    • Just wondering if anyone would name their fields. In the end, are they looking for British or Continental?  Thanks!
      • A: I work on Britain, I guess... but I don't understand why they would necessarily be "looking for" one or the other, given they explicitly said they were open to either in the ad. I would bet they took a smattering of both...
  • Has anyone heard whether BC is planning on doing AHA interviews as part of this search, in addition to "further materials" requests? Or are they skipping the AHA part?

Responsibilities would include teaching a course in World Civilization, introductory level lecture courses, and colloquia and seminars for undergraduates in the candidate’s specialization"
  • Review begins: 15 Dec. 2012
  • Does anyone know if they will be interviewing at the AHA, given the late deadline?
  • Anyone know the teaching load at Howard?
  • Teaching load: 2 x 2.
  • Do they really want a full-size writing sample (I mean, mailing them a whole dissertation or book manuscript? That's a lot of postage!)
    • That's what they asked for, so that's what I did. It really wasn't that expensive.
    • Postage costs for me from the West Coast (priority mail) were $17.  High enough to be annoying, but not in any way a deterrent to actually applying.
    • Copying costs were higher for me than mailing costs, but again, not high enough to be a deterrent.
    • Has anyone received an acknowledgment of receipt of materials or an EOE form?
      • Nope, and I'm starting to feel increasingly sour about this. I will probably send them postage and ask for my materials to be returned as soon as I see some action (assuming that I'm not asked to interview, which I think is likely).
      • It's a buyer's market but it's still inappropriate to ask for full manuscripts at this stage. For some people that means sending off a $75 monograph or a complete, unpublished book MS. And with an open European history ad, they are going to get hundreds of applicants. There's no way they are reading more than 10% of the material they receive. Are they just trying to stock their library?
      • AGree with the above. A few chapters should suffice.
  • Just called the department for an update, and it turns out they're still sifting through those paper-heavy applications! (Jan. 14)
  • any news? (2/7)
  • Just called the department. They've sent out word to the interviewees, and are now interviewing. (2/27)

  • Beware of accepting any position at this university, as the school is extraordinarily insular and full of Texans who view outsiders with suspicion.  The university belongs to no system and no one audits its books or checks the power of an administration that hires its friends and gives itself hefty pay raises.  There are some quality people in this department, but they lost four profs in 2011, three who left for better positions.  An incredibly factionalized department, where personal loyalty to the former chair was rewarded above merit.  If you take this job and you are competent, expect to be given a very heavy workload so those with tenure can do less.  Their women's historian destroyed the career of a faculty spouse because she wanted to. Beware of this place.  It was the most unprofessional academic institution that I had ever heard of.  Academic mobbing happens regularly here. (Nov., 2012).
  • Complete agreement with above.  (Dept. member, non-history, at SFA.)
    • The Universities to Fear page is designed for general criticisms/warnings about specific colleges and universities.  AFII (talk) 10:37, January 2, 2013 (UTC)
    • In fact, these same criticisms are already on that page.
  • For the record, there is a new department chair.
  • Offer made and accepted.
    • Darn it, but congratulations. When was the offer made?

  • Congratulations!  May I ask what your field is?
  • Twentieth-century Germany.
  • Did anyone hear about a campus interview?

    • Email acknowledgement received 12/7 x2
    • Has anyone heard anything about this job? Do they intend to interview at the AHA?
    • Nothing since the above email. I have no clue on the second question. There's been no mention.

    • Email, "search has been closed" 1/23 (x3)

  • Review begins: 1 Dec. 2012 and position is open until filled.
    • Search cancelled [is this true? has anyone heard anything from them?]
    • This is wholly untrue: this search has not been cancelled. Paul J.E. Kershaw, Chair, Search Committee (pjk3p@virginia.edu)
    • Thank you for the clarification. Could you provide any details regarding the expected timeline/stages of this search? (12/26)
    • I guess not...(12/31)
    • I would guess they found suitable candidates at the Associate level and skipped straight to the on-campus stage of the search. Does anyone in the area know if they have scheduled visits?
      • [My friend who had a Skype interview last week is ABD, so they're not only choosing from a pile of Associates.]
    • (01/06) I don't know at what rank(s) they're considering making the hire or timeline, but I heard from a friend at UVA that they scheduled first round Skype interviews for this week.
  • Campus Interview: (anyone heard yet?)
    • Nothing yet. (1/14)
    • Well, in the meantime here's something for everyone to meditate on (1/18): http://tinyurl.com/bxw8sme
      • Nice link. And, BTW, still nothing. Assuming that means curtains for me. (1/18)
      • No need for despair yet, as everyone says they could just be waiting to get the finalist list approved by the dept. or dean. It certainly would be a nice place to live, but my God, have you seen how brutally low their salaries are, especially considering the high cost of living in Charlottesville? I hope that this database is just showing a halved sabbatical salary or is out of date, but for example check out what is listed for the search committee. At least the asst. professor seems to have been started higher... http://datacenter.timesdispatch.com/databases/salaries-virginia-state-employees-2011/
      • yeah, I think this is starting to look like the ship has sailed (1/20)
  • Campus interview invite (2/5)
  • Offer made and rejected (salary is ridiculous and the university lacks leadership; scandals made the front page of newspapers).[...conjectured the candidate who evidently didn't get an interview, haha, neither did I but just saying] -- perhaps you should read the newspaper once in a while, everything is true. [Hey- I just meant conjecture about an offer being made before the interviews were finished. But yes I agre that could eventually be a possibility, all that stuff about UVA's idiotic board and the miserabley below market salaries they pay their faculty- how could anyone miss it, it's always in the national press!]
  • I don't think an offer has been made - at least one more candidate is coming for a campus visit next week.
  • Maybe the initial candidates didn't pan out.
  • I called around the various depts. until I got a secretary (or maybe it was the student office worker?) that would tell me something and it looks like they aren't even finished with all of the campus interviews yet! the last one was postponed for after their spring break because of the 'Snowquester'  They wouldn't say or didn't know when they were finally going to meet and make the decision just 'after the last interview is concluded' I know there'sno point in keeping one's hopes up by the time March rolls around, but it would be nice if some of these places actually let you know what the status of the search was so you don't maintain false hope.  (3/13)
  • From a friend on campus: offer pending [made from dept. of History, for an advanced asst. prof.] (3/26)
  • Offer declined (4/10).
  • Offer declined (4/17).
  • If you don't mind saying, just how low is this pay?
    • Salary actually wasn't too bad ($70K); offer declined for better one elsewhere. Bigger problems had to do with the teaching load/mix; restricted opportunities for grad teaching and mentoring; some depts. were better/worse than others (one dept. didn't even allow its faculty to teach a grad. level class more than once every three years). Worryingly TA support didn't seem to be gauranteed despite the large class sizes, some profs. complained they had to do all the grading for their large surveys classes themselves.
  • Were they ever able to make a hire, or did the search fail?  The institution obviously has a lot of problems but it would be a shame if they couldn't find anyone to take it (...or refused to offer it to anyone who would take it).
  • Rejections sent out. (5/17)
  • Search failed- unable to make a hire (5/21) -- Not really surprised, knowing the people there.

