The position will be hosted in the Department of Asian and North African Studies. The Department has recently received a “Department of Excellence” Award by the Italian Ministry of Education, Universities and Research. The Excellence Award has allowed the department to receive additional state funding to develop innovative projects for the creation of the Marco Polo International Research Centre (MaP) Centre for Global Europe-Asia Connections. The aim is to foster scientific cooperation at international level on innovative topics such as new religious identities, migrations, climate change and the history of relations between Europe, Asia and the Arab and Islamic world in a Transcultural perspective.

Thanks to the wide array of activities and subjects offered by the Department, students can learn and explore Asian languages and their cultural context.

The skills and scientific interests of the DSAAM faculty members cover a wide geographic area from Africa to Japan. The specific fields of interest, often cross-disciplinary, can be divided into four main areas: linguistics, philology and literature; religions and philosophy; archaeology and cultural heritage conservation, figurative arts and performances; history, institutions, economics, society, politics and international relations. The Department has strong international ties for educational, research and cultural purposes, which result in events, research fundings, Joint and Double Degree programmes and mobility opportunities for students and staff members.

Teaching activities include at least 60 hours of curricular and integrative teaching as per the "University Regulations for the attribution and verification of teaching and service tasks" in the first and second cycle degrees courses offered by the Department of Asian and North African Studies. Specifically the researcher’s teaching activity will be related to the scientific area of Languages and Literatures of China and Southeast Asia and will consist in teaching Thai language, covering the four skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing and combining communicative activities, structure practice and grammar. The candidate is also expected to teach Thai literature, culture and society through the study of texts.

The candidate will be expected to teach undergraduate courses at all year levels, covering Asian film and media cultures as well as other aspects of the Film Studies curriculum. The Department of Chinese (https://www.LN.edu.hk/chi/) offers courses at both bachelor and postgraduate levels. The Bachelor of Arts (Hons) degree programme includes areas of classical, modern and contemporary Chinese literature, Chinese language and linguistics, comparative literature and literary theories, as well as media, news and creative writing. The programme emphasizes multi-perspective literary studies as well as creative writing and communicative skills. The appointee will teach mainly in the areas of modern literature and culture (including late Qing period). He/She is also expected to contribute to the Department’s various research and teaching initiatives.

General Requirements

Candidates should have a PhD degree in the relevant discipline. For appointment as Associate Professor, candidates should have at least five years of relevant experience and a good track record in research and scholarly activities. An appointment as Assistant Professor is also a possibility for junior candidates who have relevant teaching experience (at least three years) and a good research record.

Appointment

The conditions of appointment will be competitive. The rank and remuneration will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. Kyoto Consortium for Japanese Studies (JAPAN: Kyoto) - Postdoctoral Fellowship[]

The Kyoto Consortium for Japanese Studies is searching for a KCJS Postdoctoral Fellow for the academic year 2020-21, with the possibility of extension. Based at Doshisha University in Kyoto, KCJS is an undergraduate study abroad program governed by a consortium of thirteen American universities and administered by the Center for Undergraduate Global Engagement at Columbia University.

The KCJS Fellow is expected to engage in their own research and teach one course each semester in Kyoto. Designed in consultation with the resident director and taught entirely in English, the courses can focus on the fellow’s area of specialization, yet should be accessible enough to appeal to undergraduates with a broad range of interests. Course plans should take full advantage of KCJS’s location, preferably encompassing local excursions, hands-on demonstrations, and/or observations. Preference will be given to candidates with the capacity to execute such courses and those who can demonstrate a commitment to delivering engaging, immersive learning experiences that are both rigorous and accessible.

Additional responsibilities include: assisting the resident director with academic planning and semester orientations; mentoring students on academic matters, career planning, and life in Japan; assisting the resident director in reviewing independent study proposals and summer research proposals; supervising independent studies; presenting their research regularly; and contributing to the intellectual and cultural life of the program by occasionally attending curricular and extra-curricular events. These responsibilities and other professional development opportunities provide the Fellow with strong teaching experience and a broad overview into undergraduate global education. The Fellow is also expected to engage in the academic life of Kyoto through involvement in research study groups at Doshisha and other local institutions.

Candidates should hold a Ph.D. in a Japan-related field by the start of the fellowship. It is preferred that the candidate has relevant undergraduate teaching experience, previous experience living or studying in Japan, and Japanese language and cultural fluency.

The term of appointment is from August 1, 2020 to May 31, 2021, with the possibility of an extension to May 2022, pending mutual agreement and the approval of the relevant committee.

The Association Dean will join the College and Graduate School of Arts & Sciences, which is the oldest and largest of UVa’s 11 schools and offers over 50 undergraduate majors and more than two dozen graduate programs. Our many courses span the entire range of liberal arts, including the social sciences, arts, humanities and physical sciences, with many opportunities for interdisciplinary studies as well.

The Association Dean in the College provides academic oversight, coordinates advising, and administers the rules of the faculty for approximately 900-1200 undergraduates. The Association Dean will teach one course a year in an academic department of the College, provide leadership in the administrative programs of the College that support the undergraduate experience, and perform additional administrative duties as assigned by the Associate Dean. The successful candidate will be entering Arts & Sciences in the midst of curricular change. This is a full-time, twelve-month, non-tenure track, renewable three-year term appointment as Assistant Professor, General Faculty.

Qualifications include an appropriate terminal degree in the liberal arts and sciences (at the time of application), a theoretical understanding of what a liberal arts education entails, and a minimum of 3 years of advising and teaching experience at the college level in a liberal arts and sciences discipline.
