The associate professorship is a permanent, full-time position, commencing on 1 January 2019 or as soon as possible thereafter.

Job description: We are looking for a candidate with a strong understanding of, and training within, the general field of social/cultural anthropology and a core research expertise within visual anthropology, in particular relating to the utilisation of audio-visual methods in data collection, analysis and dissemination. A research focus on the shaping of particular forms of knowledge and authority would be particularly welcome. This includes the knowledge systems prevalent in the ethnographic field itself, as well as the ways of knowing allowed by ethnographic film or other visual engagements.

The successful applicant will be responsible for planning, developing and teaching anthropology at the department at BA, MA and PhD level, with a key focus on our popular MA track specialisation in visual anthropology. In addition, the successful applicant must be able to teach other general courses in anthropology (see language requirements/expectations below). We emphasise the importance of maintaining a dedicated and respectful relationship between staff and students, so the ideal candidate should be able to demonstrate and exemplify their commitment to participatory teaching initiatives and student involvement as part of their teaching portfolio.

We seek earlier-stage candidates with a PhD and/or JD with the potential for exemplary empirical scholarship in law and the social sciences. Research area, discipline, and methodology are open. The ABF is strongly committed to diversity in hiring.

The ABF is an independent, scholarly research institute committed to social science research on law, legal institutions, and legal processes. Its faculty consists of leading scholars in the fields of law, sociology, psychology, political science, economics, history, and anthropology.

Research Professors work independently and are responsible for identifying appropriate topics for research, seeking external funding when possible, conducting research, and authoring books and articles to be published in scholarly journals. The Department of Anthropology at Brandeis University seeks a sociocultural or linguistic anthropologist with expertise in digital technologies and culture for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position, to begin July 1, 2019. We envision a scholar who works on digital worlds as emergent from and constitutive of specific cultural, economic, political, and historical contexts. Possible specializations might include, but are not limited to, the internet and social media; language and semiosis; science, technology, and society; race/ethnicity, class, and/or LGBTQ+ identities; political and social action; governance and surveillance; infrastructures and labor; subjectivity, embodiment, and knowledge; and intersections of technology and value. Any of these specializations might also draw on innovative uses of digital technologies in research and teaching and might contribute to the department's new laboratory in media and ethnographic arts. Brown University (RI) - TT Open Rank Professor - Climate Change - Deadline: 1 Oct. 2018[]

Tenure-track Assistant, Associate or Full Professor in Climate Change Department of Anthropology and Institute at Brown for Environment and Society Brown University

The Department of Anthropology and the Institute at Brown for Environment and Society (IBES) seek candidates of any rank for an endowed university chair in the area of climate change. This is part of a broader search by IBES that seeks to fill endowed university chairs with a tenure or tenure-track home in a participating department. The broader search invites applications from rising leaders in the public health, natural, social, and environmental justice aspects of climate change to create a multidisciplinary network of collaborative research.

