Geosciences Research Division (GRD)

Reconstruction of Holocene Temperature and Precipitation

The Geosciences Research Division (GRD) at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography has an opening starting in 2020 for one Postdoctoral Scholar. The candidate will work on a project to develop a new reconstruction of Holocene temperature and precipitation in the d’Alpoim Guedes Laboratory. The objective is to create and update a database of paleoclimate proxies and downscaling these records to provide a high-resolution map of the impact of changing precipitation and temperature on the ability of different cultivars to complete their lifecycle. Overall, the objective is that these models will be integrated with population genomic data as well as data on archaeological site timing anddistribution.

Candidates should have demonstrated proficiency in “R” and in reproducible research; familiarity with paleoclimate proxy datasets: tree ring, speleothem, foraminifera etc. and; have an interest in interdisciplinary research at the intersection of archaeology and climate science. In addition, candidates are required to have completed a Ph.D. at the time of appointment.

The position is now open for a two-year period, with an option for an additional one-year, dependent on funding and performance. It includes a minimum stipend of $55,596 plus benefits (higher for applicants with postdoc experience). Appointees are eligible for health insurance through UC San Diego.

Michigan State University []

The Department of Community Sustainability (CSUS) at Michigan State University is considering candidates for a 12 month 100% appointment for a fixed-term teaching specialist in the area of Parks and Natural Resources. The successful candidate will teach up to 6 courses per academic year with additional possibilities for over the summer. This individual will contribute to the department’s efforts to assess student learning outcomes of its undergraduate and graduate curricula. We seek a colleague who embraces the Department’s core value of community engagement and will bring the scholarship of sustainability and possibly to bear on critical parks, recreation, and natural resources issues challenging communities across Michigan, the U.S. and the world.

Duties

Duties include: (a) developing and delivering high quality classroom instruction tied to curriculum learning outcomes; (b) helping develop and implement approaches to assess student achievement of learning outcomes across the Department’s curricula. Duke Kunshan University (DKU) invites applications for faculty positions in Environmental Science in areas including but not limited to Environmental Science, Biogeochemistry, Environmental Chemistry, Ecology, Environmental Biology, Ecophysiology, Environmental Health and Toxicology, Hydrology, Population Biology, Environmental Systems and Modeling, Waste Management, and Environmental Economics. Merrimack College Political Science and Public Policy Department (Environmental Studies Program)[]

Position Overview: The Environmental Sciences and Sustainability (ESS) Program at Merrimack College invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor in the area of environmental politics or policy, with possible expertise in areas such as environmental planning, law, or the non-profit sector. Applicants whose research focuses on either the domestic U.S. or international contexts are welcome. The ESS program is an interdisciplinary program that adopts a holistic approach. Students study environmental problems from the perspectives of the natural sciences, the social sciences, and the humanities with the end of addressing those problems at the local, regional, and global scale. Courses in the ESS program all include experiential learning wherein students develop real-world experience through campus and community-based projects. The successful applicant will be housed in the Political Science and Public Policy Department. They will teach courses in the common core for both the BA and BS degree programs and have the opportunity to develop and teach upper level courses both in the ESS program and their home department.

Amherst College: Assistant Professor of Environmental Studies[]

The Department of Environmental Studies at Amherst College invites applications for a tenure-track environmental scientist at the rank of assistant professor whose research intersects with the challenges of climate change. The department is looking for a person with broad intellectual interests who is committed to teaching and working at a liberal arts college. The appointment will begin on July 1, 2020.

Amherst College is one of the most diverse liberal arts colleges in the country. Davidson College -- Assistant Professor in Environmental Studies[]

The ideal candidate will have completed coursework, taught courses and conducted research that connect social science theories and methods to multiple global environmental challenges, such as air pollution, biodiversity loss, climate change, environmental justice, food and water insecurity, natural resource extraction or urbanization. Relevant expertise in areas such as human values, markets, migration, public health, social learning and sustainable development within the context of environmental change is particularly welcome. The successful candidate will have a Ph.D. in a social science discipline or interdisciplinary program by June 2020, a commitment to excellent teaching to a diverse undergraduate population and a desire to mentor undergraduate research projects.

We are particularly interested in candidates who can deepen our students’ interdisciplinary understanding of the anthropogenic causes of environmental change at the local and the global scale, the effects of these changes on human communities, and how communities and individuals are responding to these changes. We are also seeking candidates who are committed to teaching and research that includes possible solutions to global environmental challenges.

The potential to contribute to other programs (including Africana Studies, Anthropology, Data Science, Digital Studies, East Asian Studies, Gender and Sexuality Studies, Health and Human Values, Latin American Studies, Sociology and South Asian Studies) will be viewed favorably, as will the candidate’s interest in and willingness to contribute to the first-year Writing Program or the requirement in Justice, Equality and Community. Bates College-- Assistant Professor in Environmental Studies (Environmental Humanities)[]

The Bates College Program in Environmental Studies seeks to hire an assistant professor in the environmental arts or humanities to join a vibrant, multi-disciplinary community beginning August 1, 2020. We seek a scholar or scholar/practitioner in cultural studies, literature, or performing/studio arts who is attentive to hierarchies of power and privilege and can offer cross-cultural and/or transnational perspectives on environmental traditions. Fields and research approaches are open, but could include: critical race theory, ecocriticism and nature writing, ecofeminism/feminist environmentalism, energy humanities, indigenous and post-colonial/decolonial/decolonizing environmentalisms, posthumanism and animal studies, and queer ecologies. Applicants with a demonstrated record of working successfully with a diversity of students, including underrepresented and marginalized populations, are encouraged to apply. Hamilton College – Assistant Professor of Environmental Studies (Environmental Data Science) []

The Environmental Studies Program at Hamilton College invites applications for a tenure-track position in Environmental Data Science at the rank of Assistant Professor, beginning July 1, 2020. We seek candidates whose teaching and research emphasizes big data and/or spatial approaches to the study of pressing global environmental issues and who will contribute to the cluster hire of additional faculty for the strategic Digital Hamilton initiative. Candidates may come from any disciplinary or interdisciplinary background in the sciences. The successful candidate will demonstrate their expertise in digital and/or computational approaches to environmental data science and the ability to develop an active research program that can contribute toward cross-disciplinary conversations. The hire will play a critical role in teaching courses in Hamilton’s rapidly growing Environmental Studies Program, and will be expected to develop and teach a data science or applied statistics course, as well as a course on digital spatial data (e.g. GIS) with environmental applications that both employ digital pedagogy and technologies. Additional courses might include an environmental research design course, as well as other courses in their area of expertise. The teaching load for this position is four courses during the first academic year and five courses thereafter. To earn tenure, faculty are expected to demonstrate excellence in teaching, continued scholarly development, and service to the college.

The successful candidate will teach an environmental humanities core course taken by all environmental studies majors and minors; applicants are encouraged to discuss how they might incorporate a range of humanities perspectives (e.g. literature, creative arts, philosophy, religion) into this course. They also will teach upper level courses within their specialty area and a topical seminar that fulfills a requirement for students in their first semester at Wofford. The fellow will teach three courses (2-1 or 1-2) per academic year, including Environmental Perspectives, an introduction to Environmental Studies. The fellow is eligible for travel support and reimbursement of relocation costs within the College’s published policies. Candidates must complete the Ph.D. by August 2020. They must demonstrate commitment to, and excellence in, undergraduate teaching as informed by current practice and scholarship in the field.
