POSITION SUMMARY:

CCA is seeking candidates for a full-time tenure-track Assistant Professor in the field of film history, theory, and criticism beginning in August 2015. The successful applicant will hold a Ph.D. in art history, film and media studies, ethnic studies, or visual studies. We seek a candidate with a global perspective, who has the potential to teach a two-semester history of film course every year, along with 200-level electives and 300-level seminars in her or his area of expertise, which may include: documentary film/media, experimental and avant-garde film, new media, narrative film, digital humanities, or emerging visual technologies. In keeping with CCA’s commitment to diversity, community engagement, and social justice, we seek candidates who cultivate an equitable scholarly environment and curriculum. With an increasingly international student body, candidates should have a proven track record of teaching and leading in a culturally-competent manner with a global perspective, working with diverse groups, and fostering an understanding of and respect for diverse cultural practices.

Course load is 5 courses per academic year (typically 2/3); active participation in program assessment/development and committee service is required. Successful candidates will also have the interest in teaching specifically in an art and design school context and across academic divisions.

PROGRAM SUMMARY:

CCA’s undergraduate program in Visual Studies offers students the academic strengths of a Humanities & Sciences curriculum within the studio environment of the college. Through its major/minor curriculum, as well as through general education requirements, the program trains students to contextualize, analyze, evaluate, and interpret imagery and objects of all kinds. Coursework covers the traditional fine arts of painting, sculpture, architecture, design, photography, and the graphic arts as well as television, film, commercial and journalistic imagery, zines, video, the web, and other artifacts of popular culture. Candidates may also have the opportunity to teach in the Master’s program in Visual and Critical Studies as well as the undergraduate and graduate programs in Film.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

PhD or equivalent terminal degree with expertise in film and/or media studies at the time of appointment
Evidence of professional activity, including publications in the history/theory of film
Proven track record of teaching and leading in a culturally-competent manner with a global perspective, preferably with experience working with diverse groups
Leadership potential, with strong communication skills and the flexibility to work across disciplines and to collaborate and develop relationships with other programs

Minimum Qualifications:

The successful candidate must be open to working in a non-traditional media studies program that includes a range of cross-disciplinary perspectives and modes of creative practice. Candidates must be open to working with students—both at the graduate and undergraduate levels—who are non traditional, often returning to college after spending time in the workforce (average age of our undergraduates is 28).

The dossier of the successful candidate will demonstrate a strong commitment to teaching as well as an outstanding record of creative and/or scholarly research activity. Situated in the Department of Art & Art History as part of Stanford's program in Film and Media Studies, the Master of Fine Arts Program in Documentary Film and Video provides a historical, theoretical, and critical framework within which students master the conceptual and practical skills for producing nonfiction film. The MFA degree prepares students for professional careers in video, and digital media and for teaching at the university level. Students are encouraged to develop their documentary voice within a context of artistic expression, formal exploration, and engagement with social issues. A dual emphasis on documentary production and film and media studies endows the student with breadth across these areas.

The successful candidate will teach at the graduate level in the MFA Program and at the undergraduate level in the Film and Media Studies program. Candidates will be required to teach a range of core courses in both documentary production and documentary studies. The production sequence is comprehensive in all areas, focusing on research, conceptualization, producing, directing, cinematography, sound, and editing of nonfiction media. The successful candidate will be expected to engage with the critical discourse surrounding contemporary documentary production, develop studies courses that build on the existing curriculum, and be conversant with new media practices and modes of distribution. The candidate will contribute to a department engaged in creative expression and critical thinking across disciplines and be encouraged to seek out synergies that may exist among colleagues across the university. PhD (preferred) or MFA is required along with demonstrated excellence in both college-level teaching and scholarly and/or artistic contributions to the field. Any word yet? Most of the Nov 1 deadline schools have gotten back to candidates. I wonder if they are dealing with the same hiring freeze that Salisbury has allegedly instituted (they are both part of the MD state system)

I spoke to a friend in a different dept. at Towson who is on a different hiring committee. Towson is under a freeze (apparently all Maryland state schools are) but some searches will go through and others won't. My friend's search is going forward but they have no guarantee as to whether or not they will actually get the funding to make an offer. I imagine most departments at Towson are in a similar situation.

The department emphasizes the theoretically informed analysis of film, television, video, new media, photography, sound technologies, and print in the context of modern and contemporary cultures. This scholar’s research should critically engage the technological and theoretical transformations of cinema and/or the media flows that are rapidly resituating all forms of media and social practices: from large scale co-productions to gaming, from consumer culture and imagined communities to geopolitics and war. We are interested in scholars challenging older conceptions of national culture, region, canon, and/or tradition. Possible research interests also include: the production and reception of one or more non-Western or Global South media and/or film practices, which could encompass texts, audiences and/or industries; the comparative/historical analysis of the relations between media and/or film formations and other cultural practices; and/or the history and theory of film in relation to new media in a global context.

The Fellow will offer one course each semester of the two-year appointment and will participate in an ongoing seminar, which he or she will help organize, at the Cogut Center for the Humanities.
