The 2009-10 Wiki (for reference)

Uh, could we get a headcount? I'd kinda like to know that I'm not just editing this for myself!

reading: 16 desperados + 1!

(great, one job each and none to spare!)

More people and even more jobs so now 2 jobs to spare. It's a little light for historians of medicine though... A little? This is brutal.

Anyone else going out of his or her mind over all these failed searches when the market is so flooded with candidates? Maddening, maddening, maddening.

I don't get it. A "buyer's market" to the point that no one needs to buy at all unless the candidate (expletive deleted) gold bullion? In all seriousness, I don't understand it. Do you all?

Cornell University[]

  • [9/27 Have only seen this job by email so far. So below is the full info from the flyer]
  • The Department of Science &Technology Studies (S&TS) at Cornell University invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor position in the history of modern biology (including the biological sciences, biomedicine, and biotechnology). The position is scheduled to begin on July 1, 2011, and the successful applicant should have a Ph.D. (or equivalent) degree in hand by that date.
  • The Cornell Department of Science & Technology Studies administers two undergraduate majors (Science & Technology Studies and Biology & Society), and it also has its own Ph.D. program. The successful candidate will be responsible for teaching undergraduate and graduate courses on the history of 20th and 21st century science, and will be expected to take a leading role in the Biology & Society major. This individual will also be expected to contribute to and/or complement the S&TS department's established expertise in the social studies of modern biological science.
  • To apply for this position, please submit electronically a letter of application, CV, and copies of sample publications and/or dissertation chapters to Debbie Van Galder (dmvl@comell.edu), and arrange to have three letters of recommendation sent to: Professor Michael Lynch, Chair, Search Committee, Department of Science & Technology Studies, 302 Rockefeller Hall, Cornell University, Ithaca, NY 14853. The deadline for applications is November 8, 2010.
  • Cornell University is an equal opportunity, affirmative action educator and employer.
  • Any news on this search? I'm assuming no news (after a week) is bad news, but maybe they're just snowed under with hundreds of applications! [15th Nov]
  • tumbleweed* - did anyone else here actually apply for this job? [22nd Nov] uh, yup. and no gnus is...no gnus.
  • Yup, no word as of 24 November.
  • At this point no news surely isn't a good sign. Anybody know any little birds who might have info? [Dec. 2]
  • No news either (03 December 2010)
  • Confirmation of application on October 15, then no further news. Have heard that SC is looking for someone more in 4S who can do the occasional HistBio course rather than actual historian of bio. Cannot confirm veracity of that rumor.
  • Rejection letter, on letterhead (is that really rare enough to require comment these days?) [12/14] Edit: I'd say that rejection letters themselves are rare enough that yeah, one on letterhead requires comment. x2 [12/16]
  • They have their short list [12/14]
  • Job talks listed on STS page under Spring Colloq. series
    • Given the debates elsewhere about preferences for established vs. brand new scholars, it's interesting to see four ABD candidates, albeit one with a co-edited publication already.
    • It also seems that the earlier rumor may be true: Cornell appears to want a "4S-style" candidate, not a historian of biology per se.
    • And the winner is........ No one.
    • Are you saying this is a failed search?! [15 Mar.] - neither chicago nor cornell could find a historian of modern medicine/biology that they liked?!
    • Can anyone confirm this runmor?
    • Confirmation one way or the other?
  • Yes, it's a failed search. Confirmed via inside information (e.g. nameless source) on 3/31.

Dickinson College[]

  • "The History Department at Dickinson College seeks a tenure-track assistant professor with a focus in Environmental History. Area of specialization is open, but the successful candidate should be able to teach a range of undergraduate courses."
  • "The department is particularly interested in expanding its offerings in the history of science, technology or medicine. The new member will also be expected to contribute to the department's introductory regional and national surveys"
  • Deadline: 1 December 2010
  • E-mail invite to AHA (12/16)
  • Nothing since AHA, anybody else? (2/21)
  • Offer made and accepted. (3/5)
    • Emily Pawley, PhD Univ. Penn (2009)

Emory University (Race and Science)[]

