The Center for Humanistic Inquiry (CHI) at Amherst College seeks scholars from across the disciplines for full-time, two-year appointments as CHI Fellows and visiting lecturers.  In colloquy with one another and the Amherst community, CHI Fellows will explore the theme “Black: Here and Now.” We invite applications from scholars whose research or creative work takes up some aspect of our theme (described in more detail below).

Each year the Center for Italian Modern Art (CIMA) awards multiple CIMA Fellowships to support research and study of Italian modern and contemporary art for doctoral and post-doctoral scholars. Citizens of all nationalities are eligible. • Huge fan of the five rejection emails received in a row, too. Really hammered home the absurdity of it all for me. lol! (<-- seriously... message received...) [glad to hear I wasn't the only one who got that bug. I jokingly thought they really hated my application] --- That bug was R2 energy.
• ---Hey! So, listen, for what it's worth, even though I'm sure you know this already, these things are total lotteries and really not meritocratic; it's all about who's on the committee in a given year and if they're interested in what you do. Example: I was a finalist for Princeton Society of Fellows in 2018, and the way they do things is the Society of Fellows committee cuts the pool down to about 600 and sends those applications to faculty readers. The faculty readers pick 1-2 of their favorites and those people get shortlisted. If the people reading my year hadn't been interested in my work (and it seemed to me to be very coincidental that they were!), I'd never have been shortlisted. For the fellowship I have now, I got it largely because there happened to be an opening in my field because someone got a job and left the program. Total lottery! Keep at it, keep your head up, it'll be alright. :-)
• 12/1--Any updates from people who did not receive rejection email? Have not received a call or any other emails, either. x5 [The next round probably won’t happen until January.]
• - 12/15 I was told that there's currently a list of 37 (out of 1100 applicants) and that they're still receiving input in order to decide on interviews. Offers will be made in mid- to late-January. Harvard University (USA:MA) - Fairbank Center for Chinese Studies Hou Family Fellowship in Taiwan Studies - Deadline: 1 Mar. 2021

The Fairbank Center for Chinese Studies at Harvard University is pleased to announce the 2021-22 competition for the Hou Family Fellowship in Taiwan Studies. The fellow is expected to be in residence at Harvard for at least one semester (five months), between August 1, 2021 and July 31, 2022. A longer period of residence up to the full year is encouraged.

Applications are welcome from recent Ph.D.s in a relevant discipline of the humanities or social sciences focusing on Taiwan. Please note that the Fairbank Center is only accepting applications from North America-based scholars; a separate search committee in Taiwan will review local applications.

A strong working knowledge of English and Chinese and/or Taiwanese is required.

Applicants with Ph.D.s may not be more than 5 years beyond its receipt at the start of the fellowship. Harvard University doctoral degree candidates and recipients are not eligible for this fellowship.

The Digital Civil Society Lab and the Program on Democracy and the Internet at Stanford PACS bring promising new scholars to Stanford University for 1 year appointments (renewable once, for total of two years) as postdoctoral fellows.

The following information applies to applications for the 2021-22 cohort of postdoctoral fellows. Applications for the PDI fellowship are due on February 1, 2021. Applications for the DCSL fellowship are due on February 15, 2021.

The annual fellowship stipend is $67,000, plus the standard benefits that postdoctoral fellows at Stanford University receive, including health insurance and travel funds. The fellowship program falls under U.S. Immigration J-1 Exchange Visitor Visa activities.

The Program on Democracy and the Internet (PDI) envisions digital technologies supporting rather than subverting democracy by maximizing the benefits and minimizing the threats through changes in policy, technology, and social and ethical technological norms.

Digital technologies are having a profound impact on democracy in the United States and around the world. New communication platforms that give voice to the previously unheard also empower nefarious actors who seek to undermine democracy, silence journalists and minority groups, manipulate search engines, sow distrust, and more. Concerns about virality, deception, anonymity, echo chambers, and platform information monopolies pose new challenges for democracy in the digital age. Current research to understand these challenges and, on the basis of theory and evidence, craft solutions, remains nascent, fragmented, and incomplete. A strong knowledge base is critical for policy makers, corporate leaders, and technologists to make decisions that protect and promote democracy in the digital age.

