  • [March 1] Boilerplate rejection. Email mentions that committee received over 70 applications.
  • not just boilerplate--dismissive and disrespectful tone. And if 70 applications were received, that would make it among the smallest pool of candidates in any search this year. Really upholding the Jesuit tradition, guys.
  • There was nothing dismissive or disrespectful about the rejection I received. It was a perfectly okay rejection letter, signed by the chair. It contained information about the applicant pool, said the decision was extremely difficult, and wished us (the unsuccessful candidates) luck.
  • The letter was certainly not the most generous, but it was also far from the most dismissive I've seen in recent years. For a first-rate institution like Boston College, I agree we could expect more. The job posting was also arguably designed to limit the number of candidates and that's a whole other issue. I presume many of us that applied primarily work on 20th century Latin America and it was never clear if that was even welcomed.
