Revision as of 16:17, 12 January 2021

This page is for postdoctoral positions that begin in 2020-2021.

Last year's page: Humanities and Social Sciences Postdocs 2019-2020

To keep this page consistent and easy to read, please adhere to the following guidelines:

  • Please place new fellowship entries in alphabetical order. Note that "University of X" should be alphabetized by U as first sort, and X as second sort within the U listings.
  • Please mark the title of the fellowship using the H3 header.
  • Please include the deadline and a web link to the ad/website; PLEASE follow the format of other entries.
  • When adding a deadline, please also add this to the Upcoming Deadlines section.
  • For logging comments or updates, please begin your entry with a bullet point. Each entry should have a separate line.
  • For substantive comments or updates about status, interaction, etc., please include the date at the beginning of your entry so that users can scan the info quickly for new entries.
  • Please contribute to transparency in the academy by adding yourself and your advisors to the Academic Tree project.

(12/16) Any others interested in removing the full job descriptions from this page - just including title, deadlines, links, and comments/update? This page is unnavigable. >> Please, do it! This page is so confusing! (12/16) >> Just saw this (12/30). Personally I wish that the full information had stayed on this page--sometimes web pages crash, and generally it's helpful to keep a record of what information these fellowships are requesting

Center for Italian Modern Art (USA:NY) - Summer/Fall 2021 Fellowships - Deadline: February 1, 2020

Each year the Center for Italian Modern Art (CIMA) awards multiple CIMA Fellowships to support research and study of Italian modern and contemporary art for doctoral and post-doctoral scholars. Citizens of all nationalities are eligible. CIMA offers a unique experience to its fellows: the annual exhibition serves as a hub for scholars from diverse academic backgrounds to share research derived from the artworks on view with each other and the public. Emphasis is split between individualized study—gaining an intimate knowledge of artists represented through close looking and through researching in depth a topic raised by the installation—and public discourse, as represented by collaboration on public programming and leading interactive exhibition tours. During their residency, fellows also have the opportunity to pursue their own research and connect with scholars and other professionals in and around New York.

Summer-Fall 2021 Fellowships

The exhibition for CIMA’s next season focuses on the early body of work created by the painter Mario Schifano (1934–1998) between 1960 and 1965. Originally planned for October 2020-June 2021, the exhibition has been rescheduled to January-November 2021 in order to maintain the necessary safety and weather the logistical disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. As institutions worldwide are cancelling fellowship opportunities, CIMA is reaffirming the vital importance of new scholarship through the expansion of its fellowship program.

Updates:

  • 11/2 - Anybody gotten first round rejections yet?
  • 11/2- Not yet, last year they came late November iirc.
  • 11/19 - Posting here since I don't see a separate listing for the Dartmouth Leslie Center for the Humanities postdoc, but received an email rejection for that today. (x4)
  • 11/23 - Rejection email received. "Given the number of applicants, we can offer less than one percent a fellowship." x11
  • Huge fan of the five rejection emails received in a row, too. Really hammered home the absurdity of it all for me. lol! (<-- seriously... message received...) [glad to hear I wasn't the only one who got that bug. I jokingly thought they really hated my application] --- That bug was R2 energy.
  • ---Hey! So, listen, for what it's worth, even though I'm sure you know this already, these things are total lotteries and really not meritocratic; it's all about who's on the committee in a given year and if they're interested in what you do. Example: I was a finalist for Princeton Society of Fellows in 2018, and the way they do things is the Society of Fellows committee cuts the pool down to about 600 and sends those applications to faculty readers. The faculty readers pick 1-2 of their favorites and those people get shortlisted. If the people reading my year hadn't been interested in my work (and it seemed to me to be very coincidental that they were!), I'd never have been shortlisted. For the fellowship I have now, I got it largely because there happened to be an opening in my field because someone got a job and left the program. Total lottery! Keep at it, keep your head up, it'll be alright. :-)
  • 12/1--Any updates from people who did not receive rejection email? Have not received a call or any other emails, either. x5 [The next round probably won’t happen until January.]
  • - 12/15 I was told that there's currently a list of 37 (out of 1100 applicants) and that they're still receiving input in order to decide on interviews. Offers will be made in mid- to late-January. RESPONSE: Is this to say that if a rejection email was not received, one can assume they are in that list of 37<--Yeah, I think it's safe to assume so. That was the case for me. I only reached out recently since I was given another postdoc offer and wanted an update, upon which they confirmed my inclusion in the 37. -01/07/21 - Any further update?
  • 1/11 - Writing sample request; interviews to be held over the next several weeks. <-- Odd question, but when/what time was the email sent? [3:22 PM EST today, asking us to submit a writing sample by this Friday]
  • 1/11 - If writing samples were requested, I assume those of us who have not been contacted, have not been selected. I am also guessing we will be held in there so that they have more options in case candidates end up rejecting offers? < I wouldn't necessarily assume so. Judging from past threads for this postdoc, writing samples are not usually requested, so they might be using it for additional decision making. To those who received writing sample requests, what was the wording (in a nutshell)?
  • -12/10 - Responding to the brief mention of the Leslie Center for the Humanities Postdoc above. Has anyone heard anything after the first round of rejections? It's been crickets over here... 12/18 Crickets here too. 1/11 - still nothing here, anyone heard back about the Leslie postdoc?

