NOTES:

  • If you apply here, make sure that you are prepared to be systematically abused.
  • Should I state that I am prepared for systematic abuse in the opening or closing paragraph of cover letter? Please advise.
  • I'd think either would work. As long as you're ready to be shouted at (and then, later, for it to be pretended that this shouting never happened; and you should be prepared for people to say "oh, this is what happens at every university!"; but it is not; AUS English is absolutely the worst place to work; do not work there).

  • Has everyone's Interfolio delivery changed so that a writing sample is now required, but no option to upload is available? Just wondering if that's a general change.
  • Yes mine says this. Nice catch. x3
  • Can the candidate who noted above that they received a "request for writing sample" on 11/19 specify if they received an email asking for this or if they simply noticed the new field in the Interfolio delivery? Perhaps the field was added to the application in general but is only "active" for the candidates who have been invited to upload to it.
  • Yes, I received an email on 11/19 requesting a writing sample, and was able to upload one via Interfolio. I suspect that you're right that the field was added to the application in general but was only active for specific candidates. I assume that this is just an Interfolio quirk, but it feels like an unintentionally cruel marker of withholding! Sincerely wishing everyone the best here.
  • Thanks for the clarification. Best of luck to everyone.

NOTES:

RE: no reported contact post Skype interviews

  • Any news here after Dec. Skype interviews (as of 1/18)?
  • The ad states that Skype interviews will be held in mid-December and it's now 12/8. Has anyone heard from this job yet, one way or another?
  • This is quite obviously a fake search. I wouldn't give too much to wondering about this job if I were you.
  • I don't know if it's fake, but it certainly appears that there is likely a preferred internal candidate.
  • I agree with this assessment. See also Auburn, Emory-Oxford, and other jobs from last year. Inside hires are more common than one would like to think.
  • [Interloper] The VAP who just started there this fall has a background that matches the job description and who did her MA at Clark. This is clearly a fake search.
  • [Interloper, Faculty] Having seen many searches over many years that involve a local person qualified for a position, I cannot emphasize enough how frequently that local person does not get, or even apply for, the job. There are so many moving parts involved in any job posting that it's not even worth speculating. The *majority* of "insider" scenarios I'm familiar with result in an exogamous hire.
  • Karen Kelsy (aka The Professor Is In) has written extensively on this topic in her book and a series of blog posts here, here, and here. They all suggest that for a variety of reasons internal candidates are far from a sure thing. Do not despair.

So, if you haven't heard from them post-interview, then you might also be an alternate. There's no timeline right now for alternates, but I suspect we will hear back some time in March one way or the other.

RE: Campus Visits

  • Any news yet of campus visit invitations? (12/2)
  • I haven't heard anything since the Skype interview (12/3)
  • Same here (12/3) though in my experience this is not a good sign!
  • Thanks to those of you who responded last week. Just reaching out one more time: I received a post-interview update last week from the chair indicating that campus visit invitations would likely be sent out this week. Did others receive such an e-mail, and has anyone heard anything since? (12/13)
  • I got the same message; have heard nothing since, and am assuming they have already contacted finalists, but it is possible that they've been delayed for some reason. (12/13)
  • Has an offer been made? (2/20)

RE: Submission Portal

  • Yikes, Workday is really not allowing this application process to be straightforward. Anyone have any insights about how to upload everything they're asking for as a single pdf under 5 MB and also how to include actual recommendation letters with the application? I'm stumped. (11/1)
  • Just combine all your docs into a single .pdf and upload it as 'Resume/CV' right at the start of the application.  As far as attaching actual letters of rec, I have no idea.  I went by the job ad and only attached a list of references that could be contacted.
  • It's a nightmare. I uploaded separate docs in the same place that held my previously uploaded CV--it was on the third or fourth page. I included a References list with the Interfolio email links. That's about as good as I can do. (11/2)
  • Thanks. Good to know multiple docs can be added to the CV area.
