• Such a wide open search and it only took a week, sounds fishy!
• I know someone who got an interview invitation and I can assure you that s/he has no connections at all to the university, if that is what is being implied here (they are probably moving fast because it is already mid-April and presumably they have classes that need to be staffed and contracts that need to be signed?)

• I believe their Habsburg historian is retiring.
• I'm still confused, because, though he is of retiring age, he seems to do even more Eastern Europe than he does Central Europe. If he is retiring, it means they have no one to cover Eastern Europe, making it puzzling that they would put out a Central Europe job call rather than a Central/Eastern Europe--or simply Eastern Europe.  Makes me wonder if it really is him.  They also say it is a prospective opening.  hmmm....

• I haven't heard anything yet, but it's still very early! I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't send out AHA interview requests till December.
• From the how many there were standpoint, you won't be happy: I learned from HR that by mid-day on 1 Nov they'd had 210 applicants. --> Wow, thanks for info. As for interviews, I would hope they'd  give interviewees who are not otherwise attending a little more notice than that to book tickets and hotels, alas...

• If feeling generous would you mind saying what field and period you study? And on a different note, I find it surprising (suspicious?) that the search committee read 210 (based on the figure above) applications, met, and deliberated in 10 days to narrow a list of phone candidates. 
• The person who stated a request for phone interview may have posted to the wrong position.  Spoke with HR - 230 applicants total, still under review, no decisions made, unclear if they will perform phone interviews at all

• Apparently, the phone interviews were a way to narrow down the pool for the AHA interviews. They are still planning to interview at AHA.

• I've heard nothingl, but see Universities to fear if you get on on campus.
• Posted this on Universities to fear but it isn’t showing up anymore (deleted?). Interviewed with them in 2013 and was asked if I was married and "how many" kids I had.  Then if I wanted to have kids.  (I guess employment laws don't apply at Sam Houston) During my job talk one professor stood for half the talk and then stomped out. In the second job talk (made me give two that day) one of the professors read his mail and another was asleep.  Later, I overheard two male professors saying that I was "easy on the eyes" and commenting on my legs while one of them did some sleazy impersonation. <--this post is also still available on Universities to fear (see "Current Issues" section) [1/26].

• This entry says it is a tenure track position, but the job ad doesn't indicate that it is.  I interviewed there previously and the committee said that the school does not have tenure and instead uses a serious of one-year and multi-year contracts.

Such indirect policy is, alas, still undertaken by some schools.
• Exactly. No SC that has reviewed what are likely to have been 200+ applications is going to need to go past the ten on their shortlist. It was a very nice email, and I honestly got the impression that the SC was trying to be reassuring in a lousy market, but once it was clear that some were getting invitations and the others consolation that was, ultimately, it. "Though you are no longer under consideration, we appreciate your applying and wish you the best of luck" would be far kinder in the long run. (+1)
• I actually think there was so much selfishness and improper arrogance in that email. Consider the following sentence 'being on this committee has just been so humbling, to see these type of qualifications on nearly every c.v'. Are they trying to reassure us that we are more talented, even though we are jobless, while they perform worse, even though they are tenured, and that this situation is now a status quo? Why on earth would anyone say that phrase? This is a typical example of their inability to achieve any degree of sympathy (let alone, emphathy) with our generation of young 'disinherited' scholars.  
• I agree with the comments above, but I will add that I thought it was very considerate of the committee to  update the candidates on the status of the search in a timely manner. At least now I can cross this off my list and move on.

• Sorry, but, move on, they've got their list. I don't see anything at all shady about this search. The early deadline made it abundantly clear what they intended to do and how early they wanted to finish. OSU is going to get an excellent hire, save themselves and at least one candidate the (financial and mental) cost of an AHA interview, and give someone the Christmas present of their dreams. With skype, I see no reason to inflict the cattle call on any fellow human being, and suite interviews are only slightly better. Good luck to everyone in this meager year.

• Yes, this is normal. This system, similar to those used in many other colleges/universities, does not send out confirmation emails. Usually, if your application were not complete, it would say "incomplete" under one of the columns when you check "application status." "In progress" simply means that the process of selecting a hire continues, whether or not the actual review of applications is ongoing or not. Based on the comments above, I would say that if you have not been contacted to provide materials, chances are that you, like me, did not make the first cut. 11/22

  • Why so fishy?  Also got contacted for an interview. I assume that most applications were in a while ago, as that's when others had deadlines, thus many sent out at the same time.
  • Congrats and I'm sure you and others are well-deserving of the interviews. I would just add that it is not standard protocol, given most SC's have been bogged down with 100-200 applications, that an SC would treat all those apps and turn around with interviews in less than 2 days. Many searches can take several weeks to go through materials, even if some sizable number were received in advance. Anyway, good luck!

  • Is this ad targeted towards someone in particular, given the strange addition of asian history? It seems unlikely that anyone would be able to teach euro civ and an asian history survey with any degree of competence.
  • I would imagine they might be interested in someone who does, say, French imperialism in Southeast Asia, or German colonial involvement in China (just to give two hypothetical examples).  Presumably such scholars would have a minor field in Asian history and could teach a general survey.  Whether they would be interested in someone who works on British or Russian involvement in Central Asia is anybody's guess.
  • If you look at the department website, rather small department, it looks as if each of the faculty members teaches a course outside of their "specialty." I think maybe they are looking for someone who can teach an Asian survey course even though their own research does not focus on Asia. So it seems anything Modern Europe would suffice as long as we are willing to teach the Asian survey.

