Application Deadline November 15, 2018

APPLICATION: Qualified candidates should submit the following materials through Interfolio. Click here to apply: https://apply.interfolio.com/55186

12/4/2018: Any updates or news? Has anyone interviewed yet?

Haven't heard anything on my end (12/4).

I interviewed for this job last year (search closed for budgetary reasons). Just looked it up: they contacted me      for a skype interview on 1/4/18. This year, a different person is leading the search committee (last year's chair is on sabbatical leave). So who knows what their schedule looks like. Like all faculty right now, they are probably just swamped and trying to finish the semester / quarter (12/5/18).

  • ^ Thanks for this. I applied last year as an ABD (now have PhD in hand) and if I recall correctly the application deadline was about a month later, around Dec. 15 I believe. Got a generic email in October from the new search chair saying the search had re-opened (pretty sure this went to all of last years' applicants).
    • Thanks everyone for the feedback. I also received the generic email in October that the search was re-opened. As another person noted, they are certainly quite busy. Fingers crossed to hear something positive soon. (12/5)
  • Checking back in - anyne hear anything last week on this? (12/15)
    • ˆ I have not heard anything but suspect that it must not be in the cards, considering it has been a month since the review began. Who knows (12/5).

Well, here we are just before the New Year. Anyone hear anything one way or another on this position? All seems very quiet.

-Video interviews held the week of 1/7

--Is this confirmed?

--Have campus visits been scheduled? Maybe they are going to do more video interviews...?

-now at campus vist stage

  • Maybe this is a dumb question, but.... Should folks who have not been contacted at all by this point assume we were not selected? Also, what is the confirmation that campus visits are happening? This is the only place I have heard a rumor.
  • I applied last year and never heard anything one way or the other and only learned later the search collapsed due to funding. So I don't expect to hear anything this year either way.

--Yes, the visits are confirmed.

2/14: Is the search still open? Has someone accepted an offer?

>>Send us a smoke signal or something. haha!

^Just gotta say that this seems like an inappropriate comment even though it is probably intended to be innocent...

Teaching responsibilities (https://envs.yale-nus.edu.sg/) include contributing to the Introduction to Environmental Studies module, offering specialized courses in the candidate’s field, supervision of senior capstone projects, and teaching into the Yale-NUS Common Curriculum. Candidates must demonstrate a clear passion for undergraduate teaching.

  • Environmental Science: We welcome applicants in any environmental science discipline, with a preference for candidates with tropical-system experience in marine conservation, marine ecology, or marine pollution and ecotoxicology.  Post-doctoral experience is required for junior candidates.
  • Environmental Humanities: We welcome applicants from candidates working in environmental humanities, with a preference for candidates in environmental history, or in religion and the environment. We especially seek candidates with demonstrated connections to the social sciences, who can mentor students and offer courses at the intersection of the humanities and social sciences around pressing environmental concerns.

Research achievement should include publications in leading peer-reviewed journals commensurate with career stage and scholarly field, as well as demonstrated ability or potential to secure research funding. For both positions, successful applicants will be expected to develop an active research programme that invites student engagement, while competing successfully for external funding.

Regionally-relevant experience or research focus is a plus.  We invite applications from candidates whose research and teaching will contribute to the integration of diverse aspects of environmental studies. Applicants should clearly describe their future trajectory of research and publication. Yale-NUS is a highly selective liberal arts and science college in Singapore, established in 2011 by Yale University and the National University of Singapore. Our small size (1,000 undergraduate students and ~ 100 FTE faculty) allows for close student-faculty interaction, while our association with the National University of Singapore, the country’s flagship research institution, provides access to rich library and other research resources.

Applications should include the following: (1) a cover letter explaining why a position in environmental studies at Yale-NUS College is of interest; (2) a full curriculum vitae, including a complete list of publications and relevant teaching experience; (3) a statement on research activity and trajectory; (4) a description of teaching experience and philosophy, including how these might fit with the College’s mission and curriculum; and (5) teaching evaluations. These should be submitted as a single combined PDF document via https://academicjobsonline.org/ajo/YaleNUS.

For Assistant Professor candidates, please have three academic referees submit a written statement of support via https://academicjobsonline.org/ajo/YaleNUS. For candidates at the associate or full professor ranks, please provide names and contact information of three academic referees.  Review of applications will begin on 31 October and continue until the positions are filled. Short-listed candidates will be notified soon thereafter; unsuccessful applicants will not be notified. The interview process will require an on-campus visit for each short-listed candidate, to include a research presentation, a sample class, and formal interviews. Questions should be addressed to search committee chair Professor Michael Maniates (michael.maniates@yale-nus.edu.sg).

Princeton University (USA:NJ) - Princeton Institute for International and Regional Studies, Fung Global Fellows - Deadline: 9 Nov. 2018[]

  • Princeton University is pleased to announce the call for applications to the Fung Global Fellows Program at the Princeton Institute for International and Regional Studies (PIIRS). Each year the program selects six scholars from around the world to be in residence at Princeton for an academic year and to engage in research and discussion around a common theme. Candidates will be considered in three categories: (1) Four of the fellowships will be awarded to early-career scholars employed in the equivalent of tenure-track positions who are expected to return to their position. (2) One fellowship is set aside for a postdoctoral research associate who at the time of application does not have a tenure-track faculty appointment. (3) In addition, one fellowship will be awarded to a senior scholar. All candidates must be based outside the United States.
  • During the academic year 2019-20, the Fung Global Fellows Program theme will be “Thinking Globally.” How people have thought about the planet has informed the institutions, norms, and policies that have pulled it together and torn it apart. For centuries, ideas of free trade, human rights or global governance have framed cooperation and competition, order and disorder. Such ideas have also spawned border-crossing movements, from campaigns to end slavery to commitments to reduce carbon emissions. In turn, global thinking and action have often reinforced commitments to national ideas and efforts to curb global exchange. The goal of this research theme is to explore how ideas framed the understanding of interests and the making of institutions that have yielded commonness and conflict across and within borders. We also want to understand how these ideas and practices came into being through scientific networks, foundations, and think tanks. The Program will also examine rival world ideas that have challenged prevailing orthodoxies. Nowadays, with cooperative norms under challenge, global institutions under stress, and a century of guiding ideas about global convergence in doubt, we want to take a broad look at where these ideas came from, their effects, and the prospects for intellectual renewal or rethinking. The goal of the 2019-20 Fung Global Fellows cohort will be to explore the ways people learned to rely on or to reject strangers far away, as well as to imagine how global relationships came to be and could be different. We welcome applicants from all disciplinary and inter-disciplinary fields from the sciences to the humanities whose work addresses this set of themes in any historical period or world region.
  • All candidates must reside outside the United States. To be eligible, postdoctoral applicants must have completed all requirements for their Ph.D. before August 1, 2019 but cannot have received their degrees more than three years prior to the start of the appointment on September 1, 2019. Early-career fellows must have received their Ph.D. or equivalent no earlier than September 1, 2009. Senior scholars, who have received their doctorates before 2009, must have faculty appointments and a record of scholarly accomplishment in the designated theme of the program. Fellowships will be awarded on the strength of a candidate’s proposed research project, the relationship of the project to the program theme, the candidate’s scholarly record, and the ability to contribute to the intellectual life of the program.
  • Applications are due on November 9, 2018.
