ILLINOIS WESLEYAN UNIVERSITY (IL) – Visiting Assistant Professor of Digital Humanities[]

Illinois Wesleyan University invites applications for a one-year Visiting Assistant Professor of Digital Humanities, beginning August 1, 2017. This position is funded by an Andrew W. Mellon Foundation grant to support our Engaging Tomorrow’s Students initiative, which aims to catalyze curricular and pedagogical reform to enhance student engagement on our campus. The successful candidate will support faculty in developing their multimodal literacies and teaching strategies that bridge the divide between conventional and digital approaches. []

The Visiting Assistant Professor of Digital Humanities will work with faculty both individually and in groups to familiarize them with applications of the digital humanities and to develop pedagogical strategies in the classroom. Successful candidates will demonstrate strengths in the integration of digital humanities tools and methods in scholarship and undergraduate teaching. Examples may include but are not limited to experience/expertise in one or more of the following specific areas: analysis of datasets; linked data and the semantic web; network analysis; GIS; data visualization; and scholarly crowdsourcing/collaborative commentaries. Experience with the development of interdisciplinary courses tied to the humanities, as well as the teaching of digital humanities methods to colleagues, is strongly preferred. The teaching load is 2-2, possibly including a first-year writing seminar, team teaching, as well as offerings in our interdisciplinary Humanities Program.[]

Job Summary[]

The Web, Application, and Technology Studies Program (WATS) in the School of New and Continuing Studies (NCS) invites applications for a Full-Time Non-Tenure Track Instructor beginning September 1, 2017.

The WATS Program offers a cutting-edge curriculum designed to serve adult students who wish to enhance their career opportunities and/or to complete their BA degrees. Courses are delivered online with optional face-to-face support. WATS currently offers a portfolio-based Web Development Certificate focused on front-end web development (HTML, CSS, JS) and professional practice. Course content is delivered online, and students are required to occasionally attend lab sessions where they can work with their instructors and peers through projects and assignments. WATS is continually developing new programs and educational resources.

The Instructor in the WATS Program will be responsible for teaching and service to the school.  They will also play an early startup faculty role in the WATS Program, and NCS in general, requiring an individual who is excited to conceive, build and support new programs and opportunities for students. This includes maintaining an active relationship with the larger technology industry, helping students match to careers and roles, promoting our programs to prospective students, and helping to develop new programs and courses. Experience teaching and performing in backend or full-stack roles is highly valued. 

This position requires a flexible, student-centered candidate who is eager to fill in where needed and proactive in identifying and addressing potential improvements. We operate in a team environment, teaching from common syllabi and working with colleagues from all over the university to provide the best experience for our students. This position will collaborate on the creation of new programs and courses.

The successful candidate will possess industry experience working in a position of responsibility on web-based projects. Candidates should have expert knowledge in, and a passion for, building websites or web-based applications, and should be able to move between both frontend and backend technologies (Python is preferred). Additional technology and industry skills are also valued.

Minimum Qualifications[]

  • BA/BS or higher in Computer Science or related field
  • Experience working in the field of web development and/or website production
  • A portfolio of work highlighting past accomplishments
  • Experience teaching technology (in either formal or workshop/tutorial settings)
  • Experience writing courses, tutorials, or creating other educational/training materials
  • Demonstrated history as an active member within some technology community (Meetup group, open source project, etc.)

Preferred Qualifications[]

  • Advanced degree (MS, MA, PhD, MFA, etc.) in relevant field
  • Extensive (3 years +) industry experience with web development, mobile apps, or other relevant technology practice
  • Advanced specialization in some relevant web technology (e.g. Python, Ruby, devops, infrastructure, etc.)
  • Experience teaching online

University of Maryland, College Park -- Tenure-Track Assistant Professor (Human-Centered Design)[]

The iSchool at University of Maryland, College Park seeks an assistant professor (tenure track) focused on human-centered design of information and technology, including but not limited to human-computer interaction, social computing, digital humanities, data visualization, and visual analytics. The Philip Merrill College of Journalism at the University of Maryland College Park invites applications for an Assistant or Associate Professor in Digital Media, with an emphasis on visual communication, to start in August 2017. We seek a scholar with a strong commitment to interdisciplinary research and excellence in teaching visual communication, including data visualization, design (including interaction design), visual media, virtual/augmented reality, and/or video storytelling. We are particularly interested in scholars whose work employing quantitative methods seeks to improve and advance journalistic practices and sustainability. The successful candidate will be able to translate research into teaching of journalistic practice to undergraduate and master’s students, as well as supervise Ph.D. students in Journalism Studies, and secure external research funding.
