Arizona State University, Barrett Honors College  - Lecturer (Renewable) 

• The Barrett Honors College of Arizona State University is expanding its faculty and invites applications for a position in the core Honors faculty. The faculty members of Barrett are non-tenure track Lecturers, Senior Lecturers, and Principal Lecturers; most are on three-year renewable and rolling appointments. The main teaching responsibility rests on a two-semester interdisciplinary seminar course, The Human Event, in which students examine important ideas from earliest writings to the present. Special attention is given to critical thinking and argumentative writing skills. In addition, faculty members teach upper-division seminars, and mentor honors students throughout their four years in independent studies, individual conferences, theses, and other forms of scholarly achievement.

The typical Barrett freshman is in the top five percent of his or her high school class, has SAT scores of 1320 or above, and has a high school grade-point average of 3.81.

Brandeis University - Director of the Hebrew Language and Literature Program and Professor (open rank) of Hebrew

Brandeis University seeks to fill the position of Director of the Brandeis Hebrew Language and Literature Program and Associate Professor or Professor of the Practice in Hebrew in the Department of Near Eastern and Judaic Studies (NEJS) at Brandeis University. This position carries a four-course teaching load per year and administrative responsibility for the Hebrew program. The Director is responsible for maintaining a Hebrew program which meets the language needs of undergraduates and graduate and professional program students, including students of Hebrew and majors or minors in NEJS, graduate students in NEJS, students in the Hornstein Jewish Professional Leadership Program, the Master of Arts in Teaching programs, the Master of Arts in Hebrew Teaching, and the Delet program for prospective Jewish day school teachers. The selected candidate will also supervise testing and placement of Hebrew language students and Hebrew language student advising in these various programs.

The rank for this position is open and depending on qualifications and experience, may be within or outside of the tenure structure. Candidates holding a PhD by the beginning of the appointment term are preferred. The ideal candidate will have at least five years of relevant teaching experience, demonstrated skills in supporting and supervising language teaching faculty, an interest in program development, and active involvement in major areas of Hebrew pedagogy and instruction and pedagogical theory.

Brandeis University - Jack, Joseph and Morton Mandel Center for Studies in Jewish Education

Brandeis University announces a new faculty position, the Jack, Joseph and Morton Mandel Chair in Jewish Education Research, to begin in Fall 2014.

The new chair will be shared between the Jack, Joseph and Morton Mandel Center for Studies in Jewish Education and an appropriate academic department. The chair will pursue a program of research in Jewish education, participate actively in the intellectual community, and teach two courses per year. Candidates should hold a doctorate, have a record of scholarship and a rich research agenda, and have experience with Jewish educational settings. Ideal candidates will have a research interest in the study of learning and learners.

Brooklyn College, CUNY - American Jewish Studies

The Department of Judaic Studies invites applications for an Assistant Professor in American Jewish Studies to teach at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Collaborative teaching efforts with other academic departments and programs are expected, as is willingness to participate in departmental administration. This is a tenure track position with a start date of Fall 2014. All appointments are subject to financial availability.

QUALIFICATIONS: Active research and continuing publications are preconditions for appointment. PhD required. Preference will be given to a specialist in American Jewish Studies who can teach courses on North America including the Jews of New York and the Jewish Diaspora, and can also teach courses in the Studies in Religion program. Collaborative teaching will be with departments such as History, Sociology, Anthropology, and Puerto Rican Studies, and with programs such as Comparative Literature, and Caribbean Studies. Ability to teach Hebrew language and literature would be valued. Strong background in Judaic Studies is essential. Candidates with publications are preferred. Evidence of teaching excellence is required. Writing samples will only be required of finalists.

COMPENSATION: $61,903 - $74,133; commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Brown University - Jewish Thought

Brown University’s Program in Judaic Studies seeks to appoint a tenure-track assistant professor in the field of Jewish thought. We welcome applications in any area of Jewish thought (e.g., intellectual history; religious studies; philosophy; ethics; political theory) from the Middle Ages to the present. The candidate should have facility in classical Jewish sources (e.g., Bible; rabbinic literature). The ideal candidate would complement the strengths of and work closely with colleagues both in the Program in Judaic Studies and in the department most relevant to her/his area(s) of specialization.

A Ph.D. must be completed by the start date, July 1, 2014.

