  • The deadline for applications is  8 Dec. 2015.
    • Just FYI -- Siena Heights works on a trimester system. The teaching load is 4/4/4 (12 courses per year) [Just wondering on what grounds this statement was made? Nothing on their site seems to imply anything about any faculty teaching 4/4/4, which seem absurd for such a small university. I'm wondering if this is just another strategy of some wiki-troll trying to dissuade others from a position in hopes of increasing his/her chances of getting an interview.]
    • Did some digging in response to comment above; seems Siena Heights is on a semester system (fall/winter semesters) but they have a v. small faculty and as far as I can tell, only one tenured person in the history department, and she is teaching three courses this fall. So I think the load is at least 3/3, which is definitely not 4/4/4, but definitely it's a teaching heavy job at a school that serves a v. non-traditional student body.
    • 11 Dec. Email request for further information (regarding the university's mission statement). x5
    • Feb 1. Skype interview request; said that there will be 11 interviewed at this stage.
    • Feb. 2: Request for a Skype interview via phone message. (x2)

San Jose State University (USA:CA) - Early Modern European and World History[]

  • Tenure track assistant professorship in Early Modern European & World History
  • San Jose State University seeks a tenure-track assistant professor whose research specialty is in late medieval or early modern European history with the ability to make connections between emerging European nation states and the cultures of Asia and Africa between 1000 and 1800
  • Candidates should be able to teach comparative upper-division undergraduate courses, topical courses in World History and European History at the graduate level in their areas of expertise, and occasional lower-division surveys.
  • Ph.D. in History and teaching experience are required
  • For full consideration upload a letter of application, curriculum vitae, statement of teaching interests/philosophy, research plans, and at least three original letters of reference with contact information ... at http://apply.interfolio.com/32230. Contact Dr. Mary Pickering, Search Committee Chair, Mary.Pickering@sjsu.edu with questions
  • Deadline: 20 Nov. 2015.
  • Also posted at World/Global/Transnational History 2015-16
  • Does anyone know what they mean by "original letters of reference"? Since this is through Interfolio, they obviously don't mean hard copies or something similar. Does this mean that signed, confidential (already uploaded to Interfolio) letters that aren't specifically addressed to this search committee won't be accepted?
  • In this context, "original" means a letter of reference written for a recent academic job search (as opposed to a letter written for some other purpose).
  • I exchanged emails with Mary Pickering (the chair of the search committee) today. She states that one must already have completed the PhD prior to applying. They will not review applications from doctoral candidates.
  • [6 Dec] request via email for AHA interview x3
  • [5 February] Request via email for campus interview.
  • Offer extended and accepted.
  • [27 May] Received a rejection email, seven months after the deadline. The successful candidate specialises in Celtic studies. So much for a "research specialty" with "connections between emerging European nation states and the cultures of Asia and Africa between 1000 and 1800"!

  • The department is interested in candidates who focus on the history of western or central Europe during the period 1450-1700.
  • Candidates must possess a Ph.D. (or provide solid indication of imminent completion), and they should provide evidence of excellence in research, as demonstrated by their published contributions or by potential contributions to the scholarship of their field.
  • The successful candidate will be expected to teach a 12-credit (2-2) load, and thus a strong commitment to teaching excellence at the undergraduate as well as graduate level also is required.
  • In addition to offering courses within his or her area of specialization, the successful candidate will have the opportunity to contribute to the university’s interdisciplinary undergraduate program teaching lower division courses in European history, 1500 to the present and/or the global history of the period, 1500-1900. For further information on the academic programs of the UBC History Department, candidates should visit the departmental website, http://www.history.ubc.ca, as well as its page on “Research Clusters,” http://www.history.ubc.ca/clusters/thematic.
  • Applicants must apply only through the UBC faculty careers website, http://facultycareers.ubc.ca/21104 and they must upload (in the following order, and not exceeding 12 megabytes per attachment): a cover letter or letter of application, a curriculum vitae, a summary of current and future research interests, no more than three samples of their written scholarship, and evidence of teaching effectiveness. Only completed applications will be considered by the search committee; in this matter, there can be no exceptions. The applicants also should arrange to have three confidential letters of reference sent by email to Ms. Janet Mui, the coordinator of the search, at hist.recruitment@ubc.ca. Alternatively, the letters of reference may be mailed to: Ms. Janet Mui, Early Modern European History Search, Department of History, University of British Columbia, #1297-1873 East Mall, Vancouver, BC V6T 1Z1, Canada. Questions may be directed to the chair of the search committee, Prof. Daniel Vickers, daniel.vickers@ubc.ca.
  • Deadline: 1 Oct. 2015.
  • I assume this is the same job that was posted last year. Does anyone know if those applications are still considered active? When they cancelled the search, they said that there was no need to reapply, but it's not mentioned here.
  • I applied last year, and the email I received about the postponement said they would keep everything on file; repeat applicants only need to send a new cover letter and cv. And new letters of recommendation only if you think they ought to be redone. Probably worth checking with the dept. to be sure, and perhaps making a relevant reference in the letter.
  • Any news on this one?
  • I had thought they would have taken advantage of having a load of eligible candidates in town for SCSC last weekend .... I guess not?
  • [4 Nov] I just finished communicating with Danny Vickers, the chair of the search committee. I have another offer, so I wanted to know what their timeline is. He was very coy. But he said that it is official Departmental policy not to inform rejected candidates of their status. No one will be receiving emails except the final candidates. I have no idea if they have been chosen yet.
  • Good to know! That means we're relying on successful candidates posting their news here!
  • They have.
  • ^^They have what? And how do you know?
  • I expect it means "They have now!"
  • So UBC History is in the news here in Canada today. I wonder if this is why they cancelled last year's search.
  • I don't know anything about UBC's slow response to sexual assaults. But I do know they have been incredibly slow at getting back to candidates about this job (two years in a row now). They really couldn't care less about doing things the right way.
  • Just so you know, this is not "incredibly slow." Many US schools are only now reviewing their files and deciding on AHA interviews. Canadian schools (such as this one) operate on a different hiring schedule. They tend not to use major conferences such as AHA for preliminary interviews, but rather go straight to bringing candidates to campus in January or February. Thus this doesn't seem like a slow search to me.
  • Just so you know, you are wrong. The due date for this was two months go. I have already finished my first round of interviews (or received rejection notices) for all of my Oct. 1 applications. This search has been going on for two years. So yeah, it is pretty slow.
  • They held interviews in November.
  • Offer made and accepted.
  • Sounds right. Just got rejection email. 130 applicants.
  • At least it was a successful search, so we can as a community at least be happy for that. Congrats to the new hire
  • Any knowledge of the profile of the new hire?

