Princeton University (USA:NJ) - Europe and the World, 1500s - ca. 1900[]

[26 Jul] The highered link seems to have stopped working so I have replaced it with the direct link to Princeton's hiring page

  • Assistant professorship in the History of Europe, to begin 1 Sept. 2020
  • The Department of History at Princeton University invites applications from scholars who specialize in the history of Europe - and Europe's relations with the rest of the world - from the 16th century to c.1900. We particularly encourage applications from candidates whose work will complement rather than duplicate the department's existing strength in British, Central European, and pre-1815 French history. We are also especially interested in specialists in Southern or Northern Europe.
  • Applicants should provide a detailed letter of application, curriculum vitae, and a two page dissertation or book abstract. Applicants should also provide contact information for at least three referees as part of the online recommendation process.
  • Please apply online at https://www.princeton.edu/acad-positions/position/12741.
  • Review begins 7 Oct 2019, but applications will be considered until the department chooses to close the search.
    • Applied 7 Oct
    • Does anyone know if their recommenders were automatically sent requests for LOR or if the LOR requests come in at a later stage of consideration? (I provided the names/emails as per the directions). Thanks!
    • Hi! My recommenders reported getting an e-mail once I'd submitted the application, so it seems to have been automatic.
    • Mine seem to have gotten email requests a few days later for what it's worth.
    • Mine received an email request a few days after I applied from Judith Hanson, the Department Manager. Did you receive the same email?
    • I don't know who sent the one my recommenders got but it didn't seem entirely automatic because of the delay. But based on the Princeton application system (which said recommenders may or may not hear after submission) my sense is it's possible the department opted into collecting letters so maybe they pushed a button after the deadline to send these requests out. Tl;dr may mean something, may not!
    • I got an email on 10/14 from one of my LOR writers saying "congrats on making it to second round at Princeton!" after they received a rec request. The next day I got another email from another LOR writer reprimanding me for not reading the application system thoroughly enough, meaning they believed the request to be automatically sent. So, who knows what it all means...except that it's Princeton, and none of us realistically is getting this job no matter how many times we check this board! Bonne chance!
    • Not to read into this more but since there's nothing else to do while we wait...when did your first LOR writer receive a letter requests? Mine were on a different date than 10/14, which could tell us something...
    • So, I applied on the 6th of October and on the 11th Judith Hanson sent to one of my referee (and later on to my other two referees) an email asking for a rec letter. One of my colleagues gradueted from Princeton and he assured me that they would have not sent any email if they were not interested. In any case, it was not an email sent automatically. This is all I know. Rec letters were sent but I did not hear anything after that.
    • Very interesting. To add one data point, I applied on the 7th and requests to multiple LOR writers came on the 10th. But another question is...has anyone not (yet) gotten one of these requests?
    • My Princeton alum recommendor also received a request, but not my other recommenders.
  • [Nov. 21] Any other contact beyond letters?
  • The committee solicited materials from its "long shortlist" in early November and is currently reviewing them. Interviews with selected candidates from that list will occur in December.
  • I guess the interview invites have gone out?
  • Confirmed [Dec. 4] that first-round interview invites have gone out.
  • Received rejection letter Dec. 3
  • Any news about campus visits?
    • Nothing here [Dec. 17]

  • For full consideration, completed applications and supporting materials must be received no later than 15 Jan 2020.
  • I noticed both the college employment website and interfolio have a January 15th, 2020, application deadline. Was the December 15th, 2019, deadline in another location? Thanks! [6 Dec - I've edited, I can't find the Dec. date in any publications so assume it was an error AFII (talk) 09:39, December 6, 2019 (UTC)]
  • 3 January: Skype interview request (x3)
    • How come they're already interviewing if the deadline is January 15???
      • Sounds like they were interested in some of the applicants who put in by Dec. 15 and those people now potentially have an advantage.
  • 10 January: Interfolio application went from complete and submitted to incomplete and submitted. Anyone else experience this?
    • Same thing happened to me. Thanks for the heads up as I wouldn't have checked otherwise. I think they just want contact information for references (as three different uploads?), not reference letters.
      • It seemed as if the requirement changed from reference letters to contact info just a few days ago. Maybe they were being overwhelmed with materials or wanted to encourage more people to apply?
  • Any updates since the first round of interviews? Was there a second round of Skype interviews after the January deadline passed?
  • [Mar 3] Any word?
  • [Mar 6] Offer accepted (made on Mar 2)
  • Congrats!

University of Maryland - Baltimore County (USA:MD) - Continental Europe[]

  • Tenure-track Assistant Professor of the modern history of continental Europe who can contribute to our focus on global, comparative, and transnational history. Modern continental defined as the 19th-20th centuries, including Russia and the former USSR, but excluding Britain.
  • We seek someone with a Ph.D. in History, and welcome especially scholars who work on ethnicity, migration, and community; war and society; science and the environment; or projects that link continental Europe with global movements. We are also interested in those who engage in public and public-facing history.
  • Submit a letter of application, CV, statement of commitment to diversity and inclusiveness, statement of teaching philosophy, copies of publications and/or a writing sample, up to two relevant course syllabi, and names and addresses of three current references by Oct. 15, 2019 to Interfolio 65873.
    • Applied
    • Request for additional materials [Nov. 7] x 4
      • May I ask what else did they ask for? Just letters?
        • They asked for letters and that I doublecheck that the diversity statement and CV had been attached to the original application (mine had been so I assume this was a mass e-mail).
        • Does this mean that people are being selected for the next round of the application process even though they did not even bother to turn their original applications in correctly?
        • I am a fellow applicant so I do not know for sure, but I would assume that the search committee is allowing those who did not send in all of their documents to do so now. Interfolio can be tricky to figure out sometimes, so they are probably giving applicants a second chance to submit everything. It is still pretty early from the submission date for them to have already narrowed the applicant pool. But once again, I do not have inside information, just some experience on the job market.
    • Interview request [Dec. 4] x2
    • Campus visit invites have gone out [Dec. 20]
      • Anyone else?
    • [13 Jan] Very kind, if seemingly form/standard, rejection email
      • Did anyone else receive neither a rejection nor an invite to campus?
        • FWIW, while my rejection only came yesterday I was not interviewed. If you were interviewed and haven't heard anything it's possible you're on an alternate list.
        • Yeah, I suspect this is a possibility. Just wondering if anyone else is in the same boat/if a second person can confirm being invited to campus. Unfortunately, not all reports of interview invitations/rejects/etc. are accurate on the wiki.
  • Mod note: Despite requests to use the Talk page for further discussion, more posts were added here, so I've moved the whole thing beyond this point to the Talk page. There is a Talk page for every wiki page - if the discussion is getting extended and/or is becoming general rather than focused on a particular posting, please take it over there. Thanks AFII (talk) 13:51, December 3, 2019 (UTC)
