Full-Time / Tenure-Track Appointments - African-American / Africana Studies

Brandeis University - TT Assistant Professor, Women's and Gender Studies and African and Afro-American Studies - CAMPUS INTERVIEWS

Brandeis University seeks applications for a Tenure-Track Assistant Professor or early Associate Professor to be jointly appointed in the Department of African and Afro-American Studies (AAAS) and the Womens and Gender Studies Program (WGS). The successful candidate will begin her or his term in the Fall of 2014.

We seek candidates whose scholarship addresses issues of race, gender, class and sexuality in relation to people and/or cultures of African descent. While discipline and specialization are open, we strongly encourage candidates with expertise in the social sciences or the creative arts. Candidates should demonstrate a developed research agenda, a promising record of publication, and excellent teaching performance.

This search is part of an exciting new cluster hire initiative in African Diaspora Studies at Brandeis University. This effort aims to broaden and strengthen the existing intellectual community of scholars at Brandeis engaged in the study of people of African descent. We anticipate this initiative resulting in the hiring of 4-5 new faculty members in various related fields over the next three years.

The full-time position carries a 2-2 teaching load, with the successful candidate teaching introductory and advanced courses in both WGS and AAAS. Service responsibilities will be shared equally between AAAS and WGS. The successful candidate is expected to contribute to the core mission and institutional developments of both AAAS and WGS. Ph.D. must be in hand by the start of the appointment.

  • Review of applications will begin November 1, 2013 and continue until the position is filled. Please submit a letter of application, curriculum vitae, teaching statement, an article or chapter length writing sample, and three letters of reference on AcademicJobsOnline at https://academicjobsonline.org/ajo/jobs/3100. Questions about the position can be directed to: Wendy Cadge, Chair, Womens and Gender Studies Program (wcadge@brandeis.edu) and Chad Williams, Chair, African and Afro-American Studies Department (chadw@brandeis.edu). Brandeis is an equal opportunity employer committed to building a culturally diverse intellectual community and strongly encourages applications from women and members of historically underrepresented groups.
  • rejection received (x1)
  • skype intervews scheduled (11/21-11/22)
  • I have received neither a rejection nor interview request-- anyone else in that boat? (11/12 posting) (x13; this makes me a bit nervous!)
  • Is it possible they are staggering the interview requests?
  • Maybe it's a long list/short list thing - for those who received rejections or interview requests, did they come directly from Brandeis or through academicjobsonline?
  • They came directly from Brandeis
  • 11/22: anybody hearing anything?
  • 11/25: not a damn thing. (x3), 11/28 - have heard nothing positive or negative
  • 12/4: Anybody? Bueller?!
  • 12/4 : 12 skype interviews were conducted before thanksgiving. Pretty sure campus invite list is set now
  • 12/4: sigh
  • 12/5: Keep hope alive! Perhaps they are still deciding...unless someone can say, without a doubt, that they have received an invite to campus, it seems premature to suggest that invitations went out.
  • 12/5 I am all for being hopeful but the fact is that 12 people were interviewed prior to Thanksgiving. In addition, we know that a contributor posted earlier last month that Skype interviews had been scheduled (11/21-11/22). There might be any number of reasons why some of us have not heard any feedback. We could be on short list of candidates to consider if things do not work out with those persons initially identified by the search committee. Something else I have thought about is the fact that the listing does say that this hire is a part of an initiative to hire 4-5 scholars over the next 3 years. Maybe some of us are better fits for some of those positions so the committee is reluctant to send rejections at this time.
  • 12/6: Mass rejection email stating 243 applicants. (x9)
  • 12/7: Campus interview scheduled

  • Any updates? (11/19)
  • Still no word? (12/1)x3
  • I am surprised that there has not been any updates regarding this position. Perhaps the committee is swamped with applications. (12/4) x2. I'm feeling very unwanted right now myself!
  • Still nothing? (12/10)
  • My assumption is that this the search committee has identified some senior scholars for the position, none of whom posts on academic wiki. Otherwise, I have a difficult time believing that no one has received any feedback. (12/13)
