---What do we have here??? a Visiting Assistant Professor position but at the rank of a Lecturer, This is a position for somebody with a PhD, but with a salary for somebody with a M.A. This is both ridicolous and unfair (but with a job market such as ours...desperation makes this right?) What do you all think? Che ne pensate?

- Doesn't seem a big deal at all: I've always understood the difference between VAP and Lecturer to be one of semantics. I wouldn't have expected a VAP with a PhD to be paid any more than a Lecturer with a PhD.

-- No, not really, at least not according to my personal experience. Of course things vary a lot depeding on the specific contract that one gets, but I've generally seen VAPs get a better stipend and a better teaching load than Lecturers, even when both hold a PhD. Again, I'm not stating any universal rule here, but reporting first-hand knowledge.

-- I'd second the OP and the last poster. I also thought there was some tension between the "lecturer" rank and the "VAP" title. I don't know about stipends (those are likely to be lower whatever non-TT position you hold) but I've definitely seen the "P" in VAP matter in terms of teaching load and levels of courses taught, other departmental service responsibilties, and the general level of responsibility and respect a person is accorded around the department.

- (Original responder) It's interesting to see the variety in personal experience. My own remarks come from knowledge of a large state university where a VAP and a lecturer, both with PhDs, were paid the same. The VAP had a 3/3 load and minimal service responsabilities; the lecturer had a 3/2 load and extensive departmental and college-wide responsabilities ...with commensurate respect. I guess these experiences all feed into the general difficulty we find in establishing what is 'normal' for our field?

• Is anyone whose formal training IS in Italian literature, and not Mediterranean Studies (whatever that is), history, anthropology, etc. applying to this one? I wish they wouldn't put "preferably" before the main specialism because it sounds like it might be an open search but that rarely proves to be the case (cf. Stanford last year.)
• Yes, I am. My formal training is in Italian literature and not Mediterranean...but, it is worth the try, I think.
• Ditto - you have to throw your hat in the ring with these types of posts, at worst you don't hear back from them.
• OP here. I get where you're both coming from: unsent applications have a 100% rejection rate. But my experience is that job ads usually mean what they say -- my applications get serious consideration when the person specified has a CV like mine and nowhere when they ask for something else. (Cue venting about exceptions to this rule but, in my experience, they are prominent because of, not despite, their rarity.) So what frustrated me here was the obscurity introduced by that word "preferably" before the only specialism suggested. Any thoughts as to *why* they might go against that preference and hire an Italian lit. specialist instead?
• Well, there's no harm in keeping one's options open.  Say a standard Italian literature specialist publishes a book that changes the face of Italian Studies as we know it.  Columbia would be foolish to close off its options by saying that they wouldn't even consider such a candidate.

-Thank you for that...and I would like just to post a little comment because one of their candidates is a tenure faculty from a very prestigious university...Is this fair???? in this type of job market to be looking for a tenure-track job when you already have one? I do not mean to be polemic and I am sure that there could be good reasons for somebody to be looking for another job if they do not like where they currently are...but considering the high number of junior faculy (untenured and in visting positions) who have been on the job market for a few years now and they should be the next in line....but they are competing with candidates like that? This only makes the situation worst for all of us out there who are not in tenure-track positions and are looking to find one....and stick with it!!!! Li mortacci!!!

-The job market is awful. There are so many amazing candidates who are not getting jobs. That is not the fault of someone who is in a tenure track (not tenured, not definite!) position. Who knows what is going on his life or at his work (or where he is in the tenure process). Comments like the ones above are part of why many places keep their information private. So many places have hired former graduate students, inside candidates, people with lots of experience, etc. in the past view years. OSU has been very open and professional about their process. Let's support transparency. It seems unfair to voice problems with one individual whose name is revealed because of an open process, when the problem is the state of the field and the state of the humanities. Does anyone know what is happening with all the jobs that have not been as forthcoming? 

-Ok you have a good point there, and I do appreciate the transparency, but maybe it's better not to know...at this point...anybody got any blue pills for sale?

-It's unfortunately common practice to apply for Assistant Prof. jobs the year one goes up for tenure in order to increase the leverage on your home institution should you land an alternative offer. I believe that is what has happened here. But OSU assumedly knows that too. Maybe he is indeed a ringer: one of the other candidates has a Masters from OSU.

