Minimum Qualifications: Master's degree in English OR Master's degree with 18 graduate hours in English. Working knowledge of Microsoft Office programs, as well as intermediate computer skills. Must be familiar with interactive teaching methods and instruction via the Internet.

Preferred Qualifications: Coursework in teaching Composition and/or Rhetoric; Prior teaching experience at the college or university level; Working knowledge of Blackboard course management system; Experience in teaching distance learning courses using Blackboard; Dual Credit or High School teaching experience.

Work Hours: May include day and evening teaching assignments, as well as, dual credit courses offered at local high school campuses and/or Texas Department of Corrections units.

The English DEPARTMENT at the Borough of Manhattan Community College (BMCC) invites applications for an Assistant, Associate or Full Professor position starting Fall 2018.

The Borough of Manhattan Community College (BMCC) is an integral part of City University of New York system with the largest college enrollment in the system of over 27,000 students. It is strategically located in downtown Manhattan in close proximity to the artistic communities of Tribeca and SoHo, the dynamic downtown financial district, and the center of New York City government at City Hall. Our students come from the New York City area, and all over the world. An international college, BMCC has students from over 155 countries, who speak a variety of languages.

The English Department is undergoing a process of growth and renewal and would like to attract new faculty that will share and contribute to this process through teaching, research and guidance in their area(s) of expertise. They will share responsibility for committee and department assignments including administrative, supervisory, and other functions for the good of the institution.

English Department faculty teach developmental writing, composition, rhetoric and literature. Research and peer- reviewed publication are expected for tenure and promotion. Other areas of responsibility include curriculum development, participation in departmental and college-wide activities and committees, such as, grant writing, assessment, faculty development, mentoring student projects, and academic advisement. The qualified candidate must be able to work in either the Day or Evening/Weekend program, as needed by the Department.

QUALIFICATIONS

Ph.D. degree in area(s) of experience or equivalent. Also required are the ability to teach successfully, demonstrated scholarship or achievement, and ability to cooperate with others for the good of the institution.

For Associate Professor and Professor, the candidate must have a record of significant achievement in the field. College teaching experience required. Experience in a multicultural urban educational environment preferred. Experience in using teaching and learning technologies preferred. Experience in teaching Children’s Literature strongly desired. Background in scholarship of teaching desired. Experience teaching non-traditional urban college students preferred.

Teaching assignments may include various delivery modes, such as face-to-face, on-line, hybrid and/or blended formats during days, evenings and weekends.

Masters degree in English, with a concentration or significant coursework in composition and rhetoric or the teaching of developmental/basic writing required. Doctoral degree in English, with a concentration or significant coursework in composition and rhetoric or the teaching of developmental/basic writing preferred. Teaching experience at the college level required. Teaching experience at the 2-year/community college level preferred. Teaching experience with diverse populations preferred. Experience with co-requisite or accelerated models of developmental education preferred. Additional certification or training in the teaching of developmental reading or literacy preferred. Position Responsibilities: This position is a full time faculty appointment that performs instruction-related duties and responsibilities and program coordination and direction in the English Department at the College.

Teaching: Teach courses in the English department. 8-month, Annually Appointed: As an 8-month, annually appointed faculty member, you will be primarily responsible for teaching in discipline, planning, organizing and providing feedback to promote and direct student learning. This position is appointed each year and contracted to teach six courses, maintain 12 office hours and, in addition, works with the dean to identify and then contribute five hours of service in areas that support student learning and engagement.

10-month, Tenure-Track Appointed: 10-month, tenure-track professors are, in addition to teaching in discipline, responsible for curriculum development, selection of discipline resources, assists in the development and evaluation of faculty and participates in college governance activities. As a 10-month, tenure track faculty member, you will be on a continuing contract to teach 5 courses, maintain 10 office hours, and 10 college service hours that may include, but not limited to serving on committees and work teams, research and special projects.

Valencia's tenure-track professors must successfully complete a five-year tenure earning process for continued employment.

Essential Job Functions: 1. Prepares and delivers instruction to students in assigned modalities (including classroom, hybrid, online, etc.). Prepares instructional materials. Provides feedback on students' progress, including evaluation of student mastery of course and program outcomes. 2. Provides ample periods of time for engaging students in matters related to academic success through posted student engagement hours and in other activities that support student learning. 3. Prepares and submits required documentation including course syllabi, student attendance, final course grades, and other information as requested or required by the college. 4. Working Conditions This job operates in a classroom setting and professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard classroom and office equipment such as microphones, audio/videorecorders, computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear.