ABOUT THE DIGITAL CIVIL SOCIETY LAB

The Stanford Digital Civil Society Lab seeks to understand, inform, protect and promote civil society in a digitally dependent world. Our goal is to foster a thriving and independent digital civil society rooted in a democratic commitment to freedom of association and assembly, freedom of speech and privacy. Our approach is interdisciplinary and cross-sectoral:

  • We conduct and catalyze research across disciplines,
  • We develop learning opportunities for civil society and philanthropic organizations,
  • We support an emerging generation of community advocates, technologists and policymakers through teaching and fellowships,
  • We promote efforts to better integrate civil society and digital policy advocacy.

The Digital Civil Society Lab is investigating key research themes that include:

·      The key dimensions of digital infrastructure and data and how they influence the role of civil society in democracies;

·      The challenges and opportunities for assembly and association in a world of pervasive data-collecting, digital infrastructure;

·      The possibilities for decolonizing technology and developing alternative political economies around digital connectivity

·      The nature of digital data donations and/or the governance mechanisms, enterprise forms, or legal constructs that such donations require;

·      Understanding interactions between global digital networks, digital activism, and traditional and emergent forms of association in civil society.

The Program on Democracy and the Internet (PDI) envisions digital technologies supporting rather than subverting democracy by maximizing the benefits and minimizing the threats through changes in policy, technology, and social and ethical technological norms.

Digital technologies are having a profound impact on democracy in the United States and around the world. New communication platforms that give voice to the previously unheard also empower nefarious actors who seek to undermine democracy, silence journalists and minority groups, manipulate search engines, sow distrust, and more. Concerns about virality, deception, anonymity, echo chambers, and platform information monopolies pose new challenges for democracy in the digital age. Current research to understand these challenges and, on the basis of theory and evidence, craft solutions, remains nascent, fragmented, and incomplete. A strong knowledge base is critical for policy makers, corporate leaders, and technologists to make decisions that protect and promote democracy in the digital age.

The Program on Democracy and the Internet is investigating key research themes which include:

·      Reform options for platforms to combat hate speech, bots, and disinformation.

·      Algorithmic bias

·      Deteriorating health of digital information ecosystems and its effect on democracy and civil rights

·      Changes in the media landscape due to shifts caused by digital innovation.

·      Impact of the internet on election campaigns and voting.

·      The Program on Democracy and the Internet’s work draws from the social sciences, humanities, engineering, computer science, and the law to understand the challenges digital technologies pose to liberal democracies around the world.

The program is led by Principal Investigators Nathaniel Persily, James B. McClatchy Professor of Law at Stanford Law School and Co-Director of the Cyber Policy Center, Francis Fukuyama, Senior Fellow at the Freeman Spogli Institute, and PACS Faculty Co-Director and Professor of Political Science, Rob Reich.