Specifically, the Department of Anthropology seeks to hire an anthropologist of the environment with a focus on climate change. The successful applicant will have an outstanding record of research and teaching that complements the strengths of both the Department of Anthropology and IBES, with an interest in working across both units. Theoretical and conceptual approaches may include, but are not limited to: political ecology, science and technology studies, and other perspectives that explore climate change and its impact on society and human life. Topics may include, but are not limited to: human and environmental health; relationships between local and elite knowledge practices, biodiversity conservation, climate change advocacy, environmental governance, and climate justice. Candidates of any rank will be considered. The endowed chairs are named faculty positions that include a small fund in perpetuity (in addition to start up funds) to assist chair holders in achieving their research and teaching goals. DIRECTOR, Science, Technology, and Society Program (Tenure Track, OPEN RANK, Associate/Full Professor Preferred) - The College of Liberal Arts at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo invites applications for a full-time, academic-year tenure-track position of Assistant/Associate/Full Professor and Director of Science, Technology, and Society (STS) Program, beginning September 12, 2019. The position includes a strong expectation for teaching excellence, scholarly productivity and professional development, and service to the department, college, university, and community. Candidates must demonstrate the ability to lead the growth and operation of the STS minors and emerging interdisciplinary programs, including a possible Interdisciplinary Studies (IS) major and department, and other opportunities. The successful candidate should demonstrate leadership ability, a broad vision for the future of STS/IS in the College of Liberal Arts at Cal Poly, and the ability to effectively collaborate across disciplines. This position carries both teaching and administrative duties. Credit toward tenure may be awarded depending on years of teaching experience, professional development, and rank. The typical teaching load in Cal Poly's College of Liberal Arts is 12 units per quarter, with correspondingly reasonable research/scholarship and service expectations. Candidates will also have a significant reduction in course load in the first one to two years to help establish an active program of research/scholarship/creative activity and to oversee the leadership of the STS/IS Program. For this position, teaching and service assignments will be divided between the interdisciplinary programs and the home department in proportions agreeable to all parties. The successful candidate will teach courses such as Introduction to Science, Technology, and Society; Advanced Project-Based Learning in Science, Technology, and Society; Interdisciplinary Research Methods; and/or specific courses as determined by areas of expertise and programmatic need. The successful candidate will be expected to communicate effectively and work cooperatively with students, faculty, staff, and administration.

MFA or other terminal Masters Degree would qualify as a terminal degree in the following CLA disciplines: MFA for Art and Theatre; MA/MS for Journalism and Graphic Communication. Evidence of successful university teaching and programmatic leadership are required. California State University San Bernardino (CA) -  TT Assistant Professor, Ethnic Studies (with open disciplinary concentration) - Review Begins: 15 Nov. 2018[]

The College of Social & Behavioral Sciences (SBS) invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor in Ethnic Studies. We seek a colleague whose work is comparative, relational, and interdisciplinary. Preferred areas of teaching and research include expertise in one or more of the following areas: African American Studies, Asian American and Pacific Islander Studies, Chicanx/Latinx Studies, and/or Native American Studies.The tenure home will be within an existing SBS department or the School of Social Work, therefore candidates must have formal graduate training and evidence of research and teaching that aligns with one of SBS' nine academic disciplines. Central Washington University (CWU) - TT Asst. Professor - Medical Anthropology - Review begins: Dec. 16 2018[]

The Department of Anthropology and Museum Studies in the College of the Sciences at Central Washington University invites applications for a tenure track, full-time position in medical anthropology, to begin September 16, 2019. We are seeking a sociocultural anthropologist with expertise in critical medical anthropology and global health. The successful candidate must be grounded in ethnographic methodologies, have prior teaching experience, and have a PhD in hand by April 15, 2019. We prefer candidates who are broadly trained to address issues of health from mixed-method perspectives and at different scales, with expertise in environment and health, social epidemiology, health disparities, social justice, migration and health, and/or medical pluralism. Geographical area is open, but areas of particular interest include Africa, Asia, Southeast Asia, Latin America, or the Middle East.     

The successful candidate is expected to teach classes at all levels of the curriculum. Courses to be covered include several sections of Cultural Worlds (Introduction to Cultural Anthropology), introductory medical anthropology, contemporary issues in medical anthropology, and one or more of the following: history/theory of anthropology, gender, and a geographic area course.

Central Washington University is on the quarter system with appointments from mid-September through mid-June. We are particularly interested in candidates who (1) have demonstrated excellence in teaching; (2) are broadly trained to address issues of health from mixed-method perspectives and at different scales; and (3) can help further our development of a Cultural Competencies Certificate, including collaborations in medical anthropology and global health, between the Department of Anthropology and the University’s Health Career Programs.

The College of Charleston's School of Languages, Cultures and World Affairs ( LCWA ) invites applications for a position as a tenure-track Assistant Professor of International Studies to begin August 16, 2019. The International Studies program is interested in candidates whose teaching and research focus on global public health and/or gender and sexuality studies. The Social Science Division at the University of Chicago invites applications from scholars working on Race and Capitalism. The appointment would be based in the Anthropology, Political Science or Sociology department. A goal of this search is to increase the diversity of the faculty in the Division, and we therefore welcome applicants who come from groups historically underrepresented in the discipline, such as Black/African American, Hispanic/Latino, American Indian, or Alaskan Native.

