  • Post advertised - and then cancelled - last year.
  • For the person who posted about the 10/17 additional material request -- did you submit your initial materials super early? Since they're obviously contacting people as they go through the apps, I'm wondering what the approximate turn-around time was between submission and hearing the first bit of interest. Thanks!
    • It was I; I had it in around the beginning of the month (was expediting applications in expectation of facing a busy time in late October -- this was a wise decision). So the turnaround was a few weeks -- surprisingly fast, really. Their email stated "The search committee has reviewed your application materials and decided to pursue your candidacy."
  • Were rejections received by mail or email?
  • Rejections via email; not that kind and pretty blunt (We're sorry that we don't have better news to deliver" or something along those lines. Also I would not like to fill out applicant info form after rejection email. Can't they time it better? :)
  • Received email notification that applications are undergoing "first stage of review" (11/7). (X3)
  • What are the specializations of people who have gotten through the first cut?
  • And are your PhDs in Film Studies, English, or something else?
  • PhD in English w/ research split fairly evenly between film and lit. (x3)
  • To those rejected on 12/12: had you received a request for additional materials?
  • No request for additional materials before the 12/12 rejection. (X2)
  • I had received a request for additional materials; received rejection on 12/14 (x3).
  • Has anyone received an invite to interview on campus?
  • They invited two candidates for job talks last week - no word since then, although it was unclear whether or not they would be inviting more from my correspondence with them...
  • Has anyone actually completed campus interviews or heard anything else from committee?
  • Someone accepted the position last week.
  • Any idea of the lucky person's area(s) of specialization?

NOTES:

They are inviting 2 new candidates for campus visits 1/21

Did the telephone interview request come with any indication that the first round of cuts was complete? (If this is the death knell for this job already, I'd like to know it.)

  • If you have to ask, I think you've got your answer. Sorry. (That's a rude response. This is supposed to be a non-judgmental space).
  • The applicant specifically said, "If this is the death knell for this job already, I'd like to know it." Since that person didn't have a problem with the response when it was published weeks ago, I'm assuming it wasn't taken in the wrong way. What's "rude" is inserting yourself into someone else's conversation and lecturing everybody else about the role of the wiki. Nobody ever claimed this was a "non-judgmental space," whatever that would mean. Its a space for the quick dissemination of (hopefully) accurate information for people who actually want to know the truth. (sorry, did you know the "truth"? Did you have "accurate information" about the first round of cuts? If so, then couldn't you have just said so? If not, then why even participate in this discussion? How about a gentle response like, "Sorry, I'm not sure about this position specifically, but generally speaking the phone interview stage indicates the first round is over." As for this being a non-judgmental space - um, why WOULDN'T it be?)
  • If I'd been "gentle" (wrapped it up with bows and teddy bears, taken you out to dinner and a long walk along the beach), you would then have criticized me for not knowing what I'm talking about and therefore not capable to speak about it in the first place. Anything you can think of to make the problem about some meanie on the internet and not about your own inadequacies as a candidate. And since it wasn't even directed towards you in the first place, I'm still not sure why anyone should care what you think. (And you still haven't defined what "non-judgmental space" even means, which was my point--does it mean that no one is allowed to hurt your feelings, even unintentionally? It seems like you have pretty thin skin, since you get personally offended by things that don't even concern you, so that doesn't seem realistic).
  • In addition to being rude, the above response is very possibly wrong. SCs very often run through their stacks of applications in batches. Please, please, please, whoever you are: don't make this process harder than it has to be.
  • Obviously, its not wrong, as the information below, published weeks ago and so far not refuted, has already indicated. Also, I'm not sure how you define "harder." As someone on the job market, I would define "mak[ing] this process harder" as months of petty self-delusion: that I'm didn't get an interview because people are "rude," or that your materials were lost somewhere because you never got a confirmation, or that you are still in the running because the chair never bothered to tell you personally otherwise, or that there must be an inside candidate, or that the SC is still working through the applicant list, or that, yes, they are doing campus interviews, but those probably will fall through and then they'll go back to the list, etc., etc., etc. Any of those issues, and others, happens, but you are only make life harder on yourself if you get hung up on improbabilities in favor of accepting the most likely explanation, and moving forward to the future opportunities you can still influence.
  • Yes, they have cut it down to 10 candidates from over 200 applicants.
  • Hee-hee, it's amazing how fast arguments can escalate on this kind of site. I'm the one who posted the original "death knell" question, and I'll just say that while I wasn't offended or bothered by the "if you have to ask" comment, I also wasn't helped by it, since the truth is that there are some cases where your chances are over as soon as the first round of people are asked for more materials and/or interviews (which turned out to be true here) and some cases where the SC expresses their initial interest in candidates on a rolling basis. And it's usually clear from the way the initial interest email is worded which of those scenarios is going on, which is why I asked. But it was definitely helpful to hear the "10 candidates out of 200" comment, since that does indeed seem to signify the end of the road for me. I prefer to get my rejection as soon as possible, so I can mentally move on!
  • I'm the original responder to your comment. Yes, its about that time of year where people start to take their own frustrations out of others, as though trolling for fights with random strangers will improve their own job prospects. I agree that the "10 candidates out of 200" is far more useful and had I known someone would post that later (presumably in response to me), I wouldn't have posted the first comment. But such specific and timely info is rare on the wiki these days, and getting rarer since there's such a negative backlash to honest info at times (by both frustrated SCs and angry rejected candidates). I apologize if my comment translated as flippant. But you sounded like you really needed to know. I was genuinely sorry, as I indicated, and can certainly sympathize having been passed over myself.
    • Wow, not to add to the drama that this job posting has created - but, the search has been re-opened. I just had a phone interview with the committee today (and this was after recieving an official rejection last fall) - If anyone has further updates, it would be great to see them posted here... - oh, and today is 2/24/12.

