• I interviewed with Colgate at MLA for this position and haven't heard a thing since. If one or more MLA interviewees have already been rejected, as per the 1/27 note above, and campus interviews have been scheduled I guess all remaining candidates are in that limbo of "not out of the game but not quite in either." Would be nice to know either way but I understand their reason for keeping silent for as long as possible (2/9).
• I'm the one who posted the rejection. I emailed them to ask about the status of the search. They didn't actually reject me, they just said that they had already scheduled campus visits and that I wasn't one of their choices, but that I would still be in the pool if none of the campus visits worked out. I think that will be our status until they make a hire.

• Don't know about this particular search, but my sense is that the UK hiring process is much more streamlined and expeditious than the US process. Candidates are usually interviewed in a single group on campus and a hiring decision is often made on the same day. Has anyone ever seen a search committee ask for additional materials over the course of multiple weeks? Isn't that unusual?

• A: Rolling requests for additional materials are not that unusual, although these requests are notable for the number of different dates. But it's nothing unheard of. Different SC's work in different ways.
• I'm basing this on nothing but a hunch, but I suspect some of the people who posted they received a request for additional materials are referring to the request to fill out the EEO form via interfolio. It's pretty confusing, frankly, and had this been my first year on the market or if I were less familiar with the wiki, I likely would have thought that email was a request for additional materials (the email subject is "Request for Information" and it's a pretty vague email signed by the search committee chair with no direct mention of an EEO form). I assume many of these are real RFAMs and that Oberlin did rolling requests, but I also suspect some are not RFAMs, which would explain why the dates of receipt cover the course of so many weeks.

They sent out an email indicating that they would be scheduling MLA interviews on January 3. (x 7 on 12/19). I got the same email but found it somewhat cryptic. Were all candidates being sent the same message, or had some selection process already taken place? 

I got this e-mail as well and found it very cryptic. My guess would be that they have narrowed the applicant pool and are letting the "short listed" candidates know that they are under consideration, but I am not holding my breath here. If it happens great, but I have just been in this position too many times to really be enthusiastically bouncing off the walls.

I received it, as well, and I would be shocked if I were short-listed with UC Riverside. I think it's a mass email sent to everyone who applied basically informing everyone that MLA decisions were coming very late, so don't expect any word or email the chair of committee until then. I don't think they've narrowed the pool down yet.

I feel sure that if they'd made a cut, the email would have indicated that in some way or at least used our names in a salutation. Typically those emails contain a greeting with the applicant's name and they clearly let the applicant know that the search committee is continuing to pursue his/her application.

After reading this article it totally make sense now why this search is a mess. Apparently, the same bureaucrats who designed the malfunctioning healthcare.gov website also worked on the UC Riverside application site.

University of South Dakota - VAP, Early American Lit. - POSITION FILLED

The University of South Dakota invites applications for a Visiting Assistant Professor with a specialization in early American Literature for the 2014-15 academic year, with the possibility of conversion to tenure-track in the second year. Teaching responsibilities may include a survey of American Literature before 1865, Introduction to Literary Criticism, and other undergraduate and graduate courses in early American Literature and/or introductory composition. Excellence in teaching is expected, both in the classroom and in mentoring students outside the classroom. An ongoing research agenda is assumed.

Housed in the College of Arts and Sciences, USD's English Department offers BA/BS, MA, and PhD degrees. USD is the state's flagship liberal arts university. Teaching experience and a PhD in English are required; publications and presentations are desirable. Initial appointment runs August 22, 2014 to May 21, 2015. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Is it just me, or does this seem to be a slow/late year? In the second week of December, there are still something like 30 jobs with pre-MLA deadlines on this page with no interviews scheduled. Maybe the people getting the interviews just aren't updating the Wiki?

• Always possible. Also, delayed postings are possibly a factor. But don't underestimate the impact of the fact that MLA is still actually one month away and committees have more time than they used to make interview decsions. They can go right up until Christmas Eve. [12/11]

Q: Was the Dartmouth Americanist job canceled? It's no longer on the wiki or jil.

A: It expired from the JIL on Nov. 8th (no reason to suspect it's canceled--just an expired posting). Was it ever on the Wiki? I seem to recall it (and Xavier) never made it to the Wiki for some reason.

OP: Thanks--I found it "expired" on the JIL after posting, but was almost certain it had been on the wiki before. If not then perhaps someone can add it? (I'm not sure how to do the formatting, etc., or would do it myself.)

Please stop deleting (or explain why you're deleting) this prompt for discussion: What is going on with all of the requests for more materials before the deadline? Xavier? Oberlin? I've been on the market in the past, and I don't remember this happening. So they're selecting the first cut before everyone's applied? I hadn't even sent in my application to Xavier before they'd already selected their first round. 

• I think deletion was accidential (*please* use PREVIEW before hitting edit ... editing sections whenever possible instead of the entire page also cuts back on the problem). Anyway, as to your question, it isn't that uncommon for schools to send out rolling materials requests. Some places do this every year. I don't think you should assume, just because you weren't asked in the first round of requests, that you are totally out of play, esp. if the deadline hasn't passed yet. There may be several more batches of requests. Some SC's prefer to work this way. 
• Thanks Una! I don't recall rolling requests before the deadline (especially when the ads specifically state they'll begin reviewing applications after that date), though I do remember rolling requests after the deadline. It's not so much that I'm upset by the idea that I've not made the first cut as it is that I wonder if this is such a good/ethical way for search committee members to make the first round cuts. In theory, everyone is given the same chance to impress the committee, but let's face it, when members are screening a few applications at a time in the beginning when the applications are just trickling in, it's very different than when you're plowing through 300 applications at one time. I know that if I'm still on the market next year, I'm going to apply far, far earlier so that I am one of the ones being compared to 50 other applicants rather than hundreds.
