Revision as of 23:37, 22 February 2021

This page is for postdoctoral positions that begin in 2020-2021.

Last year's page: Humanities and Social Sciences Postdocs 2019-2020

To keep this page consistent and easy to read, please adhere to the following guidelines:

  • Please place new fellowship entries in alphabetical order. Note that "University of X" should be alphabetized by U as first sort, and X as second sort within the U listings.
  • Please mark the title of the fellowship using the H3 header.
  • Please include the deadline and a web link to the ad/website; PLEASE follow the format of other entries.
  • When adding a deadline, please also add this to the Upcoming Deadlines section.
  • For logging comments or updates, please begin your entry with a bullet point. Each entry should have a separate line.
  • For substantive comments or updates about status, interaction, etc., please include the date at the beginning of your entry so that users can scan the info quickly for new entries.
  • Please contribute to transparency in the academy by adding yourself and your advisors to the Academic Tree project.

(12/16) Any others interested in removing the full job descriptions from this page - just including title, deadlines, links, and comments/update? This page is unnavigable. >> Please, do it! This page is so confusing! (12/16) >> Just saw this (12/30). Personally I wish that the full information had stayed on this page--sometimes web pages crash, and generally it's helpful to keep a record of what information these fellowships are requesting

I know this isn't a discussion board but I think this site should come with a disclaimer for the sake of our collective mental health: This wiki is so often a place of heartache, frustration, and disappointment. You are not your rejections. Do not blame yourself for the deteriorating conditions of the academic job market or the deep structural failures embedded within academia. You are enough. You matter as a person. Your survival and your joy are bigger than any fellowship or academic position.

Center for Italian Modern Art (USA:NY) - Summer/Fall 2021 Fellowships - Deadline: February 1, 2020

Each year the Center for Italian Modern Art (CIMA) awards multiple CIMA Fellowships to support research and study of Italian modern and contemporary art for doctoral and post-doctoral scholars. Citizens of all nationalities are eligible. CIMA offers a unique experience to its fellows: the annual exhibition serves as a hub for scholars from diverse academic backgrounds to share research derived from the artworks on view with each other and the public. Emphasis is split between individualized study—gaining an intimate knowledge of artists represented through close looking and through researching in depth a topic raised by the installation—and public discourse, as represented by collaboration on public programming and leading interactive exhibition tours. During their residency, fellows also have the opportunity to pursue their own research and connect with scholars and other professionals in and around New York.

Summer-Fall 2021 Fellowships

The exhibition for CIMA’s next season focuses on the early body of work created by the painter Mario Schifano (1934–1998) between 1960 and 1965. Originally planned for October 2020-June 2021, the exhibition has been rescheduled to January-November 2021 in order to maintain the necessary safety and weather the logistical disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. As institutions worldwide are cancelling fellowship opportunities, CIMA is reaffirming the vital importance of new scholarship through the expansion of its fellowship program.

  • 12/17: Email: asking to confirm my availability; would be in contact after Jan 1
  • 12/22: 2nd poster here. Did anyone else got a similar email: asking to confirm availability/interest + notifications will be sent after Jan 1st? I'm wondering if I am reading too much into the wording of the email. -I got the exact same email, it didn't seem like there was any action we needed to take, right?
  • Any news for this position?
  • Same person who received + posted about 12/17 email = I haven't heard a thing and have been refreshing my inbox more times per day than I would like to admit. Was it just myself and other 12/17 poster who got that email from the dept? Any others?

I want to think that they are delayed due to covid, but we probably would have heard something by now. Has anyone tried contacting them?
  • Got interviewed on 12/09. They finalized the interview schedule by contacting shortlisted candidates right before thanksgiving. Good luck to those on the short list. Commiserations to those who couldn't make it.
  • Acceptance offer received (12/18)

Updates:

  • 11/2 - Anybody gotten first round rejections yet?
  • 11/2- Not yet, last year they came late November iirc.
  • 11/19 - Posting here since I don't see a separate listing for the Dartmouth Leslie Center for the Humanities postdoc, but received an email rejection for that today. (x4)
  • 11/23 - Rejection email received. "Given the number of applicants, we can offer less than one percent a fellowship." x11
  • Huge fan of the five rejection emails received in a row, too. Really hammered home the absurdity of it all for me. lol! (<-- seriously... message received...) [glad to hear I wasn't the only one who got that bug. I jokingly thought they really hated my application] --- That bug was R2 energy.
  • ---Hey! So, listen, for what it's worth, even though I'm sure you know this already, these things are total lotteries and really not meritocratic; it's all about who's on the committee in a given year and if they're interested in what you do. Example: I was a finalist for Princeton Society of Fellows in 2018, and the way they do things is the Society of Fellows committee cuts the pool down to about 600 and sends those applications to faculty readers. The faculty readers pick 1-2 of their favorites and those people get shortlisted. If the people reading my year hadn't been interested in my work (and it seemed to me to be very coincidental that they were!), I'd never have been shortlisted. For the fellowship I have now, I got it largely because there happened to be an opening in my field because someone got a job and left the program. Total lottery! Keep at it, keep your head up, it'll be alright. :-)
  • 12/1--Any updates from people who did not receive rejection email? Have not received a call or any other emails, either. x5 [The next round probably won’t happen until January.]
  • - 12/15 I was told that there's currently a list of 37 (out of 1100 applicants) and that they're still receiving input in order to decide on interviews. Offers will be made in mid- to late-January. RESPONSE: Is this to say that if a rejection email was not received, one can assume they are in that list of 37<--Yeah, I think it's safe to assume so. That was the case for me. I only reached out recently since I was given another postdoc offer and wanted an update, upon which they confirmed my inclusion in the 37. -01/07/21 - Any further update?
  • 1/11 - Writing sample request; interviews to be held over the next several weeks. <-- Odd question, but when/what time was the email sent? [3:22 PM EST today, asking us to submit a writing sample by this Friday]
  • 1/11 - If writing samples were requested, I assume those of us who have not been contacted, have not been selected. I am also guessing we will be held in there so that they have more options in case candidates end up rejecting offers? < I wouldn't necessarily assume so. Judging from past threads for this postdoc, writing samples are not usually requested, so they might be using it for additional decision making. To those who received writing sample requests, what was the wording (in a nutshell)? < The email stated that I was on a list for potential interviewees and that a writing sample was requested to help with the process. They also mentioned the interviews would take place over the next few weeks.
  • -12/10 - Responding to the brief mention of the Leslie Center for the Humanities Postdoc above. Has anyone heard anything after the first round of rejections? It's been crickets over here... 12/18 Crickets here too. 1/11 - still nothing here, anyone heard back about the Leslie postdoc? 1/14 Nothing here
  • -1/13 Any of the list-of-37 people hear anything yet? 1/13 Nothing yet x2 1/13 Judging from the above, interview invitations will probably go out next week? 1/13 Email them today to ask status of my application (I had not received any email from them), they quickly responded that they have a list they are still narrowing and that unfortunately, I am not in that list. I do believe only those who were requested writing samples are. 1/14 sent them an email regarding my candidacy, but only received an automated email.
  • Writing sample requests: x1 << did you just receive that request yesterday or last Friday? <--Is this the same person who mentioned writing samples earlier?
  • 1/15 - Rejection email received x4
  • 1/15 - Zoom interview request (to be conducted 1/23-1/24) <—— Is this for the Leslie Center or The Society of Fellows Postdoc? <--SoF, not Leslie.
  • 1/25 - Has anyone else still not heard anything one way or the other? << Re SOF they told interviewees offers would be out this week. Has anyone gotten a call yet? <<- Not yet (1/26)
  • 1/27 - Anyone hear back from the Leslie Center? <<- 1/28 No, I even emailed them a few days ago to ask but didn't get a response <<- For what it's worth, I received a rejection email from the Leslie Center way back in December or January (sorry, I can't find the email now so can't specify exact date).
  • 1/27 - Has anyone got a call as of Wednesday?<-- I haven't heard anything, and actually reached out yesterday but no response as of yet. I'm not very hopeful at this point...
  • 1/27 - 5 offers went out on Monday and they have until Feb. 4th to accept, so still a chance that others will still hear in the next week. <-- I'm assuming this is SOF? <---do you know how many candidates were interviewed? at this point I'm just curious about the ratio <-- Yep SOF, and not exactly sure. 19 slots were presented, so I'd guess somewhere between 10-15 interviews.
  • 2/4 - Is anyone still waiting on a status report from the Leslie Center? I'm wondering how many folks are still under consideration at this point or if I'm just in limbo and others have heard positive news. <---I have not heard anything from them.