  • Deadline: 4 Jan. 2013  NB: there is an earlier date given on the university's Vacancies page 28 Dec. 2012
  • I love it, they want applications faxed in?
    • Apparently so, though there is an email address provided in link too (appts@admin.uwi.tt). I contacted Interfolio and they do not send faxes.
  • Marital status??
    • They have some sort of housing remuneration, so I assume this is to determine what sort of living arrangements one needs.
    • Note that this is not in the US, so anti-discrimination laws may vary.
    • That's putting it mildly. If you are LGBTQ, you do not want to work or live in Trinidad and Tobago.
    • Yeah?
      • According to this link, "Trinidad and Tobago ban[s] relations between same-sex couples, especially men... Since 1976, Trinidad and Tobago has even forbidden homosexual persons from entering its territory."
  • On their website it states "submit with the application form, your full particulars of qualifications, experience, date of birth, marital status and addresses of three (3) referees".  Do you think they mean a cover letter since this information is also contained within their application form?
  • Request for CV and letters of reference received (3/4)

University of Wisconsin- Madison - Central/Eastern European History, 1815-present[]

  • Tenure track faculty position of Assistant Professor of Central/Eastern European History, 1815 to the present--with a focus on the territories of the former Hapsburg Empire and/or Poland, to start Aug. 2013
  • Applicants should hold a doctorate or anticipate its completion by the start of the appointment. Candidates should demonstrate evidence of creativity and excellence in their field and have demonstrated competence in at least two languages from the region.
  • Interested candidates should send hard paper copies of their letter of application, curriculum vitae, and a writing sample of approximately 50 pages, as well as three signed hard paper copies of letters of recommendation (electronic versions will not be accepted) to Ms. Nicole Hauge, Central/Eastern European History Search Committee, Department of History, University of Wisconsin-Madison, 3211 Mosse Humanities Building, 455 North Park Street, Madison, WI 53706-1405. We also request that you send PDF copies of your letter of application, curriculum vitae, and your writing sample of approximately 50 pages to historysearches@lists.wisc.edu. If the writing sample forms part of a larger book manuscript or dissertation, please include an abstract and table of contents or a statement of how the writing sample fits in with the larger project.
  • For full consideration: 1 Nov. 2012
    • Intend to conduct preliminary interviews at the AHA.
  • Request for more materials [11/23]
    • Amended, per request below: Published material or works in progress, along with sample syllabi
  • Would the above poster mind sharing what materials the SC requested?  Has anyone else received a similar request?
    • I haven't. But for what it's worth, I've become convinced it's an inside job. description fits very well with the profile of an asst. prof at UWisc Milwaukee, who is also currently a visiting fellow at one of the institutes in madison.
    • I know that at least one member of the search committee is convinced that it is a real search.
    • That's good to hear. Although I'm guessing the game's up if there've already been requests for more materials.
    • So. . .did anyone else get a request for additional materials besides the poster above?  (Sayeth the applicant desperately holding on to hope. . .)
    • Anything new on this? And more generally (not just for this job) do you all think that if requests for more material have gone out, they've gone out to everyone, or are they just asking people they really want or are on the fence about? that is, how should a neurotic read the tea leaves?
    • In response to the question above: it is hard to say.  I served on a search committee two years ago, and in order to determine how close several ABD candidates were to finishing, we asked for whatever chapters had been completed up to that point. Other candidates were not requested to submit more materials until after their conference interview.
      • Thanks for the info! although as an ABD, I'm thinking that if the committee asked someone for published material or works in progress, I'm likely out of the running. But hope springs.
  • Invite for AHA interview 12/7
  • E-mail rejection [12/10] x2
  • Any news? [1/26]
  • ^^^Campus visits already arranged [1/26]
  • Have they made a hire? [2/26]

  • For full consideration: 1 Nov. 2012
    • I'm reading in the handbook from 2011 that the teaching load is 12 hours per semester, and according to the website courses are 3 credits. Is it really a 4/4 at a school that Carnegie lists as "high research activity"?
    • It's a 2/3 load.
  • 10/30 - Request for more information (online bio form and additional CV) and Affirmative Action card.
    • I received those soon after I applied as well (mid-October). The "bio form" was a standard job application.

    • Intend to interview at AHA
      • Unclear why the wiki has missed this so far...
      • (um, because no one has posted it yet! It's no conspiracy; I usually repost regularly from H-net, Chronicle, and from jobs.ac.uk, but if it's not put up on those sites then I would certainly miss it & I'm not sure how many others actively repost job adverts AFII (talk) 10:03, November 12, 2012 (UTC))
    • 12/11: request for AHA interview (x2)
    • 12/11: rejection notice received via email
    • 12/11: What if you got neither?
    • 12/12: rejection notice received via email (x3) - boilerplate HR language, makes it sound oddly as if they've already hired someone
    • 12/12: I agree. The email reads: "Although your qualifications were impressive, we have chosen an individual who more closely fits our needs at this time." So much for interviewing at AHA! I wonder if the fix was in...
    • The rejection e-mail for the Modern position was exactly the same.  Probably just standard HR message for rejections.  I actually appreciate that they sent them out early, rather than waiting until the end.
    • 1/22: Recieved snail mail letter that campus invites were made. Was interviewed at AHA.
  • Offer made and accepted 2/13.

