Position: The Department of Communication at Cornell University invites applications for a 9-month, full time tenure-track faculty position in communication at the Assistant Professor level. The successful applicant will conduct research and teach courses in areas that complement the department'€™s leadership in the social scientific study of communication. We welcome applicants whose research supports and extends our existing strengths, which include: culture and identity; groups, organizations, and networks; media studies; policy and public engagement; science, health, risk, environment; social inequality; and/or technology and social media. The department is taking active steps to build diversity, equity, and inclusion into all facets of our work, and the colleague we hire will help us advance these efforts in our research, teaching, and engagement. Our department values multiple methods of qualitative and quantitative inquiry and embraces interdisciplinary collaboration. The position involves 50% research and 50% teaching responsibilities. Communication faculty teach five undergraduate and/or graduate courses over two academic years and advise students in the Department'€™s B.S. and Ph.D. programs.

Qualifications: The successful candidate will have a Ph.D. in Communication or a closely aligned field and show promise of developing a national and international reputation doing theory-based and empirical research. We seek innovative scholars of social science who will develop a research program connected to College and University priorities in addressing how people communicate, interact, learn, lead, and shape enterprises of all scales to improve the well-being of individuals, communities, and economies around the world.

Starting Date and Applications: Anticipated starting date for this position is July 2022 or as negotiated. Rutgers University (New Brunswick, NJ)

The Department of Journalism and Media Studies in the School of Communication & Information invites applications for a tenure-track position (open rank) to begin in the fall of 2022.

For this position, we seek candidates whose scholarship adopts a critical perspective on the role of digital platforms and algorithms in global media and global society.

We are especially interested in candidates whose work addresses platforms and media systems in East Asian contexts and/or as they pertain to issues of race/ethnicity, disability, LGBTQIA+, class, or other historically underrepresented categories, regions, or groups.

We welcome applications from scholars using a range of methodological approaches (e.g., qualitative, quantitative, critical, interpretive, mixed-methods) who study topics including but not limited to the following areas:

  • Algorithmic discrimination
  • Data justice
  • Environmental implications of digital technologies
  • Platform economies
  • Platform governance/regulatory frameworks
  • Inequality and platforms
  • Digital infrastructures (technical and/or material)
  • Media industries and platforms
  • Platforms and publics (e.g., studies of mis/disinformation, civic engagement, platformized news and journalism)
  • The role of platforms in political communication

Responsibilities of tenure-track/tenured faculty members include undergraduate and graduate teaching assignments in journalism and media studies, an active program of research in the candidate’s area of scholarly expertise, and service contributions in accordance with the university policy for tenure‐track and tenured appointments.


MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE A Ph.D. or equivalent degree in Media Studies, Communication, Information Science, Sociology, Anthropology, Political Science or other relevant discipline is expected as of August 2022. Applicants should have a demonstrated record or strong likelihood of top‐tier peer‐reviewed publication and evidence of or preparation for effective teaching. Senior‐level applicants should provide evidence of leadership in research, instruction, and service. A record of external funding is a plus.
