The Department of Anthropology at Barnard College announces a search for a tenure track assistant professor with a focus on language, culture, or semiotics. We seek a scholar whose expertise complements that of the current faculty. We especially encourage applications from women, people of color, persons with disabilities, LGBT people, people from diverse economic backgrounds, and individuals from other underrepresented groups. Barnard College is a private women's liberal arts college that was founded in 1889. For many years it was considered the women's college at Columbia University. Today, each academic discipline has developed its own relationship between the Barnard and Columbia departments. The Department of Anthropology is a joint department, meaning that the faculty from Barnard and Columbia comprise a single faculty who work together training undergraduate and graduate students, hiring and mentoring new faculty, organizing seminars and events, and on other scholarly endeavors.

Fordham University (NY) - TT Asst. Professor - Socio-Cultural or Linguistic Anthro. - Deadline: 15 Nov. 2015[]

The Department of Sociology and Anthropology at Fordham University invites applicants for a full-time, tenure-track assistant professor position in socio-cultural or linguistic anthropology, effective September 2016. Candidates should have a Ph.D. in anthropology at the time of appointment, demonstrated excellence in teaching, an active program of research and publication, a commitment to teaching and service, and an enthusiasm for working effectively and collegially with a diverse student body. We seek applicants who have an expertise on race and an interest in one or more of the following areas: material culture, migration/immigration, and/or environmental politics. Geographic area of specialization is open with strong preference for Sub-Saharan Africa, East Asia, or South East Asia. The candidate should be able to teach anthropological theories and methods along with courses in her/his area of interest. Principal teaching responsibilities will be in the undergraduate program within Fordham College at Lincoln Center (in Manhattan), with an annual teaching load of 3-2.

Mount Holyoke College (MA) - TT Asst. Professor - Deadline: 30 Oct. 2015 -- OFFER ACCEPTED[]

The Department of Sociology and Anthropology at Mount Holyoke College invites applications for a tenure-track, assistant level anthropologist who specializes in classical and contemporary anthropological theory, beginning fall 2016. We are especially interested in candidates who conduct ethnographic research in sociolinguistics and the politics of language. This position has a 2-2 teaching load, and the successful candidate will teach courses at all levels of the curriculum including introduction to cultural anthropology and required theory courses for the major. Applicants are expected to have a Ph.D.

Mount Holyoke is an undergraduate liberal arts college for women with 2,200 students and 220 faculty. Over half of the faculty are women; one-fourth are persons of color. Mount Holyoke is located about 80 miles west of Boston in the Connecticut River valley, and is a member of the Five College Consortium consisting of Amherst, Hampshire, Mount Holyoke, and Smith Colleges and the University of Massachusetts.

The successful candidate will demonstrate competence in working with students who are broadly diverse with regard to race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, gender, nationality, sexual orientation, and religion.

Ryerson University (CAN: ON) - TT Assistant Professor - Deadline: Nov. 16[]

The Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures in the Faculty of Arts at Ryerson University, in collaboration with Arts and Contemporary Studies, invites applications for a full-time tenure-track position, at the Assistant Professor level, beginning July 1, 2016, subject to final budgetary approval. Candidates will hold a Ph.D. in Anthropology, with postdoctoral experience preferred. Candidates must have a demonstrated commitment to upholding the values of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion as it pertains to service, teaching, and scholarly, research or creative activities.

The areas of specialization include ethnography of communication, cultural and linguistic anthropology and cross-cultural diversity. Additional teaching interests in one or more world languages is also considered an asset, especially including any of the following: 1) any language currently taught in the Department, 2) a Canadian indigenous language, or 3) American Sign Language. The successful candidate will have the ability to contribute to both our undergraduate (BA) program in Language and Intercultural Relations, and to our Anthropology Option in Ryerson’s BA in Arts and Contemporary Studies. As well, the successful candidate will have an opportunity to join one of Ryerson’s interdisciplinary graduate programs, including the MA in Immigration and Settlement Studies, and the MA/Ph.D. in Communication and Culture.

As part of a university-wide cluster hire initiative, the Department of East Asian Studies at the University of Arizona seeks an Associate or advanced Assistant Professor in digital intercultural communication in Chinese or Korean languages. The ideal candidate will have an established and active research agenda focusing on telecollaboration, intercultural/cultural (mis)communication, social media/digital culture, digital literacy (or multiliteracies), technology enhanced language learning, digital humanities, or other areas in which digital intercultural communication in Chinese or Korean occurs. Experience in developing and writing grants in the candidate’s research areas is highly desirable.

Teach courses in second language acquisition, intercultural communication and other areas in the candidate’s specialization in the interdisciplinary Second Language Acquisition and Teaching (SLAT) program and the Department of East Asian Studies, and partnering with colleagues across campus in the Colleges of Humanities, Education and Social and Behavioral Sciences.

The University of Colorado Boulder seeks a scholar of Applied Linguistics for a tenure-track joint position at the rank of Assistant Professor in the departments of Linguistics and Spanish & Portuguese to begin August 2016. Candidate must have a record or promise of an active research agenda in one or more key areas of applied linguistics, such as second/heritage language acquisition, language ideology, or language contact and bilingualism. Candidates must have native or near-native proficiency in English and Spanish, the ability to direct Ph.D. dissertations and Masters Theses or exams, as well as teach undergraduate courses on heritage languages. PhD prior to the appointment is required. Job duties include a course load of four courses per year, teaching undergraduate and graduate linguistic courses in both departments, mentoring undergraduate and graduate students, and service to the University of Colorado.

The University of Pittsburgh, Department of Anthropology, invites applications for two tenure-stream positions in cultural anthropology, pending budgetary approval. We seek applicants for two positions (one at the level of assistant professor and one at open rank) whose research engages with: (1) medical anthropology, science and technology studies, or the intersection between these fields, or (2) circulation including shifting regimes of migration, finance, and language. Attention to issues of race, gender, and sexuality is welcome. Preference will be given to candidates with expertise in the study of Latin America, East Asia or Europe.

The successful candidates will be expected to pursue active programs of field research, teach undergraduate and graduate courses, and contribute to existing programmatic strengths. The appointments will begin in September 2016 and candidates are required to have degree in hand by that time.

The Department of Anthropology seeks to hire a tenure-track, full-time linguistic anthropologist at the rank of Assistant Professor. We seek a colleague with expertise in the rigorous, fine-grained structural analysis of speech at any level from phonetics to discourse, and who is committed to integrating this with anthropological theory in order to speak to larger questions about the nature of language and social life. We prefer a focus on language use in communities that are under-studied and under-represented in traditional areas of the academy; for example, indigenous languages in post-colonial contexts, or minority language varieties within nation-states. Geographic area and sub-topical specialization within linguistic anthropology are open, but preference will be given to candidates whose research and teaching interests complement those of the Department. This new colleague will join with existing linguistic anthropology faculty in maintaining a vibrant subdisciplinary presence within the Anthropology Department while fostering connections with other areas of the University, centrally including (but not limited to) the interdepartmental Linguistics M.A. program and undergraduate major.

Required: Candidates must have an ongoing program of research and publication with a focus on language in its sociocultural context that integrates in-depth analysis of language data with larger theoretical questions. They must also have a commitment to excellence in teaching and be prepared to teach courses that contribute to the interdepartmental Linguistics M.A. program and undergraduate major as well as to the Anthropology graduate and undergraduate programs. The appointment start date is August 25, 2016. Applicants must have defended their PhD dissertation by the time of application and must hold a PhD at the time of appointment.