UC Santa Cruz (USA:CA) Primate Ecology and Molecular Anthropology (PEMA) Lab Postdoctoral Researcher - Deadline 1 March 2021

The Primate Ecology and Molecular Anthropology (PEMA) Lab (https://www.pema-lab.com/) in the Anthropology Department (https://anthro.ucsc.edu/index.html) of the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for a postdoctoral researcher position dedicated to the development of a strontium isotope (87Sr/86Sr) map of equatorial Africa under the direction of Dr. Vicky M. Oelze. The PEMA lab is specialized in the behavioral and stable isotope ecology of living primates, particularly African great apes, and well as the use of a variety of stable isotope systems (87Sr/86Sr, δ34S, δ18O, δ15N, δ13C, δ66Zn, δ56Fe, δ65Cu) in archaeological science.

The postdoctoral researcher will analyze ~500 environmental samples (snail shell, plants, soil) from more than 40 field sites and nationwide surveys in equatorial Africa to develop the first 87Sr/86Sr isoscape map for this region, which will provide a foundation for future investigations of historic human displacement from and within Africa during the transatlantic slave trade. This new isoscape ranging from West to East Africa, with a strong representation of geological units in the West and Central African coast, will also be relevant for wildlife forensics as isotopes are increasingly used in identifying hotspots of poaching and wildlife trafficking. This project has the potential to have significant impact on the archaeology of Africa and the transatlantic slave trade, as well as for wildlife conservation.

Besides experience with 87Sr/86Sr analysis involving the operation of a TIMS or ICPMS, the ideal candidate should be fluent in the programing language R, have substantial experience with mapping large datasets (GIS) and a record of scientific publications. Applicants with experience in developing large-scale isoscapes are particularly qualified for this position. Candidates with a strong research emphasis on mobility in past African societies and/or forced migration during the transatlantic slave trade are strongly encouraged to apply, even if they may not have a substantial track record in isotope analysis, but feel confident in data analysis and mapping. The successful candidate is expected to actively engage with international colleagues working on the archeology of slavery and to engage in public outreach on behalf of the project.

Updates:

