American University of Beirut (LEB) - Faculty Position in World/Comparative Literature (incl. Post-Colonial)

The Department of English at the American University of Beirut invites applications for a full-time faculty position in World/Comparative Literature, with a possible sub-specialty in Post-Colonial Studies, to begin August 15, 2019. The position is tenure-track and open to all ranks (assistant, associate, and full professor).

The field and period of specialization are open, but the primary concentration should be outside Arabic literatures. The successful candidate will be expected to offer undergraduate and graduate courses in their area(s) of expertise, and to contribute to curriculum development in the department’s Literature programs, which include minors in Translation Studies and Women and Gender Studies.

Applicants should have a PhD in literature upon appointment. Appointments at the assistant professor rank are for an initial period of four years with opportunities for renewal and advancement.

The Department of English invites applications for a full-time tenure-track appointment in global modernist literature at the rank of assistant professor beginning in July 2019. Oberlin College (OH) - TT Asst. Professor - Comparative Literature and Jewish Studies

The Program in Comparative Literature (CMPL) and the Program in Jewish Studies (JWST) in the College of Arts and Sciences invite applications for a full-time, tenure-track, faculty position in the intersecting curricular areas of Comparative Literature (.5 FTE) and Jewish Studies (.5 FTE). Initial appointment to this position will be for a term of four years beginning fall semester 2019, and will carry the rank of Assistant Professor.

The incumbent will teach the standard teaching load of 4.5 courses per year in the area of Jewish literatures. In addition to literature in Hebrew and Yiddish, this includes literary sub-traditions in Arabic, English, French, German, Russian, Chinese, Japanese, and other languages. It is expected that most or all of the incumbent’s literature courses will be cross-listed between JWST and CMPL. This is an equal joint appointment in CMPL and JWST so the incumbent will teach core courses for these interdisciplinary programs as well as intermediate and advanced topics in their subfields. Once every two to three semesters, the incumbent will teach Introduction to Jewish Studies and Introduction to Comparative Literature, which has units in Literary Theory, World Literature, Translation, and Literature and the Other Arts.

The incumbent will also engage in sustained scholarly research and/or other creative work appropriate to the position and participate in the full range of faculty responsibilities, including academic advising and service on committees.

The successful incumbent will have a Ph.D. in Comparative Literature, in hand or expected by the first semester of academic year 2019, with a research specialty in Jewish literatures. Preference will be given for candidates whose languages include those taught at Oberlin College. Candidates must demonstrate interest and potential excellence in undergraduate teaching.

Queen Mary University of London - Tenure track position - Comparative Literature

The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at QMUL has recently advertised 20 new posts that are designed to recruit talented researchers to QMUL. Tulane University (LA) - TT Asst. Professor - Comparative / Transnational American Modernisms (Poetry)

The Department of English at Tulane University seeks to hire an assistant professor (tenure-track) specializing in comparative/transnational American modernisms with a starting date of July 1, 2019.   Candidates working on 20th-century modernist poetry and poetics of the Americas including the Caribbean, with an emphasis on hemispheric, transnational, latinx, queer, and/ or sound studies are especially welcome. 

Faculty in the English Department work closely with Tulane’s Africana Studies Program, the New Orleans Center for the Gulf South, and the Stone Center for Latin American Studies. We are especially interested in candidates who understand comparative/transnational American modernisms from international, interdisciplinary, and intersectional perspectives. We are seeking a senior lecturer in English with a specialisation in comparative literature for a permanent position at the School of Humanities, Education and Social Sciences (HumES). The school offers undergraduate and postgraduate education within a broad spectrum of subjects and fields, in the form of short courses as well as degree programmes. HumES is also host to research and a number of doctoral programmes. Transdisciplinary collaboration is characteristic of the school, as is the ambition to continuously develop the courses and programmes on offer and the research pursued. 

Subject area

The position is in English.

Background

The English department has a particular focus on teacher education and English is one of the subjects offered as part of the subject teacher education programme with a specialisation in teaching upper secondary school. The subject also has a central role in the teacher education programmes for primary school teachers. The subject is part of a multidisciplinary environment encompassing Swedish language, rhetoric, comparative literature and history. Together we form the Humanities Division. In cooperation with the Swedish Language and Rhetoric departments, English is a main contributor to the new Bachelor’s programme Language, Rhetoric and Communicative Leadership. Research in the subject is pursued within the division’s two research environments – Language and Rhetoric in Society, and Narration, Life and Meaning – as well as within university-wide didactic research networks. Within the didactic research, there is a particular focus on practice-based research.

