Announcement for Faculty Position in Comparative Literary and Cultural Studies (CLCS) 

The Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS), Lahore, Pakistaninvites applications for a full-time faculty position on Tenure Track (Assistant Professor) for its program in Comparative Literary and Cultural Studies (CLCS). Though fairly new, the program has a strong core faculty with interests in Persian, Urdu, Punjabi, and Western literatures, screen studies, linguistics, as well as creative writing and filmmaking. The program is searching for a candidate with interests in Persio-Urdu poetry and poetics, and in contemporary debates and methodologies in comparative literature. Ideal candidates should be able to teach courses in their area of research, but should also be able to participate in a team-taught core, and take on or develop courses in transnational literary studies, translation studies etc. 

Applicants are ideally expected to have a Ph.D. by Fall 2020, which is when the appointment begins. Alderson Broaddus University (WV) - TT English Professor (begin Jan. 2019)[]

The primary responsibility of the faculty member in English is to teach undergraduate classes. Successful candidates will typically teach classes in beginning and advanced composition, literature, and other related courses as assigned. A typical teaching load consists of 4 three-hour classes/semester. Job duties also include academic advising of students, participating in college committees, working as a team member in the College of Humanities & Social Sciences, working collaboratively with other faculty and the university administration, assisting in recruiting activities for new students, and participating in and contributing to the general university community.

Qualifications: Doctorate in the discipline preferred. Compensation: commensurate with credentials and experience. Supervision of this position is provided by the Dean of the College of Humanities & Social Sciences and the Provost/Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs.

Although this is a 9-month position beginning August 15 with major duties ending May 15, this vacancy will be filled to begin with the start of classes in January 2019. The Department of Foreign Literatures and Linguistics at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev (Beer-Sheva, Israel) invites applications for a tenure-track position in literature (open rank) commencing in October 2019. We seek candidates who specialize in British Literature (especially pre-1800 English literature); but candidates specializing in Poetry and Poetics (British or American) are also encouraged to apply. We are a research-intensive department with undergraduate and graduate programs in literature and linguistics (all taught entirely in English). In addition to teaching, faculty members engage in research, supervise graduate students, and contribute to the intellectual and administrative activity in the Department and the University. Although teaching and research are conducted in English, a working knowledge of Hebrew is required to integrate successfully into the University.

Looks like the job has been reposted. They're doing phone interviews now. If you don't mind sharing, what was the salary range that the provost indicated in the phone call?

  • (April 2019) Recipient of offer here; it wasn't so much a salary "range" as a figure: $50k, no room for negotiation. Given that this is late April, I'm guessing they didn't have success in the fall.
  • Interesting. You received the offer in Fall then? They concluded campus visits in early April. I think it's going to be difficult to get someone to do a job as huge as this one at that rate. 


Boğaziçi University - Assistant Professor of Humanities[]

The Humanities Program at Boğaziçi University invites applications for two full-time positions as Assistant Professor of Humanities to be filled by Turkish nationals starting in January 2020. Responsibilities: Teaches 12 credit hours per semester ranging from freshman composition to upper level undergraduate and graduate courses in area of specialization; advises students; conducts research; serves on departmental, college, and/or university committees; writes proposals for public and private grants; performs other related duties as assigned. This is a full-time tenure track faculty position that may require teaching in the evenings and/or weekends.  The successful candidate will start work at BSU in August 2019.

Qualifications:  Ph.D. in English, Women’s/Gender Studies, or a related discipline with one or more of the following areas of specialization: Black Feminism/Womanism, Women-of-Color Feminism/Womanism, Postcolonial Feminism, Intersectional Feminism, Transnational Feminism, Latinidad, Disability Studies, Transgender Studies, Ecofeminism, Sexuality, Activism, and/or Transformative Justice.