2/5: - Leslie center gave respective departments their top few picks for the depts to interview; today was the last interview day. Next week, they'll gather the reports and choose their final cohort. Hoping we'll hear from them next next week at the latest.

2/8 - Received Leslie center rejection (x2)

pThis fellowship is open to scholars in any field in the arts, humanities or social sciences whose research engages race, ethnicity, class, gender, sexuality or transnational studies.

  • 1/7/21 Has anyone heard anything yet?
  • Nothing yet on my end. Anyone else? (x5) (Jan. 16)
  • Nothing over here, but in the past years the results came two months after the application deadline.
  • Update email sent out on 1/25 (x7) - "Dear Applicant, Thank you for submitting your letter of application for the Chau Mellon position at Pomona College. We received an unusually large number of applications this recruiting cycle—several hundred more than last year. As such, our review process has been slower than expected. We sincerely apologize for the delay. You can anticipate a follow-up message later this week notifying you of the status of your application."
    • Did everyone receive this email who applied? 1/25
    • In answer to the above comment, yes? I think that that is a safe assumption since the message wasn't a rejection. They appear to be giving folks a heads-up that the responses are coming. I bet they were getting messages asking where they were in their evaluation process. I'd be interested to hear if there were any folks who didn't get the message.
  • Later this week, eh? 1/30
    • seriously! did anyone hear yet?
    • lol nothing over here
    • Nada? Nothing? Really? :(
  • Why send us an email with a timeline to hear back if they weren't going to stick to it? It would have been better to just say nothing...
  • I completely agree with you. And I really don't know why if they can't stick to it.
  • 2/1 any possibility of limiting the kvetching here to ensure readability? Completely empathize and am in the same spot but real updates are more helpful.
  • 2/1 rejection (x5) -- I thought the rejection was really nice!

That was fast (considering we had until the 4th to revise the applications)! Was this for the postdoc or the visiting position?

Out of curiosity, did you submit your application near the deadline or earlier? I can't believe they would have enough time to read through the applications, let alone organize and distribute them to the committee (1/8)

I submitted it on Dec 29th, so not too early. Not sure how they managed to do this either!

Hmmm, any development on this? Nothing here.

ABOUT THE DIGITAL CIVIL SOCIETY LAB

The Stanford Digital Civil Society Lab seeks to understand, inform, protect and promote civil society in a digitally dependent world. Our goal is to foster a thriving and independent digital civil society rooted in a democratic commitment to freedom of association and assembly, freedom of speech and privacy. Our approach is interdisciplinary and cross-sectoral:

  • We conduct and catalyze research across disciplines,
  • We develop learning opportunities for civil society and philanthropic organizations,
  • We support an emerging generation of community advocates, technologists and policymakers through teaching and fellowships,
  • We promote efforts to better integrate civil society and digital policy advocacy.

The Digital Civil Society Lab is investigating key research themes that include:

·      The key dimensions of digital infrastructure and data and how they influence the role of civil society in democracies;

·      The challenges and opportunities for assembly and association in a world of pervasive data-collecting, digital infrastructure;

·      The possibilities for decolonizing technology and developing alternative political economies around digital connectivity

ABOUT THE PROGRAM ON DEMOCRACY AND THE INTERNET

The Program on Democracy and the Internet (PDI) envisions digital technologies supporting rather than subverting democracy by maximizing the benefits and minimizing the threats through changes in policy, technology, and social and ethical technological norms.

Digital technologies are having a profound impact on democracy in the United States and around the world. New communication platforms that give voice to the previously unheard also empower nefarious actors who seek to undermine democracy, silence journalists and minority groups, manipulate search engines, sow distrust, and more. Concerns about virality, deception, anonymity, echo chambers, and platform information monopolies pose new challenges for democracy in the digital age. Current research to understand these challenges and, on the basis of theory and evidence, craft solutions, remains nascent, fragmented, and incomplete. A strong knowledge base is critical for policy makers, corporate leaders, and technologists to make decisions that protect and promote democracy in the digital age.

The Program on Democracy and the Internet is investigating key research themes which include:

·      Reform options for platforms to combat hate speech, bots, and disinformation.

·      Algorithmic bias

·      Deteriorating health of digital information ecosystems and its effect on democracy and civil rights

·      Changes in the media landscape due to shifts caused by digital innovation.

·      Impact of the internet on election campaigns and voting.

·      The Program on Democracy and the Internet’s work draws from the social sciences, humanities, engineering, computer science, and the law to understand the challenges digital technologies pose to liberal democracies around the world.

