Gustavus Adolphus College - Cultural Anthropology (Nov. 4)[]

Gustavus Adolphus College invites applications for a tenure-track position of Assistant Professor of Cultural Anthropology in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology to begin September 1, 2014.

We seek candidates who have an earned doctorate in Cultural Anthropology with an area specialization in Africa or Asia/SE Asia and any topical or sub-disciplinary focus outside of Anthropology of Religion and Psychological Anthropology, which are already covered in the department. We will also consider candidates who have achieved ABD status with a solid indication of completion of the Ph.D. by August 1, 2014.

The successful candidate will have demonstrated excellence in teaching at undergraduate levels, evidence of an emerging scholarly agenda, and commitment to participating in the academic life of a liberal arts college. Previous experience teaching diverse populations is highly desirable.

Teaching responsibilities in the academic year include four sections of introductory cultural anthropology and two upper-level seminars in the specialty areas of the candidate who is hired. A commitment to undergraduate teaching and advising is essential as well as flexibility and willingness to contribute enthusiastically and cooperatively to a thriving program.

  • To apply, please email copies (as PDF files) of a letter of application outlining teaching and research interests and background (including specializations), curriculum vitae, transcripts (scanned acceptable), evidence of excellence in teaching, and a sample of scholarship (e.g., a publication, conference presentation, or dissertation excerpt) to anthro-hire@gustavus.edu. Three letters of recommendation should be emailed directly by the references. The cover letter and letters of recommendation should be addressed to: Dr. Patric Giesler, Chair, Department of Sociology and Anthropology, Gustavus Adolphus College
  • Application information is also available at: http://www.gustavus.edu/jobs. Questions may be addressed to Dr. Patric Giesler at anthro-hire@gustavus.edu. Review of applications will begin on November 4, 2013, and continue until the position is filled.
  • Any news about this position? (12/6)
  • I heard from a university-level insider that they have a strong inside candidate.  No word on my app though.  (12/17)
  • Invitation for a skype interview. They are running behind but plan to complete initial interviews before winter break. (12/16) x2
  • Two general emails from search chair regarding the timeline of the search. Both mention going to the dean now for a review of the committee's candidate summary and recommendations. Am I crazy, or does this mean the skype interviews are counting as the final interviews? Does anyone know if they plan to do campus invites, or are they skipping these (especially if the above poster is right about an internal candidate)?
  • Good questions, and I, too, would be interested to know whether 'taking it to the dean' likely means that an offer will be made without campus visits. That would make a lot of sense, financially, so I suspect you've hit the nail on the head.
  • Best case scenario I can hope for--campus invites to other candidates if the VAP declines the offer. No inside-candidate-hating intended. From what I gather, they aren't always a shoe-in.
  • I learned that all candidates skype-interviewed were/are outside-candidates, only outside-candidates, no inside candidate, so that is not an issue. Moreover, I was told that the search process for this position requires on-site visits, as is standard practice in their tenure-track search processes. Conference with the dean was simply part of the post-skype interview process leading to the on-site visit selection. That's all.
  • It's been a month + since my Skype interview.  Anyone had any communication at all?
  • They have chosen their campus visit finalists. Campus visits in February.
  • Got a formal rejection email saying that they had made a successful hiring offer. (3/6)

  • Closing Date: 11/01/13.
  • Does anyone know why this job disappeared from AAA so soon after being posted? The listing is still active on the HR site for PLU, so I assume it's still valid, but I was confused that it wasn't still on the AAA jobs listing just a few weeks after it was initially posted. (7/9)

  • Hmm, no one contacted for an interview since the 11/1 closing date? (11/12) X3

  • Any news at all?
  • Still no news? If the position is open until filled, will they tell those of us who have already applied that they're not interested?
  • They received over 170 applications, so that might explain the lengthy review.
  • Good to know, but that figure doesn't sound any higher than average

  • Anything more than hearsay? (1/24)
  • Rejection Email (02/05) x3

  • Rejection e-mail does not say that they have made a hire, just that "your file is not among those still under active consideration"
  • Strange, too. I've never heard a thing about my application either way.
  • Has anyone heard if this search has been completed? (3/19)
  • I emailed last week and got a timely, if brief, response: "The Interdisciplinary Committee has not yet made a decision." (3/25)

