Amherst College, MA - Film & Video Artist - SEARCH COMPLETE

The Amherst College Department of Art and the History of Art invites applications for an open-rank position for a Film and Video Artist, with specialization in one or more of the following areas: experimental, documentary, and/or narrative film/video production; installation; animation; interactive technologies; and new media formats. An appointment at the Assistant, or, possibly, the Associate Professor rank, will be tenure track. Appointments at the rank of professor or, generally, associate professor will be with tenure. Appointments with tenure are contingent upon a tenure review.

We are seeking an artist with an M.F.A, at least three years teaching experience, and a significant record of distinguished artistic production. Candidates should be prepared to teach a range of courses (two in each semester), including team-taught fundamental courses in the major with a Critical Studies faculty member, as well as introductory film or video courses; advise honors students; and participate in the life of the college. This is a relatively new major at Amherst, so the successful candidate will oversee the instillation of a new film, video, and new media studio facility, as well as help build an inventory of camera, production equipment and the hardware and software necessary to the major. • This listing is almost exactly the same as a successful search from 2 years ago.  Is this a new position, or is their new hire moving on already?
• Tempe, AZ is in Maricopa County, which is Sherriff Arpaio territory. Eek!
• If I remember corectly, previous searches (two years in a row) were conducted out of the Film and Media component of ASU's Ehglish Dept, probably a better fit for Studies PhDs. My sense, fwiw, is that these hybrid production/studies searches are hugely problematic (MFAs and PhDs in same search pool).  Plus, they have Arpaio (^) and no water. Whatevs.
• The one from 2 years ago was in theater & film history at the Herberger Institute (I was interviewed so I remember it well :-) ).  The department is theater & film production, with film studies over in the English dept., which makes it an awkward fit for a film studies PhD.  I believe the person they hired through the last search was a theater PhD who also worked in film.

Brooklyn College, CUNY - TT Asst. Professor, Screenwriting

The Department of Film at Brooklyn College invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Screenwriting for fall 2014. Cleveland Institute of Art - Asst. Professor, Film Historian and Theorist - FIRST-ROUND INTERVIEWS HELD

The Liberal Arts Department at The Cleveland Institute of Art invites applications for an Assistant Professor position in the history and theory of film to the present. Research specialization is open, but we particularly welcome candidates who have a scholarly interest in the relation of film and video to contemporary art and multimedia practices, including installation and animation. A thorough knowledge of global currents and theories of film is essential, and those interested in teaching non-western film and video courses are encouraged to apply. Liberal Arts faculty are expected to teach upper-level undergraduate electives in their field of expertise, required courses in art history and/or visual culture and media arts, and contribute to the department’s Visual Culture Emphasis program. Cleveland is a film city, hosting an annual international film festival, and CIA operates the internationally acclaimed Cinematheque, which regularly screens films from all over the world. All full-time ranked faculty members are expected to participate in departmental and school-wide committees, curriculum development, advising of undergraduate students, and assessment of programs.

Connecticut College - TT Asst. Professor, Film Studies - CAMPUS INTERVIEWS SCHEDULED

The Film Studies program at Connecticut College invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor position in Film Studies beginning in August 2014. Required: Ph.D. in hand at time of appointment, a record of outstanding scholarly work, excellent teaching on a college level, and experience teaching introductory and advanced film theory and criticism courses. The person we hire will be responsible for teaching the program’s core courses, Film 101 and Film 202, as well as advanced courses in the candidate’s specialization. Applicants who specialize in all areas of film theory and criticism will be considered. The Film Studies Program recognizes the need to support and enhance our students’ media, visual, technology, and information literacies through the close textual analyses of a varied range of moving image representations and works. The School of Film & Photography at Montana State University-Bozeman seeks an energetic and broad-minded Assistant/Associate Professor of Digital Media Production with demonstrated abilities in both traditional production and digital/web/interactive media design. This person will have a special interest in science and natural history filmmaking/photography and the application of progressive media to this field of creative expression on the graduate degree level. 1. Ph.D. in Film Production, Film Studies, Science Communication, Digital Media, or a related field by start date. Related fields may include science and computer disciplines, if accompanied by extensive training or experience in film/video/photography production, digital media, and/or interactive media platform creation.