A minimum of two years of college/university teaching experience. The focus of this position is teaching the Literary Foundation course at the BA and BFA levels. The program in English Literature is housed in the Department of English Language & Literature at NUS and offers undergraduate, masters, and doctoral degrees. The program covers the historical periods of British literature as well as other literary traditions such as American, South-Asian, and Southeast-Asian literature. It also offers modules on film, mediatic forms, visual culture, and critical theory.

For this appointment, we are keen to find a scholar who works in one of the following areas: postcolonial theory and literature (with focus on Asia); nineteenth-century British literature; world literature; gender and sexuality studies; and environmental humanities. The Goodrich Scholarship Program (the Nebraska State-funded program founded in 1972 by the Nebraska State legislature) is an academic unit of the College of Public Affairs and Community Service at the University of Nebraska, Omaha. We are seeking a full-time tenure-track Assistant Professor of English (with an already earned PhD in English from an accredited school) to teach certain required courses in the Goodrich freshman sequence, which includes English Composition, Autobiographical Reading and Writing, and Perspectives on US American Culture (a 6-credit hour course offered in the spring semester). The successful teacher-scholar candidate must have demonstrated excellence in teaching (with at least two years of experience teaching lower-level undergraduate classes) and must have demonstrated a potential for excellence in research and service. The university’s official faculty workload consists of 12 hours every semester. A research-active/productive faculty usually has a 3-credit course release which means a teaching load of 9 credit hours (usually 3 courses) and a research load of 3 credit hours every semester. Every semester, a research-active/productive Goodrich faculty teaches 2 classes (6 hours) in Goodrich and a third class (3 credit hours), usually a graduate or undergraduate course (in another department or unit) open to all UNO students. The teaching assignment includes first-year writing and research, interdisciplinary, and study abroad courses. The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate strengths in thematic areas for comparative courses that resonate with other academic programs at Goshen College – e.g., Sustainability, Women’s and Gender Studies, International Education, Peace and Conflict Studies, and the willingness to lead off-campus experiential Domestic and International courses. Job description

The selected candidate will work in a multi-disciplinary research team counting Social Sciences, Natural Sciences, Health Sciences as well as Humanities and most of his/her research activity is expected to focus on interdisciplinary research to be published in interdisciplinary journals.

Applicants with projects that in addition can strengthen the research strategy and future development of the Uses of Literature research group will be preferred. Special focal areas of the Uses of Literature group are health, aging, society as well as the development of new methods of literary studies to investigate those focal areas. Applicants are especially encouraged to include methodology inspired by digital humanities in their research proposal and/or to consider the topic of grandparenthood in the light of its present cultural transformations.

The position involves research, teaching, supervision and communication, and participation in external collaboration. It also involves administration, as negotiated.

Required qualifications

Major requirements

  • A PhD-degree in European and/or North American literary studies.
  • A proven interest in the fundamentals of literary and cultural studies and/or aging research
  • A detailed research plan with emphasis on interdisciplinarity and a vision for research dissemination and impact also beyond the academic context.

Candidates should also have a strong interest in pursuing excellence in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and in supervising students and researchers.

The Department of English at the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR), invites applicants for a regular lecturer position to begin July 1, 2019. This is a non-tenure track, continuing position in which faculty are eligible for promotion, and in which the predominant responsibility is teaching. We are seeking a generalist with a demonstrated record of teaching excellence to teach required courses in the literature and writing tracks of the English major, especially the foundation courses, Intro to Language (281), Writing About Literature (298), Critical Theory (303). Applicants are also expected to be able to teach American Literature, especially Ethnic Literature, either Core Humanities or Core Writing, and perhaps advanced writing courses such as professional writing or creative nonfiction. The position carries a 4/4 teaching load with potential course release opportunities for academic advisement, assessment, curriculum development, and other administrative duties.

The Department of English has well over 400 majors and minors, with an increasingly diverse population of students studying writing, literature and linguistics. Our faculty teach a wide range of courses which draw upon a multitude of critical, rhetorical and linguistic perspectives.