City College of New York, CUNY - Assistant Professor, Jewish Studies (Hebrew and Yiddish)

The Division of Humanities and Arts at The City College (CCNY) of the City University of New York (CUNY) announces a major expansion of its Jewish Studies program, aided by a generous gift from Michael and Irene Ross. We invite applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor in Hebrew and Yiddish. Applicants may be scholars of Jewish literature or historians who work with Hebrew and Yiddish sources. The specific chronological and geographic focus is open. The faculty appointment will be to the appropriate department. The position begins Fall 2014.

The Jewish Studies Program at CCNY attracts a largely non-Jewish student body, with nearly 1000 registering for the program's classes each academic year. College of Idaho - Berger-Neilsen Endowed Chair in Judaic Studies

The College of Idaho invites applications from dynamic teachers and creative scholars for the fully endowed Berger- Neilsen Chair of Judaic Studies (funded in part by a National Endowment for the Humanities challenge grant). This will be the first endowed chair in Judaic Studies in the state of Idaho, and one of the few such chairs in the Pacific Northwest and the  intermountain region. This Chair will be characterized by a conscious partnership with local Jewish leaders and communities throughout the region. The Program the Chair oversees will broadly explore Judaism and the role Jewish people and culture have played in shaping human experience.

The responsibilities of the Chair will include teaching five courses a year on a wide range of subjects, directly administering the fully endowed Craig H. Neilsen Foundation Lectureship in Judaic Studies at The College of Idaho, and designing fund-raising and community outreach plans. The Lectureship Program will be an outstanding opportunity to develop a vibrant intellectual community in Boise, Sun Valley, and throughout the region through lectures and classes on Jewish religion, culture, and history. 

Specialization for this interdisciplinary position is open, but preference will be given to candidates who can offer engaging undergraduate courses on various aspects of Jewish history, especially Modern Israel, as well as Jewish religion, including the study of Jewish texts (the Tanach, Mishnah, and Talmud), and, potentially, classical Hebrew.  The Chair will have the opportunity to participate in study abroad in Israel or other regions as appropriate. Ph.D. is required for this tenure-track position. Rank and compensation will be commensurate with experience.

Columbia University (NY) - TT Assistant or Associate Professor, Jewish and Israel Studies

The Department of Religion and the Institute for Israel and Jewish Studies at Columbia University invite applications for a shared appointment to the first Carl and Bernice Witten Professorship of Jewish and Israel Studies, at the level of tenure-track assistant professor, tenure-track associate professor, or tenured associate professor. This position will be located in the Department of Religion. Primary areas of desired specialization include Jewish mysticism and Jewish thought and philosophy. The ideal candidate should possess, in addition to mastery of Hebrew and relevant Jewish languages, evidence of or promise of excellence in teaching and in scholarship in the field of Jewish Studies. Harvard University - Professor of Jewish History and Culture (Open Rank)

The Department of Near Eastern Languages and Civilization seeks to appoint a tenure-track or tenured professor in Jewish history and culture, with special emphasis on the civilization of Spanish-Portuguese Jewry both within the Iberian Peninsula and throughout the Sephardic diaspora. The successful candidate will have a thorough knowledge of Jewish literature and culture of the Iberian Peninsula in both Hebrew and Arabic and be able to study them within their Islamic – Arabic contexts. Ideally, the candidate will also be conversant with the history and culture of Christian Iberia in the Middle Ages. It is expected that the successful candidate will participate actively in both the Department of Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations and the Program in Medieval Studies. Jewish Theological Seminary - Two Assistant Professors of Jewish Studies

The Jewish Theological Seminary invites applications for two faculty appointments at the rank of assistant professor beginning July 1, 2014:

Lafayette College - Religious Studies (Jewish Studies)

Lafayette College announces a position open to applicants at any rank, beginning fall 2014, for a scholar with expertise in Jewish Studies to be appointed as the Philip and Muriel Berman Scholar. In addition to teaching courses in his/her area of specialization, the successful candidate will teach courses in world religions, and contribute to the College’s interdisciplinary programs as well as the Berman Center for Jewish Studies. • I have not posted previously. Had AAR interview. Have not heard otherwise. I am an associate (tenured) professor, specialty contemporary American Judaism. My understanding of the timeline was slightly different; I was told during the interview that they would be scheduling campus interviews in February or later and might not be in contact until they all return to campus in late January. On the one hand, that is quite late. On the other hand--from my experience on hiring committees, scheduling really can be crazy. Good luck to all!

