• The prospective Professor of Ancient History will be a historian, trained in the discipline of ancient history, who has a methodologically and/or geographically innovative research and education agenda. Area of expertise: the Classical period of Greek and Roman history (500 BCE-300 CE), preferably with a focus on transregional aspects such as the relations between the Mediterranean world and the Near East, Western Asia and/or North Africa.

• Fixed term (36 month) Teaching Fellow in Roman History, to begin 1 Sept. 2020
• Teaching Load: To convene the following BA level modules: The Roman Republic c.350 BC – 44 BC (HIST0156) The course, covering a chronological range of approximately three centuries, aims to study Rome from its emergence as a leading city-state in Italy to the eventual decline of its republican system. This ‘Survey’ BA module is taught over terms one and two in a weekly one hour lecture format (up to 60 students) with weekly tutorial classes of 15. Assessment is by three hour unseen examination and a 2,500 word essay; Roman Democracy: Myth or Reality (HIST0015) Was the late Roman Republic a democracy? This course examines this controversial question by investigating Roman politics through the lens of classical political theory, applying ideas about liberty, citizenship, equality, and form of government to the real political practices of the Romans of the first century BC. This ‘Thematic’ BA module is taught over terms one and two in a weekly two hour seminar format (two groups, each of 15 students). Assessment is by three hour unseen examination and two 2,500 word essays; An ‘Advanced’ seminar module The ‘Advanced’ seminar module is taught in a weekly two-hour seminar format, in the second term (one group, 15 students). The ‘Advanced’ module to be taught by the post holder will be agreed between the post holder and the Head of Department following appointment. The ‘Advanced’ module is assessed by two 2,500 word essays; To convene the following MA module: Propaganda and Ideology in Rome (HIST0414/HIST0436) The aim of this course is to analyse the role played by political ideas in the Roman Republic and early Principate. Beginning with the study of concepts such a Fides, Virtus, and Honos (Trust, Virtue, and Honour) that are first attested in Rome in the third century BC as deities, the course will proceed by analysing other values such as Concordia and Libertas (Concord and Liberty) that, although originally attested according to our literary tradition in the early Republic, also play an essential role throughout the Republic and in the writing of Roman thinkers of the first century BC. This MA module will be taught in term one in a weekly two hour seminar format (one group of 12 students). Assessment is by essay (4000 word essay/5000 word essay).

  • Hi! My recommenders reported getting an e-mail once I'd submitted the application, so it seems to have been automatic.

  • Mine received an email request a few days after I applied from Judith Hanson, the Department Manager. Did you receive the same email? 
  • I don't know who sent the one my recommenders got but it didn't seem entirely automatic because of the delay. But based on the Princeton application system (which said recommenders may or may not hear after submission) my sense is it's possible the department opted into collecting letters so maybe they pushed a button after the deadline to send these requests out. Tl;dr may mean something, may not! 
  • I got an email on 10/14 from one of my LOR writers saying "congrats on making it to second round at Princeton!" after they received a rec request. The next day I got another email from another LOR writer reprimanding me for not reading the application system thoroughly enough, meaning they believed the request to be automatically sent.   • So, I applied on the 6th of October and on the 11th Judith Hanson sent to one of my referee (and later on to my other two referees) an email asking for a rec letter. One of my colleagues gradueted from Princeton and he assured me that they would have not sent any email if they were not interested. In any case, it was not an email sent automatically. This is all I know. Rec letters were sent but I did not hear anything after that.

      • They asked for letters and that I doublecheck that the diversity statement and CV had been attached to the original application (mine had been so I assume this was a mass e-mail).

      • I am a fellow applicant so I do not know for sure, but I would assume that the search committee is allowing those who did not send in all of their documents to do so now. Interfolio can be tricky to figure out sometimes, so they are probably giving applicants a second chance to submit everything. It is still pretty early from the submission date for them to have already narrowed the applicant pool. But once again, I do not have inside information, just some experience on the job market.

If it is true and they only put together a more general description to boost up the number of applicants for whatever reason (most likely to make themselves look better for the university administration), it is unethical at best.

• The successful candidate must be fluent in Russian. Additionally, this position will support our Russia-focused study abroad programs. Primary teaching responsibilities will be on the Dahlonega Campus.
• Teaching Load: 4/4 teaching survey courses and upper division courses in area(s) of specialization. & Teach one history course per year in Russian language. The candidate will also be Responsible for contributing to the department’s MA program ·