    • Just that they have received my application materials
    • AHA interview request emails went out last week
    • Rejection email received (Dec. 11) (x7) -- I know it happens, but they could have avoided spelling my name in a way that was almost, but not quite, entirely unlike its real spelling
    • The admin person said that there were over 100 applications for this position.  Is that the new normal? -- Not sure how "new" it is. It was the case with most places my first year on the market (2009).
    • other letters so far this year also say 'over 100', which is lower than last year, when almost all cited 150-200. Or maybe they're wording it more kindly to make the situation sound a little less desperate?
    • My name was also misspelled in my rejection email. (x2)

Alma College (MI) []

  • Tenure-track, Assistant Professor position beginning August 2013.
  • Candidates should be broadly trained in European history with a specialty in Medieval or Early Modern Continental Europe and with expertise and interest in teaching the other field.
  • The instructional load will include survey courses in world and European history and upper-level courses in areas of specialization. We welcome candidates with an interest in teaching thematic, methodological, transnational and/or interdisciplinary courses related to the European medieval and early modern periods, particularly legal and women’s/gender issues.
  • Preference will be given to qualified candidates who have completed the PhD by August 2012; experience in undergraduate teaching is highly desirable. Candidates should submit electronically a letter of application, curriculum vitae, and contact information for three professional references to: Professor Edward C. Lorenz, Chair, History Department,
    historychair@alma.edu.
  • Review begins: Nov. 2012
    • I really want to apply for this one but I am skeptical. It's only listed on one job site and they have a visiting person who seems to fit the requirements quite well. Anyone have thoughts?
    • They're asking for an e-mail application and list of references. You don't even have to pay Interfolio. What do you have to lose by applying? At the very least, you're helping them since the internal candidate will look good by having been chosen out of a larger field.
    • This is the second time I have seen this listing in the past few years. The first might have been for the visiting position. It is possible the VAP is moving on or they got the OK for a TT hire. It can't hurt to apply.
    • I will just add that a couple of years ago I had an on-campus at Alma and in that cycle they hired their internal candidate...but you never know
    • They are only looking for a Medievalist who works forward. I am an Early Modernist and was told by the department not even to bother applying for the position.
  • The job ad is soooo closely written to the current VAP's specialties that I can't help but be cynical on this one.
  • 11/14: request for additional materials (graduate transcripts and teaching/research statement) received
    • Congratulations! Are you medieval or early modern? -- Medieval
  • 11/14: request for additional material
  • 11/20: telephone interview arranged
  • 12/12: invitation for campus interview
  • Offer made and accepted.
  • Congratulations and every success! It must be an amazing department.  I received a rejection email from them today. They told me it took them so long to get to back to me because of the quality of my credentials and the seriousness with which they took my application.  One problem perplexes me -- I never actually applied to the school. I wrote the the SC early in the fall with a question about the job.  But that was it!  And, in the end, while I received a polite rejection, I never did received an answer to my question.
  • That is too funny! I received the same email, but I actually did apply. (x5)
  • I did apply, but didn't get the rejection email.

  • Teaching responsibilities include some combination of introductory surveys of medieval and early modern Europe, topics courses for first-year students, and intermediate-level courses in the candidate’s fields of specialty.

  • Review begins 25 Mar 2013 and continues until the position has been filled.
    • Advert posted here 22 Apr., i.e. after the review was well underway AFII (talk) 07:15, April 22, 2013 (UTC)
    • Note: It was not posted by the Committee. I posted it as an applicant, hoping that someone else would have news to share, so the Committee is not responsible for any kind of under-handedness.
    • Email received 5/6: job has been offered to a candidate.

Grinnell College - Open Rank, before 1700[]

  • Tenure-track position in the Department of History (medieval or early modern Europe before 1700), starting Fall 2013.
  • Assistant Professor preferred; Instructor (ABD) or Associate Professor possible. We are especially interested in candidates whose teaching interests situate European history within the context of the wider world and cover a broad chronological and geographical scope.
  • In letters of application, candidates should discuss their interest in developing as a teacher and scholar in an undergraduate, liberal-arts college that emphasizes close student-faculty interaction. They also should discuss what they can contribute to efforts to cultivate a wide diversity of people and perspectives, a core value of Grinnell College, and how they can add to the department's transnational and global perspectives on history.
  • To be assured of full consideration, all application materials should be received by November 1, 2012. Please submit applications online by visiting our application website at jobs.grinnell.edu.
    • Has anyone heard anything about this search?  Seems that the early deadline would have produced at least some movement by this point.  (Or, as is most likely, I am fervently hoping that the lack of news means that all hope is not yet lost.)
    • Nothing at all here...x12
    • I've only received automated/templated responses stating they have received my references. (x5)
    • Any possibility that they have already issued AHA invitations and no one posted notice?
    • Invitation to AHA interview (12 Dec) (x3)
    • Rejection (13 Dec). Email stated they selected 12 candidates for interview at AHA. (x6)
    • While I'm disappointed, at least the SC let me know in a timely fashion -- very professional. Most of the other positions I applied for issued AHA invitations days/weeks ago and have yet to notify me. I appreciate not being left hanging. (x4)
    • This is one of the main purposes of this wiki, once you've seen AHA requests posted you know where you stand, otherwise you wait until April for that ridiculous rejection letter.
    • I still haven't heard either way. Anyone else?
    • Just got my rejection today (12/14) x4
    • Has anyone else been waitlisted? While I am not one of the chosen 12, they added: "We also want to make clear that this search is not over.  We continue to view your application as active until we make an actual appointment or until you choose to withdraw from consideration." (x2)
    • No disrepect, but that I suspect that is simply Grinnell's "polite but pratical rejection" language.  It allows them to move on without keeping the applicants waiting for a final letter in March or April.
    • It's SC boilerplate language and it translates as "There is 0.01% chance we will ever contact you again about this job."
    • Did everyone else receive the same "boilerplate language"?
      • I did.(x5)
    • So only 3 invitations to the AHA? Where are the other 9?
    • Do you really expect everyone to report their status here on wiki..? I only see some 10 rejections mentioned, though I bet they received some 150-200 applications for this position.
    • E-mail from chair saying that campus visits have been scheduled. 1/14
  • 3/6: received email stating that a hire had been made

