The Department of Anthropology at Emory University (Atlanta, GA) invites applications for two tenure track positions in cultural anthropology to begin Fall 2021. We seek scholars at the rank of assistant or associate professor who address contemporary issues of pressing concern. Broadly speaking, our hiring focus will prioritize interest in and theoretical engagement with race, power, difference, and inequality, activist anthropology, ethics and humanitarianism, and social movements.  We are particularly interested in anthropologists who work in one or more of the following areas (listed alphabetically): food insecurity and environment; gender and sexuality; migration, borders, and refugees; and well-being, health, and mental health.

Candidates should be willing and able to regularly teach general courses in cultural anthropology along with courses in their area of expertise both at undergraduate and graduate levels. They also should be willing to mentor undergraduate and graduate students. Candidates must have a doctoral degree, excellent research record, and a demonstrated commitment to teaching.

Furman University: Assistant/Associate/Professor in Anthropology of Race and Ethnicity (Deadline: Dec 28, 2020)[]

Position commences in August 2021. Candidate must be committed to developing high-impact, engaged learning experiences for undergraduates (see The Furman Advantage for more on this campus-wide priority). Candidate should engage with critical questions in anthropology, including critical race theory, and demonstrate attention to the broader context of anthropology in contemporary society. Secondary field specialization is open. Furman’s teaching load is 3-2.  In addition to courses in the candidate’s areas of specialty, candidate will ideally be prepared to teach Anthropology of Race and Ethnicity, Cultural Anthropology, and anthropological theory and methods.

Candidate will have the ability to work with historically underrepresented students, including students of color, and to assist the university in its continuing efforts to become a model of inclusive excellence.  Ph.D. in Anthropology or related field is required at the time of appointment.

Georgetown University Walsh School of Foreign Service: Assistant Professor of Security and Emerging Technology (Deadline: November 1, 2020)[]

The Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University invites applications for the position of tenure-track Assistant Professor of security studies with a focus on the intersection of emerging technologies (and specifically artificial intelligence) and international security. This will be the inaugural hire for the Gracias Family Chair in Security and Emerging Technology. Candidates from all relevant disciplines are invited to apply, but must have a demonstrated track record of scholarly research focused on the implications of artificial intelligence for international security. The ideal candidate would have enough relevant technical skills in the area of artificial intelligence to teach courses in the subfield of international security affairs; apply the relevant technical knowledge in his or her research and publications; and have the scholarly trajectory to make a major contribution to this emerging field.

Qualifications The search committee welcomes applications from a diverse representation of scholars who at a minimum expect to complete their Ph.D by the time of appointment for the 2021 fall semester.

The Juilliard School - assistant professor of liberal arts and anthropology (review begins April 6, 2021)[]

The Department of Liberal Arts at the Juilliard School seeks applicants for a full-time, non-tenure-track, assistant professor. Successful applicants will teach in the department’s writing, core, and elective curricula. Candidates must have experience in teaching First Year Composition and must be dedicated to the department’s core curriculum, which emphasizes critical reading and writing, cross-cultural thinking, and the humanities and social sciences. A disciplinary specialization in the social sciences, especially political anthropology, cultural anthropology, sociology, geography, or social psychology, is preferred. Opportunities to teach electives in the field of specialization will be provided. The ideal candidate will demonstrate skills in interdisciplinary and collaborative pedagogy. Candidates must have the Ph.D. in hand upon application, must have significant teaching experience as instructor of record and the ability to work with a wide range of constituencies (staff, students, faculty, and administrators) with diplomacy and tact.

The successful candidate will be expected to teach six courses per year. While Juilliard does not grant tenure, new faculty can expect, after two years of service on annual contracts, to earn renewable three-year contracts.

Kalamazoo College: ASSISTANT PROFESSOR OF SOCIOLOGY & ANTHROPOLOGY (Deadline: Oct. 1, 2020)[]

Kalamazoo College invites applications for a tenure track position at the assistant professor level in the Anthropology and Sociology Department. A focus on international political ecology and the ability to teach a quantitative research methods course are required. As a truly joint department, all courses offered seek to blur the boundaries between the two disciplines.