We are broadly searching for scholars who theoretically and/or empirically explore the interaction of race and capitalism. The work could be focused on a historical period such as that of slavery; a specific institution such as the workplace; on concepts such as labor, credit, finance; on a specific theoretical question such as the meaning of justice in the context of communities that are affected by high levels of economic and racial inequality; or a particular empirical problem such as shifting participation rates by race and ethnicity in various sectors of the deindustrialized U.S. While we are very much open to various approaches to the study of race and capitalism, we would not be willing to entertain scholars whose work overwhelmingly focuses on either race or capitalism largely to the exclusion of the other.

The successful candidate will be appointed as either an Assistant Professor, or as a Provost Postdoctoral Fellow with an initial one or two-year appointment at the faculty rank of instructor. The appointment as a Provost Postdoctoral Fellow is intended to provide some relief from teaching in lieu of a postdoctoral appointment for the same period outside of the University. During the term as a Provost Postdoctoral Fellow, the successful candidate will teach only one course per year. At the end of the initial term, Provost Postdoctoral Fellows will ordinarily be promoted to Assistant Professor.

University of North Texas (TX) - TT Asst. Professor - Applied Cultural Anthropology - Campus Interview Stage[]

The Department of Anthropology at the University of North Texas invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor position in applied cultural anthropology for Fall 2019. The UNT Department of Anthropology is distinguished as part of a unique group of departments offering MA and MS degrees in applied anthropology. Our faculty research addresses current social and cultural issues in the areas of environmental and ecological anthropology; medical anthropology and public health; anthropology of education; business, technology, and design; migration and borders; and urban anthropology. We are looking for research and teaching specialization that intersects and bridges the scholarship of current faculty members.

Responsibilities of the successful applicant will include teaching undergraduate and graduate anthropology courses, particularly courses in their specialty area. Other courses may include methods, theory, or a geographic area. The successful applicant will be prepared to develop applied field and/or class projects that educate students in anthropological praxis, mentor graduate students, be willing to teach distance education courses, maintain an active research agenda, and contribute to the service of the department, college, and university.

Was the deadline extended? I applied back in September, and it's been so long that I assumed the search had ended or was cancelled.

The University of Texas at San Antonio Department of Anthropology seeks to hire a cultural medical anthropologist at the rank of Assistant Professor (tenure track) to start August 2019. We are interested in a scholar whose research is at the intersections of environment and health. Such research should demonstrate commitment to ethnographic methodologies, theoretical innovation, and openness to interdisciplinary collaboration. Relevant specializations within medical anthropology could include, but are not limited to, environmental justice, the political ecology and political economy of health, and the anthropologies of energy, development, and sustainability. The Department has a Ph.D. program emphasizing anthropology’s engagement with environmental issues, and the University has a growing commitment to public health. We are looking for candidates who will enhance this focus and who also will support the four-field emphases of our B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. programs.

The Department of Anthropology and the Centre for Diaspora and Transnational Studies in the Faculty of Arts and Science at the University of Toronto invite applications for a tenure-stream position at the rank of Assistant Professor in the area of African Diaspora studies. This will be a joint appointment between the Department of Anthropology (51%) and the Centre for Diaspora and Transnational Studies (49%). The University of Virginia American Studies Program, the Dept. of Anthropology, and the Dept. of Religious Studies invite applications for a joint tenure-track position in Native North American Studies at the rank of assistant or associate professor. The position will be a joint appointment in American Studies and in either Anthropology or Religious Studies, and responsibilities will include service and teaching half-time in both units. We seek scholars who are actively engaged with one or more Native North American communities, and whose scholarship is centered around Native perspectives, past and/or present. The candidate must be able to make connections with disciplinary conversations taking place in either Anthropology or Religious Studies, as well as to the interdisciplinary framework of American Studies. The successful candidate will have broad knowledge of their Ph.D. field, deep expertise about a particular culture, region, or community, and an ongoing program of research and publication.