The program is led by Principal Investigators Nathaniel Persily, James B. McClatchy Professor of Law at Stanford Law School and Co-Director of the Cyber Policy Center, Francis Fukuyama, Senior Fellow at the Freeman Spogli Institute, and PACS Faculty Co-Director and Professor of Political Science, Rob Reich.

  • 11/29 - any response yet?
  • I'd be surprised to hear anything before February
  • nothing yet (1/12)
  • 1/25 - spoke with the admin, they had ~600 applicants, folks will be notified in March << Thanks for finding out! Is that when final decisions will be made, or when shortlisting will begin? Based on previous years they seem to reach out by February after first-round cuts.
  • What does the second round mean? An interview/additional documents?
    • It seems from previous years that second round just means your file is advanced to the final round for final review and selection. So no interviews/more materials.
    • Thanks!
  • Selected as a finalist (Field: Comparative Literature). 568 applications, 11 finalists << Congrats! Was it by email or phone call? <--Email (Field: Religious Studies) --> E-mail as well. It said 11 finalists have been selected already and only 4 will be offered fellowships + a short waiting list from the finalist pool.
  • 2/3 - anyone else heard yet? Figuring on assuming rejection if we haven't been contacted as a finalist by now << I agree, it seems that both CompLit and Religious Studies have been selected.
  • 2/3 Selected as finalist (Field: French & Italian). Email. Best of luck to everyone!
  • Congrats to the finalists! It's faire to assume that we're going to receive a rejection letter soon if we didn't hear from Stanford yet.

UC Santa Cruz (USA:CA) Primate Ecology and Molecular Anthropology (PEMA) Lab Postdoctoral Researcher - Deadline 1 March 2021

The Primate Ecology and Molecular Anthropology (PEMA) Lab (https://www.pema-lab.com/) in the Anthropology Department (https://anthro.ucsc.edu/index.html) of the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for a postdoctoral researcher position dedicated to the development of a strontium isotope (87Sr/86Sr) map of equatorial Africa under the direction of Dr. Vicky M. Oelze. The PEMA lab is specialized in the behavioral and stable isotope ecology of living primates, particularly African great apes, and well as the use of a variety of stable isotope systems (87Sr/86Sr, δ34S, δ18O, δ15N, δ13C, δ66Zn, δ56Fe, δ65Cu) in archaeological science.

The postdoctoral researcher will analyze ~500 environmental samples (snail shell, plants, soil) from more than 40 field sites and nationwide surveys in equatorial Africa to develop the first 87Sr/86Sr isoscape map for this region, which will provide a foundation for future investigations of historic human displacement from and within Africa during the transatlantic slave trade. This new isoscape ranging from West to East Africa, with a strong representation of geological units in the West and Central African coast, will also be relevant for wildlife forensics as isotopes are increasingly used in identifying hotspots of poaching and wildlife trafficking. This project has the potential to have significant impact on the archaeology of Africa and the transatlantic slave trade, as well as for wildlife conservation.

Besides experience with 87Sr/86Sr analysis involving the operation of a TIMS or ICPMS, the ideal candidate should be fluent in the programing language R, have substantial experience with mapping large datasets (GIS) and a record of scientific publications. Applicants with experience in developing large-scale isoscapes are particularly qualified for this position. Candidates with a strong research emphasis on mobility in past African societies and/or forced migration during the transatlantic slave trade are strongly encouraged to apply, even if they may not have a substantial track record in isotope analysis, but feel confident in data analysis and mapping. The successful candidate is expected to actively engage with international colleagues working on the archeology of slavery and to engage in public outreach on behalf of the project.

Updates:

  • Website says "Finalists will be notified and awards announced no sooner than March 31st each year"
  • Yes, although based on the previous years, the finalist ended up knowing in the first two weeks of February and the alternate/Chancellor much later.
    • Applied x6
    • There is also a separate post specifically for the University of Michigan President's Postdoc.
    • 2/6 - I saw a post on twitter suggesting only 30 finalist and announcement will be out soon. Good luck everyone.
    • 2/6 Tweet by Tanya Golash-Boza said 1,183 applicants and "about thirty" awards will be announced!
    • 2/8 Thanks! Any finalist received a phone call/email?
    • 2/8 heard a friend received a phone call as a finalist.
    • 2/9 Lucky friend! I'd be curious to know if they also email...I'm abroad and my phone doesn't work..although I'm probably keeping a sliver of hope for nothing!
    • 2/9 someone posted on Twitter that they got the call today
    • 2/10 it looks like the lucky friend on twitter got into UCSB. anyone heard from other campuses? any UCLA news?
    • 2/10 friend was offered a position at UCLA via email. Any updates on Berkeley? << I applied at Berkeley as well. I emailed them, I didn't get it and she said the official results will be in March. << 2/11 So hang on, they're telling all these people they got it, and those people are announcing it on Twitter, etc, but those 1,000+ of us who didn't get it have to wait until March to get a rejection, assuming we are not alternates? Or are you saying you can email the postdoc and ask about your application status? Hella confusing.
    • 2/12 to clarify for the above poster, based on previous years, finalists are notified first. Rejections are sent out about a week later. If you’re still in the running as an alternate or for a chancellor’s, you won’t hear anything until late March. But yes, if you email them, the office will usually give you an update about the status of your application.
    • 2/16 Missed a phone call from a 510 area code # I didn't recognize last Monday (2/8), followed by an e-mail from the Assistant Director of the UC PPFP requesting that I call her back asap. Called the following morning and was notified I had been offered a postdoc for 2021-22!
    • 2/17 Congrats to all the winners! I'm not sure about other people's experience but I asked the fellowship office for an update (for ppfp/chancellor's) last week. Even though we all know winners are being notified already, I still received a standard reply today saying that "Finalists will be notified and awards announced no sooner than March 31st each year." Hope others have better news! Good luck to those still in the pool!
    • 2/17: I received a similar email today in response to my inquiry, which read in part: "Successful candidates are notified first. Alternates are notified if awardees do not accept or if current fellows do not renew their terms. Additional fellowships may be awarded to candidates on the alternate list as late as June, if resources become available." Has anyone receive a rejection?
      • 2/17: Yes, I sent an inquiry email just received a response today with a rejection. "Unfortunately, we are unable to offer you a fellowship this year... Official notification will go out by March 31st." So maybe it's good news for you if they're vague? << I second this. I received the same rejection email. It's better if they're vague but after being an alternate the first time and being kept on hold for many months the second time, I'm afraid they keep a large pool of alternates who do not receive the fellowship. Sorry for being a joykiller (or hope killer I should say).
      • Oh, I'm sorry! But thanks for sharing this - that's what I was wondering, whether they're sending this message to everyone or just those who are still in the running.
    • 2/19 - rejection e-mail received x5
    • 2/19 - I have still heard nothing x6. <<It seems like rejections are being sent by discipline or campus. The email I received with 'no news' (before the rejection a couple of days later) said that math notifications went out in January.
    • 2/20 - Wondering if anyone has heard anything about UCSD? 2/20 - I also applied UCSD (History mentor) and have not heard.
    • I was rejected from UCSD on 2/19 via email (Anthropology)
    • Has anyone heard from Berkeley? It is 2/20, and I have not heard anything (mass rejection e-mails sent 2/19, sorry y'all, hope other good opportunities come your way).
    • 2/20: Anyone heard from Davis? << I applied to Davis (NAS) and received a rejection 2/19.
      • Hi there - my friend who is a biologist tweeted that he got a PPFP offer from Davis. Tweet was on 2/19.
    • 2/20: So it seems safe to assume that the first-choice President's Postdocs have been notified and given a deadline (anyone know what that is?); a large cut has been made (2/19); and those who have not heard back are in the nebulous space somewhere between Chancellor's and alternate (with no sense of where one falls in that hierarchy) and won't be notified for several more weeks? Does that seem right? << Yes, except it could be even longer than weeks. Sometimes funding opens up when existing postdocs choose not to renew for the second year (if they accept a permanent position, for example). So some alternates might receive offers months from now.