The Program on Democracy and the Internet is investigating key research themes which include:

·      Deteriorating health of digital information ecosystems and its effect on democracy and civil rights

The Primate Ecology and Molecular Anthropology (PEMA) Lab (https://www.pema-lab.com/) in the Anthropology Department (https://anthro.ucsc.edu/index.html) of the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for a postdoctoral researcher position dedicated to the development of a strontium isotope (87Sr/86Sr) map of equatorial Africa under the direction of Dr. Vicky M. Oelze. The PEMA lab is specialized in the behavioral and stable isotope ecology of living primates, particularly African great apes, and well as the use of a variety of stable isotope systems (87Sr/86Sr, δ34S, δ18O, δ15N, δ13C, δ66Zn, δ56Fe, δ65Cu) in archaeological science.

The postdoctoral researcher will analyze ~500 environmental samples (snail shell, plants, soil) from more than 40 field sites and nationwide surveys in equatorial Africa to develop the first 87Sr/86Sr isoscape map for this region, which will provide a foundation for future investigations of historic human displacement from and within Africa during the transatlantic slave trade. This new isoscape ranging from West to East Africa, with a strong representation of geological units in the West and Central African coast, will also be relevant for wildlife forensics as isotopes are increasingly used in identifying hotspots of poaching and wildlife trafficking. This project has the potential to have significant impact on the archaeology of Africa and the transatlantic slave trade, as well as for wildlife conservation.

Besides experience with 87Sr/86Sr analysis involving the operation of a TIMS or ICPMS, the ideal candidate should be fluent in the programing language R, have substantial experience with mapping large datasets (GIS) and a record of scientific publications. Applicants with experience in developing large-scale isoscapes are particularly qualified for this position. Candidates with a strong research emphasis on mobility in past African societies and/or forced migration during the transatlantic slave trade are strongly encouraged to apply, even if they may not have a substantial track record in isotope analysis, but feel confident in data analysis and mapping. The successful candidate is expected to actively engage with international colleagues working on the archeology of slavery and to engage in public outreach on behalf of the project.

• Is is a stupid question to wonder why they take applications for positions that do not exist? I understand there's a prestige factor in being able to say something like "we only accepted 2% of applicants," but surely that can't be the only reason...
  • Adding to the selectivity prestige of "we only accepted 2% of applicants," it is also a way for UChicago to advertise its program to the 1000+ first-round letter of reference writers (last year there were 300+ applicants) who had to learn about the program first before writing. Good advertising among a prestigious in-group! However, requiring 3 first-round letters during this difficult year seems mean, especially given that some sequences won't even have positions open up...
  • Not a stupid question, but an immensely frustrating issue to be sure. If they advertised in tracks they're not planning to pursue it's grossly unprofessional of them, prestige or no prestige.
  • Additionally, some of these sequences are much less popular than others; Human Being & Citizen and Philosophical Perspectives are really popular. Language & the Human and Poetry & the Human are less so. This might affect hiring, as might availability of grads/postdocs in departments to take on this teaching.
  • Also frustrating that they require a teaching statement "describing your methods and goals in teaching a text in a general education course." This writing isn't really usable for other applications. Do they really need it to make the first cut?
  • FYI for future applicants to this position: I just submitted the same teaching statement I use for all of my applications, and I still received a request for additional materials. My statement is not oriented to one text but uses several different textual examples to demonstrate my approach.

    • I don't think that no contact necessarily means rejection at this point. I can't speak for Social Sciences, specifically, but for Humanities, it looks like requests for additional materials were not sent out all at once. Also, as others have said, the Winter quarter for U of Chicago hasn't started yet, which may be causing some delays. In terms of the number of fellowships available, that's anyone's guess at this point.
    • 1/14: For Social Sciences it doesn't seem like all requests have gone out yet (unless there are only positions for CSPT). For Humanities if you didn't receive a request for additional materials already, based on the posts above it's unlikely, but not impossible, that you're still in the running.

1/23: Interview request (Humanities; Greece & Rome and Human Being $ Citizen)

