Responsibilities: The successful candidate will teach advanced undergraduate classes and graduate seminars in ethnic American literature as well as lower-level classes in American literature and will also direct the dissertation and thesis research of graduate students. THE DEPARTMENT: The Department of English offers its diverse student population a rich array of courses in literature, language, creative writing, and composition. The B.A. in English fosters an understanding and appreciation of 1) the major works of British, American, and global literature, including works by and about ethnic and cultural minorities and women, 2) the history and structure of the English language, and 3) the aims and processes of creative and critical writing. Our general education offerings emphasize themes of diversity, social justice, and sustainability in literature. In all our courses, the department helps students develop the advanced skills in reading, writing, and critical thinking necessary for successful careers.
The M.A. degree in English covers a range of periods, genres, and themes, and our program encourages students to participate in graduate student conferences and other professional venues. Our students include high school teachers, those interested in community college teaching, creative writers, and others from a variety of professions who seek an enriching graduate-level experience. Some of our students also apply for doctoral programs in literature, composition, and TESOL. The M.A. in TESOL prepares students to teach adult-language learners and enrolls students from around the globe. Our 12 full-time and 34 part-time faculty are active scholars, creative writers, and dedicated teachers.

DUTIES OF THE POSITION: The successful candidate will teach undergraduate and graduate courses in LatinX or Asian American literature. We are particularly interested in candidates who value engagement with issues of race and ethnicity, gender and sexuality. All members of the department are expected to teach composition and general education. In addition to teaching, all faculty are expected to sustain a record of scholarly work, advise majors, assist the department with administrative and/or committee work, and assume campus-wide committee responsibilities. Please note that teaching assignments at California State University, East Bay include courses at the Hayward, Concord, and Online campuses.
RANK AND SALARY: Assistant Professor. Salary is dependent upon educational preparation and experience. Subject to budgetary authorization.

Qualifications: Earned Ph.D. in Literature or a related field at time of appointment is required. The ideal candidate will demonstrate awareness of innovative pedagogy around issues of diversity and social justice, experience in advising and teaching students from diverse educational and cultural backgrounds, and evidence of teaching effectiveness. Preference will be given to candidates who demonstrate a record of scholarship (including dissertation) pertaining either to Latinx literature or Asian American literature. Secondary emphasis in one or more of the following areas is preferred: children's literature, global literature/transnational studies, composition and rhetoric, digital humanities, general education, or teacher preparation. Although the area is specialization is open, we are particularly interested in scholars working on Native American, Latinx, or Asian American literature.
This is a 9-month appointment beginning August 16, 2019. The successful candidate will carry a 2/2 load in the first year and a 3/2 (or 2/3) load in subsequent years. Teaching assignments will include advanced (graduate- and undergraduate-level) courses in the candidate’s area of specialization, as well as American literature surveys, Critical Writing and Research in Literary Studies, and first-year writing courses. Publications and professional service are required for tenure and promotion.

Qualified candidates should have a PhD in literature by the time of appointment, must demonstrate a strong commitment to undergraduate teaching, and must show potential to continue an active scholarly program. Promotion and tenure evaluations follow the American Association of University Professors guidelines.
The Naval Academy English Department is a mix of civilians with doctorates and military officers. All tenure-track faculty teach at all levels of the curriculum, including upper-level courses for English majors and sections of our two-semester freshman English sequence, Rhetoric and Introduction to Literature. The freshman courses—which are both introductions to literature and writing courses—are organized generically: plays, essays, and short stories in the fall; novels and poems in the spring. Each instructor designs an individual syllabus and chooses which books to teach within the generic guidelines. Full summer research support may be available for the first three years of new appointments; after that, civilians may receive partial research support in the form of matching funds for outside grants or by competing for Naval Academy Research Council grants. Brandeis University invites applications for a two-year, non-renewable Florence Levy Kay Fellowship in U.S. Latinx Cultural Studies, beginning Fall 2019. The area of sub-specialization is open. We welcome applications from scholars working in a wide range of areas within Latinx Studies, including literature; performance studies; border, migration, and trans-American studies; screen cultures and media studies.
Kay Fellowships are interdisciplinary appointments. The Kay Fellow in U.S. Latinx Studies will hold a joint appointment as a faculty member at the rank of lecturer in the Department of Romance Studies and in the Latin American and Latino Studies Program. The Kay Fellow will teach one course per semester and actively pursue his or her own research interests.