It is not a requirement that the candidate’s doctoral studies, or the work that they submit in support of their application, should have concerned late Roman or early Medieval Britain, but candidates will be expected to show in their applications how their proposed project relates to existing studies of the period and current research in bioarchaeology. The successful candidate will be expected to engage broadly with the whole college community and to organise academic activities in the form of seminars/workshops/conferences (for which the College is able to provide modest funding).

Updates:

  • Request for additional materials. 11/19 (Humanities) x8.
  • It seems like the requests went out early this year... I wonder if they are sending requests out based on track. Do you mind me asking to which track those who received a request applied to teach?
  • I applied for the Human Being & Citizen and the Readings in World Literatures tracks. I got notified of the request for additional materials on 11/19.
  • I applied for Human Being and Citizen and Philosophical Perspectives. I also was notified on 11/19 even though I originally posted it here on 11/20.
  • Thanks. Good luck with the next round!
  • [11/30] Late response, but mine was Greece and Rome and Human Being & Citizen.
  • I also received a request for additional materials on 11/19. Applied for Greece and Rome and Readings in World Literature. Good luck, all!
  • Does anyone have info on how many Humanities positions are open this year? Last year I know they didn't make any Humanities offers.
  • If they didn't make any Humanities offers last year (why would they do that?), then perhaps they are only taking Humanities this year and no Social Science. Has anyone in a social science track heard anything?
    • From what I understand, last year no Humanities post-docs left Chicago, so no new positions were available. Also, the two searches (Hum and Social Sciences) are usually on different timelines.
    • 12/6 ^^^ this is good to know, thank you! I applied in Social Sciences (History of European Civilizations, Classics of Social and Political Thought) and haven't seen/heard anything anywhere yet, plus the official timeline they gave was 'additional materials requested in December' so I'm still hoping...
    • 12/21 - I don't really understand how no one can leave, can someone explain this? These are not indefinite positions, so unless they are on a cycle of not hiring anyone new every four years, mustn't there always be a small cohort for whom this is their fourth and final year as a Fellow?
    • 12/21-This is only conjecture, but Chicago has a number of faculty (and maybe even UC grad students) that also teach in the core program. There may be one fellow in a particular area but 5 faculty at Chicago who are employed to teach those same classes, so even if a fellow leaves they may not need another fellow in that area (especially if undergrad demand decreases, if enrollment is uncertain, or if they want to add more sections in other areas).
  • 12/8 Request for additional materials (Philosophical Perspectives on the Humanities) x 1
    • To the person above, did you receive the email request on 12/8? I'm wondering if this was part of a newer batch of requests...
    • It was a newer batch.
  • 12/14 Anyone heard anything from the Social Sciences tracks?
  • Has anyone gotten a request for Media Aesthetics?
    • Nope, I've been waiting on/hoping for Media Aesthetics, too. They seem to have many graduate students and departmental postdocs available to teach this sequence though, so I'm not getting my hopes up they'll hire any fellows...
  • 12/16 How about "Reading Cultures"? Anyone hear anything?
    • 12/16 Yes, I applied to Reading Cultures and received a request for additional materials last week (12/8).
  • Is is a stupid question to wonder why they take applications for positions that do not exist? I understand there's a prestige factor in being able to say something like "we only accepted 2% of applicants," but surely that can't be the only reason...
    • Adding to the selectivity prestige of "we only accepted 2% of applicants," it is also a way for UChicago to advertise its program to the 1000+ first-round letter of reference writers (last year there were 300+ applicants) who had to learn about the program first before writing. Good advertising among a prestigious in-group! However, requiring 3 first-round letters during this difficult year seems mean, especially given that some sequences won't even have positions open up...
    • Not a stupid question, but an immensely frustrating issue to be sure. If they advertised in tracks they're not planning to pursue it's grossly unprofessional of them, prestige or no prestige.
    • Additionally, some of these sequences are much less popular than others; Human Being & Citizen and Philosophical Perspectives are really popular. Language & the Human and Poetry & the Human are less so. This might affect hiring, as might availability of grads/postdocs in departments to take on this teaching.
    • Also frustrating that they require a teaching statement "describing your methods and goals in teaching a text in a general education course." This writing isn't really usable for other applications. Do they really need it to make the first cut?
    • FYI for future applicants to this position: I just submitted the same teaching statement I use for all of my applications, and I still received a request for additional materials. My statement is not oriented to one text but uses several different textual examples to demonstrate my approach.
    • You didn't answer the prompt for the teaching statement? I am impressed by this bold move.
    • I applied to a track that accepted no one last year, and if luck has it, I'll have applied to a different track that also accepts no one this year.
  • Did anyone apply to "Media Aesthetics"? I noticed that no one currently in the fellowship is even currently listed in that track so you'd think they would want to fill something! (12/16) [See above for discussion re: Media Aesthetics; no one has reported hearing back]
  • 12/16 has anyone heard from "poetry & the human"?
    • Yes (12/8)
  • 12/17: What about Power, Identity, Resistance or Self, Culture, Society?
    • 12/17 Doesn't sound like anyone from Social Sciences has heard anything yet
    • I wonder at what point it becomes safe to assume they aren't hiring anyone in social science...
    • In years past, Social Sciences have heard in January.
  • 12/30: Any update re: Social Sciences?
    • I haven't heard anything (1/4)
    • Nothing here either (1/8)
    • Wonder if they're not doing Social Sciecnes this year after no Humanities last year? But if that's the case, why not just say so and save us all the application effort??
    • Just IMO, I suspect "preventing others from doing unnecessary work" isn't a principle that guides much of anything in academia. We actually seem to value the opposite.
    • 1/8 - Anyone tenacious enough to reach out and inquire?
    • 1/8: I asked (Social Sci.). Will update if they reply...
    • 1/8: Chicago's winter quarter hasn't started yet, so that may be why updates haven't been sent.
    • 1/8 Request for additional materials
      • Can I ask for more details on this? Which track did you hear from? // Adding on: was it via email and personalized? Thanks!
      • Social sciences, Classics of Social and Political Thought, generic-ish email from the school.
    • 1/8: Is it safe to assume that no contact = rejection? And does anyone know how many fellowships were available for the Social Sciences?
      • I don't think that no contact necessarily means rejection at this point. I can't speak for Social Sciences, specifically, but for Humanities, it looks like requests for additional materials were not sent out all at once. Also, as others have said, the Winter quarter for U of Chicago hasn't started yet, which may be causing some delays. In terms of the number of fellowships available, that's anyone's guess at this point.
      • 1/14: For Social Sciences it doesn't seem like all requests have gone out yet (unless there are only positions for CSPT). For Humanities if you didn't receive a request for additional materials already, based on the posts above it's unlikely, but not impossible, that you're still in the running.
  • 1/11: Anyone have info on whether HUM interview notifications will go out this week?
  • 1/14: May I ask those who have received requests for additional materials what those materials were? (Slightly ridiculous anxiety behind this question - I have a full teaching portfolio and provided a link to it in my application, so I'm holding out meager hope that the lack of a request comes down to that.)
    • I was asked for a writing sample and teaching materials (syllabi, evals, etc). I applied for HBC (Humanities).
  • 1/15: Request for additional materials (writing sample, syllabus, evaluations), 6:57 pm EST, form email from the Society's program coordinator. I applied in History of European Civilizations and Classics of Social and Political Thought. x 2 for History of European Civilizations and Self, Culture and Society

