The Department of Classical, Near Eastern and Religious Studies at The University of British Columbia, Vancouver campus invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor in Hebrew Bible and Jewish Studies to commence July 1, 2021. We seek a candidate who specializes in Hebrew Bible within its Iron Age or Persian Period contexts (i.e. pre-Hellenistic era), and demonstrates knowledge of the reception of the Hebrew Bible in later Jewish traditions. We welcome candidates who will complement the existing interdisciplinary strengths of the Department, fill gaps in our current Hebrew Bible offerings, and engage with diverse approaches in their research and teaching. The candidate will also contribute to the new Minor in Jewish Studies and the new Program in Religion. The ideal candidate will demonstrate the capability of producing outstanding, cutting-edge research that will have a major impact on the field. We look for candidates who have a demonstrated track record of advancing a culture of equity and inclusion.
The successful candidate must have completed a Ph.D. in a relevant field prior to taking up the position and will be expected to develop and maintain an active, externally funded research program leading to peer-reviewed publications. We are looking for a candidate committed to innovative teaching at a large, highly diverse public institution. The successful candidate will be expected to teach courses in Hebrew Bible, biblical Hebrew, and other related areas at both the graduate and undergraduate levels. Knowledge of other ancient Near Eastern languages (e.g., Akkadian, Ugaritic, Aramaic) will be considered a plus. The successful candidate will also be expected to provide mentoring and research training for undergraduate and graduate students and to participate actively in departmental service, events, and initiatives. Engagement with Digital Humanities is an asset.

Shortlisted applicants will be asked for more extensive evidence of teaching excellence or potential for excellence (including but not limited to student evaluations and/or peer assessments, one graduate course syllabus and one undergraduate course syllabus) and to arrange to have three confidential letters of reference sent directly by their referees. Preliminary interviews will be conducted through Skype/Zoom.
This position is subject to final budgetary approval. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
Given uncertainty caused by the global COVID-19 pandemic, applicants must be prepared to conduct interviews remotely if circumstances require.
