Rejection post-MLA:

Campus visit:

Offer made:

NOTES & QUERIES:

  • The college's website is exceptionally coy about professorial rank/status, but it sure looks like there's a dix-huitièmeiste already on the faculty...
  • Not sure this is the case actually....
  • The "curriculum" page lists all of the French faculty with their ranks, and one of them is indeed a visiting assistant professor who at the very least has presented on 18th-c. reception of 17th-c. literature.
  • Still, there is no rank/status regarding that person and their website might not be up to date.
  • The instructions state to send all the materials (cover letter, CV, letters of recommendation, etc.) as ONE attachment to the department administrator. Is there a way to do this via interfolio? Obviously, I don't have access to my anonymous letters of recommendation and can't include them in the attachment. Thanks to anyone who can interpret this for me!
  • If your reccomenders have uploaded their letters to interfolio, you will just click on the elements you want to include (CL, CV, & Rec letters) and Interfolio will transmit them all as one document. If you try to open the document, you will see your letter & CV, and the rec letter pages will be blank, but the school will see them.

NOTES & QUERIES:

  • I had an MLA interview on January 6.  They thanked me for my thank-you note on January 10, but since then I have heard nothing from them.  I contacted one search committee member by phone and email, and another by email, during three months, January, February, and March, but nothing.  Can somebody please tell me what's going on??
  • I wasn't interviewed for this position but it sounds like either they lost the funding, or they are taking care of the candidates they decided to invite on campus. They usually never tell anyone they have been turned down until someone signs a contract. It's not uncommom that candidates invited on campus cancel at the least minute because they decided to take another job, therefore they go back to the list...
  • I don't think they've lost funding for the position.  All their five or six French classes next Fall were supposed to be taught by that one new person, and they're all on the Fall class schedule; they just don't have a teacher attached to them.

  • Did anyone else get this message yesterday? "Our search committee has begun to review applications and hopes to schedule interviews with select candidates soon"? It doesn't make much sense if they already scheduled interviews when they sent it out.  [+1]
  • --> I think some universities are trying to keep candidates on the back burner in case things don't work out with their main choices. I had a university I interviewed for tell me that they had not yet selected their candidates for campus visits when all 3 candidates for campus visits had already been contacted! A little honesty would be much appreciated in this very stressful process...

Word on the Street[]

How long it takes to hear back from your interviewers (mla interviews), I had couple interviews but, I still didn't hear anything, does it mean that they picked someone else, or is it too early for them to respond? Thank you for any infos and keep us updated please.

  • Looking for some feedback from the hive here. So, I got seven first round interviews but no campus visit. I am thinking that this 7:0 ratio is reflective of the fact that I'm performing very poorly on the interviews. Am I right? I am ABD and not from an IVY or first-tier unv. Can you all share your thoughts? This is my second year in the market and am thinking of not returning to this soul crushing process next year.
  • It absolutely could be pure chance since we never know exactly what schools are looking for. But, have you done mock interviews with colleagues and mentors? Some schools have career centers who help with this, too. Regardless, I wouldn't give up after two years on the market, especially being ABD. There are so many of us on the market that schools have the option of hiring only PhDs. Best of luck and keep your head up!
  • 6 interviews and 2 campus visists but no job. Not my first year on the market either. Soul crushing for sure.
  • If you got that many interviews (7!) I would say: don't give up! That amount of interest in your profile is impressive. You should definitely seek out more help/advice/training on interviewing, as another poster suggested. This is my 3rd year on the market, I'm ABD at a top-tier R1 public university, and I only got 2 interviews this year (no campus visit). Obviously everyone needs to do what is right for their life, but getting that many interviews sure means you are doing something right...
  • Thank you so much for your advice/notes, everyone who commented. It's a lonely, isolating process in so many ways, and it's wonderful to have a sense of community.
  • I guess, it is too late to hope for a campus visit from MLA interviewers!
  • I don't think it's too late... I'm giving it until the end of the week.... Such a crushing process :(
  • -> I had 3 interviews at the MLA and I am still waiting to hear. I think it's early still. I have a friend who had 1 and that friend hasn't heard anything either.
  • I had 2 as well and haven't heard from them. I am assuming they will contact candidates this coming week though since they want to do campus visits during the last week of January. I am assuming it is roughly the same thing across the board so hopefully we get answers this week... Good luck!
  • Several of my interviewers told me that they would be into touch in 1-2 weeks. Some search committees need to get the department to approve their campus-visit invitees and for others the logistics are complicated by early semester start dates/ trimester schedules. It really just depends on the way things are set up at the institution. In my experience, French searches are also slower than, say, English ones. In the past, the quick responses my friends in English had following the MLA stressed me out quite a bit! For French it is still early!
  • since the MLA was 2 weeks ago, is it ok to contact your interviewers to know what's up (knowing fairly well that it's probably a no go at this point)?
  • I have a few points I'd like to make for those still waiting on news after MLA. First, as of today (1/22), around half of the jobs that were interviewed for at MLA are not yet in the campus interview round, at least according to the wiki. This very well could be just because no one has updated them here, but I don't think all hope is necessarily lost. Remember that schools don't always send out all of their campus invitations at once. Sometimes committees decide on one person to invite but are still deciding who else to invite. Additionally, either by the decision of the school or the candidates, the first candidates they invite don't always work out. In that case, it could be *months* before you're invited to campus. My view, then, is to be positive and consider yourself in the running until they tell you you're not or until someone else has accepted the position. I do *not* advise contacting committees at this point, unless of course you have another offer that you need to decide on quickly. If anyone disagrees on this point, I hope you will share your views as well. Good luck to you all!
  • Thank you, above poster ! :)