Bryn Mawr College - Post-WWI[]

  • Tenure track assistant professorship in 20th C history, post WWI to present day.
  • "The area of specialization is open and we welcome candidates with the ability to do comparative work and to teach courses that transcend disciplinary boundaries and approaches"
  • PhD must be in hand by start date (July 2013)
  • Deadline for full consideration: 1 Nov. 2012.
  • Something tells me that their visiting person will be getting the job...
    • You never know--it doesn't always work that way (trust me)
    • Yes, people need to seriously stop going to departmental webpages, seeing a visitor and automatically assuming that that person is going to get the job. Other possibilites: the department hates the visitor, the visitor hates the department, the administration hates the visitor, the visitor has a partner at another institution, the visitor is quitting academia, the visitor isn't even applying for the job, the visitor needs to be with family elsewhere, etc etc. Or, one final possibility: the visitor has worked their butts off and deserves to compete for the job. Good for them. -- Thanks for this comment. I couldn't agree more. If you believe the visitor will get the job, don't apply. Better chances for the rest of us.
    • There does seem to be a trend where departments "suck the life" out of their term-faculty. It creates a situtation where a VAP might abhore making their situtation permanent. The "success" of becoming permanent faculty is a negative if the teaching load remains high and now you have service, research and a tenure clock ticking. That said, I would be very surprised if that's the situation at Bryn Mawr.
    • Contacted to fill out an online form that I had missed as part of the application process - doh! (11/8)
    • Don't think you missed anything. Everybody who submitted got the follow up online form I think. (11/9) [yes, I think so, too- I also received form email with link to online form. This form had not been mentioned before, I think.]
    • I applied via email but I have not (yet?) received a request to fill out an online form. (11/9)
      • Update (11/13): I called and spoke with the administrative assistant. She said that she has been working through a backlog of applications. I received the confirmation email and link to the online information form a few minutes later.
    • I also applied via email and have not received the request (11/11)
    • The request came with the confirmation email. Maybe you overlooked it?
    • Didn't receive email confirmation--thanks for the info I will call them now.
    • Any further developments? (26 Nov)
    • News? (6 Dec)
    • Not much news: received a letter dated 30 Nov indicating that review of applications is under way and enc. equal opps card. (7 Dec) x1 (They had already sent me this info via email in early Nov) I did this over email in November, too, and got the card in the mail yesterday. I actually laughed when I saw it was not the expected rejection letter. What on earth are they doing all this time? I actually had a connection to Bryn Mawr years ago, so my first thought when I saw the card in the mail was that they were sending me a rejection letter for the job in the same envelope with a request for money.
    • Haha --exactly my thought yesterday as I opened the envelope!
    • When I talked to the secretary last month she said they were inundated with applications.
    • anybody NOT receive the mass equal opp letter?
    • The AHA Job Center handout shows that Bryn Mawr will be interviewing in New Orleans.  Does anyone know when they'll send invitations?
    • From general experience I've seen interview requests go out as late as 12/15 - 12/20. But it's getting to the point where it's not unreasonable to call up the department and ask for a timeline.
    • Any News?
    • I e-mailed and they said they were meeting, and would let everyone know, tomorrow (Wednesday)
    • Our false hope can live for one more day.  Thanks for this update!
    • Anyone?
    • AHA interview request via email. (x3)
    • Anyone heard anything re: campus invites since AHA? SC said they would decide within two weeks of AHA, so guessing they already made their decision about campus interviews.
    • Campus interviews took place in late Jan. early Feb.
    • snail mail rejection letter saying post has been filled (3/14)

  • ONLINE ONLY
  • Deadline: 2 Nov. 2012
  • Anyone know the teaching load here? Couldn't locate that information on their website, but could just be missing it.
  • I wondered that too - from the schedule of classes, it looks like people are teaching 2 - 3 courses (I also noticed that they're on the quarter system, so you should take that into consideration as well)
  • 3-3-3 (ouch)
  • Any news? (12/14)
  • any news? (12/29) Have they canceled the search or are they not doing interviews at the AHA? They're not listed with the Job Center in the handout, though that doesn't necessarily mean that they're not at the AHA.
  • I believe the search is still active, but they are not interviewing at the AHA.  I have heard that Cal State system hires can be notoriously slow.  I'm hoping that's the case. (1/4)
  • Campus invites have been sent out.

Delta State University (Miss.) - European/World[]

  • Tenure track assistant professorship in European/World History from the French Revolution to present day
  • "The successful candidate will teach upper-level courses in modern European and World History and freshman-level World History survey classes. • "The candidate may be required to teach graduate-level courses for the Master of Arts in Liberal Studies program, as well as for the Master of Education in History. Other responsibilities include: providing service to the Division of Social Sciences and History, the wider university, and the profession, and also engaging in pertinent research."
  • Deadline: 15 Nov. 2012
    • Cross-posted to World/Global_History_2012-13
    • Yay! Teaching 4/4 in the worst state in the country!
      • Hey, I'll take that!!
      • Just for sake of comparison, what would you rather have: $70,000 at Columbia in NYC or $50,000 in Cleveland Mississippi? What would give you the better standard or living?
  • Invite for Phone Interview (11/30) (x2); (12/2) (x1)
  • Rejection letter received (12/13) (x1)
    • Was this post-phone interview?  Snail mail or e-mail?  (Good luck with your other applications, by the way!)
    • I (who posted about the rejection letter) didn't get an interview at all. My rejection came by snail mail x2
  • Invite for AHA interview (x 2)
    • Congratulations! I didn't think we would know anything until 12/17 or 12/18.
  • Invitation for oncampus visit (phone).
  • My application status shows that the position has been filled (4/1).

