  • Email request for AAR/SBL interview on 11/14.
  • ^^ How many who got interviews are ABD? How many PhD in hand (x1)?- I had an interview, and I have PhD in hand.
  • Me too- PhD in hand.
  • ANyone who got an interview hear about campus visits yet? <-- No word yet on my end. I was told in the interview that they would make a decision by the holidays, so I'm fairly certain the silence is bad news. I'm guessing those who got invites aren't on the wiki page.
  • They told me they would get back to me the beginning of January. Good luck all!
  • Would those who had interviews be willing to share what their primary subfield within Jewish Studies is?
  • Sure- Rabbinics for me.
  • I have not posted previously. Had AAR interview. Have not heard otherwise. I am an associate (tenured) professor, specialty contemporary American Judaism. My understanding of the timeline was slightly different; I was told during the interview that they would be scheduling campus interviews in February or later and might not be in contact until they all return to campus in late January. On the one hand, that is quite late. On the other hand--from my experience on hiring committees, scheduling really can be crazy. Good luck to all!
  • I was given the same timeline - end of January.
  • Has anyone heard anything further?
  • Not here, but this is their first week back, so even if they manage to meet this week, they might not get a chance to arrange and send out emails till next week. It's obviously possible that they already invited their finalists and are just not on the wiki, but it's also possible that we'll hear next week.  Torture, I know, but for now, all is not lost.
  • Job talks scheduled.
  • Well then.  I guess as is lost after all.  Congrats to the finalists.
  • Received email today (4/8) that search has been concluded and offer accepted.

  • I heard this is a spousal hire. Anyone else heard anything?
  • I didn't even apply. [posted Oct. 22]
  • Its so obvious it's embarrassing
  • Didn't they hire her last year?
  • Heard they didn't get their act together in time. Dean's wife chair of search, should be a go this time around. Expect early decision.
  • Ding, ding. Search has concluded, as expected.
  • Shocker!! What a waste of people's time, money and dignity. This kind of academic shenanigan makes my blood boil. I'm sure this type of maneuver can be legally challenged, but who's going to bother, right? Anyhow. I'm sure the candidate is pleased with the result and sees nothing wrong with her/his self entitlement.
  • Presumably true, but at the very least, the domino effect of the shenanigans is a new legit search in the field, just posted...
  • The best are not always the brightest. Are they inviting one or multiple finalists?

  • What materials?

  • Oct. 29: Email request for more materials (x2)
  • Oct. 29: A request for further additional materials (See above 10/22) or a new request for more materials?
  • It seemed to me that it was the same request others received on Oct. 22, just at a later date.  The only reasons I can come up with for why they would do this is that they wanted to stagger the request dates so as not to be inundated with materials, or that they weren't that enthusiastic about the materials received on Oct. 22 and wanted to broaden the pool in order to find more acceptable semi-finalists.  I don't know, just speculating here.
  • Nov. 13: Email for interview (x5)
  • For those of you who received interview requests, were your additional materials requested on 10/22 or 10/29?
  • 10/22 (x4)
  • Email request for interview on 11/14.  Seems like they're staggering their requests for some reason.

Yale University, Judaic Studies Program - Modern Jewish History (Tenured Position)[]

Yale University's Program in Judaic Studies seeks to fill a tenured position in modern Jewish history. Primary academic affiliation will be in the Program in Judaic Studies, with anticipated appointment in the Departments of History and Religious Studies, as befits the successful candidate's fields of specialization and methodologies within Jewish history. Candidates are expected to have broad familiarity with the critical study of Jewish history, whether social, cultural, political, religious, or intellectual, while specializing in modern Jewish history in the Americas, Western or Eastern Europe, North Africa, or the Middle East. Candidates should be thoroughly fluent in Hebrew as a language of both primary sources and contemporary scholarship, as well as at least one other modern Jewish language (e.g., Yiddish, Ladino) or host cultural language. They should be well-grounded in modern critical approaches to the study of history, including the ability to situate Jewish society and its history within broader cultural and comparative contexts. Candidates should have an outstanding record of excellence in publication and teaching, the latter at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. The successful candidate will be expected to provide academic support to existing resources for the study of modern Jewish history, working closely with colleagues in the Program in Judaic Studies as well as in relevant departments and programs. Yale University is an equal opportunity/affirmative action employer. Yale values diversity among its students, staff and faculty and strongly encourages applications from women and underrepresented minority scholars.

  • Applications, with current vitae, should be submitted online https://academicjobsonline.org/ajo/jobs/2629. Inquiries and nominations can be sent by e-mail to the chair of the search committee, at renee.reed@yale.edu.
  • Applications will be reviewed beginning September 1, 2013.
  • What is the rank? Assistant tenure-track or associate? Can anyone disambiguate?
  • First line of the ad reads: "tenured position in modern Jewish history." So I assume rank is associate level or higher.
  • They are looking for a full professor, is my understanding, though in theory it is open to tenured associate also.
  • This is the search to fill the position that Paula Hyman had. They are looking for a major, established scholar in the field.

