THE DEPARTMENT: The Department of English offers its diverse student population a rich array of courses in literature, language, creative writing, and composition. The B.A. in English fosters an understanding and appreciation of 1) the major works of British, American, and global literature, including works by and about ethnic and cultural minorities and women, 2) the history and structure of the English language, and 3) the aims and processes of creative and critical writing. In all its courses, the department helps students develop the advanced skills in reading, writing, and critical thinking necessary for successful careers.
The M. A. degree in English covers a range of periods, genres, and themes, and our program encourages students to participate in graduate student conferences and other professional arenas. Our students include high school teachers, those interested in community college teaching, creative writers, and others from a variety of professions who seek an enriching graduate-level experience. Some of our students apply for doctoral programs, and they benefit from the close relationships that they develop with our faculty. The other M.A. is in TESOL, a program that prepares students to teach adult-language learners and enrolls students from around the globe. Our 9 full-time faculty members are active scholars, creative writers, and passionate teachers.

DUTIES OF THE POSITION: The Department of English seeks a specialist in North-American literature and the environment with a strong background in eco-criticism and eco-humanities. The successful candidate will develop and teach courses in environmental literature and eco-criticism in the undergraduate and graduate program, and other coursework within the Department of English as assigned.
The successful candidate will be expected to actively participate in interdisciplinary collaboration with faculty and students in English and across disciplines including those in the humanities, social sciences, and sciences. In addition to teaching, all faculty are expected to sustain a record of scholarly work, advise majors, assist the department with administrative and/or committee work, and assume campus-wide committee responsibilities, including assessment of student learning. Please note that teaching assignments at California State University, East Bay include courses at the Hayward, Concord, and Online campuses.
RANK AND SALARY: Assistant Professor. Salary is dependent upon educational preparation and experience. Subject to budgetary authorization.

QUALIFICATIONS: Earned Ph.D. at time of appointment; a record of scholarship and of teaching pertaining to North American environmental literature; and a commitment to mentoring students from diverse educational and cultural backgrounds are required. Expertise in one or more of the following fields: American or global literatures, North American Indian/First Nations writing, ecofeminism, composition and rhetoric, and creative nonfiction is required. Because this position is connected to an interdisciplinary group focused on infusing sustainability across the curriculum and across the campus, candidates whose research focuses on literatures associated with climate change, renewable energy, and/or public advocacy/activism are preferred. The University of North Carolina at Charlotte invites applications for the position of assistant professor of English specializing in Ecostudies, beginning August 2016. The appointment is a 9-month tenure-track position. Required qualifications: PhD in English with a focus in Ecostudies (Ecocriticism, Ecofeminism, Postcolonial Ecocriticism, Queer Ecostudies, Posthumanism, or related area); area of specialization open, but preference given to applicants who have research and teaching interests in British Romanticism or Medieval literature. Applicants should provide evidence of a commitment to continued scholarly activity; experience in successful university teaching; and a commitment to promoting diversity in the department and college. Research-intensive faculty in the department typically teach a 2/2 load with opportunities for periodic research leave; teaching for this position will include graduate and undergraduate courses in the related subject area. The ability to contribute to emerging interdisciplinary programs in environmental studies is desirable. The Department of English comprises 34 full-time faculty and offers BA and MA degrees with area emphases in Literature, Creative Writing, Children's Literature, Linguistics, and Professional/Technical Writing. The program has over 400 majors and more than 80 graduate students. University of Virginia (VA) - TT Assistant/Associate Professor of English - Environmental Humanities (pref. pre-1900 focus)
The English Department and the Program in Environmental Thought and Practice at the University of Virginia invite applications for a tenure-track or tenured position in Environmental Humanities to begin Fall 2016 at the rank of assistant or associate professor. These hires are part of a broader, multiyear initiative on Humanities 2020: Research, Discovery and the Common Good funded in partnership by the Andrew H. Mellon Foundation and the College and Graduate School of Arts & Sciences. Applicants should provide evidence of sustained critical and pedagogical engagement with literature in relation to environmental and ecological studies, with Ph.D. in English or a related field in hand by August 25, 2016.
The candidate appointed to this position will teach two courses per semester, with courses shared and, where feasible, cross-listed between English and the Program in Environmental Thought and Practice. Teaching will include both undergraduate and graduate courses, with the expectation that the candidate will teach lower-division service courses as well as specialized seminars at the upper division and graduate levels while contributing service to both units. We are particularly interested in candidates whose work focuses on environmental and ecological themes (broadly construed) in relation to literature and culture before 1900. While we hope to make an appointment at the advanced assistant or associate level, we are open to applications from new or recent Ph.D. recipients as well. During the first year of the appointment the new hire will be appointed as an Andrew W. Mellon Fellow of the Institute of Humanities and Global Cultures and will receive one course release. The Fellow will be an actively engaged member of the IHGC community and will serve on the IHGC Faculty Advisory Committee.

Westminster College (UT) - Assistant Professor of Environmental Studies (Environmental Literature)
Westminster College in Salt Lake City, Utah, seeks an interdisciplinary scholar whose work is grounded in activist or critical approaches to Environmental Literature with an emphasis on gender. This position begins in August, 2016, and will be hired at the rank of Assistant Professor. The 24 credit teaching assignment will include the team-taught interdisciplinary introductory course, upper division courses in the candidate's areas of expertise, and courses within the WCore Liberal Education program. We seek an excellent teacher with demonstrated ability to facilitate active student engagement and to provide effective mentoring to undergraduate researchers. Experience with team teaching, community engagement, field experiences, and other innovative learning designs is desired. We seek an energetic colleague who will participate actively in the management of our vibrant program and the ongoing development of our innovative curriculum.
The Environmental Studies program at Westminster College is an interdisciplinary program with concentrations in humanities, science, and the civic environment.