Denison University - 18th & 19th C.[]

  • Ttenure-track position in late 18th and 19th-century European history.
  • The person's area of expertise can be in any non-German speaking region of Europe. Teaching responsibilities in a 3/2 semester load include an introductory survey course on the history of modern Europe and upper level courses in the candidate's areas of expertise. Ph.D. and teaching experience preferred; minimum requirement is Ph.D. completed by appointment at the assistant professor level on August 29, 2013 ... Applications...must include a letter of application, C.V., sample syllabi, an article-length writing sample, an unofficial transcript, and 3 letters of recommendation.
  • Please submit application materials online at https://employment.denison.edu .
  • Deadline: 2 Nov. 2012 9 Nov. 2012 (Deadline has just been extended due to disruptions caused by Hurricane Sandy)
    • Intend to interview at the AHA
  • email asking for AHA interview (12/13) x3
  • email invite for campus visit (1/17)
  • What field?
  • Not even an "I'm sorry we are unable to invite you to campus" e-mail, just a fade-out. Keeping it classy, guys. (x2)
  • The search doesn't close just because three people got campus visits.  Sometimes the department doesn't like any of the visiting candidates; sometimes admin doesn't like them.  Sometimes the best candidate doesn't want the job in the end.  It's not that rare that the committee has to go back to the list and invite people ranked four or five and down.
  • I'm sorry, but you've completely missed my point. There is no reason that they can't tell you, if you have dropped $500 to fly to the AHA at the last minute and interview, whether you made it to another round.

  • Additional writing samples requested 11/20 (x 5)
    • What fields?
      • Germany
      • They're looking for a Germanist/East European

  • AHA interview scheduled 12/13 (FWIW, I'm not a Germanist)
  • AHA interview scheduled 12/13 (x2)
  • Rejection email received 12/13 (FWIW, I am a Germanist) (x2)
  • Had the person who received a rejection e-mail received a request for more materials? Am just wondering whether they sent all of their rejection e-mails out yesterday, or are parcelling them out.

  • Review begins: 1 Dec. 2012

  • AHA interview scheduled via telephone call (12/10).
  • Campus interviews scheduled.

Loyola University, Chicago - post-1945/Transnational[]

  • Tenure track assistant professorship in Post-World War II European History or Transnational History, to start Aug. 2013
  • "Applicants should have a Ph.D. in History when they begin their appointment and exhibit a strong potential for excellence in teaching and research, with expertise in post-World War II international relations and/or transnational history, with a preference for Europe in a global context, European international relations, and/or European transnational history."
  • "The successful candidate will demonstrate the ability to teach graduate and upper-level undergraduate courses in post-World War II European international relations and/or transnational history in their geographic area of expertise. The successful candidate will also be expected to provide history classes on the Holocaust and other classes that will be cross-listed with the programs in International Studies, Women’s and Gender Studies, and Peace Studies, teach in LUC's core curriculum, and pursue a successful program of research."
  • Review begins immediately [5 Sept.] and continues until: 31 Oct. 2012.
  • The job announcement asks applicants to "forward additional materials related to teaching excellence and samples of scholarly publications" their search committee. Does anyone have an idea what they're expecting? Publications is clear, but in terms of teaching? Teaching evaluations and sample syllabi? --> Yes, that is what I would assume.
  • Campus interviews will take place in November. Offer likely before AHA.
  • Has anyone been contacted?
  • On-campus scheduled
  • E-mail request for skype interview [11/16 x 2] Staggered line-up. Suggests case already closed.  --> Actually, I think they've invited people in the area for "on-campus" interviews.  They're the same as the skype interviews.  Has anyone been asked for a full campus visit?
  • I had a skype interview. Have not yet heard anything about campus visits, but was told they would be contacting people before Christmas and that the visits would be scheduled for the last two weeks of January. Based on what I was told during my interview I would tend to agree with the person who posted above that the "on campus" visits relates to initial interviews of people who live in the area.
  • Very nicely written rejection letter (12/9) x5
  • Job talk scheduled for Jan. (12/9) x2
  • any notion which direction they went for fields?
  • offer made and accepted (20th c. Germanist)

Specialization is open, but preference will be given to candidates with a particular interest in nineteenth- or twentieth-century history, and a field in Scandinavian history. Marymount University (VA)[]

[Posted 12 Dec without a link to the original ad. and after the review has started.  Please add a link to the original advert when you make a new post.  AFII (talk) 16:44, December 12, 2012 (UTC) ]; link added by user, although it doesn't work for me! AFII (talk) 15:56, December 17, 2012 (UTC)]

  • Tenure track assistant professorship in Modern European History, to being Aug. 2013
  • "The search committee prefers applicants with...respect for liberal arts education within the Catholic intellectual tradition"
  • 3/3 teaching load which "will include the Modern European History survey course as well as upper-division courses on 19th Century Europe, 20th Century Europe, and France since 1815. Applicants who can also teach Early Modern Europe, The History of Britain since 1603, Research and Writing, and Senior Seminar are particularly desired. The ability to introduce a new course on The French Revolution and Napoleonic Europe, Atlantic World history, or African history would be a plus. "
  • "The Department is seeking a specialist in the history of Western Europe in the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries"
  • Review begins 5 Dec. 2013
    • Intend to interview at AHA
  • Anyone heard from this search?
  • 12/19--anyone have any news?
  • AHA interview request via email (12/20)
  • Well piss!
    • Anyone else?  Did you hear by email?
    • Yes.  Also received AHA interview request via email on 12/20.  They are setting up 25 minute interviews on Friday Jan. 4.  I don't know how many people they are interviewing--I assume seven to ten or so--however many they can fit into one day.
    • Does anyone know if this is a new T-T line or a faculty replacement?  If the latter, who and why?
      • Previous person was killed in an accident.  Obit
    • Marymount's interview invitation at the AHA meeting informs candidates that they should be ready for the "cattle call" when they are called in for the interview.  I am overwhelmed by the high regard and respect they apparently have for their job candidates.
    • This high regard for candidates was also evidenced in that they were listed on the AHA job lists as accepting CVs, but then did not respond at all to my dropped CV. All they have to do is check a box on the cover page and hand it back to the AHA staff, and then they send an automatic negative response.  But, Marymount did not bother to even do this. (x3 absolutely classless of them)
    • Has anyone heard about campus interviews?
    • Any news (1/26)?
    • Invite for campus interview (2/2)
    • Did you hear by email or phone? BTW, congrats! -Email
    • Decision will be made around 11 March.
    • Offer made and accepted.

