The Departments of Chemical Engineering (ChemE) and Materials Science & Engineering (MSE) at the University of Washington invite applications for one full-time tenure-track faculty position (9-month service periods) that will be jointly appointed in the two departments. The successful candidate will have an outstanding record of high impact research that is advancing the battery chemistry and materials fields, as well as an outstanding scholarly vision for innovative research and education as a faculty member. We are primarily focused on hires at the rank of Associate or Full Professors. Applicants must have a Ph.D. or foreign equivalent doctorate degree in Materials Science Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a related discipline by the date of appointment. This position is part of a multi-year Clean Energy Institute (CEI) hiring campaign to build excellence that spans the scales of a clean energy economy, from molecular discovery to grid systems and operations. The candidate we seek here will be an interdisciplinary scholar with expertise in one or more areas of advanced battery chemistry and materials. Areas of particular interest include, but are not limited to, new and innovative battery electrodes, electrolytes, and separators; unique electrode and device architecture and processing; testing, degradation, and life modeling; and in-situ & ex-situ characterization for novel applications in consumer electronic, stationary and transportation fields. They will be expected to teach both undergraduate and graduate courses within the two departments, to develop high quality interdisciplinary research programs and to position the departments to better serve the needs of society for advanced energy storage solutions. The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) at the University of Washington (UW) is in an ambitious, multiyear period of growth and renewal. As part of this expansion, applications are being solicited for a full-time, tenure-track faculty position in water quality engineering, with focus on innovative approaches in water and wastewater treatment. We are particularly interested in the development and application of new materials, molecules, and technologies for treatment processes, including, for example: enzymatic approaches to contaminant degradation and directed transformations, optimization of community-level microbial functions for targeted contaminant transformations and/or generation of beneficial products, engineered materials for reaction-based treatment processes, and advanced inorganic or organic materials for adsorption and filtration processes.
Successful candidates are expected to leverage existing department and university strengths in the fields of bio-, molecular, and/or materials engineering to enable development of highly efficient, selective, and less resource intensive water and wastewater treatment processes. Innovation at scales ranging from the molecular to the community, including process and reactor engineering, is welcome. Candidates should therefore have a strong foundation for interdisciplinary research and successful collaborative investigations with colleagues in relevant physical, biological, chemical, and/or engineering subdisciplines.
Successful candidates will also have a strong interest in teaching and mentoring, contributing to the existing range of courses and to the development of innovative undergraduate and graduate curricula that integrate across traditional civil and environmental engineering and science disciplines.
Candidates at the rank of Assistant Professor are strongly encouraged, but those with an established reputation as a leader in their field will also be considered at the rank of Associate Professor. A PhD, or foreign equivalent, in civil or environmental engineering, or a related discipline is required.