2. Demonstrated accomplishment in nonfiction filmmaking or photography, including traditional genres, professional science and natural history production, digital and web-based media, blended media, video games, or alternative nonfiction forms, including those that blur the boundaries between traditional fiction and nonfiction.

3. Demonstrated ability to develop and teach a range of courses related to science and natural history media production, digital and blended media creation, science communication, production ethics, and/or the history and theory of nonfiction and science-related media of all kinds.

4. Interest in and dedication to undergraduate instruction and graduate teaching at the MFA level.

5. Evidence of an on-going research agenda in digital media or interactive media design.

6. Evidence of successful college-level teaching experience.

7. Interest in interdisciplinary program development and innovative course delivery.

8. Interest in and evidence of potential for securing external grants and funding.

Preferred Qualifications

1. Owing to the breadth and integration of our programs, candidates who demonstrate as qualifications additional interest and expertise in one or more of the following areas will be given additional consideration:

• Professional digital media production for national or international outlets, web and digital delivery agencies, game creators, social media networks, and other for-profit and not-for-profit media organizations.

• Specialized work in digital or interactive media practice, mediated storytelling across platforms. Experience or research interest in dramatic narrative films and "hybrid" forms combining fiction and nonfiction narrative elements.

• Professional film/video science and natural history production experience for national and/or international media.

• Demonstrated record of successfully seeking external grants and funding, especially federal funding.

The Department of English at North Carolina State University seeks applications for a Tenure Track Assistant Professor position in the theory and/or history of film and/or moving images (including digital media). We seek candidates who can enrich and expand our current strengths in American and European cinema and who possess a strong record of scholarship and teaching. Areas of specialization are open, although we are particularly interested in candidates able to teach courses exploring the social, historical, and aesthetic aspects of cinema in a global moving image context.

Film faculty at NCSU teach a 2-2 load of both undergraduate and graduate (MA-level) courses. NCSU offers a film major, an English major with a film concentration, an MA in English with a film concentration, and a PhD in Communications, Rhetoric, and Digital Media (with which film faculty may choose to affiliate). Candidates are expected to maintain an active research and publication program and to participate in both professional and university service. In addition, there will be opportunities for leadership and program administration (with corresponding reductions in teaching load).

A growing Digital Humanities initiative at NCSU (part of a Triangle university consortium that includes Duke and UNC-Chapel Hill and is tied to the National Humanities Center) provides another avenue for research as well as leadership. The Triangle area boasts a rich film culture at the university, museum, as well as theatrical level. Film faculty regularly mentor student fellows for the Full Frame Documentary Festival that takes place every spring and are involved in the film culture of the Triangle. Film Studies has programs in Prague, Amsterdam, and London, where the successful candidate might elect to spend part of a summer teaching.

• I interviewed for the St. Olaf position last year, too! Can we have a reunion at MLA this year? :) I didn't make it to the final stage, but I was admittedly quite green. I got the impression there might have been some varying interests between the English and the communication committee members, and I was surprised an HR rep came too (luckily, I brought extra materials!), but overall, I found them very cordial, warm, and engaged. I didn't apply again this year -- you only get to break my heart once -- but best wishes to the applicants! Seems like a great place to work.

We seek an internationally recognized scholar and educator with the energy and vision to help shape a new interdisciplinary program in Film and Media Studies. The field of specialization is open, but the successful candidate will demonstrate a commitment to working with faculty and students across the curriculum and to fostering an interdisciplinary community of scholars and practitioners committed to promoting film and media literacy, research, and teaching. The Gittleman Professor will be appointed jointly in an appropriate home department and in the new Film and Media Studies program. Appointment will be at the rank of full Professor.

