The School of Culture and Society, Aarhus University, invites applications for a permanent position as professor of Old Testament / Hebrew Bible Studies within the Department of Theology. The position is available from 1 August 2018 or as soon as possible thereafter.

Place of employment: Jens Chr. Schous Vej 3-7, 8000 Aarhus C, Denmark.

The position: The professorship is offered with a view to attracting a particularly talented person who is expected to play a key role in the continued creation of innovative, internationally recognised research. The successful applicant is expected to contribute to core activities at the School of Culture and Society in general and the study of the Old Testament / Hebrew Bible in particular in the following areas: research, education, talent development and knowledge exchange. The professor will also be expected to provide academic leadership relating to research, education and academic development as well as contributing actively to the further development of the department, both nationally and internationally.

Research: The Department of Theology at Aarhus University has a pronounced and significant international profile and a strong research network. The successful applicant will be expected to take a leading role in developing the research programme with special emphasis on the Old Testament / Hebrew Bible in its historical, literary and theological context and to contribute to research initiatives in terms of new research projects with internal and external partners, including the attraction and administration of external research funding.

Applicants must therefore be able to document academic qualifications at the highest international level within the field of Old Testament / Hebrew Bible research. It is of vital importance that the successful applicant takes part in the daily activities of the department.

Education: Applicants should be prepared to teach and contribute to developing courses, learning and supervision on Old Testament / Hebrew Bible Studies at all levels of the department’s degree programmes in theology (BA, MA and PhD), and will be expected to have considerable teaching experience at university level. Applicants must also be able to collaborate on teaching in connection with other degree programmes offered by the School of Culture and Society, such as the departments of the Study of Religion, Philosophy and the History of Ideas, History and Archaeology.

Talent development: The successful applicant is expected to be able to identify the development potential of junior researchers and to contribute to the talent development and supervision of PhD students and to teaching and developing PhD courses.

Knowledge exchange: It is expected that the successful applicant will engage in knowledge exchange as mentioned in the strategy for the Faculty of Arts, for instance in cooperation with civil society actors or in connection with the public dissemination of knowledge. Applicants should document any prior experience within the field of knowledge exchange.

Qualifications: Applicants are expected to formulate a vision for the contribution of their research to the wider field of Old Testament / Hebrew Bible Studies. Applicants must be able to document: Academic publications at the highest international level, corresponding to a Danish higher doctoral degree, including research innovation in the field of Old Testament / Hebrew Bible Studies. Thorough knowledge of historical-critical and contextual approaches to the exegesis and theology of the Old Testament / Hebrew Bible. Thorough knowledge of relevant human and social science fields which are relevant to Old Testament / Hebrew Bible research. Thorough knowledge of sources and cultures in the Ancient Near East, adjacent to Ancient Israel and Judah. Experience of active participation in international research collaboration. Experience of research organisation, including the obtaining and administration of external funding in the field of Old Testament / Hebrew Bible Studies. Strong teaching competences and experience of supervising at all levels. Commitment to teaching development, the supervision of student projects, talent development, research management, and the development of PhD courses.

College of Charleston (SC) - Director of Yaschik/Arnold Jewish Studies Program (Assoc. Prof. or Prof. Rank)[]

The College of Charleston seeks a dynamic scholar, teacher, and leader at the associate or full professor rank to become Director of the Yaschik/Arnold Jewish Studies Program, the premier program of its kind in South Carolina. Assisted by a robust support team and a substantial endowment, the director will guide and sustain the Program’s distinctive threefold model of academic excellence, community outreach, and student life. 

The Program is housed in the Jewish Studies Center, a 15,000–sq. ft. facility on campus with classrooms and offices, a multi-purpose lecture hall, and a kosher dining hall. The Program includes four faculty lines, an endowed chair of Holocaust Studies, and an endowed visiting chair. It is also home to endowed centers for Southern Jewish Culture and Holocaust Studies. Jewish Studies enjoys a long-standing collaboration with the Jewish Historical Society of South Carolina, a statewide grassroots organization, and the Jewish Heritage Collection, a renowned repository of archival material on southern Jewish life. The Program recently completed a $10 million capital campaign. 