So... three months just to be asked for additional materials. In complete seriousness, I wonder why. < Because academia is a culture of cruelty.

01/22: Anyone who applied for Human Being & Citizen, have you heard any news on interviews? When they requested supplemental materials on November 19, 2020, they mentioned that they would let us know mid-January for an interview in late January or early Februrary. 01/22 I'm on the same boat. Just reread the email and in mine (also from 11/19) it said selected candidates would be contacted mid to late Jan so still hoping for an interview. Good luck!

1/22: Anything at all for Global Society? Crickets here.

1/24: Interview Request (Human Being & Citizen).

  • Did you get the email today (Sunday, 1/24) or sometime during the week?
  • I'm wondering the same thing. Have all HUM interview notifications gone out or are they rolling out today?

1/23: Interview request (Humanities; Greece & Rome and Human Being $ Citizen)

1/24: Former Harper-Schmidt fellow here, I thought I could pay forward some information by answering some of the questions above. Do the same if you get hired! First, further requests can be extremely slow because they involve getting the heads of the various Cores to sit down and agree on candidates, then get agreement from the heads of the College. They also get deluged with applications, and to my knowledge do go through every one, so it takes time. Humanities is usually much quicker to turn things around than Social Sciences, and no news in the latter does not necessarily mean bad news, even if you're hearing about hires in the former (I don't want to get anyone's hopes up, though). Are there always positions available in every Core? No. But if they like your file they will consider you for other courses on your ranked list, so if your first choice isn't hiring and they think you'd be a good fit for another then you're not immediately rejected (I certainly wondered about this). It does seem absurd (and cruel) to allow applications to teach Cores that don't have open spots. The reason (from their perspective) is that current Fellows are often searching for TT jobs during the same cycle, and fairly often leave (before their time, at short notice) at the end of any given academic year. If that happens then they already have an applicant pool from which to fill the position. Let's be honest though: it's a buyer's market and if it were otherwise it seems fair to say that there would be strong pressure to come up with a better or at least more transparent system. It's not even liked internally because the search committee has to trawl through hundreds of applications that might be moot. In other words, the explanation is probably found at the level of labor continuity rather than prestige pumping, etc. It's not undergraduate admissions. Be warned that no matter how long the delay in reply things usually move quite fast once you do hear back (Can't say how the pandemic will affect interview timing this cycle). Finally, a couple of years ago UChicago changed the funding structure of their grad programs, with effects for the number of grad students available to teach. I'm not in the loop enough to know if that meant there was a glut or dearth of grad students who wanted or needed to teach in the Core, but the current and past couple of cycles are either relatively lucky or relatively unlucky in terms of the number of applicants they might want to hire. Wish I could say which, but I won't speculate and it's probably possible to find this out. Best of luck to all, it's a good gig if you can get it. [NB—Based on comments below I want to clarify that I am *not* involved in the search committee or administration for this position, so please treat the above as *anything but* authoritative or official. I am not speaking for the administration or the Society in any capacity. My goal was to try to answer a few questions posed above, not least because I wondered about them myself when applying and would have appreciated the insight. I honestly sympathize with the frustration over the requirements but doubt they will change anytime soon. Either way, the chances of anyone with that kind of institutional authority seeing this are low to nil, so I doubt treating this as the cahiers de doléances will have much effect. I may be wrong about this (and much else) but I at least don't enjoy that authority. Good luck to all.]

  • Thank you! Very helpful.
  • Am I right in assuming that since Human Being and Citizen was the first to send out requests for additional materials, Philosophical Perspectives interview requests will come later? Has anyone received a PP interview request?
    • Not me. I listed both HBC and PP. Received earlier request for additional materials but no interview yet. Hopefully more interviews will roll out soon.
  • If anyone who is part of the Harper-Schmidt search committees or administration is reading this: if you know you routinely receive a significant number of applications for positions you do not fill, stop requesting the teaching statement in the first round of applications. Consider requesting it in a later round instead. It is a document that is time-consuming to create (and for the search committee, an additional document to read) and is so custom tailored to the position that it cannot be submitted anywhere else. +1

I don't see these comments as similar to the French revolution, and I didn't read anyone as expecting the process to mimic undergraduate admissions. (I just assumed people are comparing the process to other similar teaching scholars programs, which is a fair comparison) However, having read the insights into the process, it actually does sound a lot like undergraduate admissions, which is helpful to know. Some people are early decision, another group follows, and the rest are rolling admissions until the what sounds like it could be the very last moment. That's certainly not the only way to do things, and I agree with all the other people suggesting this process is a little meaner than average for various reasons (including the requirement of a personalized teaching statement). Unfortunately, it's not too far above average, but meaner none the same.