This may be off topic, but is anyone (female) interested in sharing her room during MLA convention, if so, please reply to this post and I will provide the contact email address.

I am just curious, based on the updates, only 4 or 5 institutions started contacting potential candidates and the rest didn't, is it because the admins aren't updated on the jobs status or because the majority of these institutions didn't start the application review yet? It seems starnge and late as MLA convention is only few weeks away. Thank you for keeping us updated!

  • The Admins are not necessarly the ones updating the job status. Anyone reading this page can (should?) share informations if they have some. I'm someone on the job market and when I get contacted I come to update it here.
  • I think more updates might happen in the next week or two. But we have to remember that not everyone who gets an interview or offer uses this page!

(Moved Dec. 2) In reality, the concept of the "MLA" interview is being phased out. Like it or not. The conference is quite expensive, and Skype has essentially ruined the allure of the experience. Very few jobs will be filled "via" the MLA conference and the so-called "coveted" MLA interview. Let me offer a few words of encouragement and tell you that more jobs will likely be posted in January. Keep your eyes open. And do not be afraid to apply for a VAP. More and more universities are going the "VAP" route. It requires less of an up-front commitment by the institution, is (usually) approved more quickly by the administration, and will allow you to cut your teeth. Competition is fierce. Hang in there.

Seems like the field is more or less in free-fall - it's not until well after the impact that one can be sure to have reached rock bottom.  I have been a more or less interested observer for 9 years or so, and this is easily the most anemic job list I have seen in that time.  Rather like constant acknowledgements of the hottest year on record, this appears to be the new normal.  +1

Someone deleted the comments about Ithaca College (most likely) having an inside candidate. Information like this is extremely useful to job seekers and should not be deleted. +1 (if you look up the IP address of the person who deleted the comments, they are located in Ithaca. Coincidence?)

  •  And here is the original comment about Ithaca College. It has been deleted twice by the thought police. I did not write the comment, but I am reposting it because the lack of transparency about the ins and outs of this job market helps no one: "Don't get your hopes too much on this one guys, it's an inside candidate. I'm not at the college in question, but I know someone who knows the faculty there. Seems one of their assistant prof is actually a visiting assistant prof and it's this person they are finally hiring in a TT."
  • I imagine it's because schools need a certain number of applicants for the search to go through... Doesn't justify making hopeful candidates pay to send their materials!
  • "Thank you for applying to the position of ASSISTANT PROFESSOR - FRENCH in Modern Languages and Literatures at Ithaca College.  We were fortunate to have attracted a competitive pool of applicants for this position and regret to inform you that the position has been offered to one of the other candidates. " - No MLA/Skype interviews, no campus visits...

Question for page administrator: Some pages have the date that something was posted visible in the Recent Activity section. Would it be possible to have this for our page, too? Feel free to delete this if this isn't possible. Thanks!

  • A: there was a recent recalibration of the RSS / Activity Feeds due to a system glitch. Wikia was able to fix it, but the date function is still not working. I have alerted them to the issue, but they were not able to fix it immediately. So for the time being, dates will not be generally visible in the feeds. If you click the link to specific edits in the feed, you will be able to find the date when the edit was made. If the issue is fixed, hopefully we will be able to return dates to the feeds. Apologies for the inconvenience. --Una74 (talk) 15:24, August 26, 2016 (UTC)
