The History Programme invites qualified academics to apply for a faculty position at the Assistant Professor level in the field of Medical Humanities. This position will be a joint appointment between the School of Humanities and Social Sciences (75%) and the Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine (25%).
HSS and LKCSM seek to appoint a scholar within the field of "medical humanities" (history of medicine, medical sociology, medical anthropology, medical philosophy, or studies of global health). We particularly encourage applications by candidates whose research will complement our existing strengths in social studies of science and technology and "global Asia" and develop our research in interdisciplinary fields including: traditional and modern medicine in Asia; the cultural contexts of health and health care; cross-cultural studies of mental health; global health challenges; gender and health; environment and health; studies of reproductive and end-of-life health; or health policy. We will study foundations for moral decision making such as professional codes and ethical theories such as Kantianism and utilitarianism. These ethical tools will be applied to a range of case studies. We will also seek a deeper understanding of important issues and challenges stemming from technology with an eye to how globalization and its attendant cultural and moral pluralism affect them.
Magic Bullets and Wonder Pills T,Th 4:00pm-5:50pm We will spend the semester investigating the history of psychoactive drugs and related medical technology, through a ‘Science and Technology Studies’ (STS) lens. After establishing some of the core concepts in STS theory, we will turn to the development of a number of different psychoactive drugs, and what these drugs tell us about wider social and structural inequalities, science and the politics of knowledge and corporatist logics

The person appointed will be expected to provide undergraduate and graduate teaching in Philosophy of Mind and Philosophy of Cognitive Science. This will include designing and delivering 16 hours of lectures or graduate classes for the Faculty in each academic year, and undertaking 8 contact hours of tutorial or small group teaching for St Anne’s College per week. We are interested in exceptional scholars who take innovative, pioneering approaches to such areas of inquiry as history and the environment; the arts, culture and the environment; environmental ethics and philosophy; environmental theory; environmental justice in a global perspective; the Anthropocene; the nonhuman in the humanities; and varieties of environmental knowledge. Research field should be historical in nature, but periodization and specialization is extremely open-ended. Strongly preferable if candidate is capable of teaching a course on the Scientific Revolution and surveys of history of science/technology, but candidates that could contribute to teaching needs in other strong ways should not be discouraged from applying.
Strong preference will also be given to candidates whose work embraces interdisciplinary themes and digital scholarship.

University of Hong Kong (HKG) - Humanities in medicine[]

Tenure track assistant professor in the Humanities in Medicine, to begin 1 Sept. 2017 or as soon as possible thereafter
This position is "on a three-year fixed-term basis, with the possibility of renewal and with consideration for tenure before the expiry of a second three-year fixed-term contract."
Applicants should have a Ph.D. degree and a proven track-record of research in any area that complements the Centre’s existing strengths. In addition, teamwork skills are essential. As a key member of the Centre for the Humanities and Medicine, the appointee will be expected to help develop the Centre’s interdisciplinary research programme and deepen links with the Faculty of Medicine.