The director will serve as a full-time faculty member in the Jewish Studies Program, which is in the School of Languages, Cultures, and World Affairs. She or he is expected to have research and teaching interests in Jewish Studies or a related field, an established record of publication, and be qualified for tenure at the associate or full professor rank. Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience and qualifications. The position’s overall workload includes a reduced teaching load commensurate with administrative duties.

College of the Holy Cross (MA) - Hebrew Bible/Old Testament[]

The Department of Religious Studies at the College of the Holy Cross invites applications for a full-time tenure-track appointment to begin in August 2018, in Hebrew Bible/Old Testament. We particularly welcome candidates with contemporary methodological frameworks such as post-colonial, ecological, critical race theory, or feminist approaches. Candidates must demonstrate a commitment to, and excellence in, undergraduate teaching at the introductory and advanced levels as well as scholarly achievement. Ph.D. required.

College of Idaho (ID) - Howard Berger-Ray Neilsen Endowed Chair of Judaic Studies[]

The Department of History at The College of Idaho invites applications for an open-rank tenure-track appointment to the Berger-Neilsen Endowed Chair of Judaic Studies to begin in fall 2018. This position is the first endowed chair in Judaic Studies in the state of Idaho, and one of the few such chairs in the Pacific Northwest and the intermountain region.

The successful candidate will be a passionate, engaged teacher and productive scholar, who can provide outreach to the broader campus and local communities. The responsibilities of the Chair also include administering the fully endowed Craig H. Neilsen Foundation Lectureship in Judaic Studies. 

Research specialization for this position is open, but candidates should be able to teach at least one course on modern Israel broadly defined.  Preference will be given to candidates who can offer engaging undergraduate courses on various topics of Jewish history, religion, and/or foundational texts (Tanakh, Mishnah, and Talmud).  The ideal candidate would also be able to teach courses that would be accessible to a broad range of undergraduate students (e.g., courses on modern Middle East, north Africa, greater Mediterranean, and so forth).  Candidates must have PhD in hand at the time of appointment in August 2018.

College of William and Mary (VA) - Hebrew Bible and Israelite Religion[]

The Department of Religious Studies at the College of William and Mary seeks applications for a tenure track position at the Assistant Professor level in Hebrew Bible and Israelite Religion. We are seeking a colleague with a demonstrable commitment to teaching excellence whose expertise in the history and literature of the Israelite period will complement our faculty line in New Testament and Christian Origins. Particularly welcome are applicants with secondary research interests in the material culture of ancient Israel or in the cognate cultures of the ancient Near East. The normal teaching load is two courses per semester.

Georgetown University (DC) - Jewish Civilization, Art, and International Affairs[]

The Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service of Georgetown University invites applications for a position at the rank of Assistant Professor (tenure track) in Jewish Civilization, Art, and International Affairs to begin in the Fall of 2018. The successful candidate’s research will draw broad and meaningful comparisons across cultures, time, and space. She or he will scrutinize the manner in which Jewish artists, past and present, have attempted to make sense of issues of global concern to the Jewish people. Such issues may include, but are not restricted to, the formation of the State of Israel, the Jewish State’s geopolitical relations with its Middle East neighbors, the standing of diaspora communities, international norms of social justice as refracted through the prism of Jewish ethics and theology, economic and political theory.

Competitive applicants will have a primary specialization in a relevant field of Jewish studies, but may possess sub-specializations which permit him or her to identify links with the other cultures, religions, ethnic groups scrutinized by the specialists in international affairs affiliated with the School of Foreign Service (e.g., African Studies, Asian Studies, Latin American Studies). The successful candidate for this position will demonstrate a creative and original research agenda, as well as excellence in the classroom and in the related areas of course design, curricular development, and student mentoring. The chosen candidate will also be expected to retain the competence necessary to teach one of our two undergraduate Gateway courses, (“Jewish Texts Across Time and Space,” and/or “Diplomacy, Politics and International Relations in Jewish Perspective”).

In 2016, the Program for Jewish Civilization (founded in 2003) was renamed the Center for Jewish Civilization. The CJC is supported by an endowment of 21 million dollars. Being the only Jewish studies unit of its kind located in a school of foreign service and international studies, its many scholars and practitioners culled from the government and public service explore issues pertaining to the modern State of Israel, Jewish political thought, Jewish-Catholic relations, Holocaust Studies, and the Jewish diaspora.

