The successful candidate will join a dynamic faculty working to advance innovative research and excellence in teaching through its work with the diverse and growing undergraduate and graduate student population at Arizona State University.

This is a full-time, tenure-track appointment at the rank of assistant professor in our cinema studies stream. The department seeks and develops artists and creative thinkers who are willing to explore the experimental. A strong history of underground and independent production has made our innovative department an antidote to the Hollywood industry model.

Requirements: Applicants must have a PhD in film studies, art history, or a related field by time of appointment, as well as a strong dedication to teaching and an active research program. ^^ I'm not sure I would put it that way, but I understand your frustration. It's not exactly a top-tier school, & to be rejected by them is quite depressing.
It's not about being "rejected by them." I'd take pretty much any TT job, even in fucking east Tennessee. It's about learning more information from a damn wiki than from the actual search committee. I've heard nothing since December yet they've moved on to campus interviews and probably hired someone by now. It's not just thsi place. It's everywhere. I love how search committees act like the internet doesn't exist. It's not ethical.
This is a pretty standard approach for search committees, unfortunately. The idea from their perspective is that they haven't cut ties with the pool of candidates from the initial stage of interviews should one or more of the on-campus invitees back out. They can get in touch with another candidate and fill in that slot. Committees live in fear of a failed search and hedge their bets to make sure that doesn't happen, often disregarding the experiences of applicants. The best approach to this situation from my experience on the market was a committee chair getting in touch as soon as they selected their candidates for the campus interview, letting me know that I wasn't included, but also saying that these things are subject to change. It was honest, informative, and encouraging to know they cared enough to keep me in the loop. The premise that committees need to cloak every aspect of the seach in secrecy is something I'll never understand.

The Department of Visual and Media Arts at Emerson College and the Interdepartmental BFA Program in Comedic Arts at Emerson College invites applications for a full-time tenure-track Assistant Professor position in media studies with a particular specialty in comedy and the intersections of personal, political, and/or national identity. This is clearly crafted for a current Scholar-in-Residence who, coincidentally, is also an alumnus of the program (B.A. and M.A.). They should have gone all in with the job posting and required that applicants have published a book on Laugh-In and articles on Bromance comedies. If you're going to go through the required motions of hiring an internal candidate at least have a sense of humor about the façade. To their credit, Emerson made modest requests for application materials and did the bare minimum in circulating the job posting.

I doubt they've created an Assistant-level position for someone who seems to have been there for a couple of decades.

Emory University (GA) — TT Assistant Professor or non-TT Lecturer — Film and Media Studies[]

Emory University’s Department of Film and Media Studies invites applications for a new position at Emory. The successful candidate will have significant experience as an imaginative creator in the evolving film, television or new media entertainment industries. The candidate must also have a strong commitment to nurturing undergraduates across several years of coursework and internships.

This unique position entails teaching four to five courses annually (albeit with a course reduction for administrative work). These classes include a senior capstone course, Content Creation, in which students learn about the workings of the industry, and plan, produce and distribute their own media content. Other courses will depend on the hire’s areas of expertise, but could include topics such as film, television and digital content development, budgeting, scheduling, production, marketing and distribution (national and international), the contemporary American media industry, independent production, key film festivals, key global markets, or the history of the entertainment industry.

This hire will also co-direct our 40-student Concentration in Film and Media Management, a collaboration between our dynamic and growing department and Emory’s highly-ranked Goizueta School of Business, which gives our students knowledge, competencies and experiences for pursuing a post-graduate career in the media industries. Part of the co-director’s duties will be building the Concentration and our industry curriculum by cultivating relationships with Atlanta’s dramatically expanding media industry (recently ranked first in the country for feature film production) as well those in Los Angeles and New York. These efforts could also include assisting with fundraising for program initiatives. Appointment begins in Fall 2018.

Candidates should hold an advanced degree (MFA or Ph.D.), and at a minimum, demonstrate evidence of outstanding presentation skills in an industry or educational context. Preference will be given to applicants who can demonstrate excellence in undergraduate level teaching. Responsibilities: The department seeks a dynamic media maker with the technical skills and all around production knowledge to provide professional expertise, teaching excellence, and inspiring mentorship to our undergraduate students. From diversity in the curriculum to providing students with the opportunity to learn from individuals with a variety of backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives, the Department of Electronic Media and Film is committed to providing its students with a vibrant and diverse educational experience. The typical teaching load includes teaching two sections of foundation courses in the film and video production curriculum, as well as one section of either cinematography, editing and advanced post-production techniques, or narrative filmmaking. Teaching these courses requires integrating technical and conceptual skills in hands-on media production and storytelling, using professional tools and techniques, as well as emerging mobile platforms, consumer gear, and internet-ready production methods.