Missouri State University - Religious Studies (post-Biblical Judaism)

MISSOURI STATE UNIVERSITY, Department of Religious Studies, anticipates an August 2014 opening for an assistant professor specializing in post-biblical Judaism, tenure eligible.

Candidates are required to have a Ph.D. completed by August 1, 2014, and must demonstrate strong potential in teaching and research. The successful candidate will teach undergraduate and M.A. courses in Judaism and will regularly teach one of the department's survey courses. University of California, Santa Cruz - Ancient Comparative Mediterranean Studies

Primary focus in texts and languages of the ancient Mediterranean. The successful applicant will be competent to teach texts at all levels in both ancient Greek and classical Latin. Preference will be given to applicants whose research and teaching areas include a relevant third language literature such as Arabic (classical), Hebrew (Biblical/rabbinic), Iranian (Avestan, Old and Middle Persian), or Sanskrit. University of Potsdam (School of Jewish Theology) - Endowed Professorship of Jewish Liturgy and Comparative Ritual Studies

The Faculty of Arts at the University of Potsdam currently establishes a (worldwide) unique center for academic Jewish theology. It realizes a 200 year old demand formulated by Rabbi Abraham Geiger. He wanted Jewish theology created as an equal subject to the Christian theologies at German universities. Finally, in the winter semester 2013/14 we form now the new “School of Jewish Theology” in co-operation with the Abraham Geiger College and the Zacharias Frankel College for rabbinical training. The tasks of the professorship are to carry out research and teaching in the field of Jewish liturgy in its historical development stages and various religious characteristics, especially liberal and conservative Judaism. This includes life and annual cycle rituals as well as the musical arrangement of liturgy. Religious legal issues should also be considered.

Applicants should be capable of taking a comparative and ritual-theoretical perspective of other religions. Their doctorate and research should belong to this field. The tasks include active participation in the coordination of the Centre for interreligious studies (currently being started up) which, as a central scientific unit of the university, should establish broad thematic networking with all faculties.

Applications from ordained graduates of rabbinical seminaries which are recognised in Germany as universities (H+) in accordance with the standards of the German ministers of education and cultural affairs are particularly welcome.

According to State law (Brandenburgisches Hochschulgesetz - BbgHG), preconditions for the appointment as a Junior Professor include a completed university education, teaching skills, and a special qualification for academic work, which is usually demonstrated though an outstanding PhD thesis. International experience, an outstanding publication record and a teaching record are advantageous. The total time for completion of the PhD and subsequent post-doc employment should not have exceeded six years.

The Faculty of Arts at the University of Potsdam currently establishes a (worldwide) unique center for academic Jewish theology. It realizes a 200 year old demand formulated by Rabbi Abraham Geiger. He wanted Jewish theology created as an equal subject to the Christian theologies at German universities. Finally, in the winter semester 2013/14 we form now the new “School of Jewish Theology” in co-operation with the Abraham Geiger College and the Zacharias Frankel College for rabbinical training. The holder of this professorship shall represent the discipline of “History of Jewish Religion and Thought“ in research and teaching in its entire breadth. The professorship deals with the worldwide history of Jewish religion and thought from the time of the Second Temple until the present. A focus should be put on Rabbinical Judaism.

The holder is to represent his or her area as a core discipline in preparation for the training of rabbis and cantors. Despite this, Jewish theology is also taught without an emphasis on congregational involvement. This requires a willingness to co-operate with the Institute for Jewish and Religious Studies and with the Centre for Interreligious Studies at Potsdam University (now being established) as well as the Berlin-Brandenburg Centre for Jewish Studies.

The duties of the professorship do not only include research and work in the university bodies of self-administration, but also teaching in the courses of studies leading to B.A. and M.A. degrees in the areas of “Jewish Theology”, “Jewish Studies” and “Religious Sciences”. The professorship also includes the supervision on post graduate and post doctoral level.

The position requires a special familiarity with Jewish insider perspectives and positions. Any applicant shall belong to a Jewish congregation.