Gustavus Adolphus College (MN) - Jewish Studies[]

Gustavus Adolphus College invites applications for a full-time tenure-track position of Assistant Professor (or Associate with appropriate qualifications) in the Department of Religion to begin September 1, 2018. The successful candidate will be appointed as the inaugural endowed chair of Jewish studies, which includes an annual stipend and professional development funds. The purpose of the endowed chair is to advance the teaching of Jewish studies and to facilitate a hospitable environment for Jewish religious life on campus.

Required Qualifications: We seek candidates who have an earned doctorate in Jewish Studies or a cognate field with an emphasis on Judaism, but will consider candidates who have achieved ABD status and will complete their degree by September 1, 2018. The successful candidate will have demonstrated effectiveness in teaching and a commitment to teaching and advising undergraduates. Candidates must have a clear research and publication trajectory. A commitment to interreligious cooperation and understanding, the ability to mentor Jewish students, and the ability to support students in the cultivation of Jewish religious life are essential.

Preferred Qualifications: We prefer the ability to teach in dialogue with at least one other religious tradition, in particular with some Christian theological sources. The ability to contribute to general education and to provide courses that contribute to an interdisciplinary program, such as Peace, Justice, and Conflict Studies or Gender, Women, and Sexuality Studies is welcome. Experience participating in and/or leading Jewish religious and community life is advantageous. Finally, we welcome candidates who appreciate Gustavus's mission as a church-related (ELCA) liberal arts college.

Major/Essential Functions: Gustavus faculty engage in teaching, research, and service. The annual course load for tenure-track and tenured faculty is six courses; the holder of the Jewish studies endowed position will receive an annual two-course release for administrative responsibilities. All endowed chairs at Gustavus are appointed for renewable three-year terms.

Teaching: Primary teaching responsibilities will include Introduction to Judaism and upper-level courses in the individual's area of expertise. Additional teaching responsibilities may include courses contributing to general education, such as First Term Seminar, interdisciplinary programs, or a January term course involving experiential learning.

Administration and Outreach: Administrative duties associated with the endowed position will include: collaborate with various offices on campus (e.g., Chaplains' Office, Admission) to support the religious life and practice of Jewish students; serve on the college's Interfaith Advisory Board; develop interfaith events both on- and off-campus; and cultivate Gustavus's relationships with regional Jewish congregations and agencies.

Harvard University (MA) - Tenured Professor in Hebrew Bible[]

The Department of Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations seeks to appoint a tenured professor of Hebrew Bible. The Hebrew Bible should be the focus of a candidate’s research and teaching. Candidates are expected to be able to situate the Hebrew Bible within its Ancient Near Eastern context as well as treat post-Biblical Scriptural tradition in Judaism and Christianity. The professor of Hebrew Bible will be appointed in the Department of Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations and will work with colleagues in the Committee on the Study of Religion, the Harvard Divinity School, and other departments in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences.

The appointment is expected to begin on July 1, 2019. The professor will teach and advise at the undergraduate and graduate levels.

Basic Qualifications: Candidates are required to have a doctorate or the equivalent.

Michigan State University (MI) - Judaism[]

The Department of Religious Studies in the College of Arts & Letters at Michigan State University is seeking applications for a tenure system opening at the rank of Assistant Professor with a specialization in Judaism. The successful candidate will be appointed on an academic year basis and will engage in an active program of teaching (normally, two courses per semester), research and service, including teaching in the College of Arts and Letters' general education program in the Interdisciplinary Arts and Humanities and contributing to the College of Arts & Letters commitment to inclusion and diversity.