• In that case, I think the decent thing to do would have been for the search committee to have immediately notified the other interviewed candidates. • Hey guys, could I just ask for some opinions here? It's clear that a 4/4, possibly with 4 preps, is more than a full time job, especially for a new professor. Do they REALLY expect significant research (another 5-10 hours a week) and department service (another 5-10 hours?) I ask this question based on the more comprehensive h-net listing. We're talking upwards of a 60 hour week, possibly more once you add on office hours, student advising, and talk attendence/prep, not to mention all the other stuff like informal dinners with potential tenure referees and so on. When you take a job like this, what part gives? What is the reality of taking a job like this?
  • If it's four preps, that's brutal. No matter what, my impression is that its the research that gives way. check the department; who's doing serius research. This is, I'm guessing, not a job you'll write your way out of. Doesn't mean you can't enjoy it, just that if youre aiming for R1, it will be a long slog out of this place. (x2)
  • Based on the wording of the ad, I see no reason to suspect that four preps in a semester would be likely.  It sounds like the successful candidate would typically have two or at most three preps in a semester, which is fairly standard for a teaching institution.  That's what I'm doing currently (with a 5/5 load).
  • 4/4 with three preps is manageable, although during the first year (when those preps are also all new preps), you do have a full plate.  But research/writing is generally done during the summer months and winter break and not during the school year.  I published a book and four articles before I came up for tenure in a position like that, but it was all done during the four months/year when classes aren't in session.
    • Thought I would share that this position (4/4) will require 2 preps per semester for junior faculty (one prep later), and classes are capped at 18 to 35 (depending on whether it is lower, upper, or seminar).

  • Agreed - the complaint most people make on this page is that an institution keeps them outside the loop of what is going on. Wilkes have done a decent job of at least keeping applicants up to date with their search process. Complaining that they have said that non-interviewed candidates could still be considered (which we all understand is highly unlikely) seems petty.

• This is mostly an impression--so I hope this is an appropriate forum to post this--but it seems as though this departments has been making one of two types of hire the last 5-10 years: EITHER brand new Ph.D.s, OR senior historians head-hunted from elsewhere.  I.e. if you're an adjunct or postdoc or (V)AP somewhere else, the odds aren't in your favor.    Does anyone else know anything about the department?  Does anyone else have this impression?  (Or can anyone else contradict it?)
  • That doesn't fit with what I've seen of the people we've invited for interviews - we tend to get a fairly good career spread.
• The above commdent (the "impression" about this department favoring freshly minted PhDs or head-hunting other top schools) is very interesting.  I hadn't thought about it, but I am reasonably acquainted with the department and its practices the last few years, and I'd have to say there's something to it--with a qualification.  If it's a straight-forward hiring within the department, yes--the above comment rings true.  But if the the hiree is in some way cross-listed with another department or program (history and law, history and religion, history and East Asian studies), then it does seem to be a pretty open search.  I don't know if this has to do with funding or what. 
• There's some possibly relevant chatter (alarming? alarmist? I don't know) about the department, the university, etc. further up, under the posting for the Byzantine search.  It deals with the ins and outs and ups and downs of an unsuccessful search last year.

  • There are a lot of weird things going on here.  First off, however, their most recent (presumably intended to be long-term) hiree died of cancer.  So you can't really blame anyone for that.  That said, yes, this place seems to be horribly run.  I think they've advertised for this position at least 5 out of the last 10 years.  For a few years it was "1500 and 1600s" OR "1800s"--which is weird: what about the 1700s?  It really sounds like a divided dsearch committee.  Years ago I had an AHA interview.  It was perfect and (naively, I'll admit) I assumed a campus visit was in the works.  Never heard a word from them again.  The next year I had an AHA interview, a campus interview, and then heard not a word until June ("We are sorry, but the search has been unsuccessful again...".)  The husband of a friend has also had similarly bizarre experiences with another department, so these problems really do seem to be at the institutional level.
  • This is not quite accurate. The asst. prof. who died was replaced in the 2010-11 search (the same search detailed on the Universities to Fear page). The candidate who replaced him (i.e., the most recent, presumably intended to be long-term, hire) left last year. As a now-deleted comment on the Universities to Fear page also pointed out, three early-career faculty members, all women, have left the department in as many years.
  • The previous holder of this position is now employed, according to multiple website giving her affiliation for this year, at SUNY Binghamton, which advertised last year for a historian of the British Empire.
  • She went from Wake Forest to Binghamton? ... Either there's family nearby, or SUNY Binghamton is better than Wake Forest. Which from what I've heard of the SUNY system is not saying much for Wake Forest.
  • "Better" can mean a great many different things depending on individual circumstances. Without more information I wouldn't necessarily read anything into the faculty member's decision (I don't work at either school nor do I know the person concerned, BTW).

If your beliefs are purely secular and you never set foot in church/synagogue, then you simply aren't a good fit for the job (and wouldn't be happy at Baylor anyway). The administration isn't too nosey about personal faith and is entirely hands off about what you do in the classroom. However, as a religious institution, Baylor can (and will) legally ask you about your general religious background and how you see yourself fitting with the University's mission.

• BEWARE: CEU is an extremely problematic institution that engages in employment practices described in an AAUP investigation last year as "seriously deficient." These include nonrenewals of contracts based on shaky "collegiality" grounds, which AAUP standards explicitly prohibit. Last year a faculty member in international relations who taught for a semester in this department brought successful legal action against CEU in a US jurisdiction for breach of contract, personal and professional harassment, and gender and religious discrimination. She received a large financial settlement and got a job at a more prestigious institution, but after witnessing the case it is hard to imagine that anyone seriously interested in a scholarly career would even consider CEU.