1/24: Former Harper-Schmidt fellow here, I thought I could pay forward some information by answering some of the questions above. Do the same if you get hired! First, further requests can be extremely slow because they involve getting the heads of the various Cores to sit down and agree on candidates, then get agreement from the heads of the College. They also get deluged with applications, and to my knowledge do go through every one, so it takes time. Humanities is usually much quicker to turn things around than Social Sciences, and no news in the latter does not necessarily mean bad news, even if you're hearing about hires in the former (I don't want to get anyone's hopes up, though). Are there always positions available in every Core? No. But if they like your file they will consider you for other courses on your ranked list, so if your first choice isn't hiring and they think you'd be a good fit for another then you're not immediately rejected (I certainly wondered about this). It does seem absurd (and cruel) to allow applications to teach Cores that don't have open spots. The reason (from their perspective) is that current Fellows are often searching for TT jobs during the same cycle, and fairly often leave (before their time, at short notice) at the end of any given academic year. If that happens then they already have an applicant pool from which to fill the position. Let's be honest though: it's a buyer's market and if it were otherwise it seems fair to say that there would be strong pressure to come up with a better or at least more transparent system. It's not even liked internally because the search committee has to trawl through hundreds of applications that might be moot. In other words, the explanation is probably found at the level of labor continuity rather than prestige pumping, etc. It's not undergraduate admissions. Be warned that no matter how long the delay in reply things usually move quite fast once you do hear back (Can't say how the pandemic will affect interview timing this cycle). Finally, a couple of years ago UChicago changed the funding structure of their grad programs, with effects for the number of grad students available to teach. I'm not in the loop enough to know if that meant there was a glut or dearth of grad students who wanted or needed to teach in the Core, but the current and past couple of cycles are either relatively lucky or relatively unlucky in terms of the number of applicants they might want to hire. Wish I could say which, but I won't speculate and it's probably possible to find this out. Best of luck to all, it's a good gig if you can get it. [NB—Based on comments below I want to clarify that I am *not* involved in the search committee or administration for this position, so please treat the above as *anything but* authoritative or official. I am not speaking for the administration or the Society in any capacity. My goal was to try to answer a few questions posed above, not least because I wondered about them myself when applying and would have appreciated the insight. I honestly sympathize with the frustration over the requirements but doubt they will change anytime soon. Either way, the chances of anyone with that kind of institutional authority seeing this are low to nil, so I doubt treating this as the cahiers de doléances will have much effect. I may be wrong about this (and much else) but I at least don't enjoy that authority. Good luck to all.]

  • Not me. I listed both HBC and PP. Received earlier request for additional materials but no interview yet. Hopefully more interviews will roll out soon.
• If anyone who is part of the Harper-Schmidt search committees or administration is reading this: if you know you routinely receive a significant number of applications for positions you do not fill, stop requesting the teaching statement in the first round of applications. Consider requesting it in a later round instead. It is a document that is time-consuming to create (and for the search committee, an additional document to read) and is so custom tailored to the position that it cannot be submitted anywhere else. +1

I don't see these comments as similar to the French revolution, and I didn't read anyone as expecting the process to mimic undergraduate admissions. (I just assumed people are comparing the process to other similar teaching scholars programs, which is a fair comparison) However, having read the insights into the process, it actually does sound a lot like undergraduate admissions, which is helpful to know. Some people are early decision, another group follows, and the rest are rolling admissions until the what sounds like it could be the very last moment. That's certainly not the only way to do things, and I agree with all the other people suggesting this process is a little meaner than average for various reasons (including the requirement of a personalized teaching statement). Unfortunately, it's not too far above average, but meaner none the same.

[Response: Of course, I don't disagree. Having been in your same position I hoped to share unvarnished information about the process as I knew it (recently but not currently), itself part of a bigger, structural collapse of the academic job market. I did that because I wish I'd had these things clarified when I was going through the process and think it helps equalize the playing field for those without the insider networks. But this appears to have been misread as an official comment tinged by nastiness, or endorsement of the current process, or as an invitation to argue about how the system works, none of which is true. I could have given advice on a different application system, perhaps a better one, but would that help? This seems pointless for all but: (1) Cahiers de doléances was not to liken this to the French Revolution, which would be absurd, although no doubt big changes to academia are needed and they're not coming from on high. It meant that listing complaints here in the hope that the relevant higher powers would read and them and then change the admissions process seems quixotic. Nobody was petitioning for changes before that post, suggesting I had been mistaken for someone in a position to make the system better, which is untrue. (2) "It's not undergraduate admissions" was meant in the limited context that they do not publish acceptance rates and have no incentive to artificially boost applications just to massage those rates - - a common practice among colleges. Someone had asked why they let you apply to tracks that might not have open slots - -"Is is a stupid question to wonder why they take applications for positions that do not exist? I understand there's a prestige factor in being able to say something like "we only accepted 2% of applicants," but surely that can't be the only reason..." (see above). I'm saying that the best explanation for this quirk is in terms of labor: Fellows are often on the market in the same cycle and leave before their years are up; having an applicant pool means continuity of teaching staff without waiting a year to fill a position that becomes vacant between October and the end of the year. You might disagree with that analysis but it helps explain some of the otherwise bizarre features (or injustices) of the process without reducing them to caprice, sadism, or prestige. In any case, I thought would be useful to hear from someone who has been in your shoes and gone through this particular application system and then seen it for four years from the inside, but apparently I'm not helping. I'll delete the original post to avoid confusion. Good luck and let future applicants know your experiences and insights if you make it.]