Responsibilities

•Lead an ongoing project to forge a new program in Film and Media Studies, encompassing our longstanding and vibrant Communications and Media Studies (CMS) program, which currently offers minors, internships, and extracurricular programming in Mass Communications and Media Studies, Film Studies, and Multimedia Arts;

•Help develop a new major in Film/Media Studies, with an emphasis on integrating film/media literacy, history, and practice;

•Provide intellectual and pedagogical leadership for the evolving program across departments;

•Teach new or existing courses in film/media studies;

•Support the university’s ongoing commitment to diversity, interdisciplinarity, internationalism, and active citizenship.

In addition to CMS, Tufts currently offers an interdisciplinary major in International Literary and Visual Studies, which makes possible the study of literature, film, and the visual arts in an international context. No knowledge of this but thanks for putting the word out on a possible insider hire. Kinda sucks as I just spent all day compiling application materials.

Since there are so many intervening factors in a job search, I'm generally reluctant to speculate about inside candidates, but in this case, the VAP is very strongly positioned to transition into a tenure line.

I AM a VAP someplace (not at Whitman) and let me tell you that places LOVE to pass over the VAPS for a juicier hire. Unless the VAP is sleeping with the chair or married to a tenure-track person already on the faculty, I really don't think that gives them much of an advantage if your qualifications are better or equal. (Believe me, I wish it did.) In fact, I often wonder if it isn't the VAPs themselves posting these "observations" in order to scare off competition.  Don't be afraid to apply!

University of Massachusetts - Boston - Posdoctoral Teaching Fellow in English (pref. Film Studies)

The UMass Boston English Department is offering one non-renewable Postdoctoral Teaching Fellowship of two years, beginning Fall 2014. The Teaching Fellow will receive guidance from a dedicated mentor in the development of a reflective pedagogy for teaching English Studies to the global student body of the 21st century. Responsibilities include: a 2+3 course load, participation in departmental pedagogy meetings, and one teaching presentation in the second year.

The Department of Comparative Literature is seeking a full-time Lecturer in cinema and media studies to begin in September 2014. The initial appointment will be for three years, and may be renewable.

The appointment is intended for a candidate whose teaching experience demonstrates an ability to engage productively with a range of topics, historical and theoretical, in cinema and media, especially those which examine minority ethnic, racial, and gender issues in cinema. We are also interested in candidates with demonstrated competence in working with films produced in languages other than English.

1/14/14: Is it me or are there fewer job postings this year? Or are there fewer candidates on the job market?

I've been on the Film Studies job market for several different cycles but it seems like this year either:

1. schools are taking a very long time to move onto first round interviews (either via phone/Skype or at MLA, NCA etc)

2. schools have moved forward bur no one is posting about it

There are jobs that had September due dates that have had no updates. Just wondering if anyone else has noticed this.

• I have assumed there's low participation this year from applicants. No one (myself included) has been reporting acknowledgments of apps received. So we're all sort of in the dark.

• Not sure about NCA, but for jobs with MLA interviews, I wouldn't expect much movement until mid-December, esp. since that conference is later in January than ever this year. As for everything else, the best way to get the reporting going is to add some info. yourself when you have it (even second-hand info. and things like acknowledgements are welcome). It's also still the case that many deadlines have yet to pass or just did pass rather recently [11/11]

[3/5/14]: I got an interview invitation for SCMS, and I was not planning on going to SCMS prior to this. Obviously, now my plans have changed.  If I am only attending SCMS for the interview, would I still need to register and pay the (ridiculously high) late registration fees? Any input would be appreciated as I am not familiar with conference protocol in such cases.

Don't pay the registration fee! When I interviewed at MLA as a non-MLAer I didn't pay registration. You really only need to register if you're presenting.

Congratulatoins for the interview. Don't pay. Job Interview is really not an official part of SCMS conference.