NOTES:

Does anyone else recall there being a similar-sounding Columbia job last year? Anyone know if that one was filled?

A: Yes it was. It looks like the program is growing.

There are rumors that this job may be intended for a current post-doc already at Columbia.

As in, a job for Nico Baumbach, perhaps?

That rumor seems a little strange. How could a potential Associate-level job be suitable for a post-doc? Wouldn't they make it an entry-level gig if they had a candidate in mind?

Is this job intended as a replacement for Annette Insdorf, is she retiring?

01/09: Has anyone been contacted yet? NOT YET...

01/23: Have multiple interviews been scheduled? Haven't received a rejection yet, not sure whether to remain hopeful or to presume the first selections have already been made... x2 Has anyone else been contacted for an interview?

03/14: Would those selected for interviews please reveal your area(s) of specialization and asst/assoc standing?

05/02: So who's the lucky soul who got the job?

NOTES:

This ad has a fishy smell. For one thing, there is no required experience or training as a media archivist. That seems odd for such a position. Now compare the ad with their VAP’s CV (she focuses on “Archival Theory & Practice”). HOLY INSIDER, Batman! This is taken exactly from her bio. Perhaps they could be less obvious next time, or just put her name on it and deliver it on a silver platter.

AFAIK, they just started their archive and this VAP was asked to help with it. It seems to me that archival theory is a secondary interest of that VAP.

(OP) What “secondary interest”? Her dissertation is on archival theory and titled accordingly. The rest of her CV matches up exactly with the specific requirements of the ad.

I don't see what's fishy about it. I appreciate that it's specific enough for most people not to waste their time.

Apparently they already have their 3 finalists for interviews in January...indeed this seems like an inside job

The VAP in question accepted the job at the University of Alberta so it's now an open field for the three finalists.

General Discussion[]

-- Wow, very organized this year, I'm impressed!

- Has anyone been given an indication as to what the prospect may be this year? Better/worse/same as last year?

-- Has anyone heard anything about the film job posted at Indiana U/Purdue U Indianapolis (IUPUI)? I don't want to add it to the list since the deadline was Nov. 21 but I would be interested if anyone has any news!

--Skype interviews started last Friday (12/9) at IUPUI and are continuing on until this Friday (12/16).

--I've heard IUPUI has sceduled campus visits. IUPUI - OFFER MADE AND ACCEPTED (2/13)

--Unceremonious rejection received today (12/13): "Your dossier is not among those moving forward in the search." (Yeah, chair had his secretary send out form rejection letters to the semi-finalists not invited to campus interviews! 12/27 What can you do?) (x2)

-- Sorry, I am new to the wiki but wanted to inquire about two jobs whose deadlines have also passed: Georgia State and University of South Carolina. Anybody have any info?

-- USC had phone interviews this week (12/12).

-- Two more: any word from Ringling College (Florida) or Arizona State (film and theater history position)? Thanks!

  • FYI: ASU position posted on Theatre page. No movement noted there yet.

-- Sorry to add more, but has anyone heard from University of Texas at Dallas? Not posted anywhere and deadline was December 1st. Thank you! (12/20) I'd be interested in hearing any news on this one as well! (12/21) I got a request for letters of recommendation from them Monday (1/23); anyone else hear anything? Has there been any further news? (2/2) - Skype interviews scheduled for next week (2/4)

I've gotten two rejections today alone (several on other days) from schools to which I did not apply. Is this normal?

-- Anyone know anything about Eckerd College's Christian Nielsen Endowed Professorship in Film Studies? (Not listed anywhere here, but the announcement was posted at the SCMS website...)

  • Eckerd did preliminary Skype interviews some time ago and are currently involved in campus visits. (1/26)
  • Any one know if an offer's been made yet? (2/7) - OFFER MADE & ACCEPTED 2/21

-- Ithaca College? Any news there? It was a late posting but apps were due Feb. 10.

  • I got an email from Ithaca College saying I was short-listed and asking for syllabi and writing sample Feb 24, to be sent by 1 March for hiring committee deliberations to start 2 March. This was sent by the assistant to the Dean, who said that future communications would be directly from the committee--so the "short list" sounds like it might be, in fact, fairly long. . . .(x2)
  • Would be interested to hear from anyone who has had a campus interview scheduled for this position (as stated above)--as I just got a request for a phone interview 9 March. Are they going through applicants in batches?

NOTE: Ithaca College now posted above (3/9).