    • Noticed from their faculty page that they have three lecturers who teach and/or research Modern Europe, Modern Germany, and the Holocaust from a comparative perspective. Any thoughts on this?
    • Yes, it means this isn't a real job search, but a ritual to legitimize hiring one of them, unless all three are recent grads from the department. I've seen it many times before.
      • "unless all three are recent grads from the department" means you have not looked, and you have not read the ad very carefully, either.
      • Noticed the same, but look at the guy who teaches the Holocaust. Students hate him on ratemyprofessor. ? No they don't.
  • Did anyone receive a confirmation or anything? Request for phone interview 10/17

Warwick University (UK) - THREE positions[]

  • Two Assistant Professorships and one Associate Professorship in Modern Continental History
  • (NB: although in the UK, Warwick uses North American-style job titles; these seem to be tenured lectureships or senior lectureships)
  • "You will conduct research in Modern Continental European History, and be prepared to work in collaboration with colleagues within the Department, and across the University. You will be expected to build research networks in your specialism beyond the University. Preference may be given to candidates with specialisms in Modern French History or Modern German History."

You will be expected to participate as appropriate in the administration of the History Department."
    • "At Associate Professor level you will have a proven record of achievement in research, and have demonstrated excellence in publication in an area or areas of Modern Continental European History. You will have undergraduate and postgraduate teaching experience, a track record of successful funding bids, experience of, or potential to participate in collaborative grant initiatives and management, and the ability to participate as appropriate in the administration of the History Department."
  • Writing samples & syllabi will only be required from shortlisted candidates
  • Deadline: 22 Oct. 2012
  • Anyone with UK experience: The application form requires a "supporting statement" (Please outline how you consider that your knowledge, skills and experience meet the criteria in the person specification.) I would have thought this is what the Cover Letter does, which they ask for as well. Is it possible to leave this simply blank, or briefly write "Please refer to my cover letter", or would it be advisable to discuss my skills in detail in this box? UK applications can be confusing...
    • Cover letter might be more cursory - ie here's my stuff, what's included etc. what's under a separate cover etc. while the statement would address explicit criteria, rather than the sometimes North American tendency of "look at me and what I've done". In other words, unlike North American job postings that 'fish', the UK ones don't, and they want you to show how you fit succinctly. Address the list of criteria directly. In general UK applications have much less 'play' room.
  • Did anyone hear anything already? Or is no news bad news?
  • No, no news yet. Edit: Contacted yest - longlisted, request for more materials (7/11/12)
  • Contacted, alerted about long-listed status, more materials requested (11/7/12) (x2)
  • Any of the long-listed people hear anything further yet? -- Nothing at all. Not sure they requested letters of recommendation yet.
  • Received brief but polite rejection letter. (11/15) x3
  • Out of curiosity, were folks contacted by telephone, post, e-mail? -- Email, for the longlisting status.
  • 26/11: Anyone hear anything further? I know from my referees that references were requested last week, but no further word from Warwick yet. -- No news here.
  • 11/30: Rejection
  • 11/30 Call to fly out for interview.
  • Email invitation for interview. x2
  • Out of curiosity: which fields?
  • For my part, eclectic, but mostly 20th C intellectual history.
  • 20th C Germany
  • 20th C Italy
  • Unconfirmed Rumour: 1 post has been offered to untenured Yale Prof in French History

You will also contribute to the teaching of existing courses, especially the core modules at year 1 and year 2; and where appropriate, you will contribute to MA teaching and participate in the supervision of PhD students. Binghamton University, SUNY- Britain & its Empire since 1650[]

  • Tenure-track assistant professor in the history of Britain and its empire since 1650. The position will begin Fall 2013.
  • Candidates should submit application materials electronically at http://binghamton.interviewexchange.com/.
  • These materials should include a letter of application, a curriculum vitae, three letters of recommendation, a substantial piece of scholarly writing, and sample syllabi. Potential candidates should address inquiries to Dr. Howard G. Brown, Chair, British Search Committee, Department of History, Binghamton University, SUNY, Binghamton, NY 13902.
  • Review of applications will begin on 15 Nov 2013 and close 1 Dec. 2012
  • For what it's worth, there is a VAP (James Lothian) in this field and the position description "history of Britain and its empire since 1650" fits his early modern + modern profile: http://www2.binghamton.edu/history/people/faculty/james.html
  • I think it is ethically objectionable to post this person's name on this wiki.  Shame on you for doing this.  If people want to know about the VAP they can look it up themselves.  This person does not need to be called out on anonymous wiki for simply having a job and existing, but I guess the desperaton caused by the job market means ethics can be thrown out the window.
    • Q: Assuming that this is a legitimate search, is the teaching load 2/2?
    • I don't know about teaching load, but there is no reason to believe that this is not a legitimate search. Schools often do full searches when they have already have a VAP. Sometimes it's because they want to hire that VAP in a credible way and sometimes it's because they think they can do better than the VAP they've got. Sometimes they change their minds in the middle of the search. There's no way any of us can know. Either way, it's a pretty unpleasant experience for the poor VAP, but that's academic life.
    • God you inside hire conspiracy theoriests are depressing.
    • It is not a conspiracy theory to note that there is an existing VAP who fits the job posting. It is merely acknowledging information that may be pertinent to the search. I am sorry that you are depressed by this. Indeed, there is much to be depressed about regarding the job market.
    • It certainly implies a conspiracy. I don't know the guy from a bar of soap, but he has a book, he's done lots of teaching, and he has a classic academic bio photo, so he's probably as good a chance as anyone at getting the job. If he does get it, there is nothing to suggest that it's a fait accompli. As far as I can tell the only "pertinent information" (i.e. information that is useful to potential applicatants) that can be gleaned from the existence of a VAP is that they need someone to teach British history. And we know that anyway, because they posted a job ad. I personally don't find the job market depressing anymore. I've come to terms with it. I find the naming and shaming of adjunct workers by anonymous people on a highly trafficked website depressing. (x2!)
  • Any news - conspiratorial or otherwise?! (26 Nov)
  • Others listed below have started to issue AHA invitations - any progress at Binghamton?
  • So review began 15 Nov and closed on 1 Dec and they still have not managed to notify any candidates about interviews?
  • Either candidates are not posting progress or this SC is truly hopeless.
  • Request for Skype interview in January (12/17)
  • Rejection email (12/17).  Odd wording: "After reviewing a large number of impressive applications, we have selected a long short list for the purpose of preliminary interviews.  As a result, we will not be pursuing your candidacy any further at this time."  For the second sentence, how about: "Unfortunately your application has not been selected . . ."?
  • I haven't heard anything either way ... (12/18) Ok, I got it today (12/19)
  • Inside candidate has job talk.
  • Say what you will, including names or not, but what I find depressing is a department running a bogus search. We'll see how it turns out but it feels like a waste of my time. Anyone else have news on this department?
    • I don't really understand the complaints about "bogus" or "inside" searches. It makes tremendous sense for departments to hire people who they already know, because they already have extensive information about the candidate, their teaching strengths, and how they get along with the department. And what does it really cost the other candidates? Is changing a few words in a cover letter really such a taxing endeavor? Even if one makes it to the on-campus stage, getting invited to meet a lot of colleagues, give a talk to an engaged audience, and get a free dinner is not some horrible penalty. (One exception: If one were to use personal funds to attend the AHA solely to interview in one of these "bogus" searches, you have a legitimate grievance.
  • VAP did not get the position.
  • Shall we all hold our breath until our conspiracy theorist apologises?