  • Applications should be sent to <Postdoc@jtsa.edu>. *Applicants who have submitted all materials by November 11, 2013 will be given full consideration.
  • Application received - they will contact applicants by 12/10.
  • For what it's worth my confirmation said they will contact applicants in the second half of November. But that was pretty early so maybe they pushed back to December now. (Update 11/19: I received a second confirmation that had the 12/10 date, so that seems to be confirmed)
  • Anyone have any news?  Requests for materials, etc?
  • Nothing yet, but as noted above they may have pushed the notification timetable into December. (11/18)
  • Just heard from a reliable source that the search committee is made up primarily of ancient Judaism scholars.  They are evidently looking for someone who can augment their rabbinics/biblical studies offerings.  That leaves me out of things, but for those of you who work on ancient Judaism, this is good news! Good luck everyone!
  • That sucks. I get so tired of a lack of transperency in the job market. If you are not going to consider ABDs, specify degree in hand; if you want a senior scholar, don't say open rank. And if you want someone in rabbinics, say "specialty in rabbincs desirable." We all waste so much time and money applying for jobs and fellowships for which we won't even be considered, and if everyone would just be more up front about things it would save everyone time and effort. (x2)
  • Hi again.  I am the person who mentioned that the postdoc will likely be filled with ancient Judaism/rabbincs scholar.  I just wanted to say that it does indeed suck. They asked for scholars from all areas of Jewish Studies, but that is not in fact what they wanted.  Why on earth do they want 50 applications that are of no use/interest?  It just baffles me.  I wasted my time carefull putting together materials, etc.
  • I think there may be various answers to your question. First, they would like to allow themselves maximum flexibility to the very last moment, in case they are unhappy with the applicant pool or, who knows, someone really brilliant comes along in another field. Second, even though the committee is made up "primarily of ancient Judaism scholars," that does not have to mean that  "they are evidently looking for someone who can augment their rabbinics/biblical studies" - and even if so, it is not official. Who knows, perhaps the money comes from a source for all fields of Jewish Studies, so they cannot limit the scope of its application officially. Sometimes the members of the committee are on it by chance - other people are busy. Nevertheless, in practice, such composition of the committee tends to lean towards their own fields.
  • I think i understand quite well why, in theory, a search committee who really wants an ancient Judaism scholar would cast a far wider net.  But I think that, more often than not, search committees know very well what they are looking for in a cadidate and simply (for whatever reasons) don't include that information in the job description.  In the case of this particular postdoc, the head of the search committee admitted openly that they were looking someone who specialize in rabbinics/Bible. When I wrote that "evidently" they are looking for someone who specializes in the ancient period, I meant that it they have literally admitted that this is what they are looking for.  Again, I understand that committees may want to be open to some "brilliant" scholar from another discipline, but I don't think this is actually the case very often.  It is, in my opinion, more likely that the academic job market neither cares about nor values transparency, for whatever bizarre reasons.  Anyway, good luck, ancient Judaism peeps!!
  • The simplest solution is to write in the job add "preference is given to.. although other fields will be considered." Or simply require just a CV and a project proposal from people in other fields, which can serve as ground for consideration. But, true, they don't really care. (x2)
  • JTS just posted an ad for two jobs, one TT and one 3-year NT, in either Ancient Judaism, Jewish Philosophy/Ethics, or Social Science discipline that studies a contemporary Jewish community. If that is the case, it strikes me that it might be open-season on the postdoc again. But who knows.
  • My understanding is that there are two postdocs. Maybe one will go to Ancient Judaism, but the other one won't. At least last year there were two.
  • Official email rejection, more than 80 applications, but they did notifiy exactly when they said they would, so that was nice. (12/10 x4)
  • Invitation for skype interview. (12/10)
  • Email (12/10) saying they were interested in my application and would let me know the status of it early in the spring semester.  I wonder what that means?? Why no Skype interview but no rejection, if they have already sent out emails to that effect?? (12/10 x 3)
  • Submitted application and it was received, but haven't heard anything today as of 4 PM Eastern time.  Hmm.
  • To the other person (other than myself!) who got the email indicating they would contact you in the spring semester, what is your area of study?  I am in modern/contemporary Jewish thought, PhD in hand. Modern Hebrew Lit, PhD in hand.
  • Anyone have any additional news?
  • Was told mid-January that those of us who have not yet been rejected or interviewed would hear something in a few weeks. So maybe first week of February? I assume they are waiting for their chosen candidate to sign a contract.
  • Has anyone heard anything in the wake of the skype interviews?
  • Position offered and accepted (3/10)
  • Congrats!!  I just wanted to mention that I received a very thoughtful and articulate rejection email yesterday.  Kudos to JTS for being so respectful of the applicants.  It is a rare thing!!  Thanks, JTS!