- I sent mine out in mid November and was contacted on Dec 15 for the inteview. I guess that when you only look at a letter and a cv, and basically it's a one-woman committee, then decisions are made pretty quickly.

  • Interesting, it must have happened late because my rejection letter stated that the position had been filled.....why wouldn't they have moved to the next candidate down the list?
  • Well, as long as I know, in a national search you're not supposed to move to the next candidate down the list. If things are done by the book, when the candidate to whom the position is offered decides not to accept it, a new national search should be conducted. I've also been told that this is done in order to guarantee the candidates' negotiating power -- otherwise, universities could simply refuse any negotiations and move down the list until they find someone willing to accept the initial offer.

In today's market when there are over a hundred well-qualified candidates applying for every full-time job, wouldn't it be foolish for universities to start again if the top candidate, who presumably finished a hair above the second-best (and still in all likelihood fabulous) candidate, chose to turn them down?
  • I agree with the previous comment; I've never heard of anything like that. I've served on search committees, and I can assure you that we would have moved to the fourth and fifth candidates on our list and done another round of campus visits rather than risk losing the position the next year (relunctantly, yes, but we would have done it).
  • Agreed, all the search committees I have sat on required us to invite three candidates who we were comfortable offering the job. That's why you invite more than just one candidate to campus - so that the first and second alternates have gone through the same steps and processes as the "top" candidate.

We are seeking an innovative and productive scholar whose major field of research is Italian Cinema and Modern Literature (19th and 20th centuries). A proven record of publications in the field of Italian Cinema Studies is essential. The successful candidate will be expected to teach courses at both graduate and undergraduate levels in the above mentioned areas as well as language courses. An active research interest in 19th-century Italian literature would be regarded as a special asset. Demonstrated excellence in teaching and research are required.

A completed PhD is required. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

• Is it just me or is this announcement simply ridiculous? Scholarship in medieval AND 19th AND 20th century literature and culture... plus an interdisciplinary approach?? I pity the students and the young new hires being asked to do the work of (at least) two!
• This is a replacement hire for a medievalist who also taught modern literature. There are few and far between of people with that sort of range, though, so I would imagine Yale would choose another medievalist over a modernist.

Does anybody know how many candidates (approximately) have been interviewed by each university at MLA? How did the interviews go?

• It's usually 10-15.

• Che io sappia, only OSU (TT medieval), Yale, and Dartmouth have made invitations (as of 12/11). Minnesota, Colby, and OSU (VAP 20th/21st C.) said they definitely would interview at the MLA in their ads. Tufts, Penn, Brynn Mawr, Elon said they would definitely skype. (OSU VAP will do both MLA and skype.) The others, who knows? But pazienza: it's still early. I've seen MLA invitations being issued the week of Christmas and I've heard of them going out even the week after that.

  • Pretty darn? If you take a peek at their Christian mission statement, you'll notice that it's not only pointing at (fundamentalist) religious belief but right-wing political ideas as well. If that's your cup of tea best of luck to you!

• What a dreadful year for jobs unless you're a dantista! -- It must be all the older profs retiring, where most of them were dantisti.
  • It seems to go in waves: Last year and, even more so, the year before that were pretty bad years if you were a medievalist. Next year there will probably be mainly modern jobs. (If we weren't all humanists someone might be able to give you the statistical likelihood for that.) [Nate Silver, where art thou??]
  • Maybe it's all a question of perspective. Last year seemed like a great year for early modern/medieval, but that's coming from a modernist who had all of 3 tenure track jobs to apply for... This year actually seems somewhat less awful than last year all around. And there will certainly be a new crop of jobs (mostly vaps) coming in the spring. So hang in there...!

  • I noticed the number of medieval jobs too, but even for dantisti, it's no fun when you're passed over for interviews and you have no idea why. It's the "black box" nature of the process--plus the fact that half the institutions (in my experience) never send even a thanks-but-no-thanks email--that makes this so maddening. I appreciate the knowledge that everyone shares here.
• Did any other Italianists apply for the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, Assistant Professor position in Mediterranean Studies? It is listed under the French and Francophone Studies wiki, with just one comment that skype interviews were scheduled in early December.
  • I applied for an almost identical position they advertised last year, attempting to spin my Italian studies background as Mediterranean. Didn't get anywhere so I didn't apply to the one this year. I don't actually know if anyone was hired last time; the job wasn't on the 2011-12 wikis for Italian, Spanish, or French.