  • Open-rank faculty position, tenured or tenure-track, with research interests in Race and Science. We recognize the importance of complex and critical examinations of the social, political and ethical challenges raised by the use and misuse of concepts of race in the sciences. We are interested in scholars whose work bridges the sciences and the humanities and investigates socio-political concepts of race as they historically and currently have intersected with, and been constituted by, the biological sciences, medicine, and health more generally.
  • This new position will be located in the department(s) appropriate to the successful candidate's research interests and background. While preference will be given to senior scholars, we will consider applicants at all ranks.
  • Review of applications will begin on February 1, 2011.
  • Any word??? 3/6
  • Good question! Was wondering the same thing....
  • received ack of application, EOP sheet to fill out (3/10)
  • received rejection letter (3/18)

Glasgow Caledonian University (Scot.)[]

  • Lectureship (tenured) in the History of Health and Healthcare
  • Affiliated to the Centre for the Social History of Health and Healthcare which is a joint venture with the University of Strathclyde
  • Further details state that publications/research should be in the area of "Britain OR the British Empire OR North America OR Continental Europe; and in the chronological period 1750 to the present"
  • Deadline: 13 Jun 2011 [provisional interview dates 4-15 Jul. 2011]
    • [Any news on this one? Anyone been contacted, or had their references contacted?]
    • 30 June: invited to interview.
    • Rejection email: I assume they have a hire.
    • Dr Vicky Long (ex. Northumbria)

Harvard University[]

  • NB: link to posting on MERSENNE; I haven't been able to find the job advert elsewhere... Link to new version of job ad
  • 'Scholar/Mentor/Teacher'
  • Open rank, open to any area of Hist Sci, Med & Tech
  • Deadline: 12 Nov. 2010
  • Anyone have any idea what they're looking for here? something new or just fishing for something big?
  • Mario Biagioli is leaving, so it looks like it will be a very senior hire.
  • Could they have a preferred candidate anyway, and just wanted to see who's going to stick his/her neck out?
  • Received friendly acknowledgement (20 Oct).
  • Recieved equal ops form (14 Dec).
  • Any news on this (inquires the ABD, out of sheer curiosity rather than actual hope)?
  • still waiting... (19 Jan)
  • Has anyone heard anything, apart from the acknowledgment? [17 Feb: As mentioned above - equal ops form arrived (email) in Dec, separate from acknowledgement. (x2) I hear there were around 100 applicants.] --Thanks for sharing this. I'm kind of surprised the number of applicants wasn't even higher.
  • Just received equal ops today (2/23) after receiving acknowledgment back in December. Odd. (x2)
  • Hopefully, this means that they are finally looking at the applications and will make a decision soon.
  • What's going on with this search?
  • Apparently they have been given approval for a junior and a senior hire. 4 junior candidates (who have been contacted) will be interviewed in the spring with some possibility that the search may continue into the fall. There will be a separate senior hire, with interviews to take place next fall. ~150 applications total. This is according to a notification sent to the department's grad students. (3/16)
    • This effectively confirmed by a very friendly mass email which I assume was sent to all applicants (31 Mar.)
    • Got this too. It was indeed very friendly, and I continue to be impressed by their courtesy and responsiveness in general. Despite those attributes, though, it was also a touch cryptic-- the email didn't specify that the search for which interviewees had been selected was the junior position. I'm glad the poster above filled us in on that!
  • any news?
  • 2 Nov 2011 - finally! A very friendly rejection email. Better late than never, eh? No word on the successful candidates though.

Harvey Mudd College[]

