  • Over 300 applications. Normal department practice is for the search committee to come up with a long-long list, present it to the department for input, whittle it down to a long list that gets skype interviews, then have a short list for campus visits. Haven't heard anything more specific. (11/19)

  • Has anyone heard anything about this position? Rejections? Requests for additional materials?
  • They had nearly identical open rank postings in recent years (for positions starting in 2015 and 2017 if memory serves).  I applied for both.  They didn't send anything in 2015 and in 2017 I received a snail mail rejection in August, nine months after the application was due.  Based on my experience, don't expect to hear from them anytime soon unless you're lucky enough to get an interview.

NOTES:

  • You scared me with this request; I thought for a second that this job had moved forward, which wouldn't make sense. The job market moves slowly in the fall. There's never a rush to send out requests around Thanksgiving. It seems likely committees are meeting this week, and requests will go out by early next week. Also, keep in mind a lot of these jobs this year are in English departments--not Film & Media Studies. English timelines in years past have been built around MLA quite often: notify in early December, pre-interview (if at all) by mid-December, in-person interview at MLA in early January, invite to campus by mid-January, have a candidate under contract by March. Luckily, many departments are moving away from this model, but I still wouldn't expect these English jobs to really start interviewing until the middle of December. (11/26)
  • Did anyone who interviewed last week get a sense of the timeline for setting up campus visits? The waiting is excruciating! (12/7)

Connnecticut College (CT) - Visiting Assistant Professor in Film Critical Studies — ZOOM INTERVIEW STAGE[]

The Connecticut College Department of Film Studies seeks candidates for a one-year, full-time Visiting Assistant Professor position in Critical Studies beginning July 1, 2019. Required: Ph.D. in hand at time of appointment, a record of outstanding scholarly work, excellent and innovative teaching on a college level, and experience teaching introductory and advanced film theory and criticism courses.  The person we hire will be responsible for teaching the program’s core course, Film 101, as well as advanced courses in the candidate’s specialization. The teaching load is five courses for the academic year. The candidate is expected to hold one night screening per class.  This position is benefits eligible.

Applicants who specialize in all areas of film theory and criticism will be considered.  The Film Studies Department is especially interested in candidates whose research and teaching focus on representations of intersectional identities in contemporary moving image culture, especially work intersecting race and ethnicity, gender and sexuality, and the industries that construct and inform those representations.  We encourage candidates to apply who might contribute to the study of moving image culture outside of the United States, especially cultural products from non-European and Indigenous populations.  The Film Studies Department recognizes the need to support and enhance our students’ media, visual, technological, and information literacies through the close textual analysis of a varied range of moving image representations and works.  The ideal candidate will have an understanding of film and its transformation as it has moved into different platforms (including video and digital media), as well as its varied experiences within a range of socio-cultural contexts.

We are seeking an enthusiastic and dedicated colleague who is eager to support, diversify, and grow our department’s culture and community in ways specifically suited to a liberal arts environment. Because of the small size of our classes, and the close working and collaborative environment of our Film Studies courses, candidates should demonstrate dedication to innovative and interactive teaching. An interest in engaging with and incorporating diverse perspectives should be reflected in the candidate’s approach to teaching and in their course materials. The candidate will need to demonstrate the ability and desire to rigorously engage, inclusively support, and continue to draw a passionate and diverse student body to our major and to the College.  The candidate’s experience and dynamic involvement in service work toward one’s discipline, department, and community are of particular interest.  We are also looking for a candidate with both the experience and desire to work closely with first year students, helping them to master moving image languages in both verbal and written forms.

Queen's University Belfast (UK) - Research Fellow (Film Studies & Crime Fiction)[]

The Research Fellow will be an active member of the European-funded project “DETECt: Detecting Transcultural Identity in European Popular Crime Narratives”, by assisting in the development of research proposals and the planning and delivery of the research activity within a specified area so that the overall research objectives of the project/school are met.

The successful candidate will form part of a cross-disciplinary research team working with staff in Film, English, French and Geography.

The post relates primarily to the Work Packages “Creative Industries” and “Creative Audiences”, one of eight sections of the project, specifically focusing on the study of the production, distribution and consumption practices of European crime narratives in the fields of the film and television industries.

Working alongside thirty post-doctoral and experienced researchers hosted at the other twelve partner universities, the post holder will be expected to provide quantitative and qualitative data, data and textual analyses to be used in the project publications and online outputs.

The researcher may use or acquire their skills in data visualisation to produce maps and graphs to be included in the project portal, reports and research outputs. The post holder will also contribute to dissemination activities including the organisation of workshops, screenings and other public events, as well as supervision of the project social media account.

This post is available until 31 July 2021.

Assuming that popular culture plays a decisive role in circulating representations that constitute a shared cultural asset for large sectors of the European society, DETECt examines examples of crime fiction, film and TV dramas from 1989 to present, to learn how mobility strategies such as co-production, serialisation, translation, adaptation, distribution, and more, have influenced the transnational dissemination of European popular culture. Researching the contemporary history of the crime genre in Europe, DETECt aims to identify the practices of production, distribution and consumption that are best suited to facilitate the emergence of engaging representations of Europe’s enormously rich, plural and cross-cultural identity. The knowledge acquired through a detailed research programme will be used in cultural, learning and public engagement initiatives designed to prompt the elaboration of new transnational formats for the European creative industries. These activities will profit from a set of experimental research and learning resources and innovative collaborative tools, aggregated and organised on DETECt Web portal.

The successful candidate must have:
