The School of Critical and Creative Studies (SCCS) at the Alberta College of Art and Design (Calgary/CAN) invites applications for a permanent faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor or Associate Professor, in Visual Culture and Theory. 

Applicants should be able to speak to a diverse range of practices and contexts, particularly in areas of feminist theory, queer theory, and/or diaspora studies, and situate them within the Canadian context. The successful candidate will be well versed in the most advanced theoretical and methodological concerns of the discipline, and be able to speak to Indigenous perspectives.

All qualified candidates must have a PhD (or have successfully defended their dissertation by the position start date) in art history or a related discipline. They are expected to provide strong evidence of active and excellent research and to demonstrate a record of, or high potential for, teaching excellence at the undergraduate level. The successful candidate will be required to teach a diversity of courses across all levels of undergraduate study as well as within the graduate program, and will be expected to maintain an active program of research, publication, teaching, and service.

The School of Critical and Creative Studies (SCCS) provides non-studio academic courses at ACAD. Courses taught in the SCCS place an emphasis on critical discourse and methods that support students engaging with the practice of interpretation in a contemporary context. SCCS curriculum helps students situate their professional practice critically and ethically. SCCS offers an integrated series of courses that create direct links with studio practice. Designed to support studio-based education in fine arts, crafts, media technologies and design, SCCS curriculum is organized across five areas: Visual Arts History and Theory, Critical and Creative Studies, English, Social Sciences, and Professionally related courses. Click here to learn more about SCCS

The Liberal Studies Program is housed in the Department of Human Development & Women’s Studies. The Department of Human Development & Women's Studies promotes the interdisciplinary study of human development over the life course. The faculty currently include scholars from anthropology, sociology, human development, biology, linguistics, psychology, and other disciplines that make a contribution to the study of human development. The Department offers courses that introduce a wide range of theories, perspectives, and research methods. The Department provides its courses through on-campus face-to-face instruction, and through online and hybrid instruction, including a growing number of fully online courses. The Department serves over 500 Human Development majors per year, plus another 400 Liberal Studies majors for their core and teacher preparation requirements, and students from other majors who are completing their general education requirements. DUTIES OF THE POSITION: Typically, the successful candidate will teach the two Liberal Studies courses (LBST 201 Introduction to Liberal Studies and LBST 499 Liberal Studies Senior Seminar) fully online each semester, and courses in the candidate’s discipline specialty area that fit the needs of the curriculum of the Liberal Studies Program and the Human Development and Women’s Studies Department, as well as courses required by the Program and the Department. In collaboration with other faculty members, s/he will work to strengthen and develop new courses for the Program and the Department. The successful candidate will be a member of the regular faculty of the Human Development & Women's Studies Department. All faculty are expected to make appropriate use of up-to-date instructional technology, including online instruction and digitally recorded instructional materials. Please note that teaching assignments at California State University, East Bay include courses at the Hayward, Concord, and Online campuses. In addition to teaching, all faculty are required to do student advising, assist the department with administrative and committee work, and assume campus-wide committee responsibilities. In order to fulfill these duties, the successful candidate is expected to physically come to campus at least twice a week.

RANK AND SALARY: Assistant Professor. Salary is dependent upon educational preparation and experience. Subject to budgetary authorization.

QUALIFICATIONS: Ph.D. or earned equivalent at the time of appointment is required, in broad social science and/or humanities areas including, though not limited to, anthropology, ethnic studies, geography and environmental studies, English, history, human development, international studies, political science, psychology, sociology, women’s studies, art history, philosophy, religious studies, and any relevant interdisciplinary studies areas. Preference will be given to the candidate with a record of accomplishment, including published scholarship, teaching experience, and administrative skills including a vision for sustaining, leading and developing the Liberal Studies Program for both liberal arts education and multiple subject matter oriented teacher preparation. Applicants with expertise in areas that will strengthen or closely complement the academic areas of the existing faculty in the Human Development and Women’s Studies Department are welcome. Georgetown University (DC) - TT Asst. Prof. in the Culture and Politics Program - Human Rights / Humanitarianism[]

The Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University invites applications for a new tenure-track position at the rank of assistant professor with a focus on culture and politics. The position will start in Fall 2019. We seek candidates with research expertise in human rights and/or humanitarianism who have a demonstrated interdisciplinary background in cultural/social theory as it relates to global politics. Regional specialization and disciplinary field are open, but an international component is required. We encourage candidates who draw from multiple disciplinary and methodological approaches.

Applicants should have exceptional scholarly promise and substantial research accomplishments. The appointment is attached to the Culture and Politics (CULP) undergraduate major within the School of Foreign Service (SFS). CULP is a large interdisciplinary undergraduate program that emphasizes critical social inquiry within a transnational/global context, interrelating questions of power structures and identity.  

The search committee will evaluate applicant teaching records and potential for excellence both in the classroom and in the related areas of course design, curricular development, and student mentoring. Preference will be given to applicants with teaching experience who have completed their Ph.D. The teaching load is two courses per semester, which includes the CULP major’s undergraduate Gateway course “Theorizing Culture and Politics.” The SFS offers a rigorous four-year undergraduate program in international studies, as well as several master’s degrees in area studies, security studies, global human development, and international affairs. Opportunities for interdisciplinary dialogue on human rights and humanitarianism span the university and bridge scholarly and practitioner arenas, such as the Institute for the Study of International Migration, Global Human Development Program, SFS area studies programs, and Institute for Racial Justice.

Kettering University, a national leader in experiential STEM and business education, is seeking a talented individual to serve as the Head of the Department of Liberal Studies. The Head of the Department of Liberal Studies will work with the Dean of the College of Sciences and Liberal Arts, departmental colleagues, and faculty and administrative colleagues across the University to enhance an already essential part of a Kettering education: the integration of the humanities, social sciences, and arts into its programs in STEM and management.

She or he will administer day-to-day operations, organize and conduct department meetings, oversee department committees, and prepare reports for the College.

The Lewis Honors College at the University of Kentucky is currently seeking a Lecturer or Senior Lecturer for a nine-month appointment, non-tenure track position. This position will be responsible for teaching six courses per academic year (typically three per semester) of Honors-level courses at the undergraduate level. One course (two sections per semester) will be the Foundations Seminar and one course per semester will be an Honors course in the Lecturer's discipline.

The Foundations Seminar will be taken by all Lewis Honors College students and will be an intensive, interdisciplinary seminar that will emphasize the development of analytical reading, writing, and speaking skills through the lens of examining the relationship of the individual to society. In the last three years, Wake Forest has been awarded two major grants from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation to support public humanities and the engaged Liberal Arts, and we seek candidates whose experiences and professional training are well-suited for working with local area communities on topics possibly including race, labor, housing and gentrification, food justice, community leadership and empowerment, and poverty and health. We also welcome candidates committed to engaged scholarship and pedagogy in public humanities, digital humanities, and environmental humanities. The final candidate is expected to create a hub of collaboration across disciplines and communities and to be a key participant in our engaged humanities initiatives, including international conferences and forums.

Applicants must have a strong interdisciplinary background in one or more Humanities fields, including History, Literary Criticism, Cultural Studies, and Ethnic Studies. Possible areas of expertise include, but are not limited to, cultural anthropology, American studies, foreign area studies, social history, ecocriticism, urban studies, human geography, and comparative literature. A demonstrated commitment to community-engaged teaching, research, and publication is highly desirable, as is the ability to enrich the College curriculum with courses exploring themes and issues of class, race, gender, citizenship, human justice, the environment, nationality, and identity.
