Anyone else going out of his or her mind over all these failed searches when the market is so flooded with candidates? Maddening, maddening, maddening.

I don't get it. A "buyer's market" to the point that no one needs to buy at all unless the candidate (expletive deleted) gold bullion? In all seriousness, I don't understand it. Do you all?

The Department of Science &Technology Studies (S&TS) at Cornell University invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor position in the history of modern biology (including the biological sciences, biomedicine, and biotechnology). - Given the debates elsewhere about preferences for established vs. brand new scholars, it's interesting to see four ABD candidates, albeit one with a co-edited publication already.
- It also seems that the earlier rumor may be true: Cornell appears to want a "4S-style" candidate, not a historian of biology per se.

What's going on with this search?
Apparently they have been given approval for a junior and a senior hire. 4 junior candidates (who have been contacted) will be interviewed in the spring with some possibility that the search may continue into the fall. There will be a separate senior hire, with interviews to take place next fall. ~150 applications total. This is according to a notification sent to the department's grad students. (3/16)
- This effectively confirmed by a very friendly mass email which I assume was sent to all applicants (31 Mar.)
- Got this too. It was indeed very friendly, and I continue to be impressed by their courtesy and responsiveness in general. Despite those attributes, though, it was also a touch cryptic-- the email didn't specify that the search for which interviewees had been selected was the junior position. I'm glad the poster above filled us in on that!

HMC will not be conducting interviews at the SHOT meeting. There are not enough candidates for the job at the meeting to warrant making the trip. We will interview candidates either at the Montreal meeting of HSS or by telephone.

- I think given the size of the application form and the number of writing samples requested, it's a bit over-optimistic to think they'd send out notifications less than ten working days after the deadline! Absolutely not. We recognize that many applicants may come from schools that do not have separate Science and Techology programs/departments. A PhD in History is fine.

University of Minnesota - Post-Doc in Chronobiology[]

The University of Minnesota Program in History of Science, Technology and Medicine, Twin Cities campus, invites applications for a ten month post-doctoral associate beginning July or August, 2011. The HSTM program has received a National Science Foundation Grant in order to explore and begin to build resources in the history of the study of biological rhythms, known generally as chronobiology.
Candidates must be prepared to work in the contemporary history of the life sciences since 1940, and this background could include work in the history of medicine, biology, or chemistry. The postdoctoral fellow will be expected to pursue a project of his or her own that relates in some way to the history of chronobiology. A cover letter should indicate how the candidate’s research interests relate to the topic of chronobiology as a multidisciplinary area of research and as an emerging specialty.
All requirements for the Ph.D. must be completed by June of 2011. A Ph.D. in History of Science, History of Medicine, or History with an appropriate research specialization is preferred.

It's a history department so my guess is no. It is NOT the history of science department according to the listing.
The history of science and other interdisciplinary programs at UChicago do not hire their own faculty, so it's probably the case that they'll look for someone who can function in the history dept and also affiliate with those programs.
Anyone else have trouble with the online form? I was hoping to not have to ask my recommendera to upload their letters, and I thought I saw an email address I could have them sent to. But now I cant find it.. oh well.
I didn't have any problems with the online form. I suppose you could always send an email to the head of the department: odds are this person is on the search committee.

Finally got a formal rejection (email) [Feb 10]; any idea who did get the job?
No hire this year.

- Interestingly a Visiting Lectureship in Hist/Phil Biology at the CHSS just came up: I've posted it on the postdoc page here
- Just for the sake of clarity for all interested the post AFII mentions, that position has nothing to do with the failed history of medicine hire. The lectureship is the result of the imminent departure of a Mellon fellow and a faculty member, neither of whom is in the history department or connected to medicine-- and the funding is from a different source. Just FYI.
- (yeah - there were questions upthread about the relationship between History & History of Science departments)
- Confirming the information above stating there is no hire this year.