Any applicant needs to have pedagogical and didactical skills at university level, must hold a postdoctoral thesis or comparable qualification in History of Religion, Jewish or Judaic Studies. Jewish Theological Seminary - Postdoctoral Fellowship in Jewish Studies

• That sucks. I get so tired of a lack of transperency in the job market. If you are not going to consider ABDs, specify degree in hand; if you want a senior scholar, don't say open rank. And if you want someone in rabbinics, say "specialty in rabbincs desirable." We all waste so much time and money applying for jobs and fellowships for which we won't even be considered, and if everyone would just be more up front about things it would save everyone time and effort. • Hi again.  I am the person who mentioned that the postdoc will likely be filled with ancient Judaism/rabbincs scholar.  I just wanted to say that it does indeed suck. They asked for scholars from all areas of Jewish Studies, but that is not in fact what they wanted.  Why on earth do they want 50 applications that are of no use/interest?  It just baffles me.  I wasted my time carefull putting together materials, etc.
• I think there may be various answers to your question. First, they would like to allow themselves maximum flexibility to the very last moment, in case they are unhappy with the applicant pool or, who knows, someone really brilliant comes along in another field. Second, even though the committee is made up "primarily of ancient Judaism scholars," that does not have to mean that  "they are evidently looking for someone who can augment their rabbinics/biblical studies" - and even if so, it is not official. Who knows, perhaps the money comes from a source for all fields of Jewish Studies, so they cannot limit the scope of its application officially. Sometimes the members of the committee are on it by chance - other people are busy. Nevertheless, in practice, such composition of the committee tends to lean towards their own fields.
• I think i understand quite well why, in theory, a search committee who really wants an ancient Judaism scholar would cast a far wider net.  But I think that, more often than not, search committees know very well what they are looking for in a cadidate and simply (for whatever reasons) don't include that information in the job description.  In the case of this particular postdoc, the head of the search committee admitted openly that they were looking someone who specialize in rabbinics/Bible. When I wrote that "evidently" they are looking for someone who specializes in the ancient period, I meant that it they have literally admitted that this is what they are looking for.  Again, I understand that committees may want to be open to some "brilliant" scholar from another discipline, but I don't think this is actually the case very often.  It is, in my opinion, more likely that the academic job market neither cares about nor values transparency, for whatever bizarre reasons.  Anyway, good luck, ancient Judaism peeps!!
• The simplest solution is to write in the job add "preference is given to.. although other fields will be considered." Or simply require just a CV and a project proposal from people in other fields, which can serve as ground for consideration. But, true, they don't really care. (x2)

New York University - Schusterman-Taub Postdoctoral Fellow (Israel Studies)

The Taub Center for Israel Studies at New York University seeks to appoint two Postdoctoral Fellows in Israel Studies for a one-year term beginning in September, 2014. Candidates may work on any aspect of Israel Studies, including topics related to history, politics, sociology and culture of Israel. Fellows are expected to teach one undergraduate course during their time at NYU. PhD must be in hand by September 1, 2014 with no exceptions, and may not have been received before September 2010. A Fellowship of $42,000 will be awarded to the successful candidate, with additional research funds allocated at the discretion of the Taub Center. Fellows hold appointments in the Skirball Department of Hebrew and Judaic Studies and work closely with colleagues in their disciplinary specialization if appropriate.

Fluency in both Hebrew and English is required.

Old Dominion University (VA) - Jewish History and Culture – Visiting Faculty Position (1 yr).

The Judaic Studies Program housed in the department of History within the Division of Arts and Humanities at UC San Diego is committed to academic excellence and diversity within the faculty, staff, and student body. The successful candidate will teach two courses, one to be a survey of Modern Hebrew Literature in translation, the other in an area of Judaic Studies of their choice. University of Toronto - Postdoctoral Fellowships in Jewish Studies

The Centre for Jewish Studies at the University of Toronto offers three Postdoctoral Fellowships to support advanced research in Jewish Studies. Applicants must have completed their doctoral dissertations by July 1, 2014 on a topic related to the history, culture, literature or thought of the Jewish people. The successful candidate will receive a fellowship of $45,000 (CAD) as well as up to an additional $1500 to support participation in academic conferences. The Fellows will spend the 2014-15 academic year at the University of Toronto, during which time they are expected to continue their research; deliver a public lecture; teach one course in each of the two terms; and contribute to the intellectual life of the Centre for Jewish Studies. Applicants from foreign as well as Canadian universities are welcome.

Virginia Tech - Visiting Assistant Professor of Judaic Studies (3yr)

The Department of Humanities, Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies invites applications from qualified candidates for two (2) one-year Sessional Assistant Professor positions in Humanities. The positions will contribute to the Department’s Religious Studies offerings. For one of these appointments, preference will be given to candidates with scholarly training in classical Judaica (biblical and/or rabbinic and/or medieval) and the successful candidate will have knowledge of Hebrew and may be asked to teach one course in Hebrew language or literature in York’s Department of Languages, Literatures and Linguistics.