Faculty assigned an instructional workload of six (6) course units per academic year for the first year. Beginning the second year the workload reverts back to the standard instructional workload of seven to eight (7-8) course units per academic year with the possibility of reassigned time for scholarship or additional service. Scholarship and service are also required. Creative scholarship should demonstrate a commitment to professional development in the candidate’s field of study. For service, the faculty member will participate in committees at the departmental, college, and/or university level, help with student advising, and build commitment engagement.

The UCLA Department of Film, Television and Digital Media seeks to fill an Assistant Professor, tenure track professor position in Cinema and Media Studies with expertise in critical and historical approaches to experimental and emergent media in film, television, video, and digital media.

The Department encourages work that aims at social impact. We see non-traditional, alternative, and innovative, media as a critical interface between media studies and practice. Such media has often catalyzed innovation in narrative form. At the risk of defending ethically dubious behavior on the part of search committees, this kind of practice is common. As someone on the outside looking in on the job market (and who did not apply for this position), I recognize that committees have the right to hire whomever they want. Whether it's done transparently or not, whether it's a legitimate search done from scratch or rigged all along, it won't change the final outcome either way in terms of committees (and more often, many search chairs) hiring whomever they want. My only concern is that academia needs to find a way to be more transparent for the sake of other candidates who don't necessarily have the time or money to apply for jobs they probably have no shot at getting. How about declaring that "prospective candidates should be made aware that a preferred candidate has been identified in this search, but that all applications will still be reviewed," or something like that? Anything can happen in the course of a search (maybe the "inside candidate" will leverage the department for a better job elsewhere), so folks can still try for the heck of it, but at least they can be made aware of the risks they are taking. Concerned senior members of higher education should take this issue seriously if they want to ensure credibility and transparency as a collective institution.

I really appreciate reading this. We focus on time, but can we also appreciate the enormous amount of emotional resources that go into applying, interviewing (there were Skype interviews for this position), maybe even attending campus visits when all along a position is "rigged"? It is an immensely debilitating labor and one that is given under the false pretense of parity. I think it goes beyond being unscrupulous to become a full-on abuse of power. I knew academia was toxic when I exited grad school but damn, I never thought it was so deliberately abusive.
Perhaps the most unscrupulous aspect of this listing is the amount of material they requested, including a 3- to 5-page essay on promoting diversity.
^^ This right here. If you're not going to consider other candidates, don't ask them to submit a ton of material. As far as "this practice is common", I don't think that anyone who applied (including me) is going to feel any better knowing that "this happens all the time" is being used as an excuse.
I definitely agree with your first point. If they have a good idea whom they are going to likely try to hire, then they should just ask for a letter and CV. Nothing else. Period. They can always request more later if they are still *seriously* considering the applicant at the point. But the problem is you have a lot of politics involving departments, deans, etc., and a lot of people who won't necessarily have a final say in whose hired but who like to pull rank or go on a ego trip so that they can feel engaged (like forcing the committee to ask for 5 page diversity statements which people on the committee don't even want take the time to read when they are busy enough as it is). To the other point, I wasn't trying to make anyone "feel better." I've interviewed for at least three different positions off the top of my head that ended up going to an inside candidate. And those are just the ones I know for sure. It sucks. No question. And I'm still on the market, so don't mistake where I'm coming from. But I guess I was also trying to contextualize it for newer candidates on the market, while also trying to get the attention of senior academics to maybe be a little more thoughtful, considerate, and humane. But I was also trying to make a broader point that there really isn't *that* much of a difference between an inside hire versus how many other searches go. Search chairs and committees often know--through all sorts of means--going into a search whom they hope to hire, whether they are "inside" the program already or not. For example, several years ago, they ran a media studies search at Middlebury where the search chair put on this big show on his blog about how "transparent" the search was going to be. He documented every step in the process along the way. And what happened at the end? He hired one of his old buddies. So the transparency just ended up looking like a long con to make it look like it was a fair search all along. But the thing is--that is how most searches go, if you really see behind the scenes. The only problem with what happened at Middlebury was how disingenious the whole show looked. But yeah, it sucks. Be angry. But also don't forget the forest for the trees. Inside hires are just a more public example of a more complex issue.
- To add a point, re: the prof. at Middlebury. He also onced called for SCMS to only allow pre-constituted panels at their conference, with the requirement that each panel have a token grad student. Nevermind that fact that the vast majority of grad students presenting at the conference apply open-call, or that these students *need* these credentials far more than scholars of his generation did when they were entering the market. Point is, this particular prof. is the worse: he fancies himself the discipline's moral compass, when in fact he is one of its chief gatekeepers.
Yes, a more complex issue... To add to these points: I don't even think Departments always know (or agree on) what they prefer or even want. I'm currently a VAP who has no idea if the search committee and faculty in general would collectively agree that the internal candidate (me) would be preferred. And regardless of what they're thinking, I have to be on the market-- from that perspective, it's not like I've reserved a special spot for them, either.
I just want to say that I really appreciate this thread. Being on the job market is wretched and lonely. I have been on search committees as a postdoc and grad student and it *is* a mess. It is the kind of knowledge you will prefer not to have because it makes you bitter and hopeless. As a person above mentions, even as a VAP you have little security. Most of my VAP friends "lose" the tenure-track job to other external candidates. We call it the "shiny new trinket" mentality. So yeah, I see where the long poster was coming from--offer a wider picture to contextualize it's often not about *you*. It might not make anyone feel better when you are still unemployed, but it might just give you a little energy to keep on going. Also I have no idea how anyone ever gets a job short of low-key fraud/ influence nowadays, but here we are. (A very tired tired applicant who, unaware of all the backstage stuff, actually interviewed for this position).