As a subject, English is offered at the undergraduate, Master’s and doctoral levels. At the doctoral level, English is one of the specialisation within Studies in the Humanities – an umbrella subject for doctoral studies at the Humanities Division. 

Duties and responsibilities

A senior lecturer is expected to spend their working hours on education at all levels, research, and any associated collaboration activities. In addition to teaching, research, and collaboration, duties and responsibilities also include development efforts, administration, and continuing professional development. Teaching duties include supervision, examination, course development, planning and evaluation.

As a senior lecturer in English with a specialisation in literature, you are expected to teach courses on literary studies and, to some extent, cultural studies, but you are also expected to teach on various communication and language proficiency courses. Since teaching is primarily geared towards the teacher education programmes, with a particular emphasis on the primary education programmes, you are also expected to teach literary didactics within the framework of teaching English as a school subject.

Qualifications

Those qualified for appointment as a senior lecturer are applicants who have demonstrated teaching expertise and have been awarded a doctoral degree in the subject area or have the corresponding research competence or some other professional expertise that is of value in view of the subject matter of the post and the duties that it will involve.

A general eligibility criteria for teaching staff at Örebro University is that the candidate has completed courses on teaching and learning in higher education corresponding to 10 weeks. Knowledge and skills equivalent to such courses may also be assessed and considered to provide eligibility.

Assessment criteria

When appointing teaching staff, their research expertise as well as their teaching expertise shall be assessed with an equal amount of care and attention. In the assessment, experience and qualifications in terms of collaboration with the wider community, of which the University is a part, will be evaluated, as will national and international experience and mobility.

A particular asset for the position is experience of teaching and course development within primary education teaching programmes, especially within literary didactics. Research expertise

Research expertise shall be demonstrated through independent research contributions and continued scientific publishing following the award of the candidate’s doctoral degree. Importance shall also be attached to candidates’ establishment in the research community as well as to candidates’ experience of planning, administrating and leading their own research.

Teaching expertise

Teaching expertise shall be demonstrated through varying degrees of contributions within teaching, such as planning, execution, evaluation and supervision. Applicants shall be able to account for their teaching outlook and approach and have the ability to reflect on their own pedagogical development as well as on the teacher’s role. The applicant shall also have contributed to the development of educational activities.

In assessing the applicants’ teaching expertise, attention will be paid to their experience in terms of planning, executing and evaluating teaching, and of supervision and examination. Importance shall also be attached to the candidate’s demonstrated interest in course development and educational development work.

Information

University of Texas at Austin (TX) - Postdoctoral Fellow - Quantitative Criticism Lab

The postdoctoral fellow will work with the Quantitative Criticism Lab (QCL, http://www.qcrit.org) on a project funded by the American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS) to develop computational tools for the cross-cultural analysis of literature.

Essential Functions: Work with the Quantitative Criticism Lab, a research group developing cross-disciplinary approaches to the study of literature and culture, to produce a web-based suite of tools for traditionally-trained humanists to analyze literary texts in a quantitative manner. The tools are expected both to enhance traditional modes of literary criticism and to enable novel quantitative analyses of the cultural evolution of literature. Work primarily involves software development and machine learning. Design research, analyze data, and produce writing for diverse scholarly venues. Under the supervision of Pramit Chaudhuri (UT Austin) and Joseph Dexter (Dartmouth College), the co-directors of QCL, collaborate with a diverse array of scholars, in both academia and industry, affiliated with QCL. Play a major role in mentoring the numerous graduate, undergraduate, and high school students who conduct research with QCL. Participate in organization of workshops and conferences; work towards the data management and sustainability goals for the project.

Required qualifications: A Ph.D. in a computational, statistical, linguistic, or literary field is required. Possible disciplines include (but are not limited to) anthropology, applied mathematics, bioinformatics, classics, comparative literature, computer science, English, evolutionary biology, linguistics, and statistics. Expertise in computer programming and statistical analysis is essential, as is a deep interest in the study of literature. By the start date of the position, applicants should either have the Ph.D. in hand or be able to provide certification from their home institution that all degree requirements have been successfully completed. They must have received the Ph.D. within the last three years.

Preferred Qualifications: Prior experience with any of the following areas: computational linguistics, cultural evolution, digital humanities, literary criticism of a premodern or non-Anglophone tradition, machine learning, and natural language processing. Residence in Austin, the site of QCL's physical lab space, during the fellowship period.