  • Application acknowledged (11/5) x10
  • request for diversity statement with acknowledgement
  • There are 2 VAPs in the Union anthro department who is a very good fit for the position. It didn't stop me from applying, but .... anyone know any more?
  • Seriously, no interviews yet? How many on the wiki applied for this one? (x13)
  • I bet they received a *lot* of applications from many people who are very differently qualified. It's going to take them a while to wade through and decide what they actually want. They specified a bunch of different topical areas and several geographic regions...makes the job harder for the search committee
  • Sure... but they have 9 slots on the AAA cattle pen calendar for less than a week away ....
  • 11/16: i wonder how you calculate 9 slots - from the schedule it looks like Union is down for 3 x 3 hr slots, shouldn't that allow for a larger number of interviews?
  • You are correct. I did not realize they were 1 hour slots. Probably more like 18 slots.
  • AAA interview scheduled (11/15) (x9)
  • Congratulations! but since my heart is literally breaking right now, is there any chance you just got them and you were one of the 10 earlier today that had not heard yet, leaving me the teensiest bit of hope that my email is soon to come? (x2!)
  • Sorry to be x8, stranger-friend. If it makes you feel better: eventually, they'll whittle the 9 down to 1! :(Virtual hug to you and best of luck!
  • I am the sad person above - haven't heard anything. Thanks for being so forthcoming and nice, y'all! (11/16)
  • 11/16: as one of the folks selected for an aaa interview, i just did some more research on the department, and it's quite interesting that there are 2 married couples there, and quite senior, in what is a quite small department already. anyone knows sth about dept dynamics, politics etc?
  • 11/25: Didn't interview at AAA but might by phone. What kind of questions did they stress: research or teaching or both?
  • 11/26: I find such public fishing for inside information unfair to those who already interviewed, and, thus, borderline-unethical (disclosure: I interviewed at the AAA's).
  • 11/26: Seriously! And also, I am not applying for this job but why on earth would anyone who did interview offer information that would give an edge to random anonymous competition?
  • 11/26: It's not unethical. First, it lets people know whether the position is more focused on research, teaching, or both. In that sense, it's consistent with everything this board is about: sharing information about the job positions. Second, it's only "unethical" if you offer an answer that gives a competitive advantage. Any candidate expects to talk about their research/teaching (duh!). The question is about what the "questions stressed." The person wasn't asking what the questions were or how anyone responded. Calm down people!
  • 11/30: I questioned the ethical status of this post (on 11/26). After several years of following this board, I've never seen inquiries about the content of interviews. I thought that was a line that shouldn't be crossed. If the original commenter wasn't fishing for answers that would give her/him a competitive advantage, what was the point of the question? So, personally, I find the comment below ("the interview focused on teaching, mainly...") unethical. That's my position. But I acknowledge that there are no accepted, normative standards in this exercise of "cut-throat altruism."
  • Worth repeating: "...it's only "unethical" if you offer an answer that gives a competitive advantage. Any candidate expects to talk about their research/teaching (duh!). The question is about what the "questions stressed." The person wasn't asking what the questions were or how anyone responded."
  • the interview focused on teaching, mainly. they're trying to find a good fit, get a sense of what you want to teach/work on. they're a small department and clearly want everyone to be happy. laid-back folks - or just exhausted from marathon interviewing in a windowless downstairs room for hours and hours. 11/28
  • Honestly, be happy and nice to each other, people! This was my dream job and I didn't get a phone or AAA interview even though I believe that I have a lot to offer to the department as my expertise covers almost everything they wanted in the ad and have significant SLAC teaching experience. (11/28)
  • 12/13: over 200 applicants for position. committee will be meeting over winter break and deciding on campus interviews by mid-January.
  • Campus visits anyone? (1/17)
  • Request for more materials (dissertation and letters), campus visit invites to go out in early Feb (1/17) (x 2)
  • Any updates yet? (2/13)
  • Invite for campus visit (dates are still being worked out) (2/13)

Cornell UniversityMellon Postdoc in Anthropology--Sovereignty and Representation in the Islamic World (Dec. 15)[]

With the sponsorship of the Cornell University Society for the Humanities, the Department of Anthropology invites applications for a two-year Mellon Postdoctoral Fellowship for academic years 2014/15 and 2015/16. Applicants’ work should focus on issues of sovereignty and representation as they intersect in the Islamic world from the 8th century to the present. New media have played a critical role in contemporary social movements, from digital forms such as twitter to analog forms such as cassette tapes. We thus seek a cutting-edge scholar working within any anthropological tradition--ethnographic, archaeological, historical--to explore the interdigitation of the aesthetic and the political. The Fellow will teach two courses each year: one lower and one upper division. Depending on expertise, the lower-level course would be the introductory course in sociocultural or archaeological anthropology, our Cultural Diversity and Contemporary Issues course, or a first-year writing seminar on a mutually agreed topic. The upper-level course would be a seminar aimed at seniors and graduate students on a topic related to the themes outlined above.

Eligibility Requirements: Applicants for the Mellon Postdoctoral Fellowship for the 2014/15-2015/16 academic years must have received the Ph.D. degree after September 2008. Mellon Fellowships are open to international applicants. Applicants who will have received the Ph.D. degree by June 30, 2014 are eligible. Applicants who do not have the Ph.D. in hand at the time of application must include a letter from the committee chair or department stating that the Ph.D. degree will be conferred before the term of the fellowship begins.

Application Procedures: Applicants should submit the following materials for consideration: a curriculum vitae; a detailed statement of research interests; a writing sample; course proposals for the courses the Mellon Fellow will teach while in residence at Cornell; three letters of recommendation

  • Applications are due by December 15, 2013 to the address below; we encourage applicants to contact the Anthropology department if they will be attending the AAA meetings (nr29@cornell.edu). Applications should be sent to: Paula L. Epps-Cepero, Program Administrator, Society for the Humanities, Cornell University, 27 East Avenue, Ithaca, NY 14853.

A Running List of Schools Violating AAA Career Center Request[]

The AAA has requested that search committees refrain from asking for letters of recommendation until initial screening of applicants has been completed:

"Solicitation of letters of recommendation should occur only after an initial screening of candidates to minimize inconvenience to applicants and referees. Names of references may be requested, however."

http://www.aaanet.org/profdev/index.cfm

Despite this (at least two year-old request), many institutions persist in requiring letters of recommendation as part of an initial application package.  This places a burden on both the applicant and his/her reviewers and places undue stress on advisor/advisee relationships.  Please list here the names of schools asking for up-front letters of recommendation so that we may alert the AAA to violations of their request.