I just want to thank everyone who commented on this. I was a finalist for this position. They called me the day after my Skype interview to invite me to campus a week later. They tried to get me to come four days later, but I said I needed more time. They requested both a teaching demo and a job talk - each an hour long. The teaching demo was for a real class of students. They refused to send me a syllabus for said class and only gave me little bits of info about what had already been covered, after I dragged it out of the current instructor. They gave me a topic to present on, and then told me that another candidate was already covering the same topic at the class meeting directly prior to my visit. They wouldn't tell me what that person covered until the day before my visit, so I planned an entire lesson without knowing if I would be repeating the same info as another candidate. The visit was grueling - the first day was 12 hours with only one ten minute break. (Note to hiring committees: lunches, dinners, etc. with faculty are *not* breaks.) They called me a week later to tell me that someone had already accepted an offer. So many things need to change about the contemporary academy, but to standardize and streamline application procedures would be such a small thing that would make such a huge difference. I personally believe that all calls should request only a CV and cover letter. Why burden referees, let alone candidates, with letters and additional materials unless their application will actually be considered? Candidates should be given at least three weeks (more if a teaching demo AND job talk are required) to prepare for campus visits. When I think of all the unpaid, ultimately fruitless labor that goes into the academic job market - my own and so many others' - it makes me want to curl up into a ball and never get up again.
WTF? I am so sorry for what the person above just reported. That is cruel beyond any measure or necessity. I know it offers no consolation, but I wish you had not gone through such grueling travel/prep/performance for nothing. I also wish less kind things on this institution—and others that conduct themselves in such unethical ways— now that I hear all these reports. And wishing you all the best as we brave into the job market. May we be on the other side soon.
To follow up after the fact (not to mention the long, fruitful discussion above), from looking at the department website it appears that this was not an internal candidate after all. Instead they hired someone making a lateral move from another TT job (or maybe worse than a lateral move since it seems they would have been up for tenure review this year at their previous institution). Regardless of it being an external hire, from the comments above and my own experience interviewing in the Skype stage, this was a curious search and always felt like they had a pre-selected candidate. Wishing the new hire all the best and congratulations on the job!

- To dispel erroneous rumors.*** The committee did 6-7 skype interviews and then invited 3 candidates. There was never a pre-selected candidate and this is corroborated by the fact that an outside person was hired. Each candidate has 100% access to instructors for information and questions about their presentations. Take advantage of it! Also, DU's administration works hard, so they don't leave things for the last minute. Expect the department and University to communicate with you in a timely manner. And if you have questions about the process ask them. I hope that helps to clear up some of what has been said. Congrats to the new hire.

The Radio, Television & Film Department at Rowan University is searching for two full-time faculty to teach in the following areas: film history, television history, media industries, new media, game design, sports production, studio television production, writing for film and/or television, or post production. The ideal candidate has experience in more than one of these affiliated areas. Faculty in these positions will teach 12 credits per semester in both the fall and spring with the potential to teach overloads and possible summer or winter session classes. Class assignments will be determined by departmental need and based on the faculty member’s experience and expertise. These lecturer positions are non-tenure track, with renewable contracts and benefits, and provide the opportunity for advancement to senior and master lecturer. Must be available to teach five days a week. Faculty will be required to pursue service responsibilities as sought or assigned.

The successful candidates will join a thriving department with eleven full-time faculty and over 425 majors and minors. Our faculty pursues diverse scholarly and creative agendas including prestigious publications and internationally distributed media productions.
