Antioch College is seeking applications for a tenure-track appointment in Postcolonial and/or World Literature for Fall of 2013. The successful candidate will have a Ph.D. in English, Comparative Literature, Cultural Studies, or related discipline in hand or expected by May 2013 and be prepared to teach Introduction to Advanced Study in Literature and course(s) in critical theory. The successful candidate will be able to provide proof of dynamic, innovative teaching at the undergraduate level, including upper-division and core, Foundations-level courses within the major. The College is seeking a colleague who has demonstrated excellence in teaching and has strong commitment to undergraduate liberal arts education. Rank and tenure status are open depending on qualifications, and salary is competitive and commensurate with experience.
The successful applicant is expected to contribute to the interdisciplinarity of the Humanities, primarily through connections between literature and philosophy, as well as one of the team-taught, interdisciplinary, thematic Global Seminars. These theme-based courses are focused on water, food, energy, health, education, and governance. In addition to teaching responsibilities, applicants will also be expected to be involved with academic advising, including overseeing Senior Projects/Theses in the major. The position will also require institutional service, including committee work and program assessment. There is an expectation of ongoing scholarly and professional activities.

The Department of English & Modern Languages offers B.A. and B.S.E. degrees in English with minors in Creative Writing, English Literature, African American Studies, and Women's Studies. Teaching duties include composition courses and world literature courses, with a preference for courses in Asian (especially Chinese) literature. The department also offers B.A. and B.S.E. degrees in Spanish.
Responsibilities: Teaching assignments will include composition and world literature courses, with the ability to teach courses in Asian (especially Chinese) literature preferred. Teaching load is 4/4, with no more than 3 preparations per semester. Composition load is dependent on staffing, continuing scholarly growth and service are required for tenure and promotion.
Qualifications: Minimum requirements: Ph.D. in English from a regionally accredited (or foreign equivalent) university and evidence of effective college-level teaching experience in the desired subject areas. The Comparative Literature Program at Oberlin College invites applications for a full-time tenure track faculty position in the College of Arts and Sciences. Initial appointment to this position will be for a term of four years, beginning fall semester of 2013, and will carry the rank of Assistant Professor.
The incumbent will teach the standard load (currently 4.5 courses/year) at all levels of the undergraduate curriculum in the general area of Comparative Literature, including the required entry course to the major, Introduction to Comparative Literature, and other courses with emphasis on the connections of literature with the other arts. Does anyone know how to interpret the 'Acknowledgment received' email? Is it a nice way of phrasing a rejection, or an indication that they haven't made a decision about your application, or haven't read it yet?
Generally acknowledgment emails have 3 purposes. 1. they notify applicants that the department is processing applications and 2. they give a timeline for the decision making process. 3. They also remind applicants to fill out EEOC forms.
Unfortunately, you can't garner much more information from these acknowledgement messages. For the most part, applicants who are invited to interview are contacted the same day. However, there are instances when applicants are contacted at separate times.
Universities won't send out definitive rejection notices until after the search has concluded, which means sometime in the Spring. It might be helpful to look at the wiki from last year to get a sense of how the process unfolds.
As someone who has been through the process and knows a lot of people that have/are, it is somewhat unusual to have the requests for additional documents and information (somewhat misleading) about the search get sent out on the same day. More and more places are kindly rejecting people when they know they are not on a short list (see this wiki or other job ones for examples -- the above poster perhaps has not been on the job market in the last couple of years). I have never received a "this is our timeline" email the same day someone else received a "may we have more information" email. So, yes, the "acknowledgement received" email was in effect a rejection -- but so passive and unclear that it is only through wiki knowledge one realizes this. It is this sort of thing that can make a rough job search process even more demoralizing. Although rejection is never enjoyable, the sooner one knows, the better.
No, actually, those who received a request for additional materials / invitation for an MLA interview also first received that same "Acknowledgment received" email earlier that day. Not that any of it matters at this point. Emails to acknowledge receipt of your application do just that, even if they arrive after decisions have been made. Official rejections may or may not ever follow.
But the people who just received the acknowledgement and not request for additional materials could have instead received rejections. Not that it matters, but a lot of places are trying to be more considerate of candidates and upfront about the process (perhaps partially because of the job wiki? which only exists because of the lack of transparency). In a brutal market, a little kindness goes a long way.
You're absolutely right. I received a rejection recently that clearly said that they (can't remember which university) were no longer considering my application, but that they would reevalutate it if for some reason they had to go back to the original pool. Such an email lets us know that they've made decisions, while at the same time, keeping their options open, should they have to return to the orginal batch of applications. Very useful, respectful, and honest for everyone involved. Though it is also our task not to get swept away by the inevitable uncertainty that comes with being on the academic job market (no matter how transparent the communication), as difficult as that may be.

Applicants in literary and cultural studies or linguistics will be considered to contribute to existing departmental needs and to a new curriculum focused on global cultural processes.
The DWLLC at Iowa groups departments with a focus on the literary, linguistic, and cultural studies in world languages. The person hired for this position will be appointed to one of the departments within the DWLLC and must have native or near-native fluency in English and one or more languages appropriate to the appointing department along with the ability and willingness to teach at all levels in that language or languages (including Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Hindi, Italian, Korean, Portuguese, Russian, or Spanish) . Ability and interest in interdisciplinary team-teaching are required, along with a Ph.D. defended by August 21, 2013 and evidence of a strong research agenda.
Desirable areas of research include migration in relationship to diasporic studies, translation, media and culture, language contact, ethnicity, or gender.
The DWLLC is initiating new curricula related to global cultural and linguistic exchange and flows. The person hired for this position will be asked to participate with new and established faculty in the design and delivery of such curricula, including the development of an introductory-level interdisciplinary course in English on world cultures.

They will have specific expertise – engaging a global perspective yet anchored within a particular historical context – in one or preferably more of the following areas: comparative intellectual histories of Western and non-Western cultures from the eighteenth century onward; critical musicology and sound studies; social/cultural politics of networks and/or networked media; theories and histories of the moving image; and comparative and world literatures, preferably with emphasis on non-Western cultures and traditions. Ideal candidates will be trained in intellectual history, music, media studies, moving image studies, or literature primarily, and will have done solid research in one of the other areas, combining them in novel ways. Fluency in one or more modern European languages and/or one or more modern non-European languages is required.
Appointment will be 100%-time over the nine-month academic year. Appointment will be at the rank of tenure-track assistant professor.
Candidates will be evaluated according to a) overall quality of their academic preparation, b) relevance of their research to the department's academic priorities and fields of inquiry, c) evidence of commitment to teaching and skills as a teacher, as well as d) strength of recommendations.

Question: Has anyone asked them what the "electronic dossier" should include (besides the letters of recommendation)?
Q.2: How does one write an application letter of "about 500 words" only? You need at least 2 pages to give them a real sense of who you are. I've never come across such a low word limit for job applications (even the ones submitted through online modules) Makes me wonder if they already have an internal candidate.

I regret this impersonal mailing, especially since it carries the
disappointing news that we will not be asking you for an interview at
MLA. We had a very large number of applicants, and had to choose
among many qualified and interesting candidates. We finally arriving
at a shortlist of something less than 7 % of the total. We then ranked
this reduced list, cutting it at the number we felt we could reasonably
interview.
After reviewing so much work being done in Comparative Literature, I
can affirm that the field appears vibrant and varied, disciplined and
innovative. For the sake of literature and its continual renewal in
our society, we wish you the very best in your scholarship and