[Response: Of course, I don't disagree. Having been in your same position I hoped to share unvarnished information about the process as I knew it (recently but not currently), itself part of a bigger, structural collapse of the academic job market. I did that because I wish I'd had these things clarified when I was going through the process and think it helps equalize the playing field for those without the insider networks. But this appears to have been misread as an official comment tinged by nastiness, or endorsement of the current process, or as an invitation to argue about how the system works, none of which is true. I could have given advice on a different application system, perhaps a better one, but would that help? This seems pointless for all but: (1) Cahiers de doléances was not to liken this to the French Revolution, which would be absurd, although no doubt big changes to academia are needed and they're not coming from on high. It meant that listing complaints here in the hope that the relevant higher powers would read and them and then change the admissions process seems quixotic. Nobody was petitioning for changes before that post, suggesting I had been mistaken for someone in a position to make the system better, which is untrue. (2) "It's not undergraduate admissions" was meant in the limited context that they do not publish acceptance rates and have no incentive to artificially boost applications just to massage those rates - - a common practice among colleges. Someone had asked why they let you apply to tracks that might not have open slots - -"Is is a stupid question to wonder why they take applications for positions that do not exist? I understand there's a prestige factor in being able to say something like "we only accepted 2% of applicants," but surely that can't be the only reason..." (see above). I'm saying that the best explanation for this quirk is in terms of labor: Fellows are often on the market in the same cycle and leave before their years are up; having an applicant pool means continuity of teaching staff without waiting a year to fill a position that becomes vacant between October and the end of the year. You might disagree with that analysis but it helps explain some of the otherwise bizarre features (or injustices) of the process without reducing them to caprice, sadism, or prestige. In any case, I thought would be useful to hear from someone who has been in your shoes and gone through this particular application system and then seen it for four years from the inside, but apparently I'm not helping. I'll delete the original post to avoid confusion. Good luck and let future applicants know your experiences and insights if you make it.]

-Response to response: I'm not OP, but I just wanted to say that your original post was indeed very helpful, as was your response. The real problem, we should all recognize, is a problem of labor. I encourage you to keep your original post up in the hopes that others now or in the future will find it useful. Thank you for taking the time to share your experience.

I said the thing about undergraduate admissions, but added the phrase "which is helpful to know" to clarify that multiple people are appreciative of the information received.

--Anyone know if more Humanities interviews will be going out? I only see two HBC interviews for all of the Humanities. Email for additional materials said mid to late Jan.

  • It seems plausible that they will, but I have no idea. I was thinking of sending them an email on Friday (provided there are no updates).
  • I have emailed twice, called almost every day last week: no one responded to my emails, no one picked up the phone. If you have a different experience, please share (and lucky you!).

-- Response to email about application status 02/03/21: "We received a record number of applications for a limited number of positions.  The search is on going, though they have begun to interview for some of the positions."

So... it's an adjunct pool. It's not a postdoc or a fellowship and it's not like undergraduate admissions either. They collect applications for positions that may or may not exist, and will contact you if/when a need arises. The positions pay really (really) well if you get one, but it's a lecturer spot dolled out on a rolling and as-needed basis. AKA... an adjunct pool. Personally, I would have loved to have this info just for some context, but hopefully the next cycle can benefit! I am also certainly going to stop using terms like "collegiate assistant professor" or "Harper fellow" to describe an adjunct pool. That's just silly :)

Not exactly, it's a fixed term postdoc fellowship with a set teaching requirement. It's not a lecturer spot (which also exist at UChicago and are subject to periodic renewal), and it's not doled out on a rolling basis (there is a single cycle of applications once a year and a stable number of fellows in total, but the precise number and disciplinary focus of spots in any one cycle fluctuates as people leave). It's a non-renewable four year contract that includes benefits (pension, healthcare, etc), sabbatical, research budget, publishing grant, full faculty status, and even (a new development) union membership. The best general comparison might be the lower rung of a tenure-track position but without the chance to move up the ladder, but really it's just a different kind of position, albeit not totally unique. Compare with the Society of Fellows at Princeton, Michigan, Columbia and USC, some on this board, and you will notice a set of structural similarities (UChicago SoF has a heavier teaching load than its peers but better benefits and the fellowship is longer by 1-2 years; Princeton pays more but the cost of living there is much higher. Harvard Society of Fellows is exceptional in that Fellows don't teach, but this is not the rule and hardly means they are the only ones worthy of the name). Universities rely on lots of kinds of teaching labor, from full professors to undergraduate peer tutors and everything in between, each with its relative pros and cons to employer and employee alike. To assume that "academic labor" means adjuncts and only adjuncts would be to misunderstand this particular position while mystifying other kinds of university teaching work.

Any news on Media Aesthetics? Request for additional materials? Interviews? Even, I dare say, the boot? Crickets be chirpin' here.

-Nothing here. It seems there's been no movement since the HBC interviews reported above. Either no one is reporting here, or they're taking it slow.

Is it safe to assume that if we haven't been contacted for an interview yet that we're no longer in the running (specifically for those of us who received additional materials requests for HUM)?

  • 2/20 - as stressful as this is, I wouldn't say so; see the various notes above about how slow the consensus process is among the committees, plus the application website lists the interview/campus visit stage as taking place "February-April."
  • 2/22 - campus visits for humanities sequences have already happened.
  • 2/22 - to the above poster, for which humanities sequences? All of them? No one has posted anything about the Philosophical Perspectives track.
  • 2/22 - I wonder if the above post is from the University... If they are correct, it could be that the society only ended up being able to hire for HBC. It could also simply be that no one who advanced in the other tracks was a poster on this board...
  • 2/22 - Agree with poster directly above that we should take the post about visits being over seriously. There was a slow-down of interview updates on this page after HBC interviews, and it's unlikely that there are many people leaving Chicago in HUM for TT jobs this year. Although I was asked for additional materials, I'm marking this one as a rejection.
  • I'm the first 2/22 poster: apologies for not being specific enough. I was interviewed for HBC/Greece and Rome sequence and I got the feeling those two were the only open positions this year, but of course I might be wrong. In any case, campus visits for those tracks were supposed to be over on 2/19, so as you can imagine I'm now being busy dying of anxiety.
  • 2/22 - Thanks for the added info and good luck! I do wonder if anyone from the second round of materials requests ended up being interviewed...
  • 2/22 Offer made (HBC); not the one who received the offer, but I heard one was made.
  • Congrats! How exciting!

