Wofford College (USA:SC)

  • Tenure-track Assistant Professorship in early European History, to begin fall 2021
  • Deadline 15 Oct. 2020
  • Teaching Load 3-1-3 "The 1 indicates the January “Interim” term, during which professors may travel with students or teach on a variety of topics using experiential teaching methods."
  • The successful applicant will teach classes in the history of Ancient Rome, Ancient Greece, as well as a third basic field, preferably non-European (such as the history of Ancient Egypt or Ancient Persia)
  • [Nov 11]: Anyone heard about interviews?
  • Typically, it takes at least a month from closing date for word to go out. That just happened today (15 Nov). But, considering how bad the job market is and that this job, no doubt, also has nearly every Classicist and Medievalist applying since their respective fields are even drier than Ancient, I would suspect that they have close to 300-350 applications. ...normal year jobs see between 200-220 for most Ancient jobs in a History Depts., expect those numbers to be much, much higher; lag in between news to be much, much longer; and the competition to be extreme. ...fingers crossed for us all.
  • [Nov. 18] email request for Zoom interview
  • Well, can cross that one off the list, I guess.
  • [Dec. 8] email request for Zoom 'campus visit' and 2nd interview
  • [Feb 9] Job accepted - Jessica Tomkins (Brown / Oglethorpe University)

University of Leicester (UK:Eng)

  • Lecturer (~tenured asst/assoc prof) in Ancient History, to begin Jan 2021
  • Informal enquiries can be directed to Dr Huw Barton, Head of School, by email at hjb15@le.ac.uk
  • Deadline: 4 Nov. 2020
  • Is the January start with an early November deadline odd to anyone? Not much time to secure new accommodations, prep for courses (even online), etc.
  • [22 Oct] I'd say not; jobs in the UK often have relatively short periods between interview and start date, at least compared to hiring practices in the USA. Likely the Jan start will also be negotiable, it should be read as 'ideal' rather than fixed (many UK academics will have a 3 month notice period to work out so would not be able to fulfil this requirement).
  • [10 Nov] Email request for interview

  • Hey everyone! Sorry to jump in here but I am from the Geography page and we have been having similar issues with SUNY Oneonta. They advertised for two different geography positions, but have only been moving forward with interviews, etc. for one of them. The department has not responded to any inquires from us and HR has told some of us that are applications are no longer being considered but the rest of us have not heard anything from the search committee. Seems like the unprofessional elements of these searches are campus wide. It's almost freaking May and they want the positions to start in August? Crazy....
  • Please don't apologize, I agree completely. This has been a very opaque process even for academia.

  • Just curious whether anyone has heard anything ? I know it's only recently closed but if they've been reviewing applications since it posted one would imagine they'd have a shortlist drawn up rather quickly... [23 Feb]
    • Agreed - nothing here yet [25 Feb]
    • [12 Mar]- Any updates?
    • [11 Mar] no updates
    • (20 Mar) Was it just me or was there an update on here last week with someone posting about an initial interview invitation? I remember experiencing a 'oh well another one bites the dust' moment, but now that update seems to have been deleted. Whats going on?
      • Yes, it looked like someone thought it would be fun to delete my update that an initial Zoom interview was requested last week. As for giving up hope, some things I've seen on the wiki have made me think that some unis aren't making all the requests for initial zooms at the same time, meaning that they are doing sort of a rolling interviewing process. I don't know if that helps or not, because I personally like to do as you do, just cross things off the list once someone announces that they got an interview.
      • Thank you for the clarification! I just like to be realistic about my chances. I haven't had an experience yet where I have heard back from a school after someone has posted an update about an initial interview. For my own peace of mind, I like to cross things off the list once someone posts an update. It helps not to have unrealistic expectations. If you are the one who got the invitation for the first round interview, good luck! I hope it works out for you!
      • Thank you, though I think that ship has sailed for me now, too. It's a tough market out there. Good luck to you!
