Assistant Professor in Environmental Humanities. We seek a candidate trained in Literature and the Environment to teach the introduction to Environmental Humanities; to team teach (in rotation) with Environmental Studies faculty the introduction to ES; to offer a sequence of upper level courses in EH in the English Department; and to contribute to the department’s W1 (first-year writing) offering and to its core courses, including Critical Theory. We prefer a specialist in Literature and the Environment who can teach interdisciplinary courses based in modern and contemporary literature and theory. Secondary areas might include digital humanities and the environment; law and literature; public humanities; or literature and environmental justice globally conceived.

Colby was the first college in the country to achieve carbon neutrality, and we have received numerous awards for sustainability. This commitment to environmental justice extends to the academic programs, and the English department has been a leader in Environmental Humanities. Supported by a major grant from the Mellon Foundation the College is developing a campus-wide transdisciplinary initiative in EH. Harvard University (USA:Mass) -Tenure-Track Faculty Position in Literature and the Environment[]

The Department of English seeks to appoint a tenure-track professor in Literature and the Environment. The successful candidate may be a scholar in any historical or cultural field of Anglophone literature. Knowledge of environmental science and familiarity with environmental literature in languages other than English will be favorably regarded. The appointment is expected to begin on July 1, 2020. The tenure-track professor will be responsible for teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels. They will also be expected to contribute to the intellectual life of the Faculty and University by pursing a full program of scholarly research and course development, advising undergraduate and graduate students, overseeing independent research projects, and engaging in an appropriate amount of service.

Millersville University of Pennsylvania (USA:Pa) - Assistant Professor of English: Ecostudies[]

The Department of English at Millersville University seeks an Assistant Professor of English with a focus in Ecostudies. The successful candidate may teach literature, theory, and writing courses as needed. Actual assignments will depend upon department needs. Four courses per semester, with potential for summer teaching. Current needs exist in both traditional and online learning environments. The successful candidate will be able to conduct classes through multifaceted teaching strategies for face-to-face classroom delivery and/or web-enhanced or web-based formats. May teach day, evening and/or weekend assignments. The Department of English, in the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, is comprised of 16 faculty members, one support staff member, and 260 students. The department offers degrees in English at the undergraduate and graduate level.

Required:
PhD in English or Comparative Literature (or related discipline), or ABD with Ph.D. by time of appointment, with a focus in Ecostudies (Ecoliterature, Ecocriticism, Posthumanism, etc.) or related field.
Specialization includes the study of literature as an interdisciplinary enterprise related to environmental issues.
Ability to teach writing at the college level.

Excellent oral, written and interpersonal communication skills.

The Princeton Environmental Institute invites applications at the assistant professor level from scholars specializing in the Environmental Humanities. Syracuse University (USA:Ny) - Associate Professor/Professor, Indigenous Environmental Studies[]

The Native American and Indigenous Studies Program at Syracuse University is seeking applications for a tenured professor in the emerging field of Indigenous Environmental Studies at the level of Associate or Full Professor.

This recruitment is part of an ambitious Invest Syracuse Cluster Hire Initiative with an interdisciplinary focus area of Global Environmental Change. Faculty hired in these positions will build on our existing strengths in Indigenous studies, geography, religion, earth sciences, and anthropology, and will participate in an organized research cluster that spans departments in the College of Arts and Sciences and the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs.

The Native American and Indigenous Studies Program at Syracuse is an interdisciplinary program composed of fourteen affiliated faculty members across several departments. We welcome candidates who can contribute to an inclusive environment, bring new perspectives on mentoring students from diverse backgrounds, implement novel approaches to field research, and value collegiality and collaboration.

The successful applicant will have a Ph.D. in either the humanities, social sciences or interdisciplinary studies related to Indigenous studies and the environment.

The candidate will have a strong multi-disciplinary background and the demonstrated potential to lead in their field and attract competitively awarded research funding. Successful candidates should have interest in working collaboratively across disciplines on global environmental issues. Teaching and research in the NAIS program would allow both interdepartmental collaboration and program development. Syracuse invites applications from individuals with a strong record of scholarship in fields that pertain to areas of Indigenous Environmental studies. These may include, but are not limited to, Environmental Humanities, Traditional Indigenous Conceptions of the Environment, Natural Resource Stewardship, Resource Development and Land Restoration with Indigenous Nations/communities, Indigenous Knowledge of Foods, Plants and Medicines with consideration for key issues such as water and climate change, and Environmental Law and Policy, Jurisdiction and Governance regarding Indigenous Sovereignty.

The English Department at the University of Wisconsin-Madison seeks applicants for two tenure-track appointments in Literary Studies and Environmental Humanities at the rank of Assistant Professor beginning in August 2020. We are looking for scholars whose work focuses on the relationship between literature and the environment in any historical period. We are especially interested in candidates with research and teaching expertise in one or more of the following areas: poetics, indigenous epistemologies, multi-species justice, earth systems science, critical theory, disability studies, and queer ecologies.

Principal Duties:

National University of Ireland, Galway - Lecturer in Contemporary Literature (Ecocriticism listed as desirable specialism)[]

Applications are invited for a full-time permanent appointment as Lecturer Above the Bar in English (Contemporary Literature) at NUI Galway.

The appointee will teach and research in the area of Contemporary Literature. They will also be expected to contribute to one or more of the following strategic development areas: Literature of North America; Global/World Literatures; Young Adult Literature; Digital Humanities; Ecocriticism. Applicants must hold a PhD in a relevant field and have experience in third-level teaching.

The discipline of English is the largest in the School of English and Creative Arts, with over 1000 undergraduates, 80 MA students and 30 PhD students. We teach a broad undergraduate curriculum, touching on all major historical periods and genres, and we run five taught MA programmes: the MA in English, MA in Literature and Publishing, MA in Culture and Colonialism, MA in Writing, and MA in Digital Cultures. Our staff also contribute to other programmes in Journalism, Creative Writing, Theatre Studies, Irish Studies and Digital Arts and Technology. Staff in English are closely associated with NUI Galway’s Moore Institute for Research in Humanities and Social Studies. There is a highly active research culture in English, and our staff have won major funding awards from the European Research Council, the Marie Sklodowska-Curie programme and the Irish Research Council. For the past two years we have been ranked among the top 150 English departments in the QS World University rankings.

For this post we are seeking a colleague who will contribute to developing our curriculum in Contemporary Literature, and assist us in developing new programmes of teaching and research.