2/22 - I applied in the Social Sciences and hadn't heard anything at all, so I emailed last week to inquire if my application was still under active consideration. Just received a response: "At this time, the search is on going so I don't have an update right now."

  • 12/14 - emailed them a few days ago and was told that letters were being sent out in the next few weeks
  • 12/26 - rejection by letter mail. Happy Holidays! (x6) --- quick question: Was the mail sent to your home or university department? --(12/28) delivered to home address
  • 1/4 - Why can't they join the 21st century and just email rejections? << Agree.... I live in an area whose mail has been totally torpedoed in recent months, and knowing this is being sent via USPS and will arrive god knows when adds a whole new layer to the anxiety :-|
  • Rejected via email (1/4) after I asked for application status. < -- so frustrating that you had to reach out!!!
  • 1/5 - Also rejected via email after reaching out. I'm on the east cost but never received a letter. (x4)
  • 1/5 - e-mailed this afternoon and was told my application is still under consideration. The final round of reviews will happen at the end of the month.
  • 1/8 - finally got rejection letter (dated 12/21) by mail (i live on West coast) (x2) <--me too, rejected in a letter postmarked 12/18 received 1/14 on the east coast. (x3) Insane that it took this long for the letter to reach me.<-- also weird us east coasters are all getting the letters on the same day
  • 1/19: any update? It seems that the university sent out some rejection letters, but is there anyone who has received an offer so far? <-- you can e-mail and ask the status of your application
  • 1/22 - anyone hear anything?
  • 1/22 - Received offer via phone call <-- did they give you a deadline to decide? thanks! <-- Feb 5
  • 1/26 Any rejection emails this week? <-- emailed them yesterday, received a response today (1/26) indicating that "the society continues to evaluate finalists".X2
  • Any idea how many finalists there are, and how many offers have been extended? Looking forward to this waiting to be over.<--200-300 semi-finalists, 35-40 finalists, 5-10 winners, between 800 and 1000 submissions.
  • 2/8 I have not received anything in the mail or email. Are they still reviewing applications?
  • 2/13 Haven't received anything, either. I assume they've send out first offers and waiting on acceptances?

Updates:

  • Any updates??? (1/4)
    • Nothing over here (1/4) x3
    • 01/11–Notification of department nomination (English and Comparative Literature). On to the central committee. / Congratulations! (1/12)/ Thanks!
    • 01/12--I've heard nothing. Applied for English so ...yeah... / Do they always notify nominated candidates? (1/12) /
      • I have no idea. But since the other poster stated s/he/they were notified, I figured that the ENGL Dept is notifying this year at least. Based on my understanding of the info on the UNC-CH site, they only take about 5 ppl. for the entire uni. so I doubt ENGL gets more than 1 person. But I'm totally guessing and also being pessimistic. (1/12) / Yes, the email I received supports that view.
    • 1/14--Any one heard back from other departments?
    • 1/15--I haven't heard anything, I applied to gender studies and polisci
    • 1/15--Nothing over here either, I applied in anthropology
    • 1/15--I got an email from the department chair (Linguistics) for a short interview.
      • 2/3 -- Just received notification of department nomination. Now waiting on university committee's decision./ Congrats! (02/5) / Thank you!!
    • 1/18–For those of you who haven't heard about department nominations, central committee decisions won't be announced until February 26 (at the earliest) so you still have plenty of time to secure a nomination
    • 1/31 - Anyone applied to History and heard back?
    • 2/1 - Anyone who applied to Romance Languages (Brazilian and/or Lusophone African Studies) and heard back?
    • 2/8 - It looks like not every department informs their top candidate that they are being forwarded to the central committee. I just read on a previous year's page that a candidate learned they were nominated by the department only via the rejection letter.
    • 02/11–Received email confirming department nomination. The email also included the following information: "Selected scholars for the program will be notified with a follow-up e-mail by the end of February.  All scholars will receive notification regardless of the results by March 1, 2021." x3
    • 2/21-- Somebody announced on Twitter (2/19) that they received an offer. Do they email all of the selected scholars at the same time?
      • No idea. I was nominated by a department but haven't been contacted about final decisions. x3

University of Oxford (UK:Eng) - Postdoctoral Researcher on the 'Emptiness' Project (2 posts) - Deadline: 23 Sept. 2020

We are seeking up to two postdoctoral researchers for the European Research Council project "Emptiness: Living Capitalism and Democracy After (Post)Socialism." The project will study the emptying cities, towns, and villages in Eastern Europe and Russia through the lens of "emptiness" as a concrete historical formation that has emerged in conditions when socialist modernity is gone and promises of capitalist modernity have failed. More specifically, it will: (1) study the experiences and narratives of emptiness and emptying; (2) examine the politics and governance of emptying and emptiness; and (3) use postsocialist "emptying" and "emptiness" as lenses for analysing global reconfigurations of relations between capital, the state, people, and place at a time when capital flows and statecraft are increasingly concentrated in "global cities," with the rest of urban and non-urban spaces becoming radically disconnected.

anyone heard from them yet? (1/4)

  • Website says first screening doesn't even take place until end of February. <-- actually, it says early February.
  • Why do they have November deadlines and don't start review for almost 3 months later?
  • They say they will finish the first screening by early February. I'm guessing it probably takes 3 months to read close to 1,000 applications...
  • I can't wait to hear news from this! (1/27)
  • 1/29 - email notification of selection as semifinalist. (x3) They had 1187 applications.
  • 1/29 - email rejection x3
  • 2/1 - email rejection
  • To the above poster, was this rejection received this morning? Can I ask what discipline?
    • Yes, received this morning (Comparative Lit was my first choice). The email seems to have been originally sent yesterday but it bounced back to them and they resent this morning.
  • Odd - I haven't received anything. Anyone else not received a notice either way yet? (X1, 1/3)
    • I haven't received anything ether. To the semifinalist, was your email from the department (or faculty) who nominated you or from the society in general? For those who were rejected was it a generic rejection or individualized? ---> semifinalist email was also generic.
      • it was a generic rejection.
      • The email notifying selection as semifinalist was also very generic. It didn't even have my name on it. It said "We received a staggering total of 1187 applications this year and only 7% were selected as semifinalists." ... "The review of semifinalists takes place in the first half of February. Applicants will be notified of whether they have been selected as finalists or not by February 22nd. Offers will be communicated on the first week of March. Finalists who were not selected for the fellowship will receive an email notification once all positions have been accepted, which is normally by late March."
    • I have not heard anything either but based on the number above, one's chance of getting a rejection is 99.7%!!!! This job market is a fucking nightmare.
    • Agree with the person above. Got my rejection today. You can't fight those statistical probabilities.
    • I have to say, this is a bit perplexing! Did anyone else receive a semifinalist email yesterday? Perhaps they just haven't sent them all out yet (likely wishful thinking).
    • Perhaps they're sending notifications department by department? I'm assuming each department submits their rankings to the society and then the society notifies.