Each year the program selects six scholars from around the world to be in residence at Princeton for an academic year and to engage in research and discussion around a common theme. Candidates will be considered in three categories: (1) Four of the fellowships will be awarded to early-career scholars employed in the equivalent of tenure-track positions who are expected to return to their position. (2) One fellowship is set aside for a postdoctoral research associate who at the time of application does not have a tenure-track faculty appointment. (3) In addition, one fellowship will be awarded to a senior scholar. All candidates must be based outside the United States.
  • During the academic year 2019-20, the Fung Global Fellows Program theme will be “Thinking Globally.” How people have thought about the planet has informed the institutions, norms, and policies that have pulled it together and torn it apart. For centuries, ideas of free trade, human rights or global governance have framed cooperation and competition, order and disorder. Such ideas have also spawned border-crossing movements, from campaigns to end slavery to commitments to reduce carbon emissions. In turn, global thinking and action have often reinforced commitments to national ideas and efforts to curb global exchange. The goal of this research theme is to explore how ideas framed the understanding of interests and the making of institutions that have yielded commonness and conflict across and within borders. We also want to understand how these ideas and practices came into being through scientific networks, foundations, and think tanks. The Program will also examine rival world ideas that have challenged prevailing orthodoxies. Nowadays, with cooperative norms under challenge, global institutions under stress, and a century of guiding ideas about global convergence in doubt, we want to take a broad look at where these ideas came from, their effects, and the prospects for intellectual renewal or rethinking. The goal of the 2019-20 Fung Global Fellows cohort will be to explore the ways people learned to rely on or to reject strangers far away, as well as to imagine how global relationships came to be and could be different. We welcome applicants from all disciplinary and inter-disciplinary fields from the sciences to the humanities whose work addresses this set of themes in any historical period or world region.
  • All candidates must reside outside the United States. To be eligible, postdoctoral applicants must have completed all requirements for their Ph.D. before August 1, 2019 but cannot have received their degrees more than three years prior to the start of the appointment on September 1, 2019. Early-career fellows must have received their Ph.D. or equivalent no earlier than September 1, 2009. Senior scholars, who have received their doctorates before 2009, must have faculty appointments and a record of scholarly accomplishment in the designated theme of the program. Fellowships will be awarded on the strength of a candidate’s proposed research project, the relationship of the project to the program theme, the candidate’s scholarly record, and the ability to contribute to the intellectual life of the program.

We seek a dynamic teacher with the versatility to cover sections of Intro to Cultural Anthropology, History and Theory of Anthropology, Ethnographic Methods, Anthropology of Religion, and upper-division electives in cultural anthropology related to the candidate’s areas of interest and specialization. Teaching load is 24 credits per year, typically divided into 4 three-credit courses per semester.

The International Honors Program (IHP), a program of World Learning/SIT, offers international, comparative study abroad programs. Each four-month program will take approximately 30 students from top-tier U.S. colleges and universities to four countries to do inter-disciplinary study from a comparative perspective.

IHP Food Systems examines how the dynamics of food production, distribution, consumption, and provisioning are affected by population growth, capitalism, rapid urbanization, climate change, and globalization, and which responses offer the most promise for sustainable food futures at local, national, and global levels.


Students will analyze local, national, and global food systems—and the very direct impact of food on our daily lives—to develop a deeper understanding of one of the most significant challenges of our time. By examining the implications of technological advances, changing geo-political landscapes, international trade regimes, and climate change on food security, students work to identify strategies to support healthy communities, prosperous livelihoods and sustainable environments in a rapidly changing world. Field studies will include meetings with subsistence farmers, small-scale producers and multinational corporations, rural and urban communities, trade organizations and community-based NGOs, multi-lateral organizations, international agencies, leaders of social movements and human rights advocacy groups.