  • Hey, a job's a job. But this isn't a very good one. 4/3 without possibility of tenure. Yet they demand PhD in hand 8 months before the job actually starts. Seems excessive.
  • Yeah, the same requirement on the Holocaust/genocide job below kind of screwed me over because I'm defending on the 29th of January. I have no idea why they want everything done by the review date, rather than just stipulating that you need to have your Ph.D. in hand by the start date like pretty much everyone else. Oh well.
  • Department chair here (Dec 12): please note that the H-Net ad has been edited and not by us. Applications require letters of reference. Also, the weblink to the job portal has been removed from the H-Net ad. Please see above for the link to the job portal. We are working on getting the ad fixed but this won't be for a few days. Apologies for any inconvenience and/or confusion.
  • Hi Department Chair. You should make this a t-t job.

  • folks applying to this job should probably keep an eye on the currently changing status of UW tenure system
  • Unless it's taken a turn recently, the only alteration so far has been to write tenure requirements out of state law. It's unfortunate and pointless that this was done, to be sure, but thus far there's been no actual attack on the institution of tenure in the UW system. That may change - the door is now open, at least - but I wouldn't consider it a live issue for now.
  • [14 Dec] request for preliminary skype interview received  x3
  • [26 Jan] Request for an on campus interview. x2

  • [12 Feb] Has anyone else heard anything? I had a skype interview and at the time the committee mentioned that they would try to bring in people mid-February for campus interviews.
  • [12 Feb] Had an on-campus interview yesterday and today. From what I understand there are three finalists with a decision coming on the position in late February or early March.
  • [3 March] Any word of an offer on this one?
  • [7 March] Offer extended and accepted. In keeping with tradition: I'm a seventeenth-century France specialist, currently a VAP. FWIW, they emphasized how competitive the field was, and I got the sense the candidates made the decision hard for the committee.
  • Congrats to the new hire.

  • It looks like a a tailored post for one of the visiting professors there. Her areas of specialization and syllabi seem to indicate that they want to hire her but had to open the position anyway. Don't know hos open the position really is
  • I don't know hos either. But this sentiment does sum up my attitude to the job market this year. x 2
  • Is this information about the VAP really necessary? I was offered a job once that was "'tailor made" for a VAP. You have no idea what they are doing.
  • How could such a broad search possibly be tailor made for anyone? This kind of paranoia doesn't help anyone. The job market is not fixed so as to waste applicants' time, even though it does feel that way.
  • [1 Dec]: has anybody heard anything at all?
  • [2 Dec] Request for blood sample
  • I heard they had a VAP with blood type AB+, so unless you've got the same blood type, it's probably not worth applying.

  • I received neither the intervew request nor the rejection letter.  Anyone else in a similar limbo?

  • I got the same form request and I have already received my PhD. My guess is this is a second-round of sorts, with those who heard nothing probably being kept in suspense until the committee makes up its mind about those whose materials they've seen.  But certainly we are all speculating here.
  • did all applicants get this interfolio link or was this a second round cut?
  • [19 Oct]: Received rejection email from Interfolio (x2)
  • [20 Oct]: I'm confused because I've received neither a rejection nor a request for written work (but I'm positive my application was in on time via Interfolio). Maybe they're doing this in several rounds? x 5
  • see discussion above
  • Anybody hear anything else about this one?
  • [24 Nov] Rejection email received. (x2)
  • [Nov. 24] Invitation to interview via Skype