Oklahoma State University - Medieval English History[]

  • Deadline: 23 Nov. 2012
  • Gotta ask the obvious question: is this an inside hire? There's a VAP with relevant credentials.
    • For some values of "relevant"; the VAP's field is early medieval Ireland.

  • Specialization in late medieval England, specifically 14th Cent.
  • 1/10: Request for on-campus interview. (x2)
  • Was the request via email or phone? Since I didn't get an email I'm figuring I'm out of the running, but if it's by phone maybe they'll call tomorrow? Or the next day? Or.......? :)
    • I don't know how it came since I didn't get contacted either, but remember that they said that they may select (or maybe dip back into the pool for) a fourth or fifth candidate for an on-campus interview. I'm not not putting this one in the "wikijection" column on my spreadsheet quite yet.
    • It was a phone call--and also an e-mail since I had my phone off and was teaching when the call came in.(x2 - I got both a voicemail and email)
    • Have the campus interviews been held yet? I'm ready to cross this sucker off my list (2/24).
    • Offer made and accepted.
    • The hire appears to specialize in Italian cardinals, not medieval England. Go figure.

This position is in the field of modern British history, with a particular emphasis on teaching the British Empire of the 19th and 20th centuries.
  • Attractive secondary fields include the history of South Asia. The candidate should have a demonstrated ability to teach introductory courses in World History, upper-division and graduate-level courses in specialty, participate in University's Interdisciplinary Studies and New Freshmen Seminar curricula.
  • Position will carry a 3-3 teaching load.
  • ABDs close to completion may apply. If PhD is not completed at the beginning of the contract period, a one-year term appointment will be made at the rank of instructor.

  • For full consideration: 15, Nov. 2012.
  • Request for writing samples 22 Oct (apparently this requirement was missed out of the job posting so I don't think I'm ahead of the pack).
    • I asked the question and SIUe confirmed your hypothesis. They inadvertently omitted the writing sample and the sample syllabi from the original posting.
    • From the SC: We apologize for the confusion. There was an error on our part when we originally posted the ads and we're working to get them all fixed. To clarify: we are requiring writing samples. If you have not yet submitted an application, please make sure that you include a writing sample. If you submitted an incomplete application based on the older ad, you will be asked to email us an electronic copy for review.
  • Any news? (11/26)
    • Not yet, but it's only been 2 weeks since the deadline. I am assuming they are not interviewing at the AHA, if they are, hopefully they will be going through the apps quickly so that they can give reasonable notice to those invited to interview (11/28)
  • Email invitation for AHA interview 12/2
  • Christ on a bike! I haven't heard anything from this one or Colorado State. Not going well so far.
  • Anyone else called for interview? (12/8)
  • Called for interview by email 12/2
    • Yes, 15 finalists to be interviewed at AHA (12/11)
    • Great, so a book on British decolonization, articles in top journals and a long list of courses on British and imperial history taught at several universities doesn't even get me in the top 15.
  • Any updates on campus invites?
  • Any news? (2/1)

Trinity College (CT) - Great Britain & the Empire post-1750[]

  • tenure track assistant professorship in the history of Britain & the Empire after 1750

    • Received email acknowledgement of application, 25 Sept.
    • Received email acknowledgement of application, 1 Nov x2
    • Received email acknoledgement of application, 15 Oct.
  • Any interviews scheduled yet?
  • Almost 4 weeks past the deadline - no news from anyone? (11/27)
    • Nothing here.  Please Search Committee, I'd like to know whether I need to spend $700 on attending the AHA or not!
    • Nothing here either.
    • In my experience search committees will usually interview by telephone/Skype if you are not able to make it to the AHA. If any members of the SC are reading perhaps they could confirm that they will do so?
    • Well said above! Nothing like last minute reservations in the New Year on a TA's budget...please let us know something soon.
  • Still nothing?
  • Still nothing here.  The position is still posted on their website, so I tend to believe the search committee is slow rather than the job being closed due to internal hire or some other reason.
    • Lots of search committees seem to meet on Fridays so hopefully they'll decide to make decisions today (Friday 12/14).  Six weeks is a long time to wait especially now that classes have ended.  Fingers crossed and chins up, comrades.
    • Still nothing.  As of late Nov I heard they hadn't begun looking at applications yet
  • request skype interview on December 20 ( 12/17, as in 3 days from now) - (x5)
  • Awesome SC admin!
  • Invite for campus interview (12/22) (x2)
  • Anyone else?  I thought their timeline was 7-10 days.
  • Nothing here, alas.
  • Has anyone who got a skype interview but not an on campus interview heard definitively that they are out yet?
  • Semi-definitive rejection email received ("At this stage in the search, we have concluded that several other candidates’ expertise appears especially suited to the needs of our department and, for the time being, we have chosen to advance only those candidacies ...As the process of settling on a finalist continues, we will update you") (1/4)
  • Offer made and accepted. (2/20)
  • Who got it?
  • I heard it went to Dr Jennifer Regan-Lefebvre.

