Full Time / Tenure Track Positions

University of Minnesota - TT Assistant Professor Urban Geography/Urban Studies

The Department of Geography, Environment and Society at the University of Minnesota invites applications for a full-time, 9-month, tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor level with expertise in Urban Geography or Urban Studies, to begin fall semester 2019 (August 26, 2019).

We are excited to receive applications from scholars with an established track record of publication and the potential to make theoretical and empirical contributions that will shape the way the fields of urban geography and urban studies respond to a rapidly changing world. Applications are sought from scholars in any urban subfield. Those whose research engages the fields of Black geographies, Indigenous Studies, carceral geographies, urban political ecology, critical infrastructure studies and/or postcolonial urban theory are especially encouraged to apply. The Department is committed to the priorities of the University of Minnesota to recruit and retain a diverse faculty comprising the best field-shaping researchers and teachers and to reduce barriers to interdisciplinary partnerships. The successful candidate will not only contribute to the intellectual life of our department but will have the opportunity to engage with exciting programs across our leading research university, including the Race, Indigeneity, Gender, and Sexuality (RIGS) Initiative, the Center for Urban and Regional Affairs, the Urban Research and Outreach-Engagement Center, the Institute on the Environment and the Minnesota Population Center.

The successful applicant will contribute to teaching, research and service in the Department of Geography, Environment and Society and the Urban Studies program housed in our Department. Salary will be competitive, dependent upon the successful candidate's qualifications and experience, and consistent with collegiate and University policies.

How To Apply

Applications must be submitted online through the University's HR system (see links below). To be considered for this position, please click the Apply button and follow the instructions. You will have the opportunity to complete an online application for the position and attach a CV and cover letter. Applicants should send a cover letter describing their research agenda and detailing their approach to teaching urban courses. Once this step is complete, please add a writing sample and a document with the names and complete contact information for three references by accessing the "My Activities" page and uploading there.

Letters of Recommendation: In addition to the required documents submitted through the U of M employment system described above, applicants must arrange for three letters of recommendation to be emailed separately to gdsearch@umn.edu with your last name in the subject line.

Both the cover letter and the letters of reference should be addressed to the co-chairs of the search committee: Professors Kate Derickson and Kathy Klink. Applicants wishing to ensure full consideration should submit their materials, including letters of recommendation, before October 1, 2018. A PhD is required by August of 2019.