  • Request for additional materials. 11/19 (Humanities) x 6.
  • It seems like the requests went out early this year... I wonder if they are sending requests out based on track. Do you mind me asking to which track those who received a request applied to teach?
  • I applied for the Human Being & Citizen and the Readings in World Literatures tracks. I got notified of the request for additional materials on 11/19.
  • I applied for Human Being and Citizen and Philosophical Perspectives. I also was notified on 11/19 even though I originally posted it here on 11/20.
  • Thanks. Good luck with the next round!
  • [11/30] Late response, but mine was Greece and Rome and Human Being & Citizen.
  • I also received a request for additional materials on 11/19. Applied for Greece and Rome and Readings in World Literature. Good luck, all!
  • Does anyone have info on how many Humanities positions are open this year? Last year I know they didn't make any Humanities offers.
  • If they didn't make any Humanities offers last year (why would they do that?), then perhaps they are only taking Humanities this year and no Social Science. Has anyone in a social science track heard anything?
    • From what I understand, last year no Humanities post-docs left Chicago, so no new positions were available. Also, the two searches (Hum and Social Sciences) are usually on different timelines.
    • 12/6 ^^^ this is good to know, thank you! I applied in Social Sciences (History of European Civilizations, Classics of Social and Political Thought) and haven't seen/heard anything anywhere yet, plus the official timeline they gave was 'additional materials requested in December' so I'm still hoping...
    • 12/21 - I don't really understand how no one can leave, can someone explain this? These are not indefinite positions, so unless they are on a cycle of not hiring anyone new every four years, mustn't there always be a small cohort for whom this is their fourth and final year as a Fellow?
    • 12/21-This is only conjecture, but Chicago has a number of faculty (and maybe even UC grad students) that also teach in the core program. There may be one fellow in a particular area but 5 faculty at Chicago who are employed to teach those same classes, so even if a fellow leaves they may not need another fellow in that area (especially if undergrad demand decreases, if enrollment is uncertain, or if they want to add more sections in other areas).
  • 12/8 Request for additional materials (Philosophical Perspectives on the Humanities) x 1
    • To the person above, did you receive the email request on 12/8? I'm wondering if this was part of a newer batch of requests...
    • It was a newer batch.
  • 12/14 Anyone heard anything from the Social Sciences tracks?
  • Has anyone gotten a request for Media Aesthetics?
    • Nope, I've been waiting on/hoping for Media Aesthetics, too. They seem to have many graduate students and departmental postdocs available to teach this sequence though, so I'm not getting my hopes up they'll hire any fellows...
  • 12/16 How about "Reading Cultures"? Anyone hear anything?
    • 12/16 Yes, I applied to Reading Cultures and received a request for additional materials last week (12/8).
  • Is is a stupid question to wonder why they take applications for positions that do not exist? I understand there's a prestige factor in being able to say something like "we only accepted 2% of applicants," but surely that can't be the only reason...
    • Adding to the selectivity prestige of "we only accepted 2% of applicants," it is also a way for UChicago to advertise its program to the 1000+ first-round letter of reference writers (last year there were 300+ applicants) who had to learn about the program first before writing. Good advertising among a prestigious in-group! However, requiring 3 first-round letters during this difficult year seems mean, especially given that some sequences won't even have positions open up...
    • Not a stupid question, but an immensely frustrating issue to be sure. If they advertised in tracks they're not planning to pursue it's grossly unprofessional of them, prestige or no prestige.
    • Additionally, some of these sequences are much less popular than others; Human Being & Citizen and Philosophical Perspectives are really popular. Language & the Human and Poetry & the Human are less so. This might affect hiring, as might availability of grads/postdocs in departments to take on this teaching.
    • Also frustrating that they require a teaching statement "describing your methods and goals in teaching a text in a general education course." This writing isn't really usable for other applications. Do they really need it to make the first cut?
    • FYI for future applicants to this position: I just submitted the same teaching statement I use for all of my applications, and I still received a request for additional materials. My statement is not oriented to one text but uses several different textual examples to demonstrate my approach.
    • You didn't answer the prompt for the teaching statement? I am impressed by this bold move.
    • I applied to a track that accepted no one last year, and if luck has it, I'll have applied to a different track that also accepts no one this year.
  • Did anyone apply to "Media Aesthetics"? I noticed that no one currently in the fellowship is even currently listed in that track so you'd think they would want to fill something! (12/16) [See above for discussion re: Media Aesthetics; no one has reported hearing back]
  • 12/16 has anyone heard from "poetry & the human"?
    • Yes (12/8)
  • 12/17: What about Power, Identity, Resistance or Self, Culture, Society?
    • 12/17 Doesn't sound like anyone from Social Sciences has heard anything yet
    • I wonder at what point it becomes safe to assume they aren't hiring anyone in social science...
    • In years past, Social Sciences have heard in January.
  • 12/30: Any update re: Social Sciences?
    • I haven't heard anything (1/4)
    • Nothing here either (1/8)
    • Wonder if they're not doing Social Sciecnes this year after no Humanities last year? But if that's the case, why not just say so and save us all the application effort??
    • Just IMO, I suspect "preventing others from doing unnecessary work" isn't a principle that guides much of anything in academia. We actually seem to value the opposite.
    • 1/8 - Anyone tenacious enough to reach out and inquire?
    • 1/8: I asked (Social Sci.). Will update if they reply...
    • 1/8: Chicago's winter quarter hasn't started yet, so that may be why updates haven't been sent.
    • 1/8 Request for additional materials
      • Can I ask for more details on this? Which track did you hear from? // Adding on: was it via email and personalized? Thanks!
      • Social sciences, Classics of Social and Political Thought, generic-ish email from the school.
    • 1/8: Is it safe to assume that no contact = rejection? And does anyone know how many fellowships were available for the Social Sciences?
      • I don't think that no contact necessarily means rejection at this point. I can't speak for Social Sciences, specifically, but for Humanities, it looks like requests for additional materials were not sent out all at once. Also, as others have said, the Winter quarter for U of Chicago hasn't started yet, which may be causing some delays. In terms of the number of fellowships available, that's anyone's guess at this point.
  • 1/11: Anyone have info on whether HUM interview notifications will go out this week?