So... it's an adjunct pool. It's not a postdoc or a fellowship and it's not like undergraduate admissions either. They collect applications for positions that may or may not exist, and will contact you if/when a need arises. The positions pay really (really) well if you get one, but it's a lecturer spot dolled out on a rolling and as-needed basis. AKA... an adjunct pool. Personally, I would have loved to have this info just for some context, but hopefully the next cycle can benefit! I am also certainly going to stop using terms like "collegiate assistant professor" or "Harper fellow" to describe an adjunct pool. That's just silly :)

Not exactly, it's a fixed term postdoc fellowship with a set teaching requirement. It's not a lecturer spot (which also exist at UChicago and are subject to periodic renewal), and it's not doled out on a rolling basis (there is a single cycle of applications once a year and a stable number of fellows in total, but the precise number and disciplinary focus of spots in any one cycle fluctuates as people leave). It's a non-renewable four year contract that includes benefits (pension, healthcare, etc), sabbatical, research budget, publishing grant, full faculty status, and even (a new development) union membership. The best general comparison might be the lower rung of a tenure-track position but without the chance to move up the ladder, but really it's just a different kind of position, albeit not totally unique. Compare with the Society of Fellows at Princeton, Michigan, Columbia and USC, some on this board, and you will notice a set of structural similarities (UChicago SoF has a heavier teaching load than its peers but better benefits and the fellowship is longer by 1-2 years; Princeton pays more but the cost of living there is much higher. Harvard Society of Fellows is exceptional in that Fellows don't teach, but this is not the rule and hardly means they are the only ones worthy of the name). Universities rely on lots of kinds of teaching labor, from full professors to undergraduate peer tutors and everything in between, each with its relative pros and cons to employer and employee alike. To assume that "academic labor" means adjuncts and only adjuncts would be to misunderstand this particular position while mystifying other kinds of university teaching work.

Any news on Media Aesthetics? Request for additional materials? Interviews? Even, I dare say, the boot? Crickets be chirpin' here.

^W/R/T this point; most likely since some departments most likely submitted the candidate they would support and others probably had the deadline on Friday. Generally if acceptances and rejections are going out and you haven't received anything, most likely by end of next week since your department/school is just behind. Alas, like most Society of Fellows, it's not really about the research but your pedigree (most winners are from Ivy League or top tier private schools and their research is more philosophical (looking at last year winners) than community, political, or socially based; so don't take it personally when one gets rejected!

The USC Mellon Humanities and the University of the Future Program seeks applications for two-year Postdoctoral Research Fellowships from scholars whose research is in any area of the humanities or humanistic social sciences and who have interest in academic administration. The annual salary will be $75,000, plus benefits and a yearly $2000 research/travel allowance. To apply for the 2021–2023 cohort, candidates must have completed all requirements for their doctoral degree after June 30, 2016 and before July 1, 2021. The Program seeks to address the need for more humanities or humanistic social science scholars in academic administration by opening potential new career paths. Each postdoctoral fellow will spend one semester working closely with a divisional dean; another with either the college dean of undergraduate education or the college dean of graduate education; a third in either the media office, the Academy in the Public Square, or the office of Advancement; and a fourth semester free of any responsibilities to enable fellows the chance to work full-time on revising and publishing their research. Fellows will attend meetings and contribute to policy decisions, working as liaisons between dean-level offices and faculty members, meeting with potential donors and program officers from foundations, and advancing the mission of USC Dornsife. The project will explore the social, ethical and emotional history of face transplants in the context of the wider histories of facial 'disfigurement', reconstruction and transplantation. It will consider the historical emergence of facial transplantation surgery and its emotional meanings for those affected by it, as well as its portrayal in policy debates, works of fiction and media coverage. Working with other members of the project team, the Postdoctoral Research Associate (PDRA) will play a significant role conducting research and collecting data for the project, including carrying out structured, semi-structured and narrative interviews with surgical teams, face transplant patients and their families.