Founded in 1948, the Department of Religious Studies is a vital presence in the College of Arts & Letters at Michigan State University, featuring outstanding teachers, engaged students, a lively series of public events and outreach activities. Brandeis University (MA) - Israel Institute Post-doctoral Fellowship in Israel Studies 2018-2019[]

The Schusterman Center for Israel Studies at Brandeis University invites applications for our Israel Institute Post-doctoral Fellowship in Israel Studies 2018-2019. Priority given to PhDs in Gender Studies, Economics, Politics, Social Sciences, and Theater, Film and Media Studies. The fellow will teach one course per semester in Israel Studies, in the relevant Brandeis department. The fellow is expected to be in residence at Brandeis University, participate actively in the intellectual life of the Schusterman Center for Israel Studies, and present at least one public lecture. Center for Jewish History (NY) - NEH Fellowship for Senior Scholars[]

Center for Jewish History offers a fellowship to senior scholars through a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities. The award supports original research at the Center in the humanities, including but not limited to Jewish studies, Russian and East European studies, American studies and Germanic studies, as well as musicology, linguistics, anthropology, sociology and history. Applications are welcome from college and university faculty in any field who have completed a PhD more than six years prior to the start of the fellowship and whose research will benefit considerably from consultation with materials in the collections of the Center’s partners – American Jewish Historical Society, American Sephardi Federation, Leo Baeck Institute, Yeshiva University Museum, and YIVO Institute for Jewish Research. Fellowships carry a stipend of up to $50,400 for a period of one year. Fellows are expected to conduct original research at the Center, deliver at least one lecture based on the research conducted, actively participate in the scholarly community at the Center, acknowledge the Center and NEH in all publications resulting from research completed during the fellowship, and submit a report upon completion of the fellowship describing the experience.

Columbia University (NY) - Rabin-Shvidler Post-Doctoral Fellowship in Jewish Studies[]

  • Columbia University’s Institute for Israel and Jewish Studies and Fordham University’s Jewish Studies Program announce a post-doctoral fellowship in Jewish Studies for the 2018-2019 academic year. The fellowship will consist of a stipend of $50,000, with an additional subsidy for travel and relocation. Fellows will be affiliated with both institutions.
  • This fellowship is open to scholars in all fields of Jewish Studies; preference will be given to scholars who strengthen and/or complement the intellectual interests of the faculty at both institutions.
  • Requirements are a Ph.D. granted between June 1, 2014, and June 30, 2018, and an excellent command of Hebrew. Jewish Theological Seminary of America (NY) - Assistant Professor of Rabbinic Literature (3 yr appt.)[]

McGill University (CAN) - Simon and Ethel Flegg Postdoctoral Research Fellowship[]

The Department of Jewish Studies, McGill University, invites applications for the Simon and Ethel Flegg Postdoctoral Research Fellowship. The fellowship is for the 2018-2019 academic year and can be renewed once. This year’s competition is focused on Kabbalah – mystical traditions and mystical movements from the thirteenth century to 2000. Scholars working on any aspect of this topic are invited to apply. Fellows will be given consideration for teaching one course in the Fall term and one course in the Winter term, contingent upon availability. Fellows will also deliver a public lecture during the academic year and participate actively in the intellectual life of the department. The successful candidate will receive a stipend of $52,000 CAD (plus benefits), in addition to a research allowance of $8500. Northwestern University (IL) - Sava Ranisavljevic Postdoctoral Fellowship in Judeo-Spanish Studies[]

University of Virginia (VA) - Asst. Professor of Modern Hebrew (3 yr. appt. - renewable)[]

The Department of Middle Eastern and South Asian Languages and Cultures (MESALC) at the University of Virginia invites applications for a full-time Assistant Professor, General Faculty (tenure-ineligible) in Modern Hebrew. This is a three-year, renewable appointment. The appointment begins with the fall term 2018 with an anticipated start date of July 25, 2018.

The successful applicant will have native or near-native fluency in Israeli Hebrew, demonstrated excellence in teaching Modern Hebrew at an American university, experience developing academic programs, and the ability to contribute to the University's Jewish Studies, Global Studies, and Digital Humanities programs. This position also requires a record of innovation and sophistication in second-language pedagogy that integrates texts derived from the Israeli electronic mediascape while developing students' transnational literacies alongside language skills. Teaching responsibilities include first- and second-year language classes in Modern Israeli Hebrew, as well as advanced Hebrew Language courses that focus on conversational skills, media Hebrew, or topics in Israeli literature, film or culture. This position carries a teaching load of three courses per semester. Yale University (CT) - Postdoctoral Associate in Medieval Jewish History[]