The successful candidate will demonstrate a high aptitude for and interest in undergraduate teaching, including contributing to the College’s “Shared Passages” core curriculum (first-year, sophomore, and senior seminars), a commitment to the liberal arts, and a desire to involve undergraduates in scholarship both in and out of the classroom. Cultural Anthropology and Development Sociology (CADS) at Leiden University studies the everyday practices of individuals, groups, and communities worldwide, to situate them within complex global challenges. Our CADS research program Global Vulnerabilities and Social Resilience focusses on three areas of research: Sustainability, Diversity, and Digitalization. At CADS we propagate a signature methodology consisting of a unique mix of qualitative, quantitative, digital and visual methods grounded in ethnographic fieldwork. We do this research along both disciplinary and interdisciplinary lines, together with our academic and preferred societal partners. The CADS teaching program is home to a vibrant student community consisting of as many as 25 nationalities. Diversity is key to who we are and what we do; in creating an inclusive learning environment where a diversity of experiences and perspectives is fully supported, in our own research and in appointing research and teaching staff.

Mount Saint Mary's University - African American Cultural Studies[]

The College of Liberal Arts of Mount St. Mary’s University in Emmitsburg, Maryland, is conducting a search for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of African-American Cultural Studies. Beginning in Fall 2021, the successful candidate will also guide the African and African-American Studies minor. We desire someone who can diversify and complement the existing strengths and course offerings of the College of Liberal Arts. North Carolina State University: Assistant Professor in Sociocultural Anthropology with a focus on Medical Anthropology (Deadline: October 10, 2020)--Position filled[]

North Carolina State University, Raleigh, NC. The Department of Sociology and Anthropology is accepting applications for an assistant professor (tenure-track) appointment as a cultural anthropologist with a focus on medical anthropology to begin Fall 2021. Qualifications: Ph.D. in Anthropology by start date (anticipated 8/16/2021); strong record or promise of research and publication, including potential for obtaining extramural funding; strong commitment to student mentorship. Teaching load is two courses per semester for research active faculty. Candidates should be prepared to teach undergraduate and graduate courses. While specific research topic is open, geographic area of specialization must lie outside Latin America and candidates should have a strong background in ethnographic research. The Department of Anthropology at The Pennsylvania State University seeks an energetic and creative colleague for the position of Curator of the Matson Museum of Anthropology and Director of Outreach at the rank of Researcher, Assistant or Associate Research Professor. This non-tenure track position reports to the Head of the Department of Anthropology and works closely with an advisory committee of department faculty to plan and implement museum programming. The individual in this role oversees all museum-related activities including curation and digitization of museum and teaching collections, development and management of exhibits, and coordination of educational and outreach efforts. The Department of Cultural, Environmental, and Global Studies (CEGS) at Salve Regina University invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor of Sociology position starting September 1, 2022. We seek a colleague with expertise and interest in teaching, research and advising undergraduates in a joint Sociology/Anthropology major and with specialization in race and ethnic relations.  Secondary areas of teaching and research interest in urban/rural sociology, quantitative methods, environmental sociology and immigration are also encouraged.  Our curriculum is aligned with the mission of Salve Regina University that prioritizes social justice, stewardship of the earth, and principled problem-solving.

The Curator of Ethnology is responsible for curating the museum’s collection of cultural material from around the world, and for interpreting its community, public and intellectual significance through research, exhibits, education and outreach. The Curator’s specialty is open, but preference will be given to an ethnographic focus on North and Central America because the strength of the collection is in these regions. This collection includes a broad range of objects (e.g., traditional clothing, household items, ritual paraphernalia, art), as well as more intangible materials (e.g., images, archives). The Museum ethnology collections also includes objects from East Asia and non-western art, and materials from the Mediterranean including Classical Archaeology (e.g., Greek and Roman artifacts).

In the Department of Anthropology, the successful candidate will teach undergraduate courses and mentor interns related to museum anthropology, material culture, heritage, cultural awareness, and anthropological theory. The candidate for this position will provide mentorship and instruction in our graduate program as well, and be expected to teach graduate level courses in their specialization. The teaching load is 1:1.

University of Oklahoma: Ranked Renewable Term Faculty Position, General Education Course “Gateway to Belonging” (deadline April 15th)[]
