Atlanta Metropolitan College - Assistant Professor (2 TT positions)[]
Atlanta Metropolitan College, a University System of Georgia institution, is accepting applications and nominations for (2) full-time tenure track Assistant Professors of English Composition and Rhetoric positions. Atlanta Metropolitan College currently serves over 3000 commuting students at its downtown site at 34 Peachtree Street and on its beautifully landscaped campus which is located 4 miles south of downtown Atlanta and 4 miles north of Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport.
These are full-time ten-month, tenure track faculty positions which report to the Dean of the Division of Humanities and Fine Arts. Teaching assignments typically include English writing/composition courses taught at the freshman and sophomore levels, although other courses (e.g., Writers Workshop/developmental English) will be assigned. Courses may be taught at the main campus and off-campus sites, which may be scheduled during the morning, afternoon, evening, and weekend. Applicants must have a history of effective teaching at the collegiate level and possess knowledge of educational technologies (e.g., Web-based and/or Web-enhanced instruction). The position also requires serving on division and college committees, advising students and providing student support and improvement of the Humanities and Fine Arts curriculum.
Minimum Qualifications: A Ph.D. in English is required. Areas of specialization should be in Rhetoric and Composition, American literature, and/or 19th or 20th Century British literature. The ideal candidate will have excellent academic preparation, strong teaching experience, an established record of scholarly research, and commitment to professional service and collegiality. The successful candidate should possess the ability and desire to provide quality instruction to students with diverse backgrounds while effectively collaborating and cooperating with other members of the faculty, staff, and administration. Preference will be given to applicants who also have expertise and experience with on-line instruction.
The salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience within the budgetary parameters of the college and of the University System of Georgia. George Williams College seeks a full-time, 9 month, tenure-track faculty member in Writing and English. This search is for a faculty member who will teach English and Communication courses in the undergraduate program. To foster student learning, the candidate will be responsible for tutoring, supervising student tutors, promoting the work of the Writing Center across campus, and collaborating with faculty to provide additional support for student writers across all levels and areas of curriculum. An earned doctorate in English, Writing, or a related field is required. Some combination of familiarity with environmental and/or world literatures; experience in writing center tutoring, coordination, evaluation, and assessment; familiarity with the use of technology in writing intensive courses; digital rhetoric and computer-bases/digital production web technologies; experience in creative writing, journalism, and/or technical writing; and experience in online teaching is preferred.

A: (2/1) I emailed Human Resources on Friday, Jan. 27th, and received this message in reply: "I spoke with the committee chair and he has informed me that the short list of candidates are being contacted this week. Those individuals selected should be notified by the close of business today." So I'm assuming those those on the short list have already been contacted and those of us who haven't heard anything are out of the running.
A: I was just contacted today (2/9) via emal about being on the short list. I don't know if everyone else was also conatcted today. They said they got over 400 applications, so they took extra long to make selections.
A: Likewise, contacted via email. Relative to the current market, 400+ apps for two positions seems, I hate to admit, "reasonable." This is my jaded view, folks.

At this time, the Assistant/Associate Professor will teach a Shakespeare elective in alternate years and will develop new electives for juniors and seniors related to the performing arts.

English faculty teach four courses per semester, typically with three preparations. Q: Wait, what does this mean: "Additional documents not required by on-line application like dossiers, letters of recommendation, and writing samples are not required but may be submitted?" If they're not required, why would I submit them? Are they subtly hinting that I probably should send them that stuff, even though it's not required? Or is this for people who pass the first round of screening? Any ideas?
A: Not applying for this, but if I were, I would submit the minimum materials requested by the online application and then let them request other stuff (dossiers, writing samples) if they want to once they have reviewed the applications. I would guess this language is more HR boilerplate than subtle hint, but that might just be me .....

A: In the absence of any additional information, I would put all three. Seems like this job ad is taking lots of shortcuts. Maybe since they have three positions and four desired emphases, they decided to just throw them all out there and let God sort 'em out (as it were). Sure doesn't make it easy on any of us, though.

Teaching Fellows will garner valuable faculty experience in the life of a nationally recognized, small liberal arts college, serving as an academic adviser to a small group of students, while also participating in the development of the first-year writing program and in the work of the English department on a campus where the literary arts thrive. Teaching Fellows will participate in the first-year faculty mentoring program, receive special training for advising, and be eligible for other faculty development opportunities. The position begins in the fall of 2012 and is renewable upon review for up to three years.
The successful candidate will have experience and demonstrated commitment to teaching writing as well as interest in teaching and mentoring students in a residential, liberal arts college environment. This position involves teaching a 3/3 load including at least two sections of "Literature and Composition" each semester; the remaining courses (introductory or upper-level literature courses) will be assigned in accordance with the candidate's additional areas of specialization and the needs of the department. While the specialization is open, we especially welcome applications in the following areas: postcolonial literature, Latina/Latino literature, Asian-American literature, world literature, gender and sexuality studies.