German History[]

Appalachian State University - Leon Levine Distinguished Professor of Judaic, Holocaust, and Peace Studies[]

  • Review begins: 1 Nov. 2012 and remains open until filled.
  • Has anyone heard from the SC yet?
  • Any news?  The SC has had almost a month and a half by this point. . surely they must have developed a long list by now?
  • 12/19--anyone have any news on this search?
  • Any word? 1/17
  • What happened here?

Harvard University - Modern European History/Germany 19th and/or 20thC[]

  • Tenure-track assistant professor in modern European history from July 1, 2013
  • "The candidate should offer significant expertise in German history of the 19th and/or 20th century and be prepared to participate in a program that emphasizes the teaching of social theory and social-science approaches. The new colleague will be responsible for teaching at the undergraduate level in Social Studies and at both the undergraduate and graduate levels in History as part of the joint appointment. PhD required by expected start date."
    • Language is a bit confusing - "significant expertise"? Do folks think they are looking for a Europeanist who can cover Germany or a German specialist?
    • They're replacing a senior German specialist. Significant expertise probably means: do you have a prayer of filling his shoes?
  • Deadline: 1 Sep. 2012
    • Has anyone received a request for more materials? 9/10/2012
    • Did you? It would seem early to me.
    • Rec'd request for additional materials on Sept. 10. Have not yet heard back (today is Sept. 25) about interviews.
    • Thanks for the update. Did anyone else receive a request? They must have moved really quick, given that the submission deadline was only Sept 1..
  • Three finalists have been scheduled to come to campus. [10/2]
  • One additional campus interview is planned [11/2]
  • I wonder if they will deign to interview a woman. Or a non-Harvard Ph.D.
  • One wonders given the department's recent history whether a woman with her long-term career in mind would deign to apply.
  • Who got the information about the additional campus interview, and when?
  • Not one, but two additional interviews are planned [11/7]. This is coming from a source inside the department.
  • So the lightning-speed search slows down. What was wrong with the first three candidates, I wonder?
  • The down side of the absence of the AHA vetting process at work here.
  • Any news on when the additional visits have been scheduled? January?
  • No announcements yet. The rumor is they want to get them in before Christmas break.
  • Two additional candidates will be coming to campus in February.
  • Search ended without a hire. It may be restarted next year.

  • BEWARE: CEU is an extremely problematic institution that engages in employment practices described in an AAUP report as "seriously deficient." These include nonrenewals of contracts based on shaky "collegiality" grounds, which AAUP standards explicitly prohibit. Last year a faculty member in international relations who taught for a semester in this department brought successful legal action against CEU in a US jurisdiction for breach of contract, personal and professional harassment, and gender and religious discrimination. She received a large financial settlement and got a job at a more prestigious institution, but after witnessing the case it is hard to imagine that anyone seriously interested in a scholarly career should even consider CEU.
    • This wiki has a Universities to fear page, which is probably a better place to put general warnings about institutions (i.e. rather than specific warnings about a particular hire). AFII (talk) 09:04, April 1, 2013 (UTC)
  • Has anyone heard anything?
  • Nothing so far (5/16)

  • Emailed for AHA interview 12/4 x5

  • Phone "calls"?  Does the above poster know for a fact that more than one person was contacted?
  • Fair question.  No, not for a fact, but strongly implied.  I guess we've all got wiki fatigue at this point.  Apologies.
  • Committee said late January...could this have been accidentally put under the wrong heading? It seems unlikely that they met with their whole department, selected the short list, and got calls out in 3 scant business days.
  • They've definitely made their campus invites; I know at least 2 finalists personally. I think that the job talks are in late January, actually. Or at least begin in late January.
  • Has an offer been made?
  • Yes, offer made and accepted.

  • Review begins: 15, Nov. 2012, and will continue until the position is filled.
    • Intend to interview at AHA.
    • Interview emails sent out 11/28. (I got an interview request on the 29th, so it is possible they are emailing a few at a time.) [x 3]
    • Just out of curiosity, are any of the applicants who received interviews East Europeanists, or are they all Russianists?  As an East Europeanist, I am beginning to get a bit jaded when I see jobs listed as Russia/Eastern Europe or Central/Eastern Europe; they almost always seem to go to the Russianists or Central European (aka German) historians.
    • I don't know anything about this particular position, but I do know that there were two jobs from last year's hiring cycle advertised as Russia/Eastern Europe that went to Eastern (or Central-Eastern) historians. Perhaps the odds are similar to Modern Europe jobs going to non-French or Germanists; it happens, but not in the majority of cases.
    • Phone invite for campus visit 1/22 (Russianist)
    • Received very nice email saying that a hire has been made. 2/6 Congrats to the new assistant prof.

Discussion / Questions[]

General Queston moved to: European History Talk Page AFII (talk) 16:40, August 15, 2012 (UTC)

Agh! Why do we have this eyestrain inducing, unreadable blue against light gray color scheme on this page?

  • Not seeing the colour scheme you describe. The background I'm seeing is definitely white. I would suggest possibly trying another web browser to use the site (as it will appear slightly different in different browsers) Una74 (talk) 14:29, November 12, 2012 (UTC)

[12 Nov] ??? This page follows the same colour scheme as all the pages on the Academic Jobs wiki. AFII (talk) 07:43, November 12, 2012 (UTC)