  • Assistant Professor, History of Science and/or Technology (with a preference for modern history)
  • Start Date: Fall 2011
  • Rolling Deadline: September 16 2010
  • can anyone make any sense of the request to include "a statement about working in and promoting diverse academic environments"? (x2 - I've noticed a lot of applications requesting this, and I'm not clear if they just want a sentence or two saying that I promote diversity or a whole paragraph describing how I do so)
  • any idea when we'll hear about interviews? the ad said they'd be starting them at SHOT next week...
  • HMC will not be conducting interviews at the SHOT meeting. There are not enough candidates for the job at the meeting to warrant making the trip. We will interview candidates either at the Montreal meeting of HSS or by telephone.
  • Thank you for this information. Have phone interviews already been scheduled?
  • Phone and HSS interviews have not yet been scheduled.
  • Thanks! (x2)
  • contacted for HSS interview (x2)
  • Congrats! when/how were you contacted? ---by email on oct 8
  • On campus interviews scheduled yet? (11/17) - yes - I was contacted shortly after HSS
  • Congrats! And thank you for ending the uncertainty for the rest of us who weren't contacted. I know the dept has their reasons for not officially rejecting the other interviewees yet, but twisting in the wind isn't much fun. (x3)
  • Official letter finally arrived (x1) -- Snail mail or e-mail?
  • Official email of rejection arrived 16 Dec. 2010
  • Any news on an offer?
  • Anyone else received nothing--no rejection letter, no rejection email after the interview, nothing? (12/28) -- I have also heard nothing (but I suspect my university's inefficient campus mail system may be to blame). (12/30) i've also heard nothing (1/5).
  • an offer has been made and accepted.

  • Application is strictly through the application form they've designed: no CVs, no cover letters, etc.
  • Deadline: 4 Jan 2011 [Decision late March 2011].

    • If you follow the link above you will find an email address at the bottom of the blurb; contact them for further details and an awesomely huge application form.
  • Any word (Jan. 2011)?
    • I think given the size of the application form and the number of writing samples requested, it's a bit over-optimistic to think they'd send out notifications less than ten working days after the deadline! The original information states that an appointment wouldn't be made until 'late March', so there's probably quite a wait still to come! [17 Jan. 2011]
  • 24 Jan: At least some candidates' referees' have been contacted; suggestions that a shortlist will be drawn up mid-Feb.
  • 10 Feb Polite rejection by e-mail.

  • Rejection letter, last week of Febr.
  • Search failed, at least two candidates decided not to interview after getting other offers.
  • No idea about the veracity of these rumours, but the job has been readvertised and is being discussed on the 2011-12 Hist sci tech med page. AFII 07:11, August 29, 2011 (UTC)
  • Confirmed: no search conducted for 2009-2010 (a little strange, as they knew VAP would be leaving), and then a failed search for 2010-2011.

University of Chicago[]

  • Assistant Professor, History of Modern Medicine, ". . . in any area of modern medical history, broadly construed, including, but not limited to, public health, biomedicine, and medical science . . . "
  • Review of applications will start October 1, 2010.
  • Deadline: December 1, 2010.
  • How heavily disciplinary is this department -- would someone with an interdisciplinary humanites background even stand a chance?
  • It's a history department so my guess is no. It is NOT the history of science department according to the listing.
  • The history of science and other interdisciplinary programs at UChicago do not hire their own faculty, so it's probably the case that they'll look for someone who can function in the history dept and also affiliate with those programs.
  • Anyone else have trouble with the online form? I was hoping to not have to ask my recommendera to upload their letters, and I thought I saw an email address I could have them sent to. But now I cant find it.. oh well.
  • I didn't have any problems with the online form. I suppose you could always send an email to the head of the department: odds are this person is on the search committee.
  • Anyone heard anything about this...?
  • Nope, no word (01 Dec 2010)
  • I had a Skype interview recently. No need to worry if you haven't heard from them yet; there were probably a lot of applications to sort through (03 Dec 2010).:: Congratulations - it might help ease some tension if you could let us know roughly when you applied, in case they are doing rolling interviews to match the rolling applications. :: Early Nov., I think.
    • Thanks. As a data point, I applied mid-October and have heard nothing (although I guess it's possible that my referees didn't upload until later - I didn't think to check) [3 Dec]
  • Anyone else been asked for an interview?
  • Campus interviews are set. [Dec 21]
  • Finally got a formal rejection (email) [Feb 10]; any idea who did get the job?
  • No hire this year.
    • Seriously? Are you saying this is a cancelled search or a failed search? -- Failed. They will almost certainly re-run, but I don't know when.
    • Seriously?
    • Interestingly a Visiting Lectureship in Hist/Phil Biology at the CHSS just came up: I've posted it on the postdoc page here
    • Just for the sake of clarity for all interested the post AFII mentions, that position has nothing to do with the failed history of medicine hire. The lectureship is the result of the imminent departure of a Mellon fellow and a faculty member, neither of whom is in the history department or connected to medicine-- and the funding is from a different source.
