ideas from earliest writings to the present. Special attention is given to critical thinking and argumentative writing skills. In addition, faculty members teach upper-division seminars, and mentor honors students throughout their four years in independent studies, individual conferences, theses, and other forms of scholarly achievement.
- Barrett attracts many of the top students in the country and provides them with an enriched academic experience that challenges them and enables them to become better citizens. The typical Barrett freshman is in the top five percent of his or her high school class, has SAT scores of 1320 or above, and has a high school grade-point average of 3.81.
- We seek to fill a full-time, multi-year faculty position whose primary responsibility will be to teach the first-year Human Event seminar. Successful applicants will demonstrate experience in and openness to teaching primary sources through multiple theoretical/disciplinary/methodological approaches, across different cultures and historical eras. The position begins August 2014; the nine-month salary will be based on education and experience.
- Qualifications: A PhD in any field of the humanities, natural or social sciences that complements the academic focus of the existing faculty members. Candidates whose work integrates views from multiple areas of the natural sciences, the social sciences, and/or the humanities are encouraged to apply. Experience in teaching argumentative writing skills is required, and experience leading seminar-based discussions is highly desired.

Hiram College invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track faculty position in the department of Biomedical Humanities to begin in the Fall of 2014. Hiram’s Biomedical Humanities major is an interdisciplinary pre-health professions major and is tied closely to Hiram’s Center for Literature and Medicine. This Center and its innovative programming and medical humanities curriculum are supported by an NEH endowment.
The successful candidate will teach interdisciplinary undergraduate courses in medical humanities, emphasizing the use of literature or arts to examine topics such as bioethics, representations of illness, death and dying, and health care disparities. Of particular interest are candidates who are skilled in teaching the close reading of texts, narratology, and narrative medicine approaches. Prior experience with distance learning or other online educational initiatives is also desirable. Candidates must have a PhD in literature or another humanities or arts field, with experience in health care and bioethics.
This position carries with it the opportunity to develop unique medical humanities courses in line with the candidate’s interests, as well as opportunities within the Center for Literature and Medicine, including planning its annual programming and its distinctive summer seminars for health care professionals, bioethicists, medical humanities scholars, and students. Opportunities also exist to teach within our Graduate Interdisciplinary Studies program and a new Master’s degree program in Medical Ethics and Humanities being launched in collaboration with NEOMED, Kent State University, the University of Akron, Summa Health Systems and the Cleveland Clinic.