^W/R/T this point; most likely since some departments most likely submitted the candidate they would support and others probably had the deadline on Friday. Generally if acceptances and rejections are going out and you haven't received anything, most likely by end of next week since your department/school is just behind. Alas, like most Society of Fellows, it's not really about the research but your pedigree (most winners are from Ivy League or top tier private schools and their research is more philosophical (looking at last year winners) than community, political, or socially based; so don't take it personally when one gets rejected!

  • I haven't heard anything yet. No rejection, no semifinalist email. Are there others that haven't gotten anything? (Feb. 9)
      • I haven't received an email either (re: rejection/semifinalist) (1/3)
      • I haven't gotten any e-mail updates either as of 2/15. My discipline is history.
  • 2/16 Was notified I was a semifinalist on 1/29 like others stated above, but no further updates beyond that (though the e-mail does say "Applicants will be notified of whether they have been selected as finalists or not by February 22nd"). I do not have an "Ivy League" pedigree by any means, so I imagine it's still quite unlikely I will be selected as a finalist. My discipline is Communication.
  • 2/19 was notified of status as a finalist via email. Only 2% of 1187 applicants were selected. Final decisions will be made next week with offers out the first week of March.
    • 2/21 Thanks to whoever posted the above, I was a semi-finalist and it's so helpful to know that finalist emails seem to have gone out!!! <--Of course! I can't understand for the life of me why we all don't properly update one another. Everyone of us is checking this thing constantly, and if the institutions don't have the sense to update applicants, we have to at least look out for our own. Sorry for the bad news, but I'm sure something good will come of it all soon, so stay positive!
  • 2/22 Official rejection received. Best of luck to the finalists! E-mail language for reference: "Thank you for applying for the postdoctoral position with the USC Society of Fellows in the Humanities, and congratulations once more on your selection as a semifinalist. We regret to inform you that your application did not advance to the final round of review. We received a staggering total of 1187 applications this year and, unfortunately, only have five fellowships to award. We appreciate the time and effort it takes to apply. There was great interest in your file, and the merit of your scholarship and promise you hold as a scholar are clear to the reviewers. We truly regret that we are unable to offer positions to all deserving applicants. We wish you the very best."

University of Southern California (USA:CA) - Postdoctoral Fellowship in the Humanities and Academic Administration - Deadline: 29 January 2021

The USC Mellon Humanities and the University of the Future Program seeks applications for two-year Postdoctoral Research Fellowships from scholars whose research is in any area of the humanities or humanistic social sciences and who have interest in academic administration. The annual salary will be $75,000, plus benefits and a yearly $2000 research/travel allowance. To apply for the 2021–2023 cohort, candidates must have completed all requirements for their doctoral degree after June 30, 2016 and before July 1, 2021. The Program seeks to address the need for more humanities or humanistic social science scholars in academic administration by opening potential new career paths. Each postdoctoral fellow will spend one semester working closely with a divisional dean; another with either the college dean of undergraduate education or the college dean of graduate education; a third in either the media office, the Academy in the Public Square, or the office of Advancement; and a fourth semester free of any responsibilities to enable fellows the chance to work full-time on revising and publishing their research. Fellows will attend meetings and contribute to policy decisions, working as liaisons between dean-level offices and faculty members, meeting with potential donors and program officers from foundations, and advancing the mission of USC Dornsife. During the time of the fellowship, a divisional dean will serve as a mentor and provide assistance for the fellows’ research and writing, including support for grant applications, review of book proposals, draft articles, or chapters of works-in-progress. Our goal is to provide mentoring so that the shift to greater administrative responsibilities does not come at the expense of research productivity. Applicants’ research must be based in the humanities or humanistic social sciences. We welcome proposals from applicants with interdisciplinary and cross-disciplinary projects. Proposals may focus on any period and geographic region. Applicants will be evaluated based on their academic accomplishments, the significance and intellectual merit of their research project, and their potential to contribute to the goals of USC Dornsife. To apply, submit all materials via our application portal. The application deadline is Friday, January 29, 2021. Applicants must complete the application form, provide names and email addresses of two recommenders, and upload separate pdf files of the following documents: Cover letter / Research statement (not exceeding 3 pages); Writing sample; CV. Our application portal is unable to accept documents submitted by Interfolio or similar dossier services.

Updates:

  • Applied: 7x
  • Based on previous years we should hear something last week of January.
  • Has anyone heard anything?
  • Nothing 1/28
  • Also nothing 1/28 - I have never gotten an interview or advanced on a postdoc app, but that does not keep me from obsessively checking this thread at least 3 times a day. Best wishes to everyone!!! <-- This resonates. (x3) yikes I definitely check more than 3 times a day ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
  • Oh, give it another year and you'll be, like the rest of us, empty enough inside to check only once a day.
  • 1/31 - Anyone heard back?
  • Feb. 1, haven't heard anything (x4)
  • 2/3 Rejection email (x5). According to the rejection email, this was the largest applicant pool in this program's history: 633 applicants.

2/3 4:45 pm - gah has anyone NOT heard anything? Did next round notices go out/is that even a thing?

  • Previous years indicate that rejections go out over two or three days. We're not in the clear yet. We won't know if we made the cut until we get a rejection now, a rejection in two or so weeks, or a request for interview around that time, I believe.

Right, we're not in the clear yet. Any one of us could be next. Don't check your email or make any loud noises. Situation precarious.

Lol. So confirming that we will not be updated on status for 2 weeks one way or ther other? ugh

2/3 Notification that application is "still under consideration" (x4). [They also included a bit of a timeline: "We’ll reduce the short list we now have to a shorter list of candidates whom we will hope to interview at the end of February by Zoom. We’d like to complete the selection process by mid-March."]

Anyone else still not receive either email? Schrödinger's postdoc... )x6!!! <-- Curious if anybody in this category has reached out to them? If we are not still being considered, why not send out the rejections at the same time? <-- Rejection on Feb 5. Guessing this is the second round of emails.

  • I'm in this category and I reached out. Will update if/when they respond
  • 2/5: Rejection x2

2/14 Anyone else still in a Schrödinger's postdoc position?
